It's been a while since I felt inspired to write a yelp review and unfortunately, SUGARFISH Williamsburg has positioned itself in the crossfire of my fingertips. Now, this does not come from a place of hate but solely an observation of sheer absence of the art of hospitality. My boyfriend and I were sat in the last two seats of the bar by the kitchen window, next to the door and the restrooms. In any establishment, this area of the house is most likely the least desirable. Tonight's waitstaff made sure to live up to that expectation, which they most certainly did not do intentionally...however there was zero interest in making our experience (let alone anyone else's) something special. Needless to say it was memorable, but not in a positive way, not in the slightest. Our experience was filled with the clanking of dishes, haste, theatrics of stacking wasabi, ginger, and edamame all the way up a servers arm. Though his efforts of balancing these dishes could be seen in his eyes as talent, they emitted nothing but idiocy. The noise of customer chatter is one thing but stomping, running (frequently), and yelling by the waitstaff is simply obnoxious. Although our meal met our standards of what we expected from a Nozawa restaurant, the staff needs a stern reminder that dining experiences begin and end with the person curating that experience. Our food was delicious, but the atmosphere of the restaurant resulted in us grabbing our check and departing before our last course made it to the table. Hats off to the staff of SUGARFISH Williamsburg for providing an incredible example of extremely poor hospitality. read more

Walked in ~2:15pm on a Saturday as a party of 2 and was seated right away! My friend and I both got the Nozawa Trust Me set ($52), which properly fueled us post Pilates. It was my first time here and I enjoyed the meal! I was overall very satisfied with the quality of the pieces throughout. It's just a notch below omakase, but it was still great! I really enjoyed the Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi plate at the beginning - the ponzu sauce paired really nicely with it. My other favorite piece was the New Zealand Sea Bream Sushi, which was topped with citrus salt, yum! I got a tip from my friend, who said to ask the server for their Birthday Registration card check in, where if you fill out the card at least twice within the year prior to your birthday, you get a free "Trust Me" or "Trust Me Lite" meal on your birthday! It was super easy to sign up + you don't have to subscribe to a newsletter or anything like that lol Would def return, as I felt that it was good value for all the course pieces (14 in total) you get, which is comparable to the value of omakase. read more

I was very surprised by the quality of the sushi here, but every piece I had was delicious! I got one of the omakase sets, and everything tasted fresh and was balanced nicely. The sushi rice was seasoned as well as I can ask for. Service was good too, and the ambiance inside was nice and modern. While it's not a cheap restaurant by any means, I do feel like the quality justifies the price. The set meals are a pretty good sized portion as well. read more

Tried a different location this time and ordered all of the sashimi, including the ankimo for the first time. I ordered it without even knowing what it was. It was definitely interesting... odd and unexpected, but fun to try something new. Everything else was super yummy as usual, and the Dangerous Grab hand roll is always a reliable favorite. Ordering is simple I always do the trust me or the Nozawa trust me if I'm feeling a bit more hungry. The food comes out promptly. The ambience and service are nice. I went for lunch with a friend. Very friendly and well informed staff. I asked for advice on the most appropriate set menu for our appetite teh waitress guided us to the first lunch set-menu - not the most expensive - but the correct one for us. Initially daunted by the six courses, they were genuinely the perfect mouthful for each of us and the perfect balance of Unami and sweet flavours. I was pleasantly surprised that tuna toro rolls were perfection and high grade sushi. It's drops one star because the ambience was alittle too American. read more

i got the trust me set and was super disappointed. i left sugarfish feeling full but the sushi was just not good... my favorite item in the entire set was probably the edamame which i think speaks volumes. the fish tastes rubbery and the nigiri fell apart so easily when i went to pick it up. literally the rice crumbled before my very eyes with every other dish. top it off, they don't taste apple pay which is on me for assuming. the server was nice about it and let me leave my phone behind to grab my wallet from my office but the lack of mobile pay is just really surprising for such an establishment, especially when other locations in the city do have that option. wayyy overhyped and you can get better sushi elsewhere in williamsburg read more

We walked in on a Friday evening and it was very busy. We put our name down and walked around the neighborhood. There is a decent amount of waiting space in the restaurant too. We ended up waiting longer than the waitress told us but were glad that we were able to sit and wait inside. The ambiance was dark and service was friendly. There were 2 restrooms and separate soaps to use before and after eating. My friend and I both ordered the Nozawa Trust Me which was the right amount of food. The quality of the fish is okay and the price is reasonsable considering it is a no tipping restaurant. I used to love Sugarfish but then they raised their prices and decreased the portions and now it's more of a factory that doesn't really care about the customer experience. They have expanded and have so many locations that they are spreading themselves too thin. When you are a party of two it's really easy to get seating at places that dont do reservations- especially on a rainy day! the inside is dim light and no music which is good because it allows for us to have conversations without having to scream over music and other table conversations. plus i always love a dimly lit dinner - creates a cool environment We ordered the Trust Me and Nozawa Trust Me. Everything came our super fast and well prepared. For the pricepoint the quality is very delicious - and theyre rice is super delicious. Maybe I went on an off day, but I've had sugar fish many times at various locations, but today was kind of disappointing. I got the trust me light, which hindsight I'm glad I did since I don't think I would've wanted to eaten more pieces. The tuna sashimi, yellowtail, and toro hand roll were the only okay-ish items. Everything else was a let down. The rice was too soft and overpowered most of the fish except for the yellowtail and the toro. I could hardly taste the fish and some of the pieces came with sesame seeds, which was all I could taste. I'm a huge fan of their other restaurant, Kazunori, which focuses on hand rolls. I expected the hand roll to be on par with Kazunori's, but the seaweed was too soft and not crispy and the rice took away the focus from the toro. I took two of my friends here and they also shared the same sentiment about the rice not being good and the fish not being the best quality. read more

