You feel incredibly rushed throughout the experience. They want you in and they want you out more or less as soon as you arrive. You are nothing more than a table for them to churn. The drinks are solid, but if you care to sacrifice a good time for decent drinks this is the place for you. We didn't even reach anywhere close to the paltry 1 hour and 30 minute time limit where they're expected to give you the boot and someone is coming up to your table to let you know you need to leave immediately. If you are looking for something fun and different to do look no further than Undertow. My wife and I joined our friends who are regulars here. It was our first time visiting this themed bar. It's kind of like Disneyland for drinkers. The place is themed like the inside of an old pirate ship. It even has port holes with screens that make it look like you are on the ocean. It's a very fun vibe. They have an extensive drink menu. All of the drinks that we tried were fantastic. The service was great and we were never disappointed. If you've been to the Phoenix location, this one is pretty much exactly the same. That being said, it's awesome! I've been to the Phoenix location four times. This was my first time at the Gilbert one and it did not disappoint. Amazing drinks with a crazy variety of ingredients I can guarantee at least half of which you've never heard of before. My husband and I were so excited that an UnderTow opened in Gilbert. We had gone to the one in Phoenix , but now we have one 10 minutes away from us. There's so much great food right around Undertow, it's the perfect night out to grab a nice meal then head over to undertow for an experience and crafted cocktails. I made a reservation for us 4, which I highly recommend everyone does. It's a very small space and it will fill up fast on a busy night. Was very happy we got the perfect spot in a booth, so I could see all the great details in the place . One thing about going here , I do not know much about crafted cocktails/the ingredients in them; so it's wonderful that ALL the people working there are so knowledgeable and know the menu can be overwhelming. Both times I have gone , I have relied heavily on the server to tell me the best ones I should get based off the flavors I like. I have liked every cocktail I've gotten ! And my so did my friends! I don't think you can wrong with any drink here or any recommendation you are given . All the drinks are a great balance and always beautifully presented and garnished . The main reason I wanted to go here for my birthday was because I absolutely love the tiki vibe/theme and inside the bar is just the perfect setting for that ! A very unique drinking experience transports you to an old tropical ship filled with tiki decor. It's a bit smoky looking inside giving the appearance of being in the bottom of a dark ship. It's very cool. You can either sit up at the bar or you can reserve a table next to a porthole. The portholes are cool because each is screen that gives the appearance of a tropical destination with the waves crashing along side. When the weather changes to a tropical storm the rain is pouring down and you can see the lightening. Very cool experience. There is a 90 minute limit, which definitely went too fast. I was hoping they would let us stay longer as there was only one other couple inside the bar when we were there because we went right when they opened, but nope. They booted us out at exactly the 90 minute mark regardless of the lack of patrons. I do believe it's because their drinks are very strong and they don't want a bunch of drunk people inside. Who doesn't like pirates? This is UnderTow's second location. I visited the original one in Phoenix years back. UnderTow is an award-winning cocktail bar with an interior that resembles the hull of a mid-19th-century sailing vessel. It is part of the Barter and Shake Creative Hospitality group - the team behind Century Grand. The bar is complete with smoke effects and portholes with a video loop that makes you feel you are on the water. Majority of the menu consists of classic Tiki drinks and other Latin-inspired cocktails. UnderTow is located at Gilbert's Epicenter at Agritopia. Like the Phoenix location, the bar only holds a limited amount of people. They will take walk-ins if there is seating, but reservations are recommended and can be found on their website. You have to put a credit card down and and seating is only for the 90-minutes. We had a nice time and enjoyed the experience. We especially enjoyed the storm special effects. read more

