On a Saturday night after grabbing some ice cream at Topo, we stopped by Sotol Modern Cocktail Kitchen for a nightcap. Located in downtown Gilbert, Sotol is a rooftop bar and restaurant. I love a good rooftop and the weather was perfect. While they don't have a parking lot, free parking is available on the street and in the various surface lots and garages in the area. Ambiance (4.5/5): It's tough to beat a rooftop. Here you'll have nice views of downtown Gilbert, including the historic Gilbert water tower (which lights up at night). It's not a huge restaurant/bar, probably 50 seats or so. A good number of tables and then 15 seats or so at the bar. We sat at the bar. There's a pretty nice mural on one end too. Service (4/5): A little slow to start out with and to close out, but overall, friendly. We found one of the last four remaining seats at the bar. If not for that, there would have been a wait. One drink and then we made our way. Overall, about average. Food (N/A): I was on a liquid diet for this visit but they do have a full menu. Drinks (4/5): Interesting craft cocktail list. The first one on the list is a Sotol cocktail. If you've never had Sotol, it's a Mexican spirit. Not tequila and not mezcal, but somewhat similar to mezcal and it does have a bit of a smoky flavor. The Sotol So Good has sotol, butterfly pea, coconut rum, pineapple, lime, and orgeat. It's purple so it makes an impression. It packs a punch too. If you're looking for a cool spot to grab some food and drinks in the heart of downtown Gilbert, when the weather is nice, Sotol is a great choice! read more

Visited Sotol Modern Cocktail Kitchen while in Gilbert. The atmosphere was modern and open, and the service started off a bit off-putting, though it improved slightly as the visit went on. I've been wanting to check this place out for a while. Right from the start, the elevator was out of order, which wasn't ideal. When we got inside, the place was mostly empty -- only a couple of other guests -- yet we were told to sit anywhere except along a section of tables by the wall. I pointed out a table at the far end, well away from the entrance, but was directed instead to what felt like the least desirable table, with the reasoning being they might need the space for a large party. After a bit of back-and-forth, they eventually let us sit where we preferred, but it made for a poor first impression -- especially considering the restaurant never filled up. Tried a few cocktails -- they were well made and enjoyable, definitely the highlight of the visit. Overall, good drinks but the initial experience left a sour note -- may or may not return. Sotol is a must visit in Downtown Gilbert! It offers one of the only rooftop views throughout the town, and their food and drinks are both delicious! Service has bee friendly and prompt every time I've visited, and it's always got a good crowd (but not overcrowded) on weekends during happy hour times. On the most recent visit I had a smoke old fashioned for a drink, which is one of my favorites. For food, we started with their queso fundido. This is an extremely friendly portion, very cheesy, and absolutely delicious! For our main meals, we had the Copper Star Burger and Old Town Steak Gorgonzola. While both were delicious, I favored the burger since the steak on the Steak Gorgonzola was a bit overcooked. Incredible!! I celebrated a recent birthday here, after going to spring training for the Seattle Mariners. This was a fabulous end to a beautiful day. We started with cocktails just as the sun was going down. The view is amazing, and when the sky darkens, the water tower is lit and it's pretty magical. The restaurant has tables, but also a counter lining the patio, a good spot for a couple to unwind and get sunset vibes. Cocktails were visually stunning and quite a flavor combination. They were beautiful just to take in. Our server was friendly and made recommendations for the table. I opted for the Steak Gorgonzola. It was so creamy, so flavorful , I'd forgotten how much I love gorgonzola. Very tender steak, great flavors in each bite. Others at the table tried the Gilbert Ranch Steak, very tasty, tender and great chimichurri accompaniment. As it was my birthday, we got a churros served with sparklers. Very festive. This was a conflicting dinner experience- for some reasons it was amazing and for some reasons it was... subpar. The vibe was so nice watching the sunset and drinking a cocktail. The service was super slow being that it was a busy night with only one bartender for happy hour. The ceviche had great flavor but the shrimps were whole leading to a difficult eating experience and they were slightly under done. The sol de Arizona drink was good, but pretty light on the alcohol, not spicy at all despite the "habanero" in it. The steak Gorgonzola was absolutely delicious. PERFECTLY cooked steak. Went here with a group for a birthday dinner loved food, cocktails and view. However, the place is severely under staffed. There was one waitress and one bartender for the entire restaurant. Honestly, I felt bad for both of them as they were working so hard but just could not keep up with all of the customers in the restaurant. This made getting a second drink very difficult and the wait was just too long to be able to enjoy. Additionally, this place is advertised as 18 and up establishment. Because of this we were unable to invite someone to join us for dinner. However, I was shocked to see two young children at the restaurant at two different tables. Great place for a date, spectacular sunset views, chill vibe with music just loud enough to ensure you only hear yourselves and not the other patrons. The best drink EVER is the purple one, made with Sotol which is a tequila-adjacent liquor, and I would drink That damn thing every day, legit. Ingredients in it are: sotol | butterfly pea | coconut rum | pineapple | lime | orgeat *Flavor Profile: "refreshing and bright, smokey, slightly grassy, vegetal, and tropical notes". It was SPECTACULAR. Steve had the Ol' Salty Beach, the blue one, which was: tequila | curacao | lime | agave | house-made sea salt, lime foam *Flavor Profile: "cadillac style margarita with the delicious smooth taste of a lime sea foam in every sip". Just delicious. That delightful sea salt foam was a revelation. We ordered the queso fundidio and it was good- but heavy. Great flavor between chorizo, pineapple, cheese, and herbs. I would not order this me t time- not because it isn't good, it is..but because it's too much with a dinner. Alone, this is a perfect happy hour bite. We also each had tacos for dinner. The