Oh and these gulf shrimp dumplings were my jam!!!!
Jennell F.

The food was amazing and service was excellent. I will be back. I arrived early and the kitchen was preparing food and it smelled so good inside.

The 5-star average rating doesn't surprise me at all! I'm fortunate to have friends with good taste who recommended this place. It really is a special restaurant with some unique menu items. The setting is pretty cozy and casual and I'm pretty sure we were served by the owner herself. The photos of the food look as good as they tasted.

I would have never thought of fusing Cajun/Creole and Japanese food, but what they're cooking up at Kinoko is sooo right and fun! The blend between each cuisine's comfort foods and flavors is seamless and the flavor profiles and textures truly elevate the experience. There were plenty of creative plant-based options that surprised a carnivore like myself. The jackfruit sneauxcrab blew our minds- spot on texture and flavor. The star of the night had to be the jambalaya fried rice. Japanese omurice with the flavors of a Southern jambalaya... Do yourself a favor and try it. They slice the omelet at the table as well! We sat at the bar as a group of four on a Friday night and had plenty of space for the many dishes we ordered! The barstaff and servers were lively and friendly, and I'll definitely be back!

My hubby and I went for his bday dinner and wow! It was all our favs in one place. New Orleans flair and fusion into Japanese and sushi! Gotta love it! The Nola Roll was incredible. And don't sleep on the matcha lava cake. My hubby was in heaven! So many booming and unique flavors. The servers are fun and having a great time right along with you! I cannot wait to go back! The owner is just lovely and makes the spot a vibrant place to be!

Tucked away in Greenpoint, Kinoko mixes Japanese and Southern flavors in a way that hooked me right away. The dumplings with lobster and fried rice? Good stuff. But let me rave about the real star: the matcha cake and ice cream. It's seriously amazing! Sweetness and matcha goodness in perfect balance, making me crave more. If you're around Greenpoint and want something different, Kinoko is the place to be for flavors that'll make you want seconds.

10/10 Tried this on a whim after seeing it on pulsd and I'm so happy I did, this is the perfect combination of New Orleans flavor and the freshness of Japanese cuisine. The owner is a hostess with the mostest who offers that warm southern hospitality that's so hard to come by in NYC and makes you feel comfortable which just elevates the experience I tried the New Orleans roll and I'm still thinking about it, the fried rice is also amazing. A definite hidden gem And must try

Jackfruit sneauxcrab tamaki

I met the owner's mom while waiting for a very delayed flight last summer down to New Orleans after spending 2 days in 2 airports. She was a riot, and told me her daughter moved to NYC and was opening a NOLA inspired Asian fusion restaurant. My brain lit up, and I started following the Instagram page. It took me 10 months after that to get there, and it was BEYOND worth the wait I went with my friend who was actually supposed to go with me on that flight last summer, and it's walkable from his apt (which is now dangerous in the best way). We walked in and I recognized Kelseay from social media, and introduced myself as we'd talked a bit on IG prior. She immediately knew who I was, was so welcoming and we were seated at one of the window seats. The whole place is so warm, decorated in such lovely ways, and I Love how much purple there is. Given the name of the restaurant is mushroom in Japanese, it's ironic that I don't eat mushrooms (and I cannot handle spice). She was super informative about what vegan options I could have in general or with possibly omitting anything spicy and mushrooms. I got the jackfruit tamaki and the mango roll sans Sriracha. The tamaki was so good and unique that I got a second one, and the way they use jackfruit in place of crab is unlike anything I've experienced. It was happy hour, so the tamaki and 2 wines on the menu were half off. The wine was delicious, the tamaki I liked more than the sushi roll, and then kelseay asked if we were interested in dessert... She said there was a matcha cake, and I didn't need to hear anything else. It wasn't 100% for me ingredients wise, and I didn't care. This was one of the best most different desserts ive ever had-it's basically a matcha lava cake and comes with a matcha kit Kat bar and ice cream on the side. I was so in awe of what I'd just eaten I could honestly barely form sentences. The entire experience was incredible, unique, not like anything I've ever had, and I cannot WAIT to go back. We got there right after they opened, and it quickly filled up. I am so thankful for that plane trip last year I wasn't originally supposed to take, and for Kelseay and her mom Jer for being some of the most fun and kind people I've met in a while. Once you meet both you really can tell they're related, I'm so excited for them and to recommend so many people to go check out Kinoko

At $20 for a whole sandwich, it's definitely worth it, but you can also opt for a half. Pairing half a sandwich with a cup of their divine gumbo would leave me more than satisfied. The oysters, sourced from various shores along the East Coast, were fantastic, and the gumbo was equally impressive. They've recently added cocktails to the menu, and their Sazerac is outstanding. This is truly one of the best restaurants in Prospect Heights. They don't take reservations, and there will likely never be any open seating, but the experience is well worth the wait.

