She listened to what we were looking for, and made a couple menu suggestions we wouldn't have chosen ourselves and they were delicious! The swordfish with paella dish is to die for! Eva literally made our evening with her cheerful interactions, and all the staff - from the hostesses, to the guac guy Aidan, to the manager who came to our table to check in. Food - 4.5* Service - 2.5* We saw the 3.5* review overall and considered canceling our reservation but we'd been wanting to try this spot for many years since the Old Town spot was near our old place. We kept the reservation and went and we prefaced it with our waiter. That may or may not have helped the food quality because we were pleasantly surprised by the flavors and presentation of the food but also came out hot. What we ordered: Corona Jidori Chicken Thighs - loved this because of how well the chicken was cooked and the "sauce" it came on Roasted Corn Gorditas - lots of flavor and texture on these 5 mini gorditas. The unique cream sauce was great Roasted Butternut Squash Tacos - it was good, could've been cooked a little more for softness Tecate Battered Mahi Mahi Tacos - very good! Cooked perfectly with the right amount of kick and flavor (all tacos come with 3) We also ordered a mezcal margarita and a Coke bottle. Also, got the pumpkin bread pudding dessert for our anniversary dinner which was recommended by our waiter, which was very good! Warm with a scoop of ice cream. The issues with service wasn't just on the waiter but it was overall the staff including the kitchen. They filled our water after appetizers arrived They brought out the grilled street corn instead of the corn gorditas. Took a bit to get the correct item out. Asked for paper napkins and that took a while to come out (mainly for the drinks as a coaster) Asked for a cup of ice when we ordered the Coke bottle and they didn't bring it out until we reminded them. They asked about allergies up front but the butternut squash tacos still came with avocado slices on each. We didn't mention no avocado when we ordered because it doesn't say it's on there. Took it off and ate it because we didn't want to wait for food again. Manager came and comped the butternut squash tacos for their mistake and apologized for that mistake. Our waiter did a good job explaining the food items and helped us decide the better option. The ambiance of the space is really nice. They did a really nice job redoing this spot and making it larger from the previous Belly restaurant. Would we go back? Maybe.. but we have many others to try before making our way back. So we got the tableside guacamole with chips and salsa, the shareable pork tacos, and a few other little things. The service was so-so. Granted, they had only been open for a couple of months, but that's really no excuse. Also, the place wasn't even that packed, so I'm still befuddled as to what happened. Where should I start? Oh yeah--so the water was tap and tasted disgusting, forcing us to buy sparkling or still water. In this type of establishment, that's a huge no-no. The tableside guacamole is better made at home. It was lacking flavor big time, which is difficult to even comprehend because guacamole is such an easy thing to do--and to do right. We ordered a few other things off the menu, all of which were lacking. We literally had to ask for a bottle of salt for everything that we ate. Which brings me to my next major gripe: the shareable pork tacos. These things straight up sucked. If they're famous for that, then whoever made such outlandish claims in the first place doesn't know good food. For context, I've been to multiple Michelin-star restaurants, my brother is a chef, and I also cook, so I'm somewhat qualified to make decent assessments. One of the managers on duty saw that we were twiddling our thumbs for like 20 minutes, in need of more tortillas. She asked, "Would you guys like some more tortillas?" We said, "Sure!" So literally 25 minutes later, the tortillas came out on a little salt rock--apparently being flown in directly from Mexico that evening, because that's about how long they took to hit our table. Meanwhile, the food was cold. I'm talking COLD cold. By the way, there was no mention of those tortillas being an extra charge, but you must have them, so it's a catch-22. Also, they claimed that they're hand-pressed, which may be the case, but yet again, something that could be made at home and taste way better. The drinks, I will say, were the highlight of the evening. But let's all be honest here: you shouldn't be relying on your drinks to carry the meal, especially at these prices. This was supposed to be one of two anniversary back-to-back dinners--Friday and Saturday--the other being a couple doors down at Buck and Rider. This place should take some serious notes from Buck and Rider on how to make an anniversary couple feel welcomed. The only time our anniversary was even mentioned was when we checked in. In comparison, Buck and Rider gave us desserts as well as a special message on the large board in the front. And boy, what a difference in the quality of food and hospitality. I hate to slam this place, and realistically, I could pick it apart more, but there's no use. They really need to do better. read more