servings were huge, two tacos with incredible, fresh ingredients on top of each one. I got the shrimp which had a wonderful spicy mayonnaise on it and Steve got the steak which was incredible and was laced with lots of fresh, grilled jalapeños. Their guac was good too- and they served micro green cilantro on top of the tacos, which was incredibly fresh and bright. Really really loved the food here. Service was amazing, attentive, but not overbearing, and our server was sweet and friendly. Would totally go here again. I attended a private holiday party at Sotol Rooftop bar in Gilbert. This was my first visit. After passing by the front of the building and seeing all the stairs up to the entrance, I was thrilled and VERY relieved there is an accessible elevator around back!This made me so happy, especially after my recent knee surgery. Such a cute bar with a nice view, delicious drinks, good food, and nice servers. I ordered the sunset tini which was super tasty and the copper state burger which was unique and yummy. All of the toppings went well together and I really liked the balsamic reduction. In the winter they have heat lamps on to keep you warm, and during the summer they have misters which is nice! The only downside would be the the stairs you have to take to get to the top and the tree that blocks the view of part of the patio. However, I will definitely be coming back! read more

I had been wanting to try this place for quite a while. I read about the daunting stairs to get to this 3rd floor rooftop bar/restaurant. Never fear--there is an elevator when you go in through the back door from the parking lot behind the building. This place is very small--maybe two or three tables on the inside, and bar that is half indoors and half outdoors. There is not a lot of decor. There is a mural on one wall, but that's about it. Of course, the real thing to look at is the excellent view of downtown Gilbert. I will say that the music here is loud - - way too loud. I left there with my throat feeling a little rough after having to talk so loudly just to have a conversation. We ordered cocktails, and they were both fantastic! They were strong, so you definitely get your money's worth in alcohol. The food was just as good. Delicious!! We got: *Sotol So Good (cocktail) *Jumping Cholla (cocktail) *Rooftop Pepita Hummus *Filet is Mignon Steak Tacos Neither of us was terribly hungry, so we split the hummus and tacos. The servings were very large. Omg that hummus was amazing! I could have had just the hummus for my meal and I wish I had more room in my belly to eat because it was so good. There were towels on one table, cleaning supplies on the bar, barstools were stacked together and there was one man behind the bar and two people who appeared to be employees chatting at a table. We were never greeted. After 10 minutes we asked someone who was doing set up work if perhaps we misunderstood their opening time. The presentation was pretty but the food was delicious! The service was great! They checked up on us frequently and had a great attitude. We settled in at the bar and my husband and I ordered the following drinks: Smashed Margarita $13 Night in Oaxaca $16 The smashed margarita comes with tequila, mixed berries, lime, agave, and spicy bitters. It was refreshing with a nice balance of tart and spice. The night in Oaxaca features mezcal, grapefruit, lime, orgeat, and amaro. This was a beautiful drink with a mix of citrus and smoky flavors. While the bar is cute and does provide amazing views of downtown Gilbert, the atmosphere was completely ruined by their speakers which was also acknowledged by the servers. It was very hard to even hold conversations. They should have just turned them off. The drinks were decent. I ordered the Sotol so good and it was tasty, smoky and fruity. My friend ordered the Daquiri and she loved it. Husband ordered the smoked old fashioned and he thought it was great. The bar is located in the 3rd floor and you do have to walk up. Went out for a drink in appetizers Friday evening in downtown Gilbert. Wanted to try someplace a little bit different that we have not been to. I will say the climb to the top of the three-story building that this restaurant is in can be difficult if you have any aches and pains in your knees or ankles. Staff was very friendly. Great view of downtown Gilbert from the patio. We got an appetizer and two drinks. Reasonably priced for sure and the quesadilla we ordered was delicious. A lot of cheese and the chicken was flavorful. Just a word of warning The restaurant is very small. Maybe 10 tables. Perfect place to get away from the chaos of downtown Gilbert Road. The mixologist put together the specialty drinks to perfection. Two of us were there early in the evening on a Friday holiday weekend. I was surprised that it wasn't packed at the time we went & grateful. Noise level was perfect at that time of night. My office held our Christmas party here - rented the entire place out, in fact. It's such a cute and cozy place in there. The capacity is 85 and there were 75 of us at the party, so it was almost a full house. But it was the perfect setting for a little office party. Everyone agreed that the service was 11/10! There were plenty of waiters and bartenders who made their rounds many times throughout the night. They consistently kept us updated on when the food was coming out and to never hesitate if we had any questions or concerns. There was a drink menu with several cocktails, and there was a "smashed margarita" on the menu. I ordered that because you can't go wrong with a marg, and fortunately, the bartender asked me if I liked spice because the margarita was spicy. Thank god she mentioned that because I told her to hold the spice. I then used my other two drink tickets for two other cocktails on the menu - both were very delicious. There was also some food prepared, and even though I didn't try anything, everyone else said it was good. The spread certainly looked tasty. For food, if you want to indulge, they don't have a lot of options given it is a cocktail bar, but their Copper Star Burger is the best! Do try their Rooftop Hummus and Loaded Yucca Fries as well!! Sotol is a cool rooftop spot easily seen from the street, but tucked away up a few flights of stairs. The climb is worth it. Primarily an outdoor rooftop with limited inside space, the 'mister' help to keep the temperature as cool as the vibe. Both are complimented by an eclectic - but funky - playlist and accented by delicious cocktails, appetizers and meals. The service was outstanding leading to a tremendous value and experience.
