After some conversing I quickly found out the waiters had previous experience working in Midtown Manhattan - they have top notch service and I've dined Michelin star before so trust me when I tell you service was superb. The food was excellent! I love their seaweed salad can't get it anywhere else, the fungi appetizer is great for mushroom lovers Also had the nagiri salmon roe -yum and spicy salmon roll with miso dressing- highly recommend the miso topping instead of old plain spicy mayo

Edamame uni shashimi 3 rolls
Nicole D.

Had an excellent dinner Friday night. The wine selection was breif but the sake list was large. We ordered a french sparkling white. The server managed to make a make shift wine chiller when asked. The edamamae was typical. The uni shashimi was on the nightly special list and a must have. My mango roll was delicious with a generous portion of fresh avacado on top. The sushi was fresh and delicious.

Dessert sake flight (strawberry, plum, yuzu)
Sherise K.

Some of the best sashimi I have EVER had! Dessert sake flight: Yuzu was the best, plum was okay, strawberry was a tad too sweet. Kara age: Perfectly crispy and with the lemon? Phew. Otoro sashimi: Amazingly fresh. Omakase: Reasonably priced - everything was so fresh and delicious. None of us enjoyed the mackerel. The tuna and the salmon were top tier. The waiter was very nice about making sure we had enough water! It was one of those obnoxiously hot summer days and we were seated outside under the fans.

Yasai Soba

Came in for a casual dinner with a few friends on a Tuesday evening -- no reservation needed, and we were seated immediately! Their vegetarian option (the Yasai Soba) was filling, nutritious, and very tasty -- a win in my book for a place with only a few vegetarian options. Definitely recommend for anyone in the neighborhood looking for a spot that can deal with various dietary restrictions!

The food here is really good! The sashimi is fresh, curry katsu and nabeyaki udon (forgot to take a photo) is fantastic as well! I recommend all the foods, especially the omakase. There was a nice, cozy vibe to the place. Our server was very attentive and my friends and I had a great time here. We would love to be back!

buta kakuni (slow cooked pork belly)

My wife and I went to New York for our 2021 summer vacation. My brother-in-law and his new wife live there so it was inevitable we would find our way to Brooklyn. My brother's new bride is a Japanese national so we kept begging her to take us somewhere as authentic as possible. She said GEN had food that is genuinely authentic to Japan. Not all the dishes but some; specifically the marinated octopus. I won't lie the marinated octopus was a very polarizing flavor profile. We went all out and ordered udon noodles with egg and shrimp, seaweed salad, Agedashi tofu, pork katsu, these fried chicken things, a tempura medley, and the star of the show - buta kakuni (slow cooked pork belly). The entire meal was spectacular. What more is there to say?

Everything on the menu is divine! Truly couldn't recommend this place enough. They have so many vegetarian options and I love that they do tofu katsu!

Godzilla and Chirashi
Tim J.

Decided to give this place a try after yelp review and sad to say that I am very disappointed. After paying $48 dollars, all I received was very small portion of food that has very fishy smell to it. I was expecting fresh sushi based on reviews I read, but what I got was cheaply made sushi. The godzilla roll was made without any care it seemed and looked worse than basic maki that you could get from other restaurants. Just leaving my honest review here, but hope other people's experience is better than mine.

get the sushi! really fresh sushi but smaller rolls that had a lot of rice. have had better curry but still pretty yummy. quite large portions for noodle dishes! also comes out super hot have daily specials that i would recommend looking at super accommodating but a bit slow. gave our party of 5 free beer for our wait and two bowls of edamame. really can't get over how kind they were with serving us our food authentic green tea for their dessert too. appreciate them knowing there are 5 of us and gave us 5 spoons and forks for our shared dessert i asked for a box for the soba and they took my bowl to the back to pack up. it took quite some time to return but they came back with separated bowls for the noodles and soup base which was super appreciated except i left it behind which i was quite upset about especially for their efforts :( would come back for their good food and great service honestly

Godzilla roll + Earl Grey Umeshu
Annie T.

This place will greet you until 11pm if you are looking for a light fare on a Saturday. Welcoming vibe here. Their cozy atmosphere is great for a solo dinner or if you are in a group. I was seated right away since it wasn't crowded. Attentive and helpful staff. I based all my choices after exchanging ideas with the waiter. Their drink menu mainly consisted of wines and sake. I ventured out and chose the Earl Grey Umeshu under the plum wine section. Very good. Not overly sweet, served over ice. Thoroughly enjoyed the Godzilla roll (shrimp tempura, eel and avocado). It was good enough for one person without being overly full. Overall solid meal. Impressed with this place. I could see myself coming back here to try out more dishes.

My friend eating sushi
Caitlin W.