First impressions matter, and The Mission in Gilbert started us off right. We called while stuck in traffic and Julia answered. She was kind, calm, and genuinely understanding. She gave us about a 15 minute grace period on our reservation and still made sure we were seated at a great table when we arrived. That kind of hospitality sets the tone. My husband and I have been to the Scottsdale location, so we were excited to see this concept in Gilbert. It is a smaller space, cute. Joshua was our server and he was excellent. Friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. His recommendations were spot on and he made the whole experience feel enjoyable. Definitely one of those servers you hope to get again. We started with the tableside Mission guacamole. Jace prepared it and followed our request for extra spice perfectly. He was engaging, asked about our night, and added a fun, personal touch to the table. When we found out he is only 16, so sweet to see young hardworking people. We had seen some mixed reviews before coming, but as a former restaurant owner, I think it is important to give new locations time to find their rhythm. Our experience was smooth, well-paced, and genuinely enjoyable. Joshua recommended the Arroz Chaufa with Peruvian duck fried rice, and it absolutely delivered. Great depth of flavor, balanced, and a generous portion so we took some home. We also ordered the Duck Carnitas Empanada with orange habanero glaze and queso Oaxaca. It was rich and flavorful, but we were already starting to get full since we like to order a variety and share. Like I said, we took some home. Lol. For drinks, I had the Mission Margarita and my husband had the Primarita. Both were well balanced. The agave and tequila selection here is worth noting. We tried the Arette Gran Clase from the extra añejo list, and it was smooth, clean, and perfect for sipping. For our main, we shared the 18 oz bone-in ribeye. Presentation was beautiful. It comes with handmade corn tortillas, chimichurri, sherry glaze, and roasted garlic crema. The chimichurri stood out the most for me, fresh and bright, and everything paired really well without competing. We still ended up ordering dessert and took it home for the kids. The espresso churros with cinnamon, brown sugar, and Ibarra chocolate milkshake were sweet and satisfying. The milkshake is thick, rich, and definitely something to share. The churros are sweet, if you are into the sweet flavors. Overall, this place is fun and energetic. It does get loud, but that is part of the vibe, and we liked it. My husband and I decided to finally try out this place since they opened a location in Gilbert! We had a reservation so we only had to wait a few minutes before being seated. I will say the interior of the restaurant is beautiful and it's definitely a vibe. The music is played a little louder here in my opinion and since this place is quite small, the tables are pretty close together. The skirt steak tacos were a hit and were so good!! First time in this relatively new spot off Ray Rd. Worthy addition to the neighborhood. VERY crowded for a Thursday night ... a good sign. Don't go without a reservation at this point!! I'm impressed by how well the restaurant seems to be running so early in its life. Well organized front desk, very accommodating young ladies who found a great table for me and my service dog. And then managed the table nearest us to make sure my service companion was not bothered. Menu has some interesting items on it. All on one page, refreshingly simple, but complete. We tried the Mission Guacamole and the Duck Empanadas. The former was great, made tableside by an engaging young man. Would recommend to go "hot" as we did medium and it could have used the extra heat, even though it was REALLY GOOD. We also tried the Duck Empanadas. I found them just "ok", rather bland and 2 of the three on the plate were over fried. Would not recommend. Craft cocktails a strength. We tried the Mission Sour and the Saturday Morning Cartoons. Both were excellent. For entrees, we went with the Linz Reserve Filet and the Tecate Skirtsteak. Very reasonable portion sizes, not too much food. Cook on the steaks was perfectly what we requested. Server was attentive, but not bothersome. Staff kept our water glasses filled. Took a bit of time to get our initial cocktails. I had view of bartenders and they seemed stressed and undermanned. For dessert, we tried the pumpkin bread pudding. Also, pretty nice. All in $250 pre-tax for 2, so to get the full Monty of the experience it's gonna cost you. I've been really enjoying frequenting The Mission in Gilbert. Staff are personable and friendly. They aim for attention to detail and it shows in the way food and service is displayed. The table guacamole is delicious. I truly love this shared table dish. I also always get the steak skirt tacos. $25 for three- it's definitely on the expensive side but the flavor is there! This place is fun! I really liked the prickly pear margs but I do not recommend the add on topper. It's Smokey and doesn't go with the pear well. I had the Mahi mahi tacos. The tortillas were fantastic but the fish was