Pretty disappointed with our visit to Backyard in Gilbert. The food was just okay, but the service was honestly worse. Our booth was sticky when we sat down and after asking a few times for someone to wipe it off, they finally handed us a rag and had us do it ourselves. They also messed up our order and charged us for a full pizza instead of the kids pizza we ordered. The beer tower we got didn't work, and when they replaced it, it looked like they just poured the beer into another one while spilling a lot of it. Then one of the kids had a fly in their drink and nobody really seemed to care. They brought it out that way. Just wasn't a great experience overall and we probably won't be back. read more

This has been my second time here and it has been a good experience both times. The first time had live music and he was fantastic! This time it was a DJ before the UFC fights. The inside of this place is great and they have some arcade games. The food in the past I got their chicken tacos, potato Skins, and their Brookie. I recommend the potato skins but I wouldn't get the others again. This time, I got the Asian chicken salad and the carne asada fries. Both tasted great but I was disappointed with the size of the salad for the price, it was way too small. But the carne asada fries were amazingggg!!! I never been into a pub sports bar place with turf as their flooring so it was interesting, they allow dogs inside as well, sooo I wouldn't leave your purse or bag on floor not knowing if a dog pee'd there with turf flooring. With that said I had to sit with my hand bag the whole time dining there with no where to put it or hang in under table like some places have nowadays. Such a fun spot! First time coming to this location - came here for an NFL Sunday slate of games and it was great. Such a vibe! I really liked the open concept design. There are TVs everywhere. Great music playing. Tons of seating and spacing throughout the whole place. They even have a good amount of arcade games scattered around too! It was packed for football but we found seating at the bar. Decent drink menu overall - kind of expected a wider range of draft beers compared to other places around. Food wise, it was pretty solid. Ordered the 'Merica Burger with fries. No complaints! Definitely on the pricey side though. This is a great time out and break from your typical restaurant dining experience. Second time visiting this place, and total 180 from my first visit. Unfortunately due to that, I won't be coming back anytime soon. Came in around 5:30 and it wasn't busy. The server was nice but unfortunately not attentive. Around 6pm it started to pick up and it seemed like there were only 2 servers, 1 being trained, 1 food runner, and 1 bartender. Therefore I want to give the server the benefit of doubt and say she just couldn't keep up with the tables (valid and it happens). However I didn't see front of the house management step in to help (unfortunate). Support was very much needed. A table was sat next to us and they didn't get drinks until about 10 minutes after they were seated. Overall, the service lacked and there was no explanation as to why. Usually if the kitchen is backed up, the server advises of such or management comes up and checks in on the tables. Food was okay. Not terrible but nothing I'd come back for. All in all, the service needs attention and management needs to provide support (starts from the top). Maybe they were just off their game that day. read more

This is a fantastic sports bar. They allow you to make reservations on open door ( we did that for the playoffs for football which was so helpful). They sat us quickly for our reservation despite it being a packed house. They have great happy hour during the week. The crinkle fries are crispy and delicious. The pizza and beer were also refreshing and hit the spot. They have so many TVS including some very big TVs! This bar is dog friend which I love! They have darts and games in the back and open it up to get ventilation on nice days. I wish they would bring the Sonoran white chocolate Arizona brewed beer back! I'll admit--I was a little sad to see Sandbar go, but I have to say, Backyard is a solid replacement. The updates to the interior are great--it still keeps that fun, social vibe but with a fresh new look that really works. I came with a very large group for Sunday brunch, so I'll give the staff some grace. The service was a bit scattered with confusion over who ordered what and when, but given the crowd and timing, it wasn't a dealbreaker. I was a little hesitant to check it out at first after reading mixed Yelp reviews about the food quality, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. What's brunch without a cocktail? I ordered the Espresso Martini (Ketel One vodka, simple syrup, Kahlua, and espresso)--it was good, though definitely leaned on the vodka-heavy side. My boyfriend had the Tea Time (Crown Royal Peach Whiskey, agave nectar, lemon juice, lemonade, and unsweetened tea), and it was so refreshing--definitely worth trying. For my entree, I went with the Chicken & Waffles topped with a sunny-side-up egg, hot sauce, and maple syrup. The waffle was perfectly golden, the chicken tenders crispy and flavorful, and the hot sauce gave it just the right kick. Honestly, a great plate. We had a bit of a rocky start but ended up having a really good experience at Backyard Gilbert during the UFC fights. When I called ahead to ask about reservations, I was told they weren't taken, which was fine. Based on that, we arrived around 6 PM with my husband and some family. When we checked in, however, we were asked if we had a reservation and then told it would be over an hour wait because all of the tables were reserved. That was frustrating, especially since the hostess I spoke with on the phone earlier had been rude. Thankfully, Mike the manager completely turned the night around. He listened to our situation, apologized, and explained how chaotic fight nights can be. He went above and beyond to find us a table that worked for our group, including our two young grandbabies and their mom. His customer service truly made the difference. Once seated, we had a great time watching the fights. The food was solid -- the carne asada fries are a must and loaded with toppings. We also ordered two Asian chicken salads, which were good, but the portion size felt small for the price at $17 each. Overall, the experience had its bumps, but great management, good food, and a fun atmosphere earned Backyard Gilbert a solid 4 stars. Mike deserves a shoutout for saving the night read more

