It's a blend of scotch, fresh lemon, honey-ginger syrup, and a smoky Islay scotch float. As someone who enjoys a ginger and citrus, you can see why this drink would appeal to me. This place does it decent. The balance was off. It was smoky but the ginger was light and the citrus only came when you rub the rind across the rim. It wasn't nearly as good as the one I got to steal sips of while on Oahu. That said, I'm not sure I'll be back. There are so many amazing cocktail parlours in DT Chandler, all within walking distance. I really enjoy visiting this bar in DT Chandler. Located under the Crust restaurant, look for the red light, if it's on they're open. My girlfriends and I love to share the apps .. plenty of yummy finger foods. The drink menu is loaded with some really great cocktails, the bartenders can whip you up almost anything. My friend had the Smokey old fashioned last night .. the added smoke definitely elevates that drink. I had a paper plane and it was refreshing, it was the perfect drink on a hot summer day. Don't be fooled by the strange name, The Ostrich is a cool place. True to it's underground speakeasy vibe, the entrance is a bit difficult to find, but - as my friend advised me - just follow the red lights. My amiga and I made our first stop here on our ladies night out. I was pleased to see a nice variety of mezcal cocktails, and I was not disappointed in my Oaxacan Old Fashioned. Just be prepared to let your eyes adjust before you try to look at the menu and decide on your drink because it is VERY dark in this bunker bar. I also suggest dressing up because people get fancy down there. It's pretty popular and ritzy. My friend and I got there early enough in the evening that there was no line, but by the time we left at 8 p.m., there were people waiting at the top of the stairs and an employee checking IDs. I do think that was more of an US problem... out of all espresso martinis i've had, I probably only enjoyed 1 of them. As much as I want to love an espresso martini, I don't think it wants to love me back :( We also tried their nutella cheesecake which was delicious but not very nutella-ey as we expected. The drinks and the food were fantastic. We ordered the Clover Club (favorite drink at our table), Ostrich Pornstar and French Martini. You are able to order food from the Crust Simply Italian restaurant menu and it gets served to you. We ordered the Spicy Garlic Knots and the Calabrian chili it comes with on the side was perfection for that kick spicy food lovers look for. The Margherita pizza tasted fresh, warm, crispy and I would order again. We came in on a Friday night (9pm), we were greeted and sat in a booth for four right away. It was busy, lively, loud, super dark and filled with eye catching artwork/photos. The only part I did not enjoy in my experience was our server. Our server provided us with subpar service because she would not let me finish my statement, would leave me mid-sentence, would forget to check in our table, once I paid she left quickly and didn't give me a chance to request my receipt on her handheld card reader. The bone marrow is also quite good, but my friends and I found we still had a fair bit of marrow when we ran out of toast. The slightly hidden exterior as well as the interior decor both complement the speakeasy vibes quite nicely. One of my go to spots for a cocktail towards the end of the night when you're looking for that chillled out vibe. One thing is for sure, they need to fix that front door because we're standing there pulling on it forever, and it never opened. Maybe it's on a timer, as there were about 5 of us standing out front messing with it trying to get in... Eventually it just took a subtle pull to open... go figure! They have couch seating for that lounge & chill group, comfortable seating, high tables, and at the bar, along with larger group tables around the corner. The decor definitely helps to make for some conversations as they have mug shots of everybody all around the wall. ... The lime overpowered the vanilla and orgeat, but otherwise was good. I also ordered a "No barq all bite" which was good but quite sweet. We came here for a private event and we were served a buffet style meal. Salad, rigatoni, chicken parmesan and pizza. The salad was the only decent thing to eat. The chicken parmesan was completely overcooked and dry with mushy bread crumb coating. The pizza crust was like cardboard. Aged old fashion: so smooth, strawberry mint whiskey (on Crust menu, but basil) : really refreshing, and the baker is like a whiskey sour: so yummy. Ordered the oysters, really good actually, a little awkward to eat, you only get two slices of bread so I can't imagine sharing it with more than one person. We both got the short ribs, very tender and juicy. The meat it self lacked a tiny bit of flavor but once combined with the sauce and everything, really good. It came out extremely fast. Service was good: pleasant, helpful and attentive enough. As the night got later the place got more full. Decor is fun with the mug shots everywhere plus the ostrich lol. Area and Restrooms were clean. From one of the pictures I knew where to walk to, if you're facing the restaurant look to the left side, there's white stairs,go down, open the door. You can wear whatever you want, dress up or dress down. People in jeans and sandals, others in nice attire plus wedges/heels. Expect speakeasy prices: our drinks 18 each, our meal 28 each Since it's a smaller place, low ceilings, as the night went on, music and people got louder (even a large crowd can make the noise amplify easily) so a bit harder to talk. The joys of stumbling upon a speakeasy. I am the self-appointed king of speakeasies in Phoenix (and surrounding areas) so let me present to you the best speakeasy I have been to so far in the state: The Ostrich. On a Thursday evening, I had tickets to see a performance at The Chandler Center of the Arts. After dinner, I had half an hour to spare. I came across The Ostrich on the trusty Yelp app and made my way over. Ambiance (5/5): Speakeasies have become so popular that many have sprouted up which aren't true speakeasies. They cater to Instagram culture and to pretentiousness which is exactly the opposite of the roots of speakeasies. The Ostrich is not like that. As a true speakeasy should be, there is no signage. You'll see an ostrich in the vicinity and a random stairwell. Go down the stairwell and you will see an ostrich on the door. Enter and you will discover a large speakeasy with seating at the bar, tables, and booth seating. The