Undertow had been a thematic experience since we first attended in 2023. It's high end tiki drinks and set-dec combined. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and treats you right. Shout out to Hannah, Nia and Emma cir 2026, for making our anniversary stellar. They are extremely well versed in hospitality and we can't thank them enough for making this round special!!! It's time to update my review and give that 5th star that Undertow so deserves. I love the cocktails at this bar! I had previously given 4 stars simply due to not really liking the spots that are sitting at the port hole seats. I just didn't find them comfortable near the wall. I've now been back enough times to sit at the booths and bar top as well. Truly, it doesn't really matter where you sit, the service and cocktails are spot on but we all have our preferences. Today, we came in early around 430pm on a Friday, for a Valentine's cocktail (or two), and we were seated at the bar which I enjoy most at bars, in general. We had the pleasure of having Justice as our bartender and it was cool to chat with him, here and there. He was very attentive. Both rounds of cocktails were awesome. 1st round we had the Panther's Tooth and Angostura Colada. Pretty different flavors so it was good for sharing back and forth. Liked them both, very delicious. Second round unexpectedly blew me away a little bit. We ordered a classic Zombie as it's one of my favorite old school tiki drinks and a new drink on the menu Three Star Harbor, and I couldn't believe how much Ube flavor came through on it...so delicious! Justice mentioned the process for making that drink is a bit more involved by creating Ube powder, then a paste they essentially clarify the cocktail through. I loved it! Even the little Ube shortbread cookie as the garnish was good. I'm glad that on this visit the menu has been updated with new drinks for us to try. I love Tiki and enjoy Undertow every time. Such a cute little place. Came for the tiki bar and was delighted to see that it's 3 themed bars in one! A little pricey even compared to most tiki specialty bars but lots of fun. Second visit ever to Undertow; but first Visit to the Arcadia location. First off if you are going for a birthday, you MUST put it in your reservation, I'm going to leave what happens as a wonderful surprise. If you get adorned with a lei, immediately have a friend film it for you. This whole experience was incredible, the cocktails here are too notch, the bartenders are extremely friendly, and the environment is just awesome to hang out in. I can't wait to come back, I will fly back to Phoenix just to hang out with the bartender we had again seriously. This was an absolute 5 star experience, but my advice, skip the $50 Curse of the Jaguar cocktail. That is the only cocktails I have ever had here that was meh. My wife and I both didn't like it whatsoever. And this next part is for whoever is running the show here, and I mean this seriously. Undertow is one of my favorite bars in Phoenix. I love tiki bars, and I think this is one of the best around. Designed to look like you're on a 19th-century ship, Undertow is decorated with barrels, portholes, vines and other nautical/tropical decor. The drinks are not cheap, but they're inventive and strong. The Ghost of the Jaguar comes to you under a cool jaguar/skull thing. The Zombie packs a powerful punch. The Scorpion Bowl is fun to share with friends. The price point makes it a place I don't visit very often, but I go to Undertow whenever I can. read more

I have been to century grand a few times but hadn't made my way to undertow yet so we figured it was about time to cross that off the bucket list Great timing in my opinion, Christmas lights were up but they still had their fall menu, so it was a good mix of both worlds, I believe they're switching to their winter menu in a couple of days so I'll have to try that out Started with the pumpkin spice pina colada, then yuzu blackberry margarita, and then a rum barrel for a classic tiki drink. Upon entering, we were transported to the belly of an old ship with "windows" showing video loops of the ocean and sounds of waves hitting. The menu here is more playful & tropical and I wanted a drink that embodied exactly that. The Sunrise at Sea was sweet & tropical upfront, with gentler floral & creamy notes from the coconut and hibiscus, and a little bit of citrus from the lime and naranja. Very enjoyable cocktail that I could definitely imagine sipping at "sunrise at sea". The Short Patrol is one of their mocktails which was definitely sweeter from the banana and rum, the smokiness from the urga bieber was also a little too much for my liking. I like that they have non-alcoholic options but this one is not as fruity or light as some of their other options. Undertow is truly a well-run establishment. The service is excellent, and both the hosts and servers are incredibly kind and engaging. The drinks taste amazing, but what really stands out is how much they prioritize creating a positive experience for their customers. My friends and I were told it was last call and that the bar was starting to close down for the night. One of my friends said they didn't want anything else--then about ten minutes later decided they actually wanted three more drinks. Even though they were already cleaning and shutting down, the staff didn't hesitate. They happily went out of their way to make the drinks and made us feel taken care of. Went to Undertow for happy hour yesterday and had such a great experience. Shai, the manager, was incredibly attentive and made some great recommendations based on what I told her I liked. You can tell she genuinely cares about making sure guests have a good experience rather than just pushing certain drinks. Great drinks, terrible policies. The cocktails here are genuinely excellent. I'll give credit where it's due. But honestly, the experience is dragged down by policies that feel completely out of touch. When I go to a bar, I want to go to a bar. I don't want to make a reservation days in advance, put it on my credit card, and get charged a fee just for wanting a drink. On top of that, being pressured into a strict 90 minute time limit kills the entire vibe. A bar shouldn't feel like a dentist appointment! I've been to some of the top bars in the world, and plenty of them manage to serve world class cocktails without nickel and diming guests or rushing them out the door. So this isn't about quality;it's about priorities. Come on. Be better. If you want amazing cocktails without the nonsense, go to Highball instead. Incredible drinks, zero BS. Now that I am home and have processed everything from this weekend, I wanted to share some of the amazing adventures we had along the way. We visited some amazing places that are worth sharing. After the ceremony, Aaron made dinner reservations at the best taco place I have ever been too. Highly recommend the lobster tacos at Papi Gordos!! Following that amazing dinner we walked across the street to what I am