What a hidden gem! Like seriously hidden. I would have never known the restaurant is there. Board & Batten was suggested for our foodie friend dinner by Scarlett M. Great choice! I had it on my list, but it's not in an area I usually go to. It's tucked away in commercial/ industry area around other businesses. Pretty well hidden. You would have to know its location to drive back there. Once you drive into the parking lot, you see all the trees and the white brick building. The interior and outdoor patio is a beautiful space and we opted to sit out there during some nice weather. For a Tuesday night it was surprisingly full, we had a reservation for 6:30 pm and were sat right on time. The service of everyone we interacted with was great. Our server was friendly and did a great job explaining the menu and making suggestions. We ended up splitting a few dishes- the burrata appetizer, octopus picatta piccante, scallop spaghetti, and roasted airline chicken breast with risotto. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The cocktails were also well balanced and very enjoyable. Delicious food. Great decor and ambiance - feels like you are in an upscale farmhouse with a touch of Joanna Gaines's vibe. I love the outdoor space too, with many comfortable conversation areas and warming fires. Service was excellent - nicely informative and professional with light chatter and moderate attentiveness that was neither intrusive nor ignoring us. Excellent cocktail menu too. Bartender knows what they are doing, as does the chef. We found this to be a great pre-concert dinner place when attending events at Mesa Arts Center. This is a hidden gem in the Mesa area. One of my colleagues had raved about this restaurant as it's one of her favorite places to go. Came this evening with a different colleague and his wife for a lovely dinner. The outdoor patio setting is wonderful and the perfect temperature for the night. From the ricotta cannelloni with a fried green tomato, to the BUCATINI BORGSHESE as well as the flourless chocolate cake, everything was amazing. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!! We live this place, which is probably the nicest restaurant in Mesa. There is patio seating in front like with string lights. There are fire tables surrounded by sofas for cooler weather. Inside is lovely, with a bar, tables and banqettes, and lounging area with velvet upholstered chairs. The servers here are professional and attentive, but also warm and friendly. The menu changes often, has this common with most Chef driven restaurants. I have never had anything but fantastic food here. This evening we were treated to Champagne, then ordered a BB Martini and a small bottle of Vietta Moscato d'Asti, my favorite. We started with the Rustic Tomato Braised Meatballs, served with particular and grilled bread. It was absolutely delicious. Hubby ended up ordering a sausage rigatoni which was on the specials menu. I got the Duric Pork Chop with bacon polenta abd peperonata. It was amazing!!! We were too full for dessert, but we've had dessert here before and it is amazing. The salted caramel bar and the flourless chocolate cake are to die for. This is the perfect date night spot in Mesa. We will continue to come back again and again because it is one of our absolute favorite places. read more

The only reason I'm not giving a 5 star is because the verbiage of the menu and plating is elevated meaning the price is beyond what you're getting. Matt, our server was great. The place was short staffed for a Thursday and not looking so busy. Also, it was raining... and there is limited seating inside. Also, as a resort restaurant manager in my past life, I can get along with a $20 plate of spaghetti, whatever, but the tension between employees is awkward. Not Matt, but I'm assuming the management. We are in town for a work trip and this place was nearby and we wanted to check it out. They had great menu items as well as some off menu choices. I opted for the simple salad and the soup of the day which was creamy mushroom. The soup was so creamy and so good. The simple salad was ok but maybe not 10 dollars ok. In hindsight maybe trying the pear salad would have been the better choice. Either way the service was great. The restaurant was super clean and offered indoor and outdoor seating. Great cocktail and wine selection. Definitely need to check it out if you are this way. read more

Had reservations for 2. Very smooth experience getting sat down. When you first walk up it looks like a country club. It's right next to a wedding venue so lots of green to look around at. I really love the outdoor area and wished I could have dined outside but it was cloudy today. The inside is nothing to scoff at and looks really nice inside like the inside of a barn kind of? Love how this place is tucked away with its own parking lot so no struggle there. Tried their martini which was really bright and nice. We ordered the Thai Steak Salad, the Crab Malloreddus (a pasta), and Halibut. The Thai steak salad was good, but wasn't on the level of the other things we ordered. Really nice cut of meat and the dressing was good. Reminded me of an upscale/fusion version of a beef salad you'd get at a Thai restaurant. Favorite thing I liked in this salad was they add crispy rice bits to act as like croutons. Really unique. However, the Crab Malloreddus (I've never seen or heard of this pasta) and the Halibut just wow. The crab pasta was exactly what the waitress said - imagine a thinner Mac n cheese with crab? Hate to describe it like that doesn't sound like it's doing it justice, but plenty amounts of crab in there and the sweetness blends well with their cheese choice. Pasta was savory and really unique to me. The halibut was served on top of mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a pickled pepper salad. Halibut was cooked excellently. Meaty cut of fish with a nice crust and seasoned perfectly. This dish I just really liked the balance of textures where the fish bite with the creamy mashed potatoes goes well with the soft bite of asparagus. The pickled pepper salad was so good just acidic pepper pickle taste that acts as a nice counter balance/palate cleanser. We skipped dessert, but really enjoyed this spot for a date. Service was excellent and really enjoyed the food. Felt like a good chunk of the menu was really unique, and love that it's no far away in Scottsdale or Phoenix so close drive for me in Mesa! read more

