This is our second visit to RR, with the last time being about 15 years ago. We were staying at the Grand resort and this was a close place to get dinner. The atmosphere was great and the view is amazing. That's about where the amazement ended for us. There were 5 of us including 2 adults and 3 small kids. We ordered adult meals across the board to include salmon, steak, chicken fried steak, brisket, etc. the brisket was VERY dry and had to ask for bbq sauce to try and moisten it up enough to eat...unfortunately even that didn't make a difference. The filet mignon was ordered med rare yet came out more med well so my wife had to send it back. The server who delivered her steak was quick to take it back when he seen she wasn't thrilled with how overcook it was, he was quick to get a new one fired. The new one came out only slightly better but still overcooked and she just accepted it since she was so hungry. The salmon wasn't good either, dry and lacked flavor. We were never brought refills for our non alcoholic drinks and weren't asked if we wanted another round for our cocktails. Service overall was just ok and the food overall wasn't anything better than I could have got at Dennys for much less. For $200 I expected a much better experience and better tasting food. Oh and don't forget that they automatically add gratuity. Guessing they are use to providing subpar and are often under tipped because of this so they just auto add the 20% gratuity. The server wasn't very experienced either .. didn't have the answers to most of our questions. The butter they serve with the fry bread is stale ... but then again so is the fry bread and biscuits. Seriously don't expect anything good regarding food. 3 stars for the service - My biggest gripe about the service was I called ahead to be added to the waitlist as their website recommended you do so and was told you can't call ahead until after 8pm. However, when I got there I was asked if I called ahead and I told the hostess I was told on the phone they weren't allowing people to call ahead. She looked perplexed and then told me the wait was going to be about 30 minutes. Very disappointing as it made me feel like you could call ahead to reserve a spot on the waitlist, but the person I got on the phone just didn't want to go through the trouble. Great little place to have a celebration. We came here for my dad's 60th birthday. We made reservation that they take for parties of 8 or bigger. 19% gratuity is automatically added. Which is good, because while our server was nice, she was not smart. I would have tipped her less so they probably do this for their staff. The food is just so so. I think the favorite at the table was probably the cotton candy honestly! Where this place is special is the atmosphere. The live music sounds great and the view of Phoenix is awesome. The food is right out the salad bag. Appetizers right out of the freezer into the fryer. Some did like the loaded chips. Service took some time we had a large group but they wouldn't accommodate us even with a table set up already which they did not use??? The prime rib had no flavor. The restrooms were horrendous dirty , small and tight. This is a big restaurant?? Need some light in restrooms but then you could really see how dirty they are. I'm sorry but this place is not cheap, it is in a nice place, good view wow. The ambiance I guess is a roost for sure. The servers are kind and helpful. I wouldn't recommend , Texas Roadhouse much better. Sorry ate here 20 years ago much better then. This may very well be a tourist destination but it is a MUST experience when in the Phoenix/Tempe area. The restaurant is nestled on top of a butte and has sweeping views of the entire Phoenix area. You can see for miles from the back deck. The theme is cowboy. Sawdust on the floors, live country western music, and beers served in giant sized mugs. They have a deck on the second floor with benches and seats you can sit on to watch the sunset. Below the deck are a few sections with fire pits, bars, and tables reserved for corporate and private events. We grabbed some drinks at the bar and took advantage of the outdoor seating on the deck. The view was incredible. Unfortunately, we didn't have time for dinner but looking over at some of the tables the food looked delicious. I plan to come back on my next trip out west. read more

If you love BBQ and sights of the valley, this is your spot . I was part of a large group , so we had lots of stuff , ribeye and chicken smoked to perfection , the bbq sauces were very complimentary not to overpower the smoke . Sides were all great , the smell and the sights from the indoors and patio are worth the visit no matter what . No pretentious rules here. Just like being at a chuck wagon dining in the outdoors . I've been meaning to write this review since we were at Rustler's Rooste in October. We had a large group of 15 for dinner. We were seated in Candra's section. Her friendliness, prompt attention and excellent service helped make our evening wonderful. The food was delicious! The salad, baked beans, and fry bread and biscuits were nice accompaniments to the main dishes. I recommend the jalapeño sausage and brisket. We had a nice view of the city to add to the ambiance. A sweet treat of pink cotton candy was such a nice final touch. Everything was so good that we came back the following week with family and asked to sit in Candra's section again. How thoughtful that she remembered us and her service was outstanding. The food was terrific, just like the week prior. Great service and great food will keep us coming back! Neat place to visit. Rustic with a great view especially as the sun sets. They had a live band, which also was nice. The food is a little pricey, but not really considering the amount that was brought. Had the brisket and jalapeno sausage. Brisket was pretty good to be outside of Texas as was the jalapeño sausage. Atmosphere was interesting if you have never been there. The inside and the area is fun to look at. Service was not the greatest. Waiting was the name of the game. Cross your fingers if they remember the condiments. No ranch in the salad, and no ranch provided when asked when they made it to your side of the table. My goal was the sirloin. They refused to substitute both sides for fries. Fries were extra. Ordered the Big Burger Medium Well. My stomach can't handle ground beef that's red. I've tried. I took off my glasses to eat. Couldn't figure out what was wrong with my burger. Put my glasses on and realized that I almost ate half the burger that was medium rare. Fries weren't seasoned, onion ring batter wasn't cooked all the way. The best part of the meal was the chipotle mayo and jalapeño bacon. The worst part was walking down the hill to my car and getting sick. Asked to be compensated. They said no, I ate too much. They said they walked by and asked if everything was ok. Great atmosphere with good views, but the food is sub par considering the prices. The reason it's so busy is because it's convenient to go there when staying at the resort. There's a shuttle that takes you there which is nice! I would suggest coming here at least once to check it out, but we will more than likely only go there for drinks next time. read more

