Visited Sotol Modern Cocktail Kitchen while in Gilbert. The atmosphere was modern and open, and the service started off a bit off-putting, though it improved slightly as the visit went on. I've been wanting to check this place out for a while. Right from the start, the elevator was out of order, which wasn't ideal. When we got inside, the place was mostly empty -- only a couple of other guests -- yet we were told to sit anywhere except along a section of tables by the wall. I pointed out a table at the far end, well away from the entrance, but was directed instead to what felt like the least desirable table, with the reasoning being they might need the space for a large party. After a bit of back-and-forth, they eventually let us sit where we preferred, but it made for a poor first impression -- especially considering the restaurant never filled up. Tried a few cocktails -- they were well made and enjoyable, definitely the highlight of the visit. Overall, good drinks but the initial experience left a sour note -- may or may not return. Saluti.

Sotol is a must visit in Downtown Gilbert! It offers one of the only rooftop views throughout the town, and their food and drinks are both delicious! Service has bee friendly and prompt every time I've visited, and it's always got a good crowd (but not overcrowded) on weekends during happy hour times. On the most recent visit I had a smoke old fashioned for a drink, which is one of my favorites. For food, we started with their queso fundido. This is an extremely friendly portion, very cheesy, and absolutely delicious! For our main meals, we had the Copper Star Burger and Old Town Steak Gorgonzola. While both were delicious, I favored the burger since the steak on the Steak Gorgonzola was a bit overcooked. Highly recommend this place for a solid drink, food, and all around enjoyable happy hour!

Incredible!! I celebrated a recent birthday here, after going to spring training for the Seattle Mariners. This was a fabulous end to a beautiful day. We started with cocktails just as the sun was going down. The view is amazing, and when the sky darkens, the water tower is lit and it's pretty magical. The restaurant has tables, but also a counter lining the patio, a good spot for a couple to unwind and get sunset vibes. Cocktails were visually stunning and quite a flavor combination. They were beautiful just to take in. Our server was friendly and made recommendations for the table. I opted for the Steak Gorgonzola. It was so creamy, so flavorful , I'd forgotten how much I love gorgonzola. Very tender steak, great flavors in each bite. Others at the table tried the Gilbert Ranch Steak, very tasty, tender and great chimichurri accompaniment. As it was my birthday, we got a churros served with sparklers. Very festive. Great way to end the meal!!! Thank you Sotol! It was a great experience.

This was a conflicting dinner experience- for some reasons it was amazing and for some reasons it was... subpar. The vibe was so nice watching the sunset and drinking a cocktail. The service was super slow being that it was a busy night with only one bartender for happy hour. The ceviche had great flavor but the shrimps were whole leading to a difficult eating experience and they were slightly under done. The sol de Arizona drink was good, but pretty light on the alcohol, not spicy at all despite the "habanero" in it. The steak Gorgonzola was absolutely delicious. PERFECTLY cooked steak. Delicious sauce (not too funky from the Gorgonzola). Perfect potato pancake. I would go back, but they need more servers/ bartenders for better service!

Went here with a group for a birthday dinner loved food, cocktails and view. However, the place is severely under staffed. There was one waitress and one bartender for the entire restaurant. Honestly, I felt bad for both of them as they were working so hard but just could not keep up with all of the customers in the restaurant. This made getting a second drink very difficult and the wait was just too long to be able to enjoy. Additionally, this place is advertised as 18 and up establishment. Because of this we were unable to invite someone to join us for dinner. However, I was shocked to see two young children at the restaurant at two different tables. I found this very disappointing.

The view at sunset is amazing,

Great place for a date, spectacular sunset views, chill vibe with music just loud enough to ensure you only hear yourselves and not the other patrons. The best drink EVER is the purple one, made with Sotol which is a tequila-adjacent liquor, and I would drink That damn thing every day, legit. Ingredients in it are: sotol | butterfly pea | coconut rum | pineapple | lime | orgeat *Flavor Profile: "refreshing and bright, smokey, slightly grassy, vegetal, and tropical notes". It was SPECTACULAR. Steve had the Ol' Salty Beach, the blue one, which was: tequila | curacao | lime | agave | house-made sea salt, lime foam *Flavor Profile: "cadillac style margarita with the delicious smooth taste of a lime sea foam in every sip". Just delicious. That delightful sea salt foam was a revelation. We ordered the queso fundidio and it was good- but heavy. Great flavor between chorizo, pineapple, cheese, and herbs. I would not order this me t time- not because it isn't good, it is..but because it's too much with a dinner. Alone, this is a perfect happy hour bite. We also each had tacos for dinner. The servings were huge, two tacos with incredible, fresh ingredients on top of each one. I got the shrimp which had a wonderful spicy mayonnaise on it and Steve got the steak which was incredible and was laced with lots of fresh, grilled jalapeños. Their guac was good too- and they served micro green cilantro on top of the tacos, which was incredibly fresh and bright. Really really loved the food here. Service was amazing, attentive, but not overbearing, and our server was sweet and friendly. Would totally go here again. Love that it's a rooftop bar so no kids and it was just the chill adult vibe we were looking for to chase away the Sunday Scaries!

