I came here with two friends who were visiting from out of town, and we had such a good time! We sat at the bar, and the atmosphere was really fun with great vibes all around. The service was great too, and everyone took good care of us. I ordered a Blue Hawaiian, and we shared the lobster dip. The dip was okay--it was a little too cream cheese-heavy for me, and I would've loved a stronger lobster flavor, but it was still worth trying. One of the highlights was the Roll the Dice challenge on the menu! Definitely recommend giving it a try if you're feeling lucky. Absolutely amazing. Have been to this location and the one in Arcadia and it is absolutely on par. The immersive environment is still done so well. Not cheesy, but truly transportive. It was super easy to make reservations, we were warmly welcomed by the hostesses the moment we arrived, and the atmosphere was beyond immersive. And of course... the drinks were incredible! I kicked off our 90-minute experience with the Blackberry Yuzu Margarita, and it was the perfect balance of crisp, sweet, and tart. I wrapped things up with the Macadamia Nut Piña Colada which, fittingly for being "aboard" a pirate ship, was delightfully rum-forward without being overly sweet. In between cocktails, we shared a couple of snacks that were such a welcome addition -- something you sadly don't always find at local speakeasies! The service was top-notch thanks to our bartender Rocco, whose knowledge and attention to detail made the experience even more fun. This place is pretty cool for a date night. Can't say we would go back, but it was neat for an experience. I don't like that there's an automatic health fund contribution for employees on the bill. I'd rather that be built into the price of the drinks. Although it's already expensive, it would only be like another $.75 per drink, but seeing it as a separate charge is off putting. read more

We made a reservation to checkout Undertow as part of our Supper Club for the month. We were dining at Buck and Rider, Undertow is right next door. The bar is a pirate ship theme and as you walk in you are seated in the belly of the ship. The decor here is so awesome. Amazing attention to detail everywhere you look. They have ocean sounds playing and if you are lucky enough you'll catch the tiki man and thunderstorm show! They have a wide selection of fun themed drinks, all around the $20 range and some shots. Reservations are limited to 90 min, which is plenty of time and allows turn over of tables seeing's how the bar itself is pretty small. Definitely go checkout Undertow! Such a beautiful place to visit on our trip from LA! What a tiki wonderland filled with speakeasy surprises! In the Chinese speakeasy inspired bar we had wonderful drinks prepared by our bartender Kaitlin. I had the Tom Kah and boyfriend had the Emperors Tea. They were so delightful and smooth. The Tom kha was very zesty and lemony. I had fun enjoying the duck wall behind glass and saw for the first time the railway train car speakeasy attached to the outside bar near the entrance which I missed last time I visited. Last time I visited was a Saturday and it was so slammed wait time was over an hour so we didn't get to drink, this time was perfect, no wait on a Thursday night! Boyfriend and I stopped at the undertow tiki bar last and enjoyed the surreal view through the boat windows lining the walls by the tables and the wonderful service and conversation as I purchased two of the highball glasses from Flint. What a kind and exceptionally friendly person he is, and if I'd come sooner I would've loved to try a drink from him but next time! All staff was hospitable. Undertow is easily the most interesting bar I've been too in AZ so much to take in, so artistic, very unique, a get away for certain that I'd love to return to. read more