Just stopping by to update my review! This is now the 4th time i've been to this location, and i'm SO happy that everything was as I remember and KNOW this place to be. Service was exceptional, fish was buttery melt in your mouth delicious and everything was just on point. The last time we had a little blip but everything has been resolved, thank you endlessly to the RM and the AM along with the staff for making our return so welcoming. Great addition to the area! My boyfriend and I stopped in for a speedy hand roll dinner and were able to walk in. We grabbed seats at the counter in the back and tried the blue crab hand roll, toro hand roll and scallop hand roll. The scallop was my favorite, followed by the blue crab. Whenever I go to LA my first dining spot is always SUGARFISH. They have unparalleled quality fish and perfectly prepared omakase bites. If you are into California rolls this place isn't for you - go outside the box and taste perfectly prepared pieces well worth the price point. Wow. Me and my friends came here (some returning some first time) and we were all so satisfied with the quality and taste of everything. I'm very picky about raw sushi and I hate when there is even the slightest fishy taste. On their menu it states sushi should never be fishy, so I immediately knew I was going to love this place. I love this place so much that I would literally clean dishes in the back for 12 hours if they paid me in their sushi every day. Just wow. The only negative is that it's a no tip restaurant and you can tell the staff doesn't care much about you and they roll their eyes when you want to order more or need them for anything. This aspect brought the experience down a notch but I quickly forgot about it when I was eating because the food is that good. I recommend getting the Nozawa Trust Me because the cuts of fish aren't the biggest. read more

It's been years since I've had SUGARFISH so I was excited to see it near my hotel. Amazing food and service. I remembered how great the food is. I wish they would slow down a little, we got the Trust Me and it seemed like they were constantly picking up and putting down dishes. The quality of fish here is incredible and once you realize how well-priced it is, it's difficult to stay away. Most of us ordered THE NOZAWA TRUST ME but some, who weren't as hungry, ordered the TRUST ME instead. Both were absolutely incredible and each bite was so different but full of flavor. Note: I am celiac (gluten allergy) and they were very accommodating to ensure they removed any soy sauce or ponzu from my dish. However, they do not have gluten free soy sauce (not really sure why not as it's an easy win with customers) so I HIGHLY recommend bringing your own sauce. Obviously, it's not recommended and probably frowned upon but just keep it on the low and enjoy your meal read more

I want this to be a general and honest review for everyone but my husband is half Japanese so I have to deal with the snobbery. Came here on a Saturday night to find a two hour wait. We decided to put our names down and galavant around Williamsburg. We received a notification that the table was tray and came back. Upon returning, they still needed some more time so we hung out in their waiting area which took up a decent portion of what seemed kind a small restaurant. We decided to go with the Trust Me Lite. It came with edamame, a tuna sashimi with yuzu, four sushi pieces, and a toro hand roll. This was $30 with tip included. It's a no tipping establish. Service was attentive and quick. read more

It was our first time at sugarfish and we didn't realize this was a new location! We decided to walk-in on a Sunday around 6pm and were happy to be seated the min we got there. We probably got lucky since we saw a bunch of people waiting by the time we left around 8pm. They do not take reservations so plan to come at an earlier dinnertime to get seated quickly! It's also a no-tip establishment. We got the trust me nozawa omakase set which was very filling! It had a great selection of what we wanted to try and also some fish that we thought was passable on. We separately ordered sweet shrimp which was yum as well. The sushi itself doesn't seem traditional to a traditional omakase but we thought it was a good value. I stopped in here, one late afternoon, right before the dinner, rush and really enjoy the experience. I was guided along through each piece on my set. And had enough time to enjoy everything. The fish was fresh, and tasty. Great quality. The service was fast and attentive. Inside it's a bit dark and secluded which was nice to get out of the bustling Williamsburg streets. Great meal here! Was blown away particularly by the sea bass with yuzu ponzu. So good! The delicate flavor of the yuzu has now spoiled me for regular ponzu (which I believe is made with everyday citrus fruits). A lovely citrus-y, slightly herbal, umami-packed taste. So basically ... when you go here, try anything prepared with yuzu ponzu. Albacore was great, salmon roe was great, and we had some great fatty tuna as well (belly, I believe ... or maybe cheek?). Staff is super-polite, efficient, and non-intrusive. Price is surprisingly reasonable considering this is in the heart of Williamsburg. $170 for two people (the 170 includes 4 beers, tax and the no-tip hospitality fee). We were introduced to SUGARFISH in LA a few years ago so whenever we come to NYC now we try to go. The Williamsburg location was dark and cozy, and we were seated on a Sunday night within 10 minutes of arriving. The "trust me" style of ordering is easy and lets you try many different items on the menu. Fish is melt in your mouth tender and flavored to compliment, which negates the need for lots of soy sauce. And try the sake! It pairs wonderfully with sushi. Great service too. Not cheap, but well worth the money. read more

I'm not sure how a corporate restaurant is this good. The fish is impeccable, delicious and fresh. The rice is very good, though the nigiri rolls are a little loose...definitely eat with your hands sushi. Service is excellent, particularly if you are in the mood for great food but don't feel like a protracted dining experience. The set menus (ok, not really omikase) are well thought out. I really love that there's nothing overly creative here. This isn't someone's 'take' on sushi and sashimi, it's the classics done really well letting you really enjoy an individual piece of fish - taste and texture. My girlfriend put me onto Sugarfish and it changed my life. First time I dined at this location it was a spiritual experience - the rice was warm, the fish was cold and the service was next level.