calling a hidden gem !!! There is a little discrete building called Barter & Shake and inside it holds several immersive themed cocktail bars. One called Platform 18, Grey Hen RX, Undertoe and Sunny's Lounge. We choose Undertoe! This place has won so many awards including the best US cocktail bar for 2023, 2 time recipient of the international recognized top 50 Best bars in North America, the Prestigious Pinnacle Guide 2 pin award and so many more. The staff here were the nicest I have ever encounter. I walked in and because we came directly from the ceremony I still had on my cap and gown. The bartenders walked up to me with a Trombone and started playing pomp and circumstance and the whole place erupted in cheers! Of course I started to cry haha! We then were seated in our respective bar when we were greeted by two complementary shots and an enormous drink called the Scorpion Bowl which was on fire lol. At the end of our adventure the entire staff there signed a bottle of champagne and presented me with it! We then got to explore the empty venue and grab some amazing pictures of the theming. Spoiler alert, the owner used to work for Disney so it's no wonder I felt right at home. What a great way to end my day! We're in town for the weekend for my birthday. My wife made us reservations for the undertow. We arrived a little early and while they couldn't seat us until our reservation time, they did escort us to another bar in the building to wait. Our cocktails there were great, but once we sat in the undertow we were immediately transported to high seas! Our host sat us and introduced us to EVERYONE who would be helping us, made sure I was properly leid, and gave me a vices and virtues cocktail as a birthday present. It was tremendous. We ordered our first round from Justice, our server, he had us play pirates dice, which we won a shot for the bar! Everyone cheered, we loved our first round, then the host dropped off a birthday card signed by the entire staff. After another round of the best tiki drinks, someone else won shots for the bar, apparently it was unheard of. They made sure we had some small souvenirs to take home, but the memories will last forever. Justice was wonderful all night, along with the rest of the staff, the vibes were up, the drinks were some of the best we ever had, but the entire experience won't easily be beat. Being a Navy veteran I was excited to check this place out. The website says "The environment whisks guests away on a 90-minute worldly journey in the belly of a spice trader's turn-of-the-century Clipper ship, which follows the adventures of our revered Captain John Mallory and his crew. UnderTow's signature décor and special effects have been custom-created by various commissioned artists" so of course I thought we were in for an adventure. Sadly disappointing. I think the 90 minute time frame is because the place is small and they need to turn over the seats and keep guests moving. Yes, the decor was nautical and the few "portholes" were cool but from our assigned seats at the bar we didn't get much of a view. There were occasional flashes of light where they said we were "going through a storm" but other than that nothing too exciting. The drinks were great yet pricey. We ordered the Chains To the Mast shot that came in a cute little copper shot glass. The shot itself was tasty but there was a definite metallic aftertaste. The El Diablo and Blue Hawaii were very well made. It was just an ok experience. The main highlight was the attentive staff and quality bartenders. My son invited us here as a surprise. It seems like it's hard to make a reservation. So be sure to do it in advance. The entrance is the same place as Central Grand. There's a free parking lot around the place. Inside Undertow, there is a full bar and booths, and only fewer seats on the side, it's not large place. It was filled up quickly. It's pretty noisy. Sometimes there's lightning, and you can see the tsunami through the window on the wall. It's quite enjoyable. I ordered Shapen and Sleep from Non-alcoholic menu because I can't drink alcohol. My husband ordered Mai Tai, and my son ordered In the Honor of Nameless Days. After that, we ordered various cocktails, and they all tasted fantastic! And the price was also high $$$. Walking in this bar we loved the pirate theme. Every so often the windows would show an attack by pirates, which added to the ambiance. The bartenders were great. I was specifically appreciative of the female bartender working who took the time to re-explain the menu when I couldn't hear her the first time due to my hearing challenges. The drinks were amazing and well made. I'll have to go again to try some other ones. There were just too many good drinks to check out. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the bar stools were not comfortable and I ended up standing up. This is not our first time at Undertow, but we recently received an email letting is know there is a new menu. The theme is now Mexican pirates. Everything in the bar looks the same, except the "view" from the porthole windows i(at least where we were sitting) s a Mayan temple. The music is also kind of Mayan sounding. They've added some food (munchies, not meals) and carbonated cocktails. We didn't have either. We ordered the Mamay Sapote, a yummy cocktail with two kinds rum, orange liqueor, macadamia nut, and white chocolate, and a classic Zombie. Both were delish! The drinks are great, but the atmosphere is really a huge party of the experience. A great place for a fun drink. Keep in mind that you have to secure your reservation with a credit card. The $12 per person deposit is applied to your bill, but the $6 fee is not. Also they add a 4% staff benefits fee. read more

Undertow is always a good time and always has great vibes. I went to the previous location under Sip and I'm so glad they've relocated and expanded since I live closer to the Gilbert location now. Both locations looks the exact same - small, intimate areas that have a lot of character per square inch. You're never bored looking around because there's always something to look at or watch, especially if you're near a porthole. They don't offer meals but it was late so I got their little trail mix of dried fruits, corn nuts, and macademia nuts with seasoning mixed in. Loved the little spice I got mixed with my Blue Hawaiian cocktail. The service was fast and friendly, someone was always around pouring water out of a magic lamp. This place is crazy! Felt like I was in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie or something. Absolute over the top experience. And I thrived in every second of it. I had a couple beverages. Couldn't tell you the name of them, but the magic they perform with rum is exemplary. I'm running out of vocabulary words trying to describe the exhilaration this bar brings. Every 15 minutes they simulate *the sound* of a rain storm. It was so symphonic and life-like, I damn near covered my head so I wouldn't get wet. If you gotta hot date, take em here.