This will be my 2nd visit to Undertow and we LOVE this place. It is an experience from the second you get seated. You have to make reservations and there is a time limit when there. That is standard with most speakeasy bars. We have sat at the bar and at a small table by the window. The window seats are cool for the simulated ocean view that will go sunny to stormy once during your stay. Other than that, the tables are tiny and the space is tight. The menu is very overwhelming because they carry a lot of cocktail options and each cocktail is complex. The servers/bartenders have been awesome with assistance navigating the menu and make great recommendations. Going to a place like this...it is best to have an idea of what you like--spirit forward or subtle, which spirit you prefer, and I challenge anyone to have an open mind to try something new. This is the 2nd location to be built in the Valley. It's a tiki-style cocktail bar that puts you onboard a turn-of-the-century ship voyage, by traveling through unique custom decor, lighting and special effects like thunderstorms and glimpsing out to the rocky seas through the various porthole(s) The total experience that you'll have to be aware of, is that this is only 90 minutes tour. It's a small venue inside, but the adventure wouldn't be the same if the space was any bigger. The menu consists of many exotic cocktails and a variety of "on-theme" signature drinks. Time is limited to 90min reservations and you get great service while you are there. If you have friends or family coming from out of town, it would be a great place to visit. 4 stars instead of 5 because me and my friend are not regular drink people so we weren't sure what to order and staff that night was busy and did not have drinks to recommend. It's an experience ; you are drinking and sailing on a spice ship complete with ocean storms and all the things . The bartenders are very good at their craft but unfortunately have been trained to literally PACK The drinks with so much ice . It was pretty bad , we sat near the ice packing section and were amazed at how much crushed ice kept going into the drinks . We've been to UnderTow in Phoenix a couple of times, and so we were excited to see one open much closer to us in Gilbert! If you're going, it's highly recommended to make a reservation. The process is easy, online, with an upfront charge that's then applied to your drink order. They do get pretty busy here especially on the weekends so we've done earlier evening times. Overall, I do enjoy the experience. It's a nice step away from everything, "on a boat". Drinks are good too, the way they dress them up and present. No doubt that drinks are overpriced but if you're looking for a fun date night or going for a more special occasion, I do think it's worth it! read more

We were very excited about this place and waited in line to get in once they finally opened. Since the inside was quite small, reservations are definitely recommended. The concept of this place is a pirate ship and therefore the drinks were tiki heavy. However, they had lots of options for non-tiki drinks, which was why we would be able to come here often. The drinks were strong and tasty, especially impressive just by looking at how many ingredients each cocktail contained. Each hour, they had an interactive performance where the room would be dark, and there would be lightening, thunders, and followed by music. As a customer, it was very cool and startled me every time. However, as a former resident upstairs, it was our nightmare that each performance would shake the whole apartment. We went to this place a lot, either for a date night, to hangout with friends, or one stop of a bar hopping experience. I was excited when I heard that they opened a location closer to me in Gilbert! I finally got to check it out, starting with dinner at Barnone nearby before walking over. This is your tiki bar in Gilbert. No where else that I know of will come close. No reservation was needed on a Monday night at 8:30. There were only a few other groups there and it was mostly empty by the time we were done at 9:30. The drink menu has a lot of cool options. We were feeling mezcal so we got the Silhouette of a Man (smoky and fruity), and Jungle Stowaway (boozy and bitter, but tasty). The atmosphere goes all in with porthole windows showing the ocean sunset and fog in the air. Every hour there is a storm where the lights go down, visual and auditory rain effects kick in, and an occasional crack of thunder. So fun! read more

The location: Situated right next to Belly on the side of the Epicenter nearest to Joes Farm Grill. There is only one door no outside seating so be on the lookout for the Undertow signage. Lots of parking and easy walking distance from parking to the door. Great for Ubers/Lyft access too. The ambiance: FIRST - i want to apologize. I normally take so many pictures but as soon as i entered, i wanted to experience everything without my phone. I'll be back in the future to update my review with pics. So you enter the door and the ambiance immediately sucks you in. Am I even in Gilbert any more?! It's dark and decor is flanked on every single ounce of the walk way that leads you to the bar. Many many photo opportunities to be had all through that walk way. The bar area is smaller