It was hot, to no fault of the place, but I had a bit of swamp *** by the end of the meal. Drinks were designer. Which is fun, but you dont always truly know what youre getting. My drink said it was smoky and it indeed had a smoky taste to it. Different. They so have beer too, but it is not the standard Coors or Bud Light. As for food, lots going into presentation. Lots of dishes coming out in a smoky bell jar. I got the NY steak, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. Potatoes and asparagus was terrific. For the steak, it was not bad but admittedly im not into cuts that have large fat caps. The cook and the flavoring were fine but nothing mind blowing, especially compared to the potatoes and asparagus. Service was friendly. Served from bar. We visited Sotol on a Saturday night around 6:30, so I was shocked when we were sat right away! We each ordered a drink (I got a margarita... it was pretty good - pricey drinks at $15-$20 each). On a Saturday night after grabbing some ice cream at Topo, we stopped by Sotol Modern Cocktail Kitchen for a nightcap. Located in downtown Gilbert, Sotol is a rooftop bar and restaurant. I love a good rooftop and the weather was perfect. While they don't have a parking lot, free parking is available on the street and in the various surface lots and garages in the area. Ambiance (4.5/5): It's tough to beat a rooftop. Here you'll have nice views of downtown Gilbert, including the historic Gilbert water tower (which lights up at night). It's not a huge restaurant/bar, probably 50 seats or so. A good number of tables and then 15 seats or so at the bar. We sat at the bar. There's a pretty nice mural on one end too. Service (4/5): A little slow to start out with and to close out, but overall, friendly. We found one of the last four remaining seats at the bar. If not for that, there would have been a wait. One drink and then we made our way. Overall, about average. Food (N/A): I was on a liquid diet for this visit but they do have a full menu. Drinks (4/5): Interesting craft cocktail list. The first one on the list is a Sotol cocktail. If you've never had Sotol, it's a Mexican spirit. Not tequila and not mezcal, but somewhat similar to mezcal and it does have a bit of a smoky flavor. The Sotol So Good has sotol, butterfly pea, coconut rum, pineapple, lime, and orgeat. It's purple so it makes an impression. It packs a punch too. Most of the food and drinks were actually really good, but unfortunately, everything else fell short. We started by asking for a high chair, and the host/server responded, "This isn't really a kid establishment." I asked if we should leave if children weren't allowed, and she said kids were fine until 9 p.m. She also explained that they don't have high chairs or booster seats and asked if a booth would work instead. Since it wasn't even 7 p.m., we figured we were fine. It was a Sunday night and the restaurant appeared fairly empty, with only a few other tables occupied- including one with a baby. We had also looked at the menu online beforehand and saw that they offered a kids menu. Service was slow despite the restaurant not being busy. 4 out of 5 drinks, including both sodas and cocktails, came out after our appetizers. When we finally ordered dinner, one of the dishes was steak tacos. We specifically asked whether the steak could be cooked medium, and our server said yes. When the tacos came out, the steak was well done. When we mentioned it, the server told us that you can't specify the temperature for the steak in the tacos. That's fine, but if that's the restaurant's policy, the appropriate response when a customer asks is to explain that, not agree to medium and then bring out well-done steak. Then things really went downhill. Three people came into the bar who clearly knew the bartender and server and appeared to already have been drinking. Within a couple of minutes, the music changed from relatively normal alternative music to extremely vulgar, unedited rap. We were seated directly underneath a speaker with a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old. Nicki Minaj came on with a song containing the N-word, P-word, and numerous other explicit lyrics. I immediately got up and asked our server to change the music, specifically mentioning the explicit language and the fact that it wasn't even 7:30 p.m. and we had been told children were allowed until 9. The server yelled across the restaurant to the people at the bar to change the music. They changed the song to Drake, proceeded to talk negatively about us for several minutes, and then put unedited explicit rap back on. At that point, I simply got up and left with my kids. I didn't say anything or cause a scene; I left the rest of my party to pay for the meal. Apparently, that upset the people at the bar, because they continued talking about us after I left. My husband eventually stood up and addressed it. According to him, the man immediately tried to backtrack and say everything was fine while continuing to speak disrespectfully about us along with the two other women with him. What was most disappointing was the lack of management intervention. Customers who appeared to know the staff were allowed to dictate the atmosphere of the restaurant, while a paying family with young children was treated as though we were the problem for asking not to have explicit music played directly over our table. The food was genuinely good, which makes the experience even more disappointing. Unfortunately, good food doesn't make up for poor service and an uncomfortable, disrespectful experience. read more

Sotol is a must visit in Downtown Gilbert! It offers one of the only rooftop views throughout the town, and their food and drinks are both delicious! Service has bee friendly and prompt every time I've visited, and it's always got a good crowd (but not overcrowded) on weekends during happy hour times. On the most recent visit I had a smoke old fashioned for a drink, which is one of my favorites. For food, we started with their queso fundido. This is an extremely friendly portion, very cheesy, and absolutely delicious! For our main meals, we had the Copper Star Burger and Old Town Steak Gorgonzola. While both were delicious, I favored the burger since the steak on the Steak Gorgonzola was a bit overcooked. Incredible!! I celebrated a recent birthday here, after going to spring training for the Seattle Mariners. This was a fabulous end to a beautiful day. We started with cocktails just as the sun was going down. The view is amazing, and when the sky darkens, the water tower is lit and it's pretty magical. The restaurant has tables, but also a counter lining the patio, a good spot for a couple to unwind and get sunset vibes. Cocktails were visually stunning and quite