My friends and I enjoyed our food so much we forgot to take photos! I got the eel don - my first time eating it and oh my god do not underestimate the simplicity of this dish. The eel is so rich and savory but a light texture. We also had top quality sushi and the freshest seaweed salad you can't even dream of. The seaweed selection was unique if you're used to store bought / western seaweed salad. The soba noodles tasted handmade and the greens special tasted like it was made with tremendous care.

The rolls here are the star of the show. The ramen was okay. The inside area is very nice, but the outside area is only okay.

My husband had the kaishin don, I had the Ozakaya donburi set and our girls shared the shoyu tonkatsu ramen. The fish was so incredibly fresh here and the rice was seasoned perfectly. My donburi set also came with dashi broth that the waitress later brought over to pour on top of the leftover rice in my bowl to be enjoyed at the end of the meal. The broth and rice combination was really comforting and satisfying. This dish was something I wanted to try in Japan but did not get a chance to experience when there, so I was excited to try it at Ozakaya. I was really pleasantly surprised by the ramen here as well. Although the pork could have been better/more tender, the broth was rich and seasoned so well and not too salty like other places. Last but not least, the service here was excellent and efficient. I would definitely come back here the next time I visit Brooklyn as there were many dishes on the menu I wanted to try!

This place is super popular and I get why. It was packed but the service was insanely quick and efficient, which I appreciated. We shared the chirashi (9/10) and a spicy tuna roll (7/10) and it was honestly more than enough food for both of us. The sashimi is chef's choice so you're getting whatever's freshest that day. Overall, the quality was excellent. A couple of pieces were a little on the flavorless side, but nothing that ruined the experience. I'd still give it a solid 9/10 and would definitely come back if I'm in the area again.

Food: 3/5 I'm a huge sushi fan, so I was excited when I saw a deluxe sashimi set on the menu. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The scallop was thinly sliced and lacked the rich texture I was hoping for. The salmon and other cuts were decent, but short and oddly shaped--chunky yet small, which made the whole presentation feel a bit off for something labeled deluxe. We also tried to branch out and ordered the short rib entree. For $21, it was shockingly small--definitely a single-person portion, not sharable. I added extra ikura to a salmon donburi bowl for $2, but it was barely a teaspoon's worth--just enough to say it was there. Oddly, the salmon slices in that bowl were thinner than the sashimi we had just eaten, and overall, it left me still hungry even after sharing a maki roll. Lastly, my husband ordered a green salad, which somehow took the entire meal service to arrive. When it finally came, it was just plain romaine, cucumbers, radish, and dressing. For a dinner that clocked in at over $150 (after tip), we definitely left underwhelmed. Service: 3/5 This part wasn't bad, just confusing. We were seated quickly, but the pacing of the meal was strange. Our seaweed salad and soups came out promptly, but the green salad came last, after the hot dishes and nearly after my husband finished eating. Also, a small thing--but when I'm paying $16 for four oysters, I want to know what kind they are. The menu just said "West Coast oysters," but our server couldn't tell us the variety or origin. Not a huge deal, but it added to a general lack of polish that didn't quite match the pricing. I don't think I'd return. For the price, there are better sushi options in Brooklyn with higher quality, better portions, and clearer service. Still, I appreciate new spots opening up in the neighborhood, and I'm always happy to try something new. Hopefully they refine the menu and service with time.

Lots of people came in and out for takeout orders so that seems to be more of the target audience. Service was quick and polite, we were there until 9:30 and they definitely seemed ready for us to be out of there before the 10PM closing time. As for the specialty rolls, there were some pretty creative options - don't shy away from seemingly odd combinations because the flavors really do work well together. I appreciated the rice:fish ratio on all the rolls, the rice was a thin layer letting the flavor of the other ingredients really come through. The plain spicy tuna roll on the other hand was filled with spicy tuna mixed with something crunchy - maybe puffed rice? It seemed to be an unnecessary filler, I would have preferred just fish. I enjoyed the Lovers Dream and Golden Sunset roll the most. While I was debating it while ordering, in hindsight I would definitely get two rolls per person, maybe more if you're really hungry.

I saw the strong Yelp reviews and decided to take the leap with a pickup order. We ordered two specialty rolls and a spicy tuna roll. The restaurant itself is smaller than I expected, so I'm glad we opted for takeout. The staff was super friendly, and we only waited a few minutes while they completed our order. The Mystic Dragon roll was the standout for me-absolutely delicious. It had a variety of textures that gave it a great mouthfeel. I think this was my favorite of the three. All the flavors complemented each other beautifully. The strawberry sauce was unexpected but surprisingly worked! I love unique flavor combinations, and this one did not disappoint. The Torched King roll was also excellent. Salmon is my go-to for sushi, and the light torching gave it a subtle smoky flavor that I loved. The yuzu chili sauce added a nice kick--really flavorful and well-balanced. The Spicy Tuna roll was a classic and, of course, delicious. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place.
