We got the pork belly wedge. This would have been enough. This salad was legit!!! We got the pepper roasted short rib with polenta... it was perfect!! That little poblano flavor sauce with the perfect texture of polenta and the meat was perfectly rendered. It comes with this crazy flavorful corn that is out of this world. Great food, service needs a little bit of work First off, let me start by saying the food was really delicious. I thought they had some interesting and unique items on the menu. It is not your typical steakhouse and you definitely get the feeling that each dish is curated by the chef. We ordered the deviled eggs and what I believe are called short ribs, sliders off of the happy hour menu. I'm assuming that menu changes semi often because they don't have it on their website (which is a plus to me ). The deviled eggs were some of the best I've ever had and were only five dollars. The short rib sliders were a little bit dry, but overall had great flavor. For our main course we ordered the New York strip over fried rice and the crab Rangoon Arancini. Both were incredible with great flavors. The strip was a little bit overcooked for my liking. I ordered medium rare and probably got somewhere around medium well. However, because it was served over fried rice and topped with Katsu miso butter it was still delicious. We also ordered the lobster mac & cheese. The lobster mac & cheese had a great flavor, but to be honest, there was too much of it. Sort of a strange critique, but it could easily have served four people and was just too large for only my wife and I. It was very rich, but overall still very good. The service was a little slow. They had one server and a bartender who were running food. It looked like the server was responsible for every table. We arrived at about 5:00 and got out of there around 6:45. I assume that because they are a smaller restaurant, they may just be getting their feet under them in that regard and can see that issue being easily solved by adding another server. That being said the service at the restaurant was extremely friendly and professional. If I was to change a few small things to put this restaurant over the top, it would be the following: 1. Toasted or warmed up buns for the sliders. 2. Faster service. 3. Smaller portions for the lobster Mac or at least have the server inform smaller tables about how large the portions are. Keep in mind that was the only dish that we felt was just a little too much. Overall, I don't think any of these deficiencies are impactful enough to reduce a five star rating to a four star rating. All the food I saw the other tables also looked really delicious. I highly recommend you try this restaurant. Worst case scenario get yourself a bottle of wine. Sit and talk for a little longer if the food takes some time. It might just be because the chef is putting a lot of work into making sure every dish is perfect. read more

Hidden Gem Prime Rib in Tempe Came here on a Sunday specifically craving prime rib and honestly didn't know what to expect. The location itself throws you off a bit--it's tucked into a shopping center and from the outside you'd never guess there's a serious steakhouse here. But don't let that fool you. We ordered the Sunday prime rib special and were absolutely blown away. A massive, thick-cut prime rib (they say 42 oz and I believe it), cooked beautifully with a perfect crust, incredibly tender, well-seasoned, and full of flavor. The presentation alone was impressive--holiday-level plating that looked like it belonged on a Christmas table. We also ordered the lobster mac & cheese, and this deserves its own shoutout. Real chunks of fresh lobster (not imitation, not shredded), buttery and clean-tasting, folded into a rich, cheesy sauce that actually clings to the pasta instead of being soupy. Easily one of the best lobster macs I've had. I'm in the restaurant industry, and I don't say this lightly: the quality-to-price ratio here is outstanding. The food punches way above what you'd expect, and this place should be packed--especially on Sundays. We meet our friends up here and have lived in Tempe for 26 years but only recently discovered the Peppermill about a year ago. The owners are awesome. Kate is awesome as a server! Decided to try and again after a couple years. Has been a hit or miss experience. Another miss today. Had the corn bread escargot appetizer which took an awful a long time to be served to us and when served the server, let us know that they were out of the pork chop so my friend had to order something else quickly. The cornbread escargot was more like a croissant on top of the overly chewy escargot. I had the Steak and Frits Au Poivre. Steak was two large pieces and cooked perfectly but the sauce was not much more than a gravy. Partner ordered the Mixed Grill bowl and while it was a large portion of everything was not as expected and a little too much spice. Sent it back and passed on ordering anything else. I was underwhelmed with multiple aspects. The server seemed like we were the biggest inconvenience on her day coming during happy hour (we were the only customers present), and then proceeded to change out her nicotine pouch from her lip on the floor. As far as food is concerned, my party ordered the shrimp cocktail, steamed mussels, and half chicken. This was after we had looked at the menu on their website to see if we were interested in their fare and decided yes based on that information. Almost none of the food on their menu online was the food on their menu in person. I understand if you're going to have a rotating menu, but wouldn't you stipulate that menu items are subject to change? I liked my mussels enough, but would ultimately steer away from them. Never have I ever spat out food in public, but the broth it was served in was laden with broken pieces of shell that were unavoidable in the combination of the restaurant's low light and inability to discern shell between herbs. Being a landlocked state and all, I understand the need for frozen fish, but not beating the ever loving life out of it to thaw, which is what I imagine happened. Not really sure what happened, but weren't served. We waited about 20 to 30 minutes, being mostly patient, and quiet. It felt like we were getting stares from the waiters, and then maybe we would get an order taken, but they all avoided our table. My husband, and my 3 year old son was behaved and with us. On 2 different occasions they have been closed during their posted open hours. No sign on the door, nothing posted on Yelp or their voice mail - just closed. The bartender Jake was the one that took care of us. He was so kind, friendly and caring! He checked on us frequently to see if we needed anything. The food was so good! We had the Peppermill Burgers, It was great seeing how all the staff worked together so well! It was great from the second we walked into the door by the lady that greeted us to Jake at the bar and to watching the cooks cooking the meals! Wonderful staff!!! What a gem of a restaurant! We chose The Peppermill for a small after-life celebration the week after my father passed. It was close to home, the happy hour menu looked delicious, and when I called ahead, the hostess was so kind and offered us an intimate setting. From start to finish, it was a wonderful experience. The wine selection was excellent, the charcuterie board alone is worth stopping by for, and everything we tried- from the filet, lobster pierogies to the burgers; was absolutely delicious. We have wanting to try the Peppermill Grill for some time, and i personally did not do a good job with scheduling the reservation and another event. The owners are trying to ensure people to take their time to enjoy the wine and the conversation and not be rushed. It was evident that food preparation and presentation are at the center of this food experience. I really wanted to like this place. The menu looks fantastic with escargot, steak frites and other French-inspired dishes. Yet, as you know, looks can be deceiving . I did have two amazing glasses of wine although the house cab Sauvignon they did not have in a bottle. The red blend was as interesting but again no bottle available. I ordered a broccoli Caesar which was more like broccoli florets with pickled onions and some sauce. Good but not a Caesar. My main was steak frites. Way too salty. I tried to take off the sauce but that made no difference. Barely ate the fries. The server was lovely. In the end, I couldn't even drink my dinner since they ran out of wine so left hungry. I had a great experience dining at the Pepper Mill in Tempe at the corner of McClintock and Elliott. While it has Steakhouse in its name, it has a very broad and inventive menu. Our steak was perfect as was our scallops and our duck. On the appetizer and entree menu, there is a chef's choice item. It is like a mystery, you know what you are getting when you get what you are getting. It is a small intimate restaurant halfway between informal and formal. In town for a concert tomorrow and checked Yelp for dinner ideas. Chose The Peppermill and we're glad we did. The restaurant is small and since we didn't have reservations, we opted for dinner at the bar. Becky was our bartender and as we found out later, co-owner with her husband. We started with appetizers: pork belly, calamari, and bone marrow. We were disappointed that they were out of bone marrow. The other 2 were very tasty and good portion sizes. We decided to share a rib eye steak dinner and we were so glad we shared. The steak was large and a perfectly cooked medium rare. Sides were mac n cheese, broccolini, and potato balls. Overall great experience here. The menu changes! Fairly often I guess because the menu that was on here from 10 months ago was obsolete. The actual meats seem to be similar on the dishes but the sauces and sides and flavors change. Which is pretty cool. This place has a farm to table vibe on the inside. Almost like a chefs table feel as well but without actually being one. It's extremely tiny which I wasn't expecting but super loud. It didn't bother me just thought it was interesting. I got the 16oz ribeye it was very good. This isn't mastros level it's a notch below but it's priced that way. $50 for a steak and sides is a solid deal. The carrot cake was phenomenal. They have a tiny drink menu which oddly enough has my favorite, a black manhattan. Perfectly crafted. I didn't ask for a wine menu nor did I hear it suggested. So I assume it doesn't exist, but the wine is generic here. It's listed by variety and no name of the vineyard. I really enjoyed our experience. Another very good dish was the short rib! read more