than I expected, dark, and the decor doesn't disappoint. The portholes were one of my favorite design touches. The music was just the right volume. I could hear all my friends at our table but there was still enough background noise to where you didn't hear other people's convos. They have one large u-shaped tabletop around the bar and various tables behind that could seat 4-6 people. Along the wall there are smaller 2-person tables with portholes to "look" out of. The service: We were served by Mercy and she was so extremely helpful and patient with us newbies. She made us feel more than just a customer, like we had a friend waiting for us to arrive and helped us figure out what we were feeling like drinking. Love that she was the one to make our drinks as well. I felt like we were completely taken care of and I appreciate that! The beverages: Unique, strong and delicious. I had the Piña Colada and sucked it down before I remembered to take a pic (my apologies lol) Things to also note: They do have shots and I want to go back to just try those alone! The drinks are pricy but we'll worth it. These are NOT your normal drinks!! They are all uniquely crafted including their mocktails. Designated drivers have no fear, you can drink alongside your boozy friends with mocktails that make you feel like you're boozying up with them. The reservation is only for 90 minutes and they will remind you before your time is up. So if you're thinking of spending the whole night here, probably won't happen unless it's slow (which I'm pretty sure rarely happens) and you get another reservation. So just be mindful of that. They have 3 unisex bathrooms and all properly decorated of course. And all were appropriately stocked. Lastly to note, they do not have any food but it is at the Epicenter which has many places to eat. Don't forget Air Guitar also has some munchies too including pizza. I came here with my husband and our friends whom we were hosting from out of town. We were celebrating a career milestone. I had been to Platform 18 at Century Grand before, but have never been to UnderTow. Fortunately, this one in Gilbert is closer to where I live. The location was a little hard to find because it's a small entrance next to large restaurant. We did not have a reservation, but the hosts up front at the entrance were very helpful and able to get us a spot; we opted for the bar, which was otherwise empty. As soon as we walked in, we loved the ambiance. The portholes with views of the ocean or island, and the sound effects make you feel like you are on a ship. The only thing that could make it more realistic would be if the whole floor were to rock the way a ship does, but that would be going above and beyond! Although the drinks are mostly tropical, I wouldn't call this a tiki bar, per se. After being seated, we were given menus, which have a map of Mayan ruins and pyramids on the back. The drink menu is definitely extensive, and because we were going to be driving our guests to the airport later, we appreciated having non-alcoholic options on the menu as well. All the drinks we ordered were tropical. I didn't really understand all the flavours that went into my drink, but I couldn't pass up the chance to order a drink with a name as mystifying as "The Goddess of Mystery". I was glad I took a chance on it, because it turned out really good. As we sipped on our drinks, we experienced the environment change from views of a a laid back tropical island, to stormy seas, and finally clear views of the shore. I have been super excited for this place to open up and finally was able to stop by! Make sure to make a reservation online. They do book out fast since there are limited seating. You will be charged $20 per person the time you book the reservation, but then you get the amount you already paid subtracted out when the total bill comes. They do celebrations there so make sure to make it when you are making your reservation. There are many restaurants nearby if you want to grab something to eat before or after the time you are grabbing drinks. Inside was very immersive and well themed! We love it so much!! I actually used this opportunity to ask one of my girlfriends to be a bridesmaid for my wedding! They deliver a birthday card when it a birthday celebration, but I asked them to customize it and deliver a message on there asking her to be part of the wedding! What a wonderful experience! I loved this place so much that I went two days in a row, lol. The reservations are a must -- the seating is interesting but we got sat at the bar both times. Capacity is limited and the time you're allowed until you "arrive to your destination" is 1.5 hours. Then you're offered merch and off the ship you go! All three of the Shots Fired! were incredible. The Scorpion for four was shared by two of us. The Book of Hao was incredible and truly something unique. The Saturn was INCREDIBLE -- wonderful frozen cocktail.