breaded and I was disappointed. The guacamole is fantastic! The skirt steak tacos were good. My husband ordered the Cubano torta which was one of the best things I have ever tasted. Highly recommend!!! We finished with the chocolate dessert and it was amazing! The place is pretty pricy. We had great service, started with the pork belly lettuce wraps or whatever they're called and they were delicious! They don't have draft beer which is weird, and they also don't have draft soda also weird. Our entree was the pork tacos for two, supposedly marinated and pineapple and habanero? It was like a pork loin piece with a ton of barbecue sauce. I'm not a big fan of barbecue sauce, and the pork wasn't really shreddable? We finally checked out The Mission, a brand new spot we've been waiting months to open, and it did not disappoint. The space is absolutely beautiful, super aesthetic, and instantly gives elevated neighborhood hotspot vibes. We started with the tableside guacamole, which was such a fun experience. You choose the texture, spice level, and mix-ins, and it's made fresh right in front of you. We also ordered the crispy pork with a cola lime glaze ( basically pork belly served in a lettuce wrap) which was hands down the standout and my favorite bite of the meal. The roasted pork shoulder tacos and Tecate skirt steak tacos were also flavorful and done really well. For drinks, we had the Mission Sour and Lazy Maize, both mezcal based. The Mission Sour was the winner, so smooth and easy to drink. We were too full for dessert, but we're already planning a return just for drinks and that pork belly. Service was excellent. Jenna was incredibly helpful and walked us through the entire menu, and Camia was so sweet during the tableside guacamole experience. Overall, great food, great service, and great vibes. So excited to have The Mission in Gilbert! By sheer luck, we were able to snag a 7pm reservation on the Friday night of their soft opening. Last minute date night, hooray! It was BUSY. The place was packed and the vibes were high. The restaurant is beautiful; I had a hard time trying to picture how it used to look before (it used to be Belly). They really knocked it out of the park with the design. The service was great. When attending a soft opening, I always try to come with a little grace and patience. Our waitress was a seasoned pro -- very attentive, kind, engaging, and well-versed on the menu. The food was a bit slow to come out, but that was completely understandable given the soft opening. Overall, it was a very positive experience. Cocktails and food were both incredible. The margaritas tasted super fresh, and the chips and salsa were SO delicious. For our meal, we ordered the tableside guacamole (which you can customize to your liking), the Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian Duck Fried Rice), and the Roasted Pork Shoulder Tacos. If you're a mezcal lover, go for the The Mission Sour, the mezcal comes through beautifully while still getting the classic sour taste. Also, the La Familia is delicious and unique, don't skip on it either! We got the Duck Confit Empanadas, as recommended by our wonderful waiter Shawn. It was well packed inside at the time we walked in between 12:30-1 on Sunday, made reservations but was still an hour wait, however (I believe it was a manager) by the hostess stand stopped us from leaving to walk around the shopping center and offered a bar seating area, tried that but the couple sitting near the two open seats didn't offer to scoot over to make room for us to sit down, then the manager offered a private table that was reserved for a group that never arrived, which was super sweet of her to do, thank you SO much, truly appreciate the hospitality and the kindness during our whole visit! Ordered drinks and the table side guacamole, drinks came quickly but took forever for the guacamole to show up. They prepare to your taste but it's $18!! My husband ordered the skewered shrimp starter....3 shrimp for $20. If you want to add shrimp to your salad it's $16 for 2 shrimp. I ordered the battered mahi mahi tacos. Came in a few weeks ago. I'm a huge fan and have been dining at the Scottsdale OG spot for yearssssss. Super excited that there is a location 15 minutes from my house. I went in with a couple of friends just to have some margaritas. We decided to order the guac chips and salsa. Hayden was the one to come over and make our guacamole, he was super friendly, asked us multiple questions about how we would like it seasoned and flavored. Our server was very friendly as well. We had a reservation and were told to wait even though there were numerous open tables. Walking to our table to the right of the hostess stand I noticed the floors were dirty like they needed to be mopped. Our server was very friendly and helpful with the menu. Went on a Friday Night with reservations which was a good idea. Very busy and so loud was hard to have a conservation. Started with the Mission margarita with Grand Marnier float. The margarita didn't have salt on the glass nor were we asked and surprised it'd be served without salt or without being asked. I'm a little doubtful that the Grand Marnier was really added. Table