My wife and I spent several hours at the Backyard - Gilbert to watch the Denver Broncos playoff game and had such a fun time viewing the game with so many other local Bronco fans. We sat at one of the bars, with 10 TVs in front of us, all showing the same game. The bartender was very friendly and quite attentive, constantly ensuring our drink orders were filled and if we need to order food, she was there to take our order. I even ended up with a freebie pint, due to a miss order from someone else (my benefit!). Be warned that this place gets pretty packed for college and NFL games. If you need space for a group or just want to ensure you'll get a table, use their reservation system (we initially wanted a high top, but found out they were all reserved). Cornhole is outside on the patio, and lots of tables and booths to the left of the main/center bar. Dog friendly. Ample parking in the lot. read more

Now, the only reason this isn't a five-star rave is the hiccup with service. One of our friends never got their pizza. The staff checked in a couple of times, apologizing and assuring us it was on its way, but sadly, that pizza didn't arrive until the end of the meal. What was supposed to be a part of my friend's meal, he had to have it boxed and took it home. 3.5 stars but I'll round up. The overall experience was a win. Wife and I recently discovered this place. We had never heard of Backyard before and were pleasantly surprised. I got a root beer which was graciously refilled several times. My wife got us a huge pretzel appetizer. It was so soft and hot and delicious. Highly recommend it. We found ourselves there on a Tuesday evening, so we played trivia for the first time ever. It was all about Jurassic Park and was really fun and engaging. I got a pulled pork sandwich with creamy slaw and a pickle while my wife got a buffalo chicken salad. Both were amazing. If you're looking for a great screen experience and a place to watch "the game"...this is it! I'd give them 5 stars on screens. But the service was bare bones and the food was quite expensive. When we arrived we waited for a while for a hostess. When I requested we be placed where we could watch the game she sat us directly under the large screens despite several (at least 10) other tables all around us open. The server worked hard and she was very sweet but she had very little help. She never filled our waters and rarely checked in with us. We bought nachos, a burger, and 3 drinks and spent $70 (before tip). This seemed really high for pretty basic bar food. I will say, the burger was good! The carne asada nachos weren't worth $22. I am not in the restaurant business so I don't know the service life or the shelf life of the basic onion ring but these were rugged.... Barely warm and very hard to chew and digest... I'll pay for these later I'm sure. The service was very good, the trainee ran the show better than the trainer. Trainer however, the tables that cleared around us during our meal we're going through a. A a three-level covid clean with fabuloso, bleach or whatever cleaning products she could reach. Aerating from a spray bottle for all of those to enjoy. Huff a shot of fabuloso and you'll know what I mean. Beers could be cooler and filled to the top. Backyard has potential, but our experience left a lot to be desired. I started with the Prickly-Pom Margarita, which was actually really good--well-balanced and flavorful. That said, the serving size felt a little small, though that might just be the new normal these days. For food, I ordered the Korean BBQ sticky ribs during happy hour. The portion is three ribs, but only one of them was actually good. The other two were more like half-ribs--mostly fat and cartilage, barely edible. At $9, it felt overpriced. Maybe $5 would be fair, considering how much of it I couldn't eat. Even the flavor was just okay--nothing that stood out. The place was packed and clearly understaffed. Our waitress was doing her best under pressure, and you could tell she was overwhelmed. Whether it was due to call-outs or poor scheduling, the service delays were noticeable. From being seated to leaving took nearly two hours. It was 15-20 minutes before drinks arrived, and another 30 minutes for the food--despite ordering everything at once. What I believe was the manager came over to apologize--he had a broken hand and was talking so quietly that three out of four of us couldn't understand a word. With the music blaring, it was like hearing the teacher from Charlie Brown. The atmosphere overall wasn't bad, but the music was way too loud--we had to shout over it to hold a conversation. Bottom line: There's some good here, but the slow service, small portions, and loud environment held it back. Might be better on a slower night, but I'm not in a rush to return. read more