I attended a private holiday party at Sotol Rooftop bar in Gilbert. This was my first visit. After passing by the front of the building and seeing all the stairs up to the entrance, I was thrilled and VERY relieved there is an accessible elevator around back! This made me so happy, especially after my recent knee surgery. The views were incredible and you can see all of downtown Gilbert! The food and service were amazing and I will definitely be back to try out their HH and weekend brunch!

I had been wanting to try this place for quite a while. I read about the daunting stairs to get to this 3rd floor rooftop bar/restaurant. Never fear--there is an elevator when you go in through the back door from the parking lot behind the building. This place is very small--maybe two or three tables on the inside, and bar that is half indoors and half outdoors. There is not a lot of decor. There is a mural on one wall, but that's about it. Of course, the real thing to look at is the excellent view of downtown Gilbert. I will say that the music here is loud - - way too loud. I left there with my throat feeling a little rough after having to talk so loudly just to have a conversation. We ordered cocktails, and they were both fantastic! They were strong, so you definitely get your money's worth in alcohol. The food was just as good. Delicious!! We got: *Sotol So Good (cocktail) *Jumping Cholla (cocktail) *Rooftop Pepita Hummus *Filet is Mignon Steak Tacos Neither of us was terribly hungry, so we split the hummus and tacos. The servings were very large. Omg that hummus was amazing! I could have had just the hummus for my meal and I wish I had more room in my belly to eat because it was so good. The tacos were completely piled with ingredients and, again, absolutely fantastic! I will say the food and cocktails were an A+!!!! Love, love, love! .

Such a cute bar with a nice view, delicious drinks, good food, and nice servers. I ordered the sunset tini which was super tasty and the copper state burger which was unique and yummy. All of the toppings went well together and I really liked the balsamic reduction. In the winter they have heat lamps on to keep you warm, and during the summer they have misters which is nice! The only downside would be the the stairs you have to take to get to the top and the tree that blocks the view of part of the patio. However, I will definitely be coming back!

I can't say enough about the incredible service we had at Sotol, all the suggestions the server made were all great!! We ordered so much and enjoyed all of it! The cocktails are fun & delicious and the appetizers and entrees are so yummy, I wish I'd had room for more! Going to enjoy our leftovers for sure. I love the vibe & atmosphere of the rooftop bar overlooking downtown Gilbert, and the hustle bustle of the evening crowd! The bartender is amazing as well!

Dirty bar mat on the counter in front of paying customers.
    Dave D.

The drink was "fine", the service was deplorable. If you don't want to be at work, please do yourself and your patrons a favor and stay home. Oh, and the stinky dirty bar mat on the counter placed 2 feet from my wife was the cherry on top. We will not be back.

Rooftop vibes are always good and hard to come by in the East Valley. Good drinks atop DT Gilbert.

    Mish L.

I can't rate the place fairly because I couldn't even get to it. It's not accessible for people with disabilities. I have knees issues and cannot climb stairs and as far as our group could see, the stairs were the only entrance. We ended up having to go elsewhere.

The queso was rich without being too heavy, and the mustard added a nice contrast. For my meal, I had the Caesar salad topped with a bistro steak cooked a perfect medium rare. The romaine was crisp, the garlic-anchovy dressing bold, and the garlic croutons and parmesan tied everything together. The steak was tender, flavorful, and elevated the salad. At the table, we also ordered the cheesesteak with Angus beef, roasted peppers and onions, Havarti cheese, and garlic aioli served on a baguette, with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was hearty and satisfying, and the fries were really good The wagyu burger was another standout--topped bacon, Gruyère and smoky blue cheese, caramelized onions, tomato jam, and garlic aioli on a pub bun. The beef and bacon were fabulous and the fries cooked to perfection Jake, our server, was terrific--attentive, friendly, and helped make the whole experience even better. We finished with the butterscotch bread pudding topped with vanilla gelato and caramel sauce, which was the perfect ending--warm, comforting, and just the right amount of sweetness Overall, a great patio dining experience with flavorful dishes, excellent service, and plenty of variety.

There are some walls which I thought had exposed brick, but later noticed were wall boards. Either way, I love the look. We were seated right away and the nicest server came over. He really seems to love the restaurant and love the food, which is always a plus in my book. The boys each got a beer, and I got the Italian margarita. It was a sweet drink that kind of tasted like an Amaretto Sour, which makes sense since there's Amaretto in it. I liked it. They brought gigantic rolls with butter to the table. I really liked it because most places serve sourdough bread, and I don't really like sourdough bread. These large white rolls were yummy. I wasn't very hungry so I just ordered two meatballs, but I asked if I could have the meat sauce instead of the marinara that it usually comes with. Our server said there would be no problem with that, and there wasn't. Hubby got the spaghetti and meatballs, and son got eggplant parmesan. All of it was delicious and I give kudos for a really yummy meat sauce. For me, the meat sauce can make or break an Italian restaurant. They seem to do a pretty brisk take out business, and there were quite a few people by the time we left. I would love to come back and try the pizza, because pizzas that we saw coming out looked fantastic.