This was such a cool experience! I am definitely bringing more people here to check it out! It is super dark when you are in there and cold so bring a jacket. But both drinks we got were amazing and they have happy hour which is 20% off their drinks. I ordered the blue Hawaii and the drink my husband ordered I believe was called panthers tooth. We've been trying to get into Undertow for a year now and I've never quite been able to get in until last night. We were waiting for dinner at Buck and Rider and went next-door to see if we could get a drink while waiting. The host greeted us nicely and said that as long as we could be gone within 45 minutes that they would love to welcome us in since they had other reservations, but that worked out perfect because like I said we were waiting for our table next-door anyway. It is small but decorated beautifully thankfully there are no steps because it is dark and you kind of feel a little lost as you're walking through but the ambience is very cool. It feels like just tropical and lush all around you. We were seated at a two top along the wall, which seemed like a small space however, it had a really cool cut out window with a moving landscape of water and an island that through the course of the time as we were sitting there, changed to a storm and then cleared it up again it was just really beautiful visually and didn't feel so closed in. The menu was a large variety of cocktails obviously you need to like rum and bourbon and all of the things that pirates and island feels give. Our server made some suggestions. We ordered two different drink drinks. The first was the macadamia nut piña colada I think we are expecting a little more coconut flavor to this drink however, it was very delicious. Definitely strong. The other was actually our server suggestion that had peaked my interest because it had guava in it and that was called off the grid. It was delicious. It was perfectly balanced with sweet and sour lemon, pineapple guava with bourbon and other flavors. On our way out, I did hit the restroom. They have two neutral bathrooms. It was large. As a former camp director (pirate week was always my favorite), I've got a soft spot for immersive places and Undertow nails it. From the decor to the lighting, the thunderous sounds every last From the glowing portholes to the cargo netting overhead with floating glass orbs, it really feels like you've stepped below deck... in the middle of Gilbert. The space is small, which I love and no rowdy crowds, just the kind of intimate spot where you can talk. The only things I'd tweak? The sound carries a bit in the space, maybe some sound dampening panels coulf help would make conversations easier. And I wouldn't mind a bit more pirate energy right when you walk in. Nothing too theatrical, just a simple "Welcome aboard maties!" Just a nod to the theme to set the mood before you even hit the bar. The immersion's already solid, a little extra would make it unforgettable. But truly? The drinks hit, the setting was unforgettable, and the hospitality was smooth sailing. We have visited Undertow multiple times and although reservations are recommended, we have been lucky to walk in as a group some nights. Notably we had mentioned a birthday celebration for a reservation and received a signed card at the end of our visit. Ambiance was incredible. We were told that the designers of the bar also worked at Disney, hence the magical feel. The audio was reminiscent of being overseas and there would be occasional thunder storms that hit the bar. There were porthole tables for two, with beautiful waves splashing in the background. The booths were reserved for larger groups and we enjoyed how spacious the tables were. Service was always phenomenal. Since the menu keeps changing, we ask for recommendations and our servers kill it every time. The cocktails are always complex yet accurate to the flavors listed on the menu. Personally I found their pineapple and cream based drinks to be the richest in flavor. The alcohol content was strong and nothing ever tasted watered down. Some of the drinks we found to be memorable over the years include: *Royal Hawaiian *Starboard and Steady *Shipless Sailor *Rations & Grog *Those Baby Blues *Pumpkin Spice Pina Colada My favorite bar of all time in terms of atmosphere and taste. Such a fun bar and experience! If you've never come to UnderTow, you definitely need to add it to your list. A really fun change than your typical bar. Walk-in's are welcome, but I would recommend making a reservation. It's pretty hit or miss if you'll be able to get in without one. The inside is epic! You feel like you're on a ship out at sea. The atmosphere really sets the tone with the sound effects, rain, and the port holes changing scenes. It's so much fun! The menu has a great variety. Classics and their own creations. UnderTow is a cocktail bar inside an immersive cargo hold of an old world ship. They serve crafted tiki cocktails inspired by global flavors, blending tradition with innovation. Space is small and seating is mostly bar with a few tables. Reservations are highly recommended and are good for 90 minutes. The staff and bartenders were super friendly and helpful. I chose the Lil Kingston Heat, which features Ilegal "Caribbean Cask" Mezcal. It was tasty, with a bit of heat which I really enjoyed! I would definitely return. read more

Don't bother going but especially from Friday-Sunday. I made a reservation for my group of 6 and paid a deposit of $90 total which I was told would go towards my drinks once there. I understand needing collateral for a reservation on a busy weekend, however, when the bill came at the end of the night, they only took off $72 and when I asked the server she said there was nothing they could do about the extra $18 since that's a "service charge". On the final bill, there was also an extra 4% staff fee and then you are still expected to tip. I basically wasted $18 even though I still showed up and honestly for mediocre drinks and sub-par seating. Cool concept I guess, but really poor execution. read more

What can I say about this place that hasn't already been said time and time again? Everything from the service to the ambiance is top-notch. Of course, this place is known for its cocktails, so naturally they should be great--but trust me, I've been to several cocktail-only establishments that were lackluster. Absolutely NOT the case here. You could literally put all the pages of the menu on a wall, throw a dart, and whatever you hit would be delicious and interesting in its own right. The place is a little small, but honestly, that's what I love about it. It feels cozy in all the right ways. It's also very relaxing, floating along the sea with some delightful surprises here and there. We ordered several drinks, but one that's not on the menu (and they do make it) is the Pearl Diver, which is magnificent here. Their Anchors Up! mocktail is possibly the best mocktail I've ever had, it had non-alcoholic Jamaican Rum, london gin, chartreuse, strawberry, coconut, ancho chile, lemon, pineapple, and buttered honey. The last time I was at UnderTow was at the original Phoenix location in 2017 and they had storms with sounds and lights, and cargo boxes throughout, though this location does not have that it still has the portholes, and actually has more seating to accommodate large parties. What I really liked about this location was the friendly service and that we were walk-ins on a Sunday afternoon. They were able to immediately seat us. Each cocktail we ordered was delicious and served up in a fun and unique tiki presentations. Both locations have the same set up for the most part. Appeared to be about the same size as well? There are bar seats, 2 tops surrounding the bar area, and a couple of booths. Each location gives you the experience of being on a floating pirate ship, enjoying the finest and solid strength tiki drinks. The menus appeared to differ and that could be due to visiting at different time of year. Service was polite, prompt, and my only critique is that I felt a bit rushed in the reservation window with 5 people, whereas with 2 people the time limited is no problem. (This was marathon day of drinking for me.) Vibe wise, very dark and colorful. Like you are having drinks in a cave or the bottom section of a boat.
