I've been hearing about the UnderTow Phoenix location for years so I was thrilled when the Gilbert location opened up close to my house. I made a reservation for five people about a week in advance, and you do pay $20 per person up front. The interior is fairly small but beautifully decorated. There are "port holes" along the walls with ocean images that change. It really makes you feel like you're in the lower deck of a ship bar. There are only a couple larger tables, and UnderTow caps group size at 6. I would note that our group of 5 did not consist of very large girls, and 6 people would probably be a squeeze. Upon being seated, my group began to browse the menu. There are many options and pages of cocktails, so we asked our server what she recommended. She pretty much brushed us off and said they're all popular depending on the night, and to spend more time looking at the menu. She didn't return for over 15 minutes, and considering the reservations max out at 90 minutes, we were a little put off. The drinks had mixed reception. I loved mine --the tropical itch, which includes a back scratcher you get to take home! It was balanced and not to sweet, and had a good amount of booze in it. One of my friends got the mai tai, and it was so strong she couldn't even drink it. The server comped the drink and told us it's a "traditional" Mai tai, and not the sweet kind --which would probably have been a good disclaimer from the beginning. We waited a while for the server to return so that we could order a second round, and even had to flag down a hostess to go find her. You'll want to make dinner plans before or afterward because there is only one snack option (which is delicious even though it's small). She had the Pi Yi and I had the Twin Monkeys of Copan. Hers tasted like an elevated tiki juice drink that also had peach and other tropical flavors that made it oh so chuggable. The mix on Twin Monkeys was crazy. Somehow the ingredients combine to give a hint of peanut butter, some coconut, some banana. It's A LOT going on in that sipper. This place is so fun and smells like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. The ambiance is so much fun. We came in on a Tuesday and they had us make a reservation so we did right there. 15 minutes later I got the text that it was time to go in. Feels like ur on an old ship and has lots to look at and neat background noises. Only once while we were in there a lightning storm broke out and the special effects were so cool and entertaining. The drinks were overpriced and fruity but pretty neat to watch them be made. Each one was like a unique bar experience with flare like smoke or something else. I was surprised they made us make a res because there was hardly anyone on the inside. The bartender was fantastic. What a fun new spot! We went Friday of opening weekend and and had a great time! It's speakeasy style - drinks only, requires a Reservation, bar is separate from entrance. The staff and bar tenders played the role of a tiki bar/pirate ship the entire time. They did great and were personable. The bar decor / setup was so fun - it felt like we were in an adult version of Disney. There are some fun surprises I won't giveaway here. A group of 4 of us came here on a Saturday night for the first time. Note: we did have to make a reservation which we made a week in a half in advance. But my boyfriend and I were seated at one of the porthole tables and my sister and her friend were seated at the other porthole table behind us. All Aboard! Time to get tipsy at UnderTow! My husband and I have a young toddler and have only been on a few date nights since we had him. My husband found out about Undertow online and decided it was high time for us to have our third date night in 2 1/2 years! He was able to make a reservation, easily online with a small deposit that applied towards our cocktails. He surprised me and I didn't really know what to expect. It was very romantic that after all these years, he pulled off a fun and exciting date night. He gave me little clues throughout the week about what we were going to do and I had no idea. On the way there he told me we were going to an immersive and theatrical speakeasy. My husband and I having met and lived in Los Angeles are very into the arts and I was so surprised to know that something like this existed in Gilbert. We live in Queen Creek so it wasn't a horrible drive at all. Parking is available in the lot. There's a lot to do in this area as well. The Tyler apartment complex, a few boutique stores, and a few restaurants surrounding in case you want to get there early or stay late. Our reservation was marked for 630. We were early so we walked around a little bit and then they texted my husband when our table is ready. We actually got to sit at the bar. Our bartender, who was amazing, commented, comedically that we were sitting at the splash pad. We definitely got some ice and cocktail splashes on us but nothing too crazy and we laughed it off. Our bartender, whose name was Krissy, was absolutely amazing. I've never seen such a great bartender in my life. It was so dark in the place itself. I could barely see anything. The fact that she was just grabbing bottles without even looking at them really showed how talented and experienced she was. All of the bottles are not actual liquor bottles, they are all bottles looking identical with different liquors in them. I've never seen such an extensive, craft cocktail list. It's really incredible. I even had a drink that had soy sauce in it! And it tasted amazing. You're looking at all the cocktails and wondering what the heck half of the stuff is, but you just kind of go for it. My husband is a huge bourbon drinker, and so under the classic section there was something called bourbon special. He drank that. I went for el Diablo with a little bit of tequila. For a second round we asked Krissy what she thought, she recommended the book of hai for my husband and el Robusto for me. We went along with what Krissy said and they were so