Always a lot of people there so it makes you want to be there. Restaurant wise they have really basic offerings. Places you can find in Mesa, and Tempe, and Scottsdale. Now.... What truly makes Downtown Gilbert special are the small shops that are hidden away from the "main strip". One of those places is Clever Koi. Hidden in the Parking lot space behind Shaq's Chicken spot is a small strip of shops. A book store, smoothie place, and my favorite Clever Koi. Our family has very different tastes when we move from one member to the next. So finding places that we all like gets tricky. Clever Koi makes that easy because we honestly have yet to run into something we don't like. Let's start with our favorite starter. The steamed buns (giggity). The pork belly is hands down phenomenal. An amazing bite that literally makes you want more and more. The lazy fries are just that, again pork belly is included, but that garlic aioli is what drives this dish. The tai salad is obviously classic. The short rib dumplings literally make you close your eyes and just say "Mmmmmm". My middle child is the hardest pallet to please at any restaurant as he only eats certain things, but the Chicken Katsu sandwich here is his second favorite chicken sandwich in all this world. The first time he ate it he spent the whole ride home raving about it. Mind you, we live in San Tan, so not a short ride. The shaking beef is always good. It has this firey kick that brings the heat upfront but does not linger. You cannot forget about the fried rice here. Rice is one of my weaknesses in life second only to pizza. Fried rice ranks right up there with my top favorite ways to eat rice and this ranks right up there with my favorite fried rice places. The main reason we come here is because of the noodles. Ramen, ramen, ramen. When you think of Ramen, I assure you this is what you are thinking of. The broth is oh so savory and reigns in the fresh veggies and proteins to meld them with the noodles for a flavor punch each time you have a mouthful. They have great drinks here as well, or so I've been told by the other adults I come here with. I always just get a sake and Sapporo so... LOL The service is always good here and we somehow always manage to miss the lunch or dinner rush which is awesome. All in all... this is by far my favorite dining spot in downtown Gilbert. Great food, great drinks, great service, great atmosphere, in the middle of a great little square. A must eat for me.

The crunchiness from the cold greens, warm Brussels Sprouts, soft & sweet Caramelized Onions & Sweet Potatoes, plus the creaminess of the Avocados was such a great medley! I think I need to replicate this at home! Very creative & healthy! My cousin & friend both got burgers, one topped with mushrooms & one with a lettuce wrap sub, Zucchini & Sweet Potato Fries. The seating is very comfortable with the cushioned seats & booths & the restaurant is very bright & airy with lots of windows & high ceilings. If you have to use the restroom, it's located outside & will give you a passcode. Highly recommend this place!

My friends and I had a reservation for Sunday morning but it didn't seem super busy when I arrived. Ollie was our waiter. I ordered the Crème Floret Latte drink which was good, the lavender on top was a nice touch. One of my friends ordered the Grand Torino and it was pretty. Despite it not being very busy, the drinks took a while to come out. I guess there was an issue with the espresso machine? For food I tried the Maeva BEC which was delicious! I would recommend that. Overall a good experience.

It was not too busy - most were sitting on the patio enjoying the nice weather or in line at the coffee counter. I got a table for two right by a window. The interior looks modern chic, and has many windows so a lot of natural light was shining through. A server got my drink order shortly after being seated, then my friend arrived, but the server had disappeared for a while. It wasn't super busy, so I'm not sure what the hold-up was. I got the Matcha Strawberry off of their Signature Drinks menu, which tasted fresh and delicious. My friend started with a slice of Banana Choc Espresso Loaf - I tried a bite and it was dense with good flavor, especially the Valrhona chocolate. For brunch I got the Maeva "BEC" (bacon, egg, & cheese sandwich), and my friend got the Treg's Breakfast (eggs, bacon, and sourdough). The shape of the egg in my sandwich was like a square block and unexpected, but it still tasted good. The egg, cheese, pickled peppers, and chili mayo paired nicely together with the milk bun. My friend enjoyed her food as well. I would come back and try some other menu items and dinner.

Our server was incredibly patient and took the time to explain everything in detail, which really put my husband (who has celiac) at ease. Almost the entire menu can be made gluten-free--only two items couldn't--which is such a huge plus. I had the Bravocado toast with a side of the "bacon but different," and my husband ordered the Spuds Bowl along with the cinnamon bacon pancake--everything was SO good. Great food, great service, and a super accommodating experience. We'll definitely be back!

Sadly, we've noticed a decline and lack of quality control at the Gilbert location. We went on Memorial Day for an afternoon breakfast. We started by ordering Diet Coke. We were told they had run out. My husband ordered a breakfast burrito and tried to add ranchero sauce-they pulled it from the menu. It was one of our favorites, so that was a bummer. While waiting I noticed a couple dead flies on the windowsill, and this seems to be a pervasive issue. I have noticed it the last several visits. Our table was filthy, including sticky syrup all over. When my french toast came and I unrolled my silverware there was something green stuck on there and consequently also in my napkin. I don't like giving a place I love a review like this, but it's been like this the last few visits. It's getting harder to overlook. My hope is that someone will increase the quality control at the Gilbert location and give it the tlc it needs and deserves.