Horrible Brazilian Day event. My wife (who uses a cane to walk) had to stand for 3 hours because apparently, even though the advertisement says 3PM, people started to show at 2PM and everything filled up to the point there was no normal tables left. She had to stand at one of the bar height tables because that was all that was left, again for 3 hours. She is Brazilian and was really looking forward to "home cooked" food, which because they started early, THEY RAN OUT OF. We were there by 4PM, so they ran out of food IN THE FIRST HOUR!!! We basically paid $45 dollars for an entry fee to sit in a bar that played live Brazilian music. For another $95 (with 18% gratuity ALREADY FACTORED IN WITHOUT NOTICE), we got to enjoy nachos (Mexican) and carne asada fries (also Mexican). The lead singer would read out the description of the lottery tickets in Portuguese, and only read the numbers in English, so I had NO idea who was winning what. Face painting? Ha! There wasn't a single kid (or adult) there with face paint! Total lie. They really did hype this thing up as more than it actually was. Very poorly organized. The food was decent, and our waitress was friendly, but the service was honestly terrible. I can't remember the last time I left less than a 20% tip, but this experience warranted it. The pretzel and hot honey pizza was good. We also ordered the Asian chicken salad, but it came out completely dry with no dressing. When we asked about it, our waitress said the kitchen "couldn't find the dressing," so they just sent the salad out without it. Throughout the meal, we had to ask for just about everything- napkins, silverware, plates for the pizza, a to-go box. We were there for about an hour and a half in the middle of July and never got a refill. The restaurant wasn't busy either; most of the waitstaff seemed to be standing around the bar instead of checking on tables. If you're just stopping in for a quick bite, you'll probably be fine. But based on our experience, I wouldn't recommend it for a sit-down meal. Whether they're understaffed or the service just isn't a priority, the overall experience wasn't good. Disappointing because this place has potential. Probably just needs a management staff that puts customer service first. read more

I went to this Backyard in a random Thursday to try their ladies night line dancing. This place is decent sized, the set up/theme is literally like a backyard with picnic tables and outdoor furniture style seating. Lots of TVs if you're looking to catch your favorite game. One massive tv right in the middle of the room. They have line dancing every Thursday. They crowd was small and the area they had us was just right up front near the bar. We lined up and the teacher stood in the bar so we could see her and directed us. It was fun and engaging. I feel like they need an actual dance floor though as there want a whole lot of room to move around. We only had an appetizer while there and one drink. I was in town from San Diego for Thanksgiving and a wedding. We had a group of 8 adults and 4 kids with us and wanted a place to watch some football and grab lunch. To start, it was about about a 15 minute wait, which seemed like a good sign, busy! Must be great! The waitress seated us in a booth, handed us out menus and walked away. About 10-15 min. later, she took our drink order. She returned shortly to tell us they were out of the draft beer 2 of us requested. This happened with 2 types of beer. The drinks were eventually brought out, one being the wrong sized draft beer. Oh. well. We looked over the vast menu for a good 20 min, no sign of the waitress. Finally, we were able to order, One in our party requested a chicken salad (with grilled chicken, no fried- gluten allergy.) Someone else ordered nachos, no meat. We waited A WHILE for our food, 30-40 min... when it arrived.... The chicken salad was fried, not grilled, the nachos looked like they had plastic cheese melted on top (I'll let you judge,) and were burnt. We sent the nachos and salad back, the correct order of chicken salad and unburnt"ish" nachos made their way back to the table. Soon, we were all done and ready to leave. We browsed the menus, but realized no one had given us the happy hour menu, so we actually had to grab one from another empty table ourselves. We waited... and waited. We sat there for around 15 minutes, and not a single person came to greet us, ask about drinks, or acknowledge our table at all -- despite the abundance of staff clearly visible and not appearing busy. The bartender even made eye contact with us multiple times, yet still no one approached. At that point, it felt like our time was just being wasted, so we decided to leave. When we walked out, the hostesses watched us go and didn't say a word -- no apology, no "have a nice day," nothing. The whole experience was disappointing from start to finish, especially for a restaurant that was completely empty and fully staffed. The sport bar environment is awesome! The staff was friendly and mostly attentive (large crowds on Sunday). The food on the other hand left a lot to be desired.