Original Hurricane was perfection, had to have another. Not a boozy taste but it does catch up with you. I was a little disappointed with the catfish because I was expecting that Nawlins flavor and it was just fried catfish, meh. The cup of gumbo and the spoonful of rice (not complaining about that, it was enough) is where all of the flavor is! The chicken, the andouille and the roux, brought back so many good memories of good food while in the French Quarter. They did that, I should have gotten a larger portion! Our waiter John was very nice and checked in on us regularly, didn't have to lock for him or try to get his attention. Again the place is small but he was very attentive. I would go back just to try other things and hopefully I will get more of that flavor.

They were taking some walk ins as well. I shared the japchae boudin balls which were decent but the real star was the roe sauce it came up. I got the brisket and grits which is apparently their signature dish. This was delicious. It wasn't too heavy, and there was plentiful brisket to pair with the grits. The cherry tomatoes seemed raw, I thought it was going to be pickled somehow. They ended our meal with yakult. I'd come back here to try other things. I did try a bite of the blue crab curry and it wasn't my preference, and the portion was also smaller.

I ate at her pop-up at Essex Market at the start of the pandemic and then when she opened her first brick and mortar in Murray Hill and am so pleased to have dined here last weekend at her most built out space to date. I've mostly enjoyed her dishes a la carte but she insisted on taking us on a culinary journey of her choosing, so of course we said yes. After the chef took note of our group of 6's dietary restrictions, out came gumbo, kimchi stew, a very delicious umami flavor bomb that was a marinated boiled egg topped with creme fraiche and caviar. Korean fried chicken, watermelon salad, a shrimp and black bean shrimp noodle dish, and lots of steak. Some dishes were evidently a fusion of Korean and Cajun flavors, but others felt strictly Korean. Everything I tried was flavorful, though I found some of the portions a bit precious, particularly since we were sharing as a group. The meat eaters in the group left full because there was so much steak brought out to the table, but the tofu alternatives brought out for me wasn't quite enough to leave me sated. We were all willing to be spendy for this meal, but I think I would have gotten more if I had just ordered a la carte. We paid about ~$80 per person and I don't feel like I got $80 worth of food. I would gladly return but would personally opt out of the tasting menu journey.

There was only one table so not sure why the wait was so long. It seemed like they didn't even start the order till we got there. We waited another 15 minutes more and it was definitely not worth it. The lobster roll was overcooked and SUPER dry covered in heavy seasoning. The bread was drenched in oil and so greasy. The only highlight was the fries which is kinda sad if you pay $34 and the highlight is the fries with a one hour wait time. Won't be coming back again.

Reply to Business Owner:…read more Hello Jaffa, Thank you for the response. I understand seasoning and heat can affect appearance; however, my concern was not solely discoloration, but the overall quality and texture of the food upon arrival. The crab meat was stuck to the shell (rubbery), the mussels lacked freshness and texture, and the sausage was unusually rubbery--issues that go beyond presentation or residual heat. I shared my experience honestly based on the meal I received. While I appreciate the offer to resolve it had I called, posting a review reflects my experience as a customer ordering delivery, which is a service you offer. Unfortunately, this order did not meet the standard I expected based on my experience. I'm glad to hear you're open to addressing concerns directly, and I hope future delivery orders are more consistent. -------------------- My Initial Review: I "really" wanted to enjoy this meal, especially since I've ordered from here before via Uber Eats and decided to give it another try. Unfortunately, the food quality was disappointing. The snow crab legs had gray shells, and the meat was stuck to the shell, rubbery, and lacked freshness. The mussels were deep orange in color, had no real texture, and some were actually dry, which made them unpleasant to eat. The sausage was also very rubbery--I had to bite hard just to get through it. Flavor alone couldn't make up for the overall texture and freshness issues. This may be a place that's better enjoyed in person, but based on my experiences, the seafood does not seem to travel well for delivery. I truly wanted this to be a satisfying meal, but unfortunately it missed the mark.

The AYCE menu includes a variety of items including appetizers (broccoli, calamari, corn, iron steak, crab rangoon, clam chowder, fried rice, garlic noodles, chicken wings, spareribs, general Tso's chicken, spring rolls, edamame, french fries, and more) and main seafood entrees (steamed or hand breaded shrimp, blue crab, dungeness crab, snow crab legs, crawfish, salmon, seabass, mussels, steamed clams, raw oysters and clams, and more). The items I would recommend the most are iron steak, crab rangoon, blue crab, snow crab legs, and crawfish. The seafood is fresh, and if you love seafood, this AYCE meal is a good value for the variety and amount you get. There is no limit to how much you can order at a time; you can order as many rounds as you'd like. Service: Service is excellent here; staff are friendly and very attentive. They come to check on you throughout the meal and clear empty dishes. Food comes out very quickly after you place an order. The staff are also nice about giving you another menu to place another order. They are generous with their portions and food unlike other AYCE places that seem to not want you to order as much. Ambiance: The restaurant is big and spacious; seating is comfortable. There are tables and booths that can accommodate both small and large groups. The restaurant is kept clean, and the decor is very nice. During the warmer months, there's outdoor seating in Mongolian-style tents on the patio that overlooks Surf Avenue and Luna Park. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant if you like seafood!