The tenderloin steak was cooked to perfection! The carrots were very tasty... and I'm not a carrot lover. The salad was so-so with minimal ranch dressing. The two types of biscuits were okay (crumbly buttermilk typeand the flat, overcooked ones). The bbq baked beans were okay. The corn on the cob seemed like frozen ones. Super fun, lively restaurant. It's what I'd picture as an Arizona cowboy restaurant as the atmosphere was super westerny. The restaurants is HUGE, but our waiter didn't forget about us. There was a 45 minute wait during rush hour but it was worth it!! The entrees are expensive with the cheapest around $18, but you get a nice basket of rolls/ fry bread and a big salad for the table. I got the rotisserie chicken and it was incredible. My friends got the all you can eat beef ribs and the meat platter. They loved their meals too! read more

I used to come to Rustler's Rooste for birthdays and graduations quite frequently and I have fond memories of those experiences. However, tonight showed how much it's changed since we last went a few years ago. We saw on Google that they offered take out(see added picture). When we called to place this order the girl told us they were dine in only. It would be great if the business could update this so others don't have the same thing happen to them. So we talked it over and decided to call back and get a reservation/call ahead seating. Note that when we first called it sent us to an automated message where it told us to stay on the line to make a reservation. Their website also states they have call ahead seating for parties 7 or less and reservations for 8 or more(also pictured). When we asked to be placed on the list for 3 people tonight the girl said they were walk in only. Ok... so we go to restaurant and the first thing the hostess asked is if we called ahead... so I say "we tried but we were told we couldn't." Luckily we did get seated right away - but what a bizarre experience. It doesn't seem like everyone is on the same page and understands the policies very well. We got waters right away, ordered as soon as our server stopped by a minute or so later. We ordered the nachos with brisket, the 10oz sirloin, the big burger and a side of the cheesy jalapeño bacon macaroni. Food was very quick to come out! Unfortunately, our server forgot to ring in the nachos. We pointed it out and just asked we not get them at this point and he apologized. We loved the onion rings that came with the burger, and the sweet potatoes and corn that came with the steak. The jalapeño macaroni and the burger was also great. The steak was cooked to medium correctly, but the taste was bland and rubbery. We ate for about 15 minutes and then proceeded to wait a little over 30 minutes for our server to come back to bring us boxes and the check. No water refills, and he only checked in on us once within the first five minutes of getting our food. Everything about our dining experience tonight felt off - hopefully this isn't a typical experience for most people. I don't think we'll be back for a good while. read more