a flavor combination. They were beautiful just to take in. Our server was friendly and made recommendations for the table. I opted for the Steak Gorgonzola. It was so creamy, so flavorful , I'd forgotten how much I love gorgonzola. Very tender steak, great flavors in each bite. Others at the table tried the Gilbert Ranch Steak, very tasty, tender and great chimichurri accompaniment. As it was my birthday, we got a churros served with sparklers. Very festive. This was a conflicting dinner experience- for some reasons it was amazing and for some reasons it was... subpar. The vibe was so nice watching the sunset and drinking a cocktail. The service was super slow being that it was a busy night with only one bartender for happy hour. The ceviche had great flavor but the shrimps were whole leading to a difficult eating experience and they were slightly under done. The sol de Arizona drink was good, but pretty light on the alcohol, not spicy at all despite the "habanero" in it. The steak Gorgonzola was absolutely delicious. PERFECTLY cooked steak. The best drink EVER is the purple one, made with Sotol which is a tequila-adjacent liquor, and I would drink That damn thing every day, legit. Ingredients in it are: sotol | butterfly pea | coconut rum | pineapple | lime | orgeat *Flavor Profile: "refreshing and bright, smokey, slightly grassy, vegetal, and tropical notes". It was SPECTACULAR. Steve had the Ol' Salty Beach, the blue one, which was: tequila | curacao | lime | agave | house-made sea salt, lime foam *Flavor Profile: "cadillac style margarita with the delicious smooth taste of a lime sea foam in every sip". Just delicious. That delightful sea salt foam was a revelation. We ordered the queso fundidio and it was good- but heavy. Great flavor between chorizo, pineapple, cheese, and herbs. I would not order this me t time- not because it isn't good, it is..but because it's too much with a dinner. Alone, this is a perfect happy hour bite. We also each had tacos for dinner. The servings were huge, two tacos with incredible, fresh ingredients on top of each one. I got the shrimp which had a wonderful spicy mayonnaise on it and Steve got the steak which was incredible and was laced with lots of fresh, grilled jalapeños. Their guac was good too- and they served micro green cilantro on top of the tacos, which was incredibly fresh and bright. Really really loved the food here. I've been wanting to check this place out for a while. Right from the start, the elevator was out of order, which wasn't ideal. When we got inside, the place was mostly empty -- only a couple of other guests -- yet we were told to sit anywhere except along a section of tables by the wall. I pointed out a table at the far end, well away from the entrance, but was directed instead to what felt like the least desirable table, with the reasoning being they might need the space for a large party. After a bit of back-and-forth, they eventually let us sit where we preferred, but it made for a poor first impression -- especially considering the restaurant never filled up. Tried a few cocktails -- they were well made and enjoyable, definitely the highlight of the visit. Overall, good drinks but the initial experience left a sour note -- may or may not return. Went here with a group for a birthday dinner loved food, cocktails and view. However, the place is severely under staffed. There was one waitress and one bartender for the entire restaurant. Honestly, I felt bad for both of them as they were working so hard but just could not keep up with all of the customers in the restaurant. This made getting a second drink very difficult and the wait was just too long to be able to enjoy. Additionally, this place is advertised as 18 and up establishment. Because of this we were unable to invite someone to join us for dinner. However, I was shocked to see two young children at the restaurant at two different tables. I had been wanting to try this place for quite a while. I read about the daunting stairs to get to this 3rd floor rooftop bar/restaurant. Never fear--there is an elevator when you go in through the back door from the parking lot behind the building. This place is very small--maybe two or three tables on the inside, and bar that is half indoors and half outdoors. There is not a lot of decor. There is a mural on one wall, but that's about it. Of course, the real thing to look at is the excellent view of downtown Gilbert. I will say that the music here is loud - - way too loud. I left there with my throat feeling a little rough after having to talk so loudly just to have a conversation. We ordered cocktails, and they were both fantastic! They were strong, so you definitely get your money's worth in alcohol. The food was just as good. Delicious!! We got: *Sotol So Good (cocktail) *Jumping Cholla (cocktail) *Rooftop Pepita Hummus *Filet is Mignon Steak Tacos Neither of us was terribly hungry, so we split the hummus and tacos. Such a cute bar with a nice view, delicious drinks, good food, and nice servers. I ordered the sunset tini which was super tasty and the copper state burger which was unique and yummy. All of the toppings went well together and I really liked the balsamic reduction. In the winter they have heat lamps on to keep you warm, and during the summer they have misters which is nice! The only downside would be the the stairs you have to take to get to the top and the tree that blocks the view of part of the patio. However, I will definitely be coming back! read more

I will say the climb to the top of the three-story building that this restaurant is in can be difficult if you have any aches and pains in your knees or ankles. Staff was very friendly. My office held our Christmas party here - rented the entire place out, in fact. It's such a cute and cozy place in there. The capacity is 85 and there were 75 of us at the party, so it was almost a full house. But it was the perfect setting for a little office party. Everyone agreed that the service was 11/10! There were plenty of waiters and bartenders who made their rounds many times throughout the night. They consistently kept us updated on when the food was coming out and to never hesitate if we had any questions or concerns. There was a drink menu with several cocktails, and there was a "smashed margarita" on the menu. I ordered that because you can't go wrong with a marg, and fortunately, the bartender asked me if I liked spice because the margarita was spicy. Thank god she mentioned that because I told her to hold the spice. I then used my other two drink tickets for two other cocktails on the menu - both were very delicious. There was also some food prepared, and even though I didn't try anything, everyone else said it was good. The spread certainly looked tasty.