Lovely ambiance, and I truly appreciated the attentive service, it's hard to find anywhere, and they predicted our needs. The only thing I didn't care for, and it's completely subjective, was the Chip & Joanna Gaines "fake farmhouse" style and decor. It just doesn't fit in the southwest. read more

I kept hearing about Board and Batten and the raving reviews so decided to give it a try. Booking service was easy however when we arrived the waitstaff couldn't find our booking. We were patient and gave the details again. She didn't make a great first impression with her tone and facial expressions which was strange because it was in her error. Thankfully, another waitstaff came along quickly and found our reservation straight away with a beaming smile. She helped us to our seat and wished us a great first time experience. Our waiter for the night was awesome. He gave us a run down on the menu and offered us the details on most ordered/rated menu items. We got two steaks, potatoes for the side and lava chocolate cake. Everything turned out perfectly! Our favorite was the potatoes - we're still talking about them! The ambience is different inside and outside of the restaurant. A gem of an exterior location. Lush, elegant mature trees. The food is creative, the chef and kitchen staff have it going. Nicely plated, good portion size unique combinations. (We had the swordfish special from San Diego with couscous. A ceviche special appetizer large chunks of fish with mandarin segments. As well as a delicious pasta dish. The part that could be improved upon is the service. It was my first time, and I waited at the hostess desk as a somewhat long conversation happening. There was no, eye contact or even nod of my existence as the call continued. I then decided to use the restroom... give her time to finish. When I returned.. the hostess was in back corner by bar... I stood patiently at hostess stand. Still no engagement...then a waitress came by and said let's see about seating you and left. I ended up walking outside to seat myself...and then was "assisted" once I started to seat myself. It was early. It many people seated yet and I did have a reservation. ... I would definitely go back as the food and ambiance out weight the lackadaisical service, and I'm sure the manager will address this. Feeling welcome does matter. read more

I wish they were easier to communicate with for big parties. They don't call people back, they refer you to their website and there is absolutely no personal follow up. If you are trying to book a rehearsal dinner for 22 to 25 people., you should feel like the manager actually wants to communicate with you. read more

The lemon Cesar salad was really lemony and good but the bacon wrapped figs is not worth the price. 3.5/5 overall This restaurant is a little off the beaten path on the north east side of Mesa / by the airport, but worth it if you want to enjoy a relaxed, quiet dinner outside! It's got a cute modern farmhouse aesthetic and a big, open patio with string lights and heaters! The food and service were only OK, but in my opinion this was compensated by the drinks and ambiance. For food, we ordered the sweet rolls, cast iron shrimp, swordfish and pork chop. The sweet rolls were nothing to write home about, as they were just soft, salted bread rolls with essentially fruity jam on the side. I wasn't a huge fan of the combination, and probably would've just preferred butter with those rolls (but also probably wouldn't order these again for $13). The shrimp was cooked well and I liked the chimichurri on top. I did think it was a little funny that these weren't served in a cast iron dish! The swordfish and pork entrees were good, but we didn't feel that there was anything particularly distinguishing for either. Honestly, it was probably about comparable to something we might cook at home. The service was also pretty slow. We went without reservation and were told it would be about a 45 minute wait, but it ended up being an hour and a half. We waited at the bar, and even with no one else at the bar, it took a while to get our drinks. Later, we had a pretty long delay to get our entrees; they were apologetic, but it just made for a long night. I would still come back, probably for happy hour / drinks and shareables. read more

The atmosphere and setting here is beautiful. We sat on the patio and had a lovely weekend brunch. The bacon wrapped dates were delicious, but were weird paired with a pretzel stick, mozzarella and some kind of fruit compote. I would rather lose all the random add-ons and just get more than 2 bacon wrapped dates. I opted for the crispy chicken sandwich and it was huge and tasty. The chicken was crispy but also moist and it had wonderful flavor with just a little kick. The salad was also a nice refreshing side to complement the sandwich. read more

Was here for an official event, was able to reserve a large table. I ordered the swordfish entree, the fish by itself was quite good, well cooked and flavorful. But the melted tomato, was different from what I imagined it to be. We ordered the bacon wrapped dates and the daily crudo for the table. I felt both were quite unique and I really liked both of them, definitely recommend trying both these appetizers. Desserts were also a must try, I wish the salted caramel bar also came with ice cream and it would compliment it really well according to me. The warm date was really good as well. The server was really good. He was really organized and provided us with great recommendations. They had both indoor and outdoor seating. Went on a Saturday night for dinner. Our waiter was so gracious and extremely helpful in explaining the menu options and specials. 2 of the 3 of us went with one of his suggestions on the steak. The other person went with the salmon. The steak was prepared exactly how I ordered it. It was delicious. He recommended the potatoes as a side and those were a little too salty for any of our likings. The place is very cute aesthetically. Very warm and inviting. The best part was actually when the bill arrived. It was presented in a book. Inside the book past guests have made little dedications in it. Such a cute idea!