Haven't been here for a few years and came for a retirement party for a friend. We had reservations for 8 and policy is that they won't seat until at least 50% of the party is present. We had a window table which is always great because their location gives you such an awesome view of the city. Drinks ordered with one misstep of a peanut butter beer (it is a real thing) instead of the wheat, which is served in a can...no offer for a glass; had to request one and out came a glass...not chilled. Appetizers were: Onion rings, thick breading and one bite and the whole onion comes right out. Rattlesnake and nopales, both fried...snake is small little nuggets which taste more like breading than snake, or chicken as they say. Nopales were mushy for being fried. Dinners: Grilled shrimp with rice pilaf...best dish for sure! Huge shrimp cooked to perfection and the rice was good...could have more seasoning. Prime rib, ordered rare and thrown on grill to medium. Very tasty, tender, and cooked perfectly. Served with carrots that had no crunch and mushy, over boiled corn. Got a baked spud which was fine. Pork ribs, full rack that was cut in half and served stacked. Top was smothered in sauce and bottom had none. They were tender but really not flavorful due to the sauce, which has a spicy tang to it. Fried shrimp, with huge shrimp that are way over battered...go for the grilled ones! Two had steaks and reported that they were cooked perfect, tender and had good seasoning. We love free food for the table--you get a family-sized bowl of salad with ranch, baked beans, and Indian fry bread. The margarita was nice, though I'd ask for less sugar next time. The beef ribs, I was told, were delicious and they just kept on coming (unlimited). The baked potato is not loaded at all, just a decent option if you're gluten-free. You should put chili on it--they even have vegetarian. At the very end, you get a can (that's right) of cotton candy, whichever flavor they're serving up today. I ate here the other night on a Sunday evening at 5 PM. We had a reservation, but the line was long and it seemed like it was gonna be a while to get in the door. Once we gave our name to be seated they took us to the tiny corner on the 2nd floor against the wall where we would be crammed in with a lot of people around us. There was no view. Other than other buildings and the tile roof. I turned to the waitress and said I don't want to sit here. I haven't been here in 30 years so I would like to sit on the first level where I can look out into the city while the sun is setting. You could tell she didn't wanna have to deal with us so she went and got her manager and then in front of us told her manager we don't like where we were sitting . I said when I called to make the reservation, I told the lady on the phone I hadn't been here in 30 years and I would like to sit where I can look out of the windows. The windows face NORTH. So you can't watch the sunset to the west, but you can see the changing colors in the sky by looking north at the city. The Manager took us down to the first level and put us at seat number one, which had a great view of the city, and there was space around us while other people sat by us and a large table across from us. We didn't feel as crammed in like we did on the second level. We ordered appetizers first. My friend got the baked potato skins and they were huge,six to a tray. They didn't have the fried rattlesnake, but they did have the cactus fries. I got those they were crunchy and had some flavor, but they weren't that great however, the sauce they came with was delicious. She ordered a burger and I ordered the salmon. There was so much food between the appetizers and our meal because it came with two pieces of fry bread and two rolls and two things of butter and two things of cinnamon butter. All of a sudden, three huge tour buses came up the hill. It was about 630 at this time and we had been there since five. We were almost done with our meal. I couldn't understand where those buses were going to park because the parking lot seemed crowded but when I came outside, I noticed they had an area set aside for those buses. You can order dessert from the menu with things like a large lava cake, crème brûlée Keylime pie, etc. but if you don't get dessert, you still get free cotton candy. We went down to the cotton candy counter by the gift store and got a few more bags of cotton candy to go and left a nice tip. I would definitely return to this location because the food was really good except for the cactus fries. I couldn't believe how many people they crammed into the seats and chairs. You couldn't hardly back out of your chair without hitting the chair behind you. It's really amazing how many people they can feed on a Sunday night, including all those buses. read more

We went as a very loud, very chaotic group of old friends coming in from all over with a gaggle of children. 30 people, that felt more like 4000. the sounds that must have come from our table, the horror of the other guests. Yet, Melissa our server and the other staff made us feel as comfortable and looked after as we could have wished for. More than we deserved. I was in town for work and local friends met me for dinner and recommended we go here. First of all.....as you walk in you get to see a super cute cow playing in a little area. Second as you actually enter the building, you are surrounded with just fun atmosphere and knickknacks. There are 2 levels and if you want to go downstairs you have options, you can take the stairs....or the slide! I of course went downstairs the slide! Why wouldn't you. They have live music and the lower level makes it so you can still talk and enjoy the band. Now on to the reason we were there. Food. We started with some cactus bites and rattlesnake bites. My first time having either and I was pleasantly surprised. We also got the onion rings. For my entree I went with the salmon and thought it was cooked and seasoned well. I also decided to order a cocktail the south mountain sunset. I didn't know it would be flaming but it was and delicious. Lastly we ended up with a can of cotton candy. I never turn down sweets. I really hate having to give one star, but this place was super underwhelming. The food was one note, with little texture. Yes, there are big portions, but it made me feel even more guilty with all the waste. The potato skins felt like eating leftover old potatoes. The ribs were over done and dry, with a feeling of trying to compensate for its dryness by slathering it in sauce. The chicken is not as great as they menu makes it out to be. It was dry, underseasoned and just eh. The asparagus was not seasoned at all. It's a pet peeve of mine to have to salt my own dish. The carrots they serve as a side for the dishes are completely overcooked and felt like baby food once it hit the mouth. I will say that the bottled root beer they service is excellent and the service is fast and professional. The ambiance definitely felt country, like entering a hunter's cabin. And the view is pretty awesome. My recommendation is to avoid the food and grab a drink instead. read more

The views from this place are amazing!!!! The food is average, dried out brisket, dried out corn on the cob, carrots had a different flavor too. We also ordered a side of sweet potato fries, which were pretty good. The jalapeño and cheddar sausage had good flavor, not too spicy. The butter choices for the cowboy fry bread are good the fry bread is unique. Really the views and the atmosphere are what this place have a draw for. Our server was friendly, but busy and hard for her to get around to us as frequently as she probably should be around. She did a good job of keeping our drinks full.