I've been here maybe a dozen times. It started out very good. Had great happy hour plates and first few things we tried were good. They have a rotating menu so items are always changing. Cocktails were initially very good. Last time I was there both cocktails I ordered were not made properly. I've had that strawberry martini and aloe drink multiple times. This time... the strawberry one tasted like pure lemon juice. I did send that one back. I tried to explain to the server it wasn't made properly but she just didn't understand what I was saying. I suspect they were batched and someone messed up because the replacement was just as bad. I expect an expensive drink to be made properly. The service has really deteriorated. The last time I was there there were 2 servers. It took forever to get anything and most of the time they were standing around talking. We also came to realize everything is overly sweet. Every chefs whim I've ordered has been covered in a sweet balsamic glaze. Even the beet salad is super sweet. I do appreciate the creative items - the duck confit appetizers (pop tart, chile relleno) are always good, although also usually a bit too sweet. I like the dim lighting and enjoy the music they play. The peppermill is no longer on my regular rotation although I live close so will still pop in occasionally but will stick to sitting at the bar (better service) and will stick to wine over the cocktails. read more

I really like this place. I love going to their weekday happy hour, they have a ton of really good unique appetizer options. In my opinion they are more like mini entrees (they have options with shrimp, pork belly, calamari, beef etc.). I love sitting at the bar and getting a range of appetizers to taste a little bit of everything with a couple of drinks. Their menu is always changing which I love, you can tell the chef takes pride in what he does and likes to keep it fresh and unique. I've also gone outside of happy hour to try their steaks and they were pretty good, nice size and flavorful. I did order my steak medium rare and ended up getting it medium, that was the only negative from my dinner visit. The place itself is a bit small and in a strip mall but it's nicely decorated, feels cozy, and has plenty of parking. Service has always been attentive, friendly, and fast. read more

These wings were fried to perfection, the sauce of the day was carolina bbq sauce. Got the sauce on the side, but this was so good Bleu Cheese+ Short Rib Eggrolls - if imagining small asian like eggrolls, they are not. These eggrolls are almost the size of a wrap, but tasty.  It was also a little heavy on the bleu cheese, that's what I tasted the most, couldn't taste the short rib, which is the main reason I ordered the eggrolls. For the entree, I ordered the special which is the Nacho Smashburger which was excellent and the FRIES OMG!!!! Very mediocre. First... had reservations and was sat promptly, it was pretty dead for a Saturday, so no surprise. However we sat at our table for 20 minutes before we had ANY service, when the waitress came over she said "are you ready to get some food in?" I had the filet and my wife had the NY strip, my "rare plus" filet came out medium and my side of asparagus consisted of only 2 asparagus spears.. though the taste and pepper sauce were quite good despite being over cooked. My wife's NY strip was devoid of any seasoning and had a strip of fat. The place is cute and has an artsy charm to it with about 12 tables, it's a little loud even with only 5 tables but I get it. It's just ehh and mediocre overall, felt very overpriced at $200 for what we received.