good. My cocktail actually had a cinnamon fog coming out of it. It was delicious. It tasted like alcohol and coffee altogether. That was the cocktail that even had soy sauce in it. They don't serve food, but it is a really cool, immersive experience as you were on a ship, there is a story that goes along with it. The entire place is themed with being undersea. I don't want to spoil anything or give it away, but it's definitely a very fun date night, if you like craft cocktails, I think even your mind will be blown. Mine still is. I will recommend this place for a date night, a girls night, or really any kind of night because it's so fun and unique. You could use this as an after dinner, drink, place or a pregame place before your night. They have several reservations throughout the night. We of course went with the early one and we're very happy with everything. Since my husband already paid a $40 deposit, we only owed $40 plus our tip at the end so it wasn't an incredibly expensive experience either. We really had the best time. We were so excited for this date night. I booked a reservation online ($26) and couldn't wait to take my wife. So excited I didn't even tell her we were going. we appreciate the atmosphere but the immediate turn off was the smell of the water glasses. Our server was prompt but as my wife and I went to take a sip of water, we noticed an overwhelming smell of fish tank coming from the water glasses. It was so strong, it turned us off to the rest of the experience and we immediately left. If the water glasses smelled like this, we could only imagine what was coming next with the drinks. Think - Quantumania Ant-man, and therefore heavily based on reservations which is $20/person. The establishment is very cool. The drinks are very strong. Some taste good, others are more bitter than good, so READ the ingredients ENTIRELY!! I got stuck in the bathroom, which was fine because it was big, nice, clean and actually smelled good, with relaxing ocean sounds. When making the reservation you basically have to do a $20 deposit per person and this goes towards your drinks. They also charge a $3 processing fee. I did really like the decor inside and it does really feel like you're on a ship. I ordered the Chi Chi drink which was really good. Customer service was good and I thought it was a good experience. Unfortunately my husband and I will not be returning to this location due to the unkind service we received by the hostess (a young g woman with long brown hair and piercings). The drinks were amazing and the bar tender was great however our experience was completely ruined by the woman at the front who checked us in. First I set up a reservation on the website and could only book for 6 people and had to send an email for a bigger party which I did. I never heard back from the company to see if they could reserve a spot for 9 people for my husband's 30th birthday party. I booked a week in advanced and also called daily, and left messages with a call back number and never heard back. Eventually we ended up booking another reservation for an additional 3 people because I never heard back from booking in hopes we could sit together if we talked to them. When we got to undertow we went an hour early to explain the situation to see if they could seat us together and the hostess who was working so rudely made me feel unwanted by the company like I was putting her out to see if we could make this accommodation possible since I could not get ahold of the location. I sat out in the waiting area for a half hour for her to tell me rudely that they could seat us together but our reservation would be pushed back to a later time. I greatly appreciated her but she snapped back at me multiple times saying that is was my fault and that she called me 3 times to make the original reservation of 9 people possible. I honestly did not receive any missed calls from undertow. Anyways I was so happy they could seat us together and was going to let go of how rude the hostess was to me and my husband for his birthday. Now comes our seating time that we waited for. We show up at our designated time and all our friends were checked in. The hostess checked our ID's and had some troubles with my ID. Instead of being flexible about our situation the hostess continued to be rude to primarily myself and made me cry in the doorway with how unprofessional she was behaving and how condescending she was towards me. At one point I just told my husband to go celebrate his 30th with our friends and I would wait outside the restaurant. Eventually I asked one last time for the hostess to let me celebrate with my husband and she let me join our party that I made reservations for. We had a nice time during our stay with the bartender service but because of the situation that followed with the hostess we will NOT be returning to this location and would NOT recommend this establishment to our friends and family. I was so disappointed with how rude and full out mean the lady was choosing to be towards a friendly group of friends wanting to enjoy a friend's 30th birthday. A friend and I came in here for the first time just a bit ago. We had heard of the one in Phoenix but we hadn't had a chance to make it there yet. When we heard about one opening in Gilbert we had to go. Make sure you get reservations and know there is a $20 beverage minimum per person. We got there early and used their texting system to check in. When they let us know our table ready we went the hostess and we're seated at our porthole table within 5 minutes. The service was amazing and the drinks were absolutely delicious! Our waiter was very knowledgeable and able to help us with our drink order. They have an extensive menu which can be a bit intimidating but your server will totally help you out. We each had two drinks, which was all we could fit in during our 90 minute window. They will give you a 30 min warning and then polite nudges when your time is up. We cannot wait to go back and try out more of their cocktails.