decor is great. You'll see pictures of ostriches accompany mugshots. An ostrich with its head in the ceiling. Funny images of ostriches. They live up the theme and they do it well. And there are historical roots. During the Prohibition era, the basement where the speakeasy is located housed live ostriches. Ostrich features were sold to Hollywood celebrities. Pretty awesome. When I attended, there was a networking event going on which made it louder than what I anticipate is the typical experience. Service (4.5/5): I didn't have a lot of time to spare and luckily the bartender approached me pretty quickly, made my craft cocktail, and closed me out. Quick and painless. Food (N/A): While they do have food, mostly appetizers, I had already had dinner previously. They also have a reverse happy hour with discounts on some of the food items as well as their classic cocktails. Drinks (4.5/5): When you think of a speakeasy, you think of elevated cocktails. The Ostrich has a good number of classic cocktails which didn't interest me much. I was looking for something more creative and unique. They have a good number of those, too. I selected one inspired by the Tarantino classic, Kill Bill. Exactly what I was hoping for. An interesting fusion of flavors with elegance. On Tuesday, they have a tiki Tuesday. I must return for that. My only complaint? Their happy hour is from 5-6. 1 hour?! Come on! A publication voted The Ostrich as the best speakeasy in the state. For good reason. read more

I love bringing guests here because they are usually surprised and wonder where I'm taking them, However, my Aunt just went with the flow in trusting my lead. Some places deserve more than five stars, and this is definitely one of them. It was our anniversary so we decided to try someplace new, and this place did not disappoint. A seedy little spot underneath the crust restaurant, you could enter either through a hidden door inside the restaurant or off the side of the building. It made the experience that much more fun. The staff dresses in speakeasy period clothing and everyone was super friendly and good at their jobs. Since we moved to Arizona we've been looking for a good place to make whiskey drinks, and have had our fair share of misses. We've gotten to the point where if we ask for a drink and they have to pull a book out it's not the place to go. We did not have this problem here. Probably some of the best drinks we've ever had, and we've had our fair share to compare. It was pretty exciting to see bone marrow on the menu, and while I should quit saying that something is the best we've ever had, I would be lying if I didn't say that this was. It was cooked to perfection and the spicy peppers on top with the grilled bread . Just Yum! We had the Lombardi pizza and again every bite was amazing. Now, when it came to dessert, this is where we get a little judgmental! :-) We ordered the butter cake, which is one of our favorite desserts but one that can also go very very bad. Again I'm gonna use the word best, or at least a close rival to a place in Washington DC. Everything about it was perfection. All of those and fair pricing, who would've thought. Fun little speakeasy under Crust, you can order your food from crust in there which I didn't know until later. The atmosphere is amazing, we spent a good 2 1/2 here and had a great time. The drinks: Ostrich Fuel (best out of 4), Blonde Hawaiian (2nd best), Stifling Dagger (3rd place), & Sun Strike (sent it back) I definitely recommend the ostrich fuel it was great we got it again! I would have never imagined myself coming here had it not been my friend's recommendation. This place is officially on my top 5 HH list. I really liked The Ostrich on my last visit, so I came back to try happy hour with a friend. They're now open on Mondays, and I think I visited on their second week of doing so. Their menu still says happy hour Tuesday-Friday 5-6pm, but it applies to Mondays as well. I was so excited to finally try their Truffle Fries that are only available during HH. The fries are thin and crunchy with just enough truffle flavor. We enjoyed it so much that we ordered a second plate! Cocktails were great. Got a Paper Plane - can't go wrong with a classic. Then I got a Bartender's Choice where the bartender asks you a few questions and makes a cocktail based on your answers. Mine was tropical, light, and delicious! This speakeasy is an absolute gem! The history behind its origins is fascinating, adding to the charm of the space. The atmosphere is inviting, with an impressive selection of spirits and craft cocktails. While I'm not a liquor drinker, I appreciated that they offered a few wine options, allowing me to sip while my partner enjoyed a WhistlePig on the rocks. We didn't try the food since we were just passing time before heading to the movie theater, but the menu comes from Crust, the restaurant upstairs. I'd love to return and explore more--there are so many intriguing details on the walls that I only caught glimpses of on my way in. Great place to get those old fashion drinks that most places don't make right. I love the Whiskey Sour. They make it with the egg whites, like it should be made. Service is awesome. If you go to the bar area when it's super busy you might have to wait a few minutes but usually the bartender will let you know that they see you and they will be headed your way shortly. I really wish I could give this place more than five stars. We've been here many many times and each experience is unique and special. The wait staff is amazing. The drinks are amazing. The food is amazing. The atmosphere is amazing. The people that choose to dine here are amazing - seriously, great crowd of people to be around. We've never had to wait when going - it's definitely the largest of the four speakeasies and will always be our favorite being the original location and the first of the speakeasies we went to. Because we love it so much, we chose to bring our immediate family for dinner following our intimate wedding ceremony two years ago in December. Again, no wait time. For a party of 12. Amazing experience. The staff was okay with us bringing in our own cake to cut, still gave us free dessert, and gave us a bottle of champagne on the house as well. I really love speakeasy's it was good vibes but the bartender was really passive aggressive. I didn't have the drink we were looking for but that's okay. But he was really rude about it and we didn't feel like he treated us as guests. He asked us why we didn't tip great and it made us very uncomfortable.
