After our recent trip to Japan my husband and I were craving quality sushi and had read great things about Oita. Happy to say they were true and we will definitely be back! Above all, the fish quality and freshness is excellent and the nigiri felt especially authentic (not too much rice, sizable cuts of fish done in the traditional style). The akami and hamachi belly were particularly great. The toro scallion and king salmon crunch hand rolls were also favorites. Our opinions were more split on the spicy tuna crispy rice (I loved, husband was more lukewarm) and dumplings (obviously very freshly prepared but quite fried). The overall ambience is airy, quiet and calm and service was warm and fast. We would have loved to try the cocktails as they sound really interesting -- next time! read more

Beautiful space with fun sushi rolls in Park Slope! The inside of the restaurant is very sleek and minimalist with nice wooden accents- very calming. The space is pretty large, with a good amount of tables in addition to bar seating. I split the tuna crispy rice and the signature roll set and it was plenty of food for two. The signature roll set had an assortment of interesting and unique rolls ranging from truffle to mango- my fave was the New York crunch w potato crisps on top. The tuna crispy rice was also a bit different- served as a tartare w crispy rice chips for dipping. Very crispy and tasty though! Service was super attentive and very welcoming. Beautiful, minimalist environment. Though it was so minimalist and quiet it was almost a litttle awkward. Omakase was delicious but not traditional in the sense that each piece of sushi was given to us all at once. I didn't love that and don't get why they couldn't just present each piece one at a time as it was prepared - we were sitting at the chef's bar anyway. The place was pretty empty when we went. Honestly, this is a solid local sushi spot. The fish was really fresh and nothing tasted fishy. Cuts were solid. I got the sashimi and sushi set, and was super happy. I love simple sushi (I gravitate towards sashimi or sushi). Service was slightly slow, but the servers were hustling. I had nothing going on, so it didn't bother me. Ambiance is really calm! They have seating for 4-6 people groups and or if you come in pairs or alone. I got a peach sour to start the night and I recommend coming during happy hour for a cheaper price! My personal favorites were the Kanpachi, king Salmon, Sake and Wagyu because they melt in your mouth and each fish was so clean and simple! *Every piece had a decent amount of wasabi beneath the fish and if you're not a big fan of it, I would suggest you make a note to your hostess!! Came here with a friend for some sushi. The waitress was super nice . We shared a few rolls and nigiri. I can't remember the names unfortunately and I forgot to take the pictures of them. But everything was very fresh and flavorful. The picture is of the happy hr potato appetizer which was very well seasoned and delicious. We ended the meal with a nice cup of hot tea. This is a fantastic sushi place that's very well priced! Genuinely one of my favorites of all time. All of the signature rolls are very unique and have amazing flavors. Expensive for what it is. We had a reservation for the omakase at the bar. We were pretty upset when we found out that they don't offer the typical omakase experience and they just hand all the pieces to you on a plate now. That should have been disclosed on the reservation. Aside from that, each piece tasted mediocre and lacked flavor. The set A rolls were also not that great and tasted like cucumber/avocado rolls in disguise. The whole experience was expensive for what it was and was not worth it in my opinion. For the price, we could've gotten a true omakase experience somewhere else with fresher/better tasting food. When you walk up to Oita, you will be greeted by a lovely stone arch entrance, well decorated, kitschy yet adorable. Soft fluorescent lights and light hardwood creates a calming atmosphere in which you will enjoy some of the best sushi the entire city has to offer. If you're considering this for date night, it's yes. Beware that Oita does add a little wasabi to many of their à la carte options. If you don't like spice, let them know and they will accommodate. Oita opened during year 1 of the pandemic, and I'm so happy to have a fantastic sushi spot close to me. It's my special occasion spot... although it doesn't need to be, it's just I would spend all my $$$ here. I've gotten takeout for NYE and recently did the 16-course omakase experience on a Thursday night. We were the only ones partaking in that experience so it felt extra special! The fish is outstanding and compared to Manhattan spots, super affordable. Loved some of the heat added to some of the courses, but it wasn't what my partner was into, so it was really kind the chef was able to flavor them at different spice levels. And to top it all off, because we were there to celebrate a birthday, we got ice cream on the house (scoop each of green tea and brown sugar... both so good and great together)! Decent omakase at a decent price! Is it the best omakase I've had? No, but I was also happy with my meal overall. The ambiance of the restaurant is super cute. The chefs are very responsive to what you want (I.e. I found the amount of wasabi they used a bit overpowering but they were happy to adjust to my tastes). The 15 course omakase is enough to leave you feeling comfortably full. I also ordered the spicy tuna with crispy rice, which was seasoned perfectly and I highly recommend getting. Came here for a quick lunch. Ordered the tofu, fish, and hand roll set. First and foremost, the hand rolls took longer than needed to arrive and when it did, it was the wrong order. Not only that, the waiter was lost. He brought us the sushi rolls set instead of the hand rolls set. When we alerted him of this, he had no idea what to do. What we found out actually happened was - he placed the wrong order for us. He tried to persuade us to keep the TWO orders of 4 sushi rolls. There was no way in hell I could finish that much food. Then we had to wait for them to prepare the hand rolls, prolonging the wait time once again. Now the hand rolls...thinking about it just makes me laugh. It's worse that the regular sushi spots that I get takeout from and way more expensive. The menu said crabmeat, but what it really was is imitation crabmeat - Kani. I was expecting real crabmeat. It just felt like they took a bunch of cheap ingredients, put it together, and tried to make it look fancy. One of the better Japanese option around Park Slope which offers omakase. The quality of the fish is fresh and their cooked items are also very good. Their kaarage chicken and the dashi tofu was a hit for my non-raw fish friends. The spicy tuna with crispy rice was very good as well. The omakase is not the best I've had but definitely a very good one. For $95, you get 15 pieces which is enough to fill you up without feeling sick and overstuffed. Sadly, they only offer mochi ice cream as dessert but you are surrounded by dessert places in the area so not a big deal. It's a little too bright for my liking, but some may enjoy the refreshing fluorescent light. My boyfriend and I were looking for quality sushi which they do have, but a little pricier for the portions. We got set A which came with spicy tuna crispy rice appetizer and 3 different set of rolls. In addition, 2 hand rolls, one yellowtail roll, Otoro appetizer, and a bottle sake which all came down to $202 with tip. Quick rundown: good service accommodating large groups, real wasabi! Service: Dining out with large group can be difficult sometimes and adding a baby to the mix makes finding a suitable restaurant even more difficult. Oita NYC has a handful of partitioned smaller tables for groups of 2-4 if you stack tables. There are also two larger tables that can fit 6 people comfortably on benches. I had a large group reservation with 7 adults and 1 baby that ended up being 8 adults with a baby. They were able to able to let us move the two large tables together to have more comfortable seating. Timing of the food could have been better though. I get that we were a large group but there was only really one person make sushi related dishes. One person on our table did the omakase so he started getting food earlier which is okay. However the rest of the table just seemed to receive food as it was prepared. Our group didn't really care but some groups tend to like to wait for everyone to receive the food before eating. It was also surprisingly not busy on a Saturday night. The rest of the restaurant didn't really fill up entirely for the 2 hours we were there but there was quite a steady stream of customers picking up food to-go. Food: Tuna crispy rice - 4/5. Can't say that I've had many crispy rice dishes but the rice was well fried without being overly hot or oily. You're free to put as much or as little fish as you would like. Overall flavor is well balanced. Signature Temaki set - 4/5. Definitely have some interesting flavors in the mix! The yellow tail with pesto and mango was my favorite bite. It's these creative flavors that keeps sushi interesting. My only gripe is that it was difficult picking up the preformed rice/topping onto the seaweed. I've seen other recent photos where all temakis were served on a taco style tray but I had to build my own as I ate. Also the real wasabi that came with all sushi was a huge plus! Kaiden Don - 3.5/5. Overall a really pretty dish but there was so little rice for it to be a full meal. Not what you'd normally expect from a sashimi rice bowl. Fish quality seems to be good but a bigger portion would help. Soft shell crab tempura - 3/5. This came 2 crabs per order, 4 pieces in total. It was served with a lemon wedge and ponzu I think? Perhaps I'm so used to the crab being in a spider roll topped with eel sauce. I just didn't feel like the crab itself had much taste. Mommy rose - ??? Ate here early March. Was surprised to get a prime time seating for 3 on a Saturday night. Our son got a salmon entree which was nicely prepared. Cooked perfect. Wife got a few rolls. The Yasai Trio and the shishito peppers with that yuzu salt were both satisfying. The right amount of crunch, umami, and citrus. A nice precursor to our next course, the signature set. A nice selection of Oita signature rolls. Fast forward to our January 2022 visit and hooray- there were Omakase options!! I opted for the nigiri and sashimi option. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was so obvious that the kiddos wanted MY food. The chef's selections created such a vibe for me, I figured I couldn't keep it to myself. I gave them a taste and their tastebuds too were awakened. We went an hour before they closed at 3PM to prepare for the evening hours (4PM-10PM) We placed 3 orders of the Sushi & Sashimi Trio, a Signature Roll set & Temaki Signature set along with drinks. Overpriced Sashimi set. The signature sushi set came on a metal dish which stuck on the rice. Grabbing the sushi pieces proved difficult. Ever had deconstructed sushi? Besides the stuck on sushi, the rolls were not packed well. Very thin layer of rice. Temaki set came with separate seaweed which was DIY (due to covid?). That was unexpected. The hand rolls come out all on a plate but seaweed on the side and you just grab it with the seaweed when you're ready to eat. I wasn't a huge fan of the yellowtail (maybe I didn't like that it was with pesto) from the set but everything else was good! We also had the spicy tuna on crispy rice as an appetizer. Came here after trying out Nami Nori and was excited to see another place that specializes in hand rolls in this style. Unfortunately this place wasn't as good as I had hoped for it to be. We had ordered iced matcha lattes, which came in cute glasses but the taste was barely there. We also ordered the braised hamachi kama, spicy tuna on crispy rice, and two temaki signature sets. I wasn't a fan of the braised Hamachi kama since the flavor disnt complement well with the fish and the radish also ended up being slightly fishy. The spicy tuna on crispy rice was good, the crispy rice balanced the tuna tartar well, and I liked that you can taste a bit of the spice, as opposed to none. The temaki set was ok depending on the roll. The roll wasn't made the best and the rice tends to stick on the wrapper when pulling off the film. It consisted of 1. Salmon, Spicy crab, Pico de Gallo - decent 2. Spicy Tuna, Crispy Shrimp - not what I expected but was decent 3. Yellowtail, Basil Pesto, Mango, Pine nut - pesto flavor was too overwhelming 4. I don't think it's blowing my pants away and i felt like the ambiance of the restaurant is a bit off. it's like bright yet dim at the same time and dead quiet, with way too much room in between so it makes it feel really empty.