side guacamole was the highlight. We had the Caesar salad, which was very good and an awesome dressing and also the steak tacos. The steak tacos were smaller than street tacos, but the pieces of meat were very good but not much more than a tortilla with some tender steak on them. Service is very spotty. Doubt they feed 2 people...wasn't going to find out for that prices but I would have bought them for $10 per street taco for myself because no one wanted to share. Waitress carries off 3 drinks from the table for refills...how do you think that will turn out in the return??? Guess we are all swapping spit now. But if you see how the waitress handles the pitcher...touching the lip of the glass...watching the straw bouncing all over the lip of the pitcher...no wonder I am sick as hell 3 days after eating at this place. Our service sucked. Only one waitress to blame for that. I am sure the rest of the servers are not all bad. But won't be back to find out. $12 sides? Beans and rice are used to feed the hungry in 3rd world countries. Why are we charging Patrons $12. On because we can "share" such a large portion? Nope!!! Honestly was not impressed at all by this place. I'll be honest I hadn't looked at the menu or reviews prior to going. Walking out after my meal I doubt I'll go back; between the quality of the food, the interaction with the staff and what you get what you pay for really makes me wonder if their price point just reflects where the restaurant is vs the quality of said food. I really don't eat a lot. So my mother in law and I shared their Pork shoulder tacos and some chips and salsa to start. ( The amount was enough to feed 6 generous tacos. ) How it was delivered when explained enough to share it was disappointing. They didn't bring a spoon to dish out salsa nor silverware for dishing out the cilantro cotija and onions for toppings. Their tortillas served on a salt block while may look different and served for shock presentation was unnecessary and the tortillas were cold and undercooked. Also the waiter tried his best to imply the meat was super tender after cooking for 12 hours was entirely the opposite. I cook a lot, I cook a lot of Mexican food and pork shoulder. This meat was tough and dry and was clearly not cooked low and long enough. It would not shred with 2 forks. Barely would shred with a knife and fork. Flavor was decent. Their sauce reminded me of a sweet barbacoa/cafe Rio etc. Anyways. Loved the paintings on the wall and the seating was comfortable. We got the pork shoulder meal for 2. Saying it's for 2 is sure pushing it. We left HUNGRY. More than half of it was fat also. I would have to say the corn tortillas were amazing. The margaritas were good but very pricey for about half a cup, mostly ice. You could find better pretty much anywhere. I wouldn't stress if you can't get a reservation here. Ordered drinks from the bar that took a while to get out. Appetizers were amazing and came out in a timely manner. Entree took a very long time to come out. Manager was on top of it though and apologized without us calling him to the table. The entrees were phenomenal having no complaints. All four of our entrées were just perfect . I've been to The Mission in Gilbert three times now, and while every visit has been great, this most recent dinner was by far my favorite. It feels like the staff has hit their stride and the whole place is dialed. To start, our server was attentive and knowledgeable, but the highlight of the night was getting a chance to run into Chef Matt Carter. He was kind enough to chat with us and even shared some of the secrets behind his famous Pork Shoulder tacos. Hearing how they cross-braise it with a habanero-pineapple glaze and slow-cook it made the meal even more special. As for the food, you can't go wrong, but a few standouts for us were: The Tableside Guacamole: A total must. Fresh, perfectly seasoned, and always a great way to start. Tecate Battered Mahi Mahi Tacos: crispy and light. The Mission Sour: If you're looking for a drink, this is it. The pineapple-infused mezcal gives it such a unique, smoky finish. I also want to give a shout-out to their lunch service. My previous two visits were for lunch, and it's such a great reprieve from the workday. The first time we (wife and I) tried visiting there was plenty of open tables (more than half the restaurant was empty) yet we were told they couldn't accommodate us because we didn't have a reservation. So today we gave them another shot and we made reservations. Pros: the water was good and so was the guacamole. Tried the carnitas taquitos, which are more miniature than small. My wife ordered the gorditas which were ok. Food is mediocre at best. Most of the reviews that we read are from people who drink and we don't drink. So we didn't have anything that would alter our senses. Our server disappeared for long periods of time. Unfortunately, we won't be going back. read more

So happy to have The Mission in Gilbert. Always been one of my favorite restaurants. Location is awesome, staff is great and the restaurant layout is solid. Have probably had 75% of the menu over the years and it's all fantastic. Pork shoulder Tacos are my #1 go-to. read more
