Okay so ambiance here is like a million stars! They had like some kind of a big house and an old style phone booth, a wine cellar entrance to the place, and a really neat entrance with a big logo of the under tow on it. The wait time wasn't bad either considering it was a weekend when we went. The even bigger wow factor is when you go downstairs you'd never expect you're about to get on what looks like a ship underwater. Talk about embracing the tiki vibe, this place really did that and more! They had port holes that looked like the ocean was outside, all kinds of near decor and lighting and fixtures. It is an experience, if for nothing else you guys have got to come here just to see this for yourself. The scorpion bowl was good, the back scratcher drink was decent too, but most of the drinks we tried weren't our favorite, the ambiance however really made up for that. We've gone to the undertow in Gilbert and this was a very similar experience. The people are so nice in there and set to make your experience a memorable once. The drinks are so great, and it's really the ambiance that sets it apart from other bars. The theme is you're below deck on a boat that seems to be sailing around the Polynesia islands. There's a volcano in one of the portholes, that moves around to different portholes suggesting you're moving! We chose this place because we had a tropical island theme for our wedding and it was our wedding anniversary, and what better way to celebrate a tropical theme than with tiki style cocktails. We loved it! It's best to make reservations, there's more information on the website, but they are 90 minute reservations. This experience is spectacular. We go to a lot of tiki bars and opt for the strongest, most rum-forward drinks, but no drink has ever been as strong as those served at Undertow! The design is great: stepping in, the non-leveled walls, portholes, and decor convince you that you're inside a ship. The atmosphere is lively - owing to its demand and reservation policy. There were four of us and we sat at the bar which made conversation difficult but gave us the best atmosphere. We sampled a lot of drinks... but for first-timers, I recommend (as I do for any tiki bar), the Zombie or Mai Tai. The coolest thing about the Undertow menu that stands out from other bars is that the drinks are credited to the year and original mixer which makes it a full-on learning experience and brings so much more to the drinks! I asked a member of staff to recommend something and he chose the "Shadows and Ghosts" from the Sour menu, a drink that was created at Undertow. I would have never ordered it for myself, and I loved it! It was super refreshing and complex. Undertow scored major points for having such a well-thought out and dedicated Non-Alcoholic Cocktail section. Whether you're sober, the designated driver, or simply looking for something without alcohol, Undertow's Non-Alcoholic Cocktails are as complex and delicious as the classic cocktails. My mom - who was not drinking that night - was planning on getting one N.A. cocktail and then moving onto sparkling water, but she loved it so much that she got three! Absolutely loved this bar! They have such a great concept as the other bars in the same building. Highly recommend making reservations beforehand. Once we were there, it wasn't that long of a wait to be sat. I will say, the seating area is a little bit cramped as you're so close to the bar even though we were sat at a table by the "windows". What ruined the vibe was the hostess coming to tell us "you have 30 minutes left", and then 20 minutes later (with an almost empty bar) coming to tell us that we needed to leave because someone else was coming in. We did say that we felt the "storm" experience could have been a little more dramatic with additional technical enhancements. Also the fog machine was not working at the time. Decided to set sail and try out the Undertow. We love going and trying out all the speakeasy's around town. This one caught our attention due to be in the spirit of Halloween themed. When you check in at the counter you have that Halloween vibe. But once's you get onboard there is no Halloween decor or Halloween menu! Rum is my preferred/primary spirit, so I was surprised to find most of the drinks had mixes of several liquors. Not thrilled about that since being well beyond my 20s mixing liquors is a general no-no. I was also disappointed to see Bacardi included in any drink at these prices. Ultimately my drinks were good. UT Rum Barrel had me fairly tipsy quick and I'm not a light weight. It was good if not especially unique. Bartender convinced me to try their unconventional Mai Tai. I don't like Mai Tais but she was right in that it was different, but it was incredibly strong and lacked much flavor other than booze. Had a good time, but been to better. read more

So while my wife and I were browsing a craft fair at a recent tiki festival, a guy had asked us if we had been to Undertow. We are new to all of us and so just stared blankly at him. He couldn't believe we had not heard of Undertow and told us to see if we could get a reservation to this bar and go there ASAP. So I looked on my phone and luckily found a reservation spot for that night. Upon arriving, we were whisked to a place that looked more like something you would find in Disney World then the Phoenix area. This bar offers three different experiences to try out and we decided to go to the wooden ship theme. If you are curious, the experience is worth the price, very immersive and greatly detailed. This place is what makes a classic tiki bar so fun. Dark, fully themed, great drink list, awesome bartenders, and just a fun ambiance all around. The drink menu here is huge, like a small book kind of big. It took some time for us to decide but we were happy with all of our drinks. The Missionary Downfall I had was probably the best one I have ever had. So good. Every drink was packed full of fresh fruit, spices, and mint which just boosted everything. Everything behind the bar looked to be homemade including the syrups, juices, etc. which made the price we paid well worth it. The best part was watching the expertise of the bar tenders. They were so talented. I watched one of the girls make 6 drinks side by side all at once. She was so skilled and focused. No wonder she won battle of the bartenders the next day at our tiki event. Very cool. It might be hard to get, but if you can get a reservation, this place is worth a visit. Our group of six was placed in a small booth that didn't comfortably fit everyone, leaving one of us standing for part of the visit. It also took nearly 15 minutes before we were able to place our order, which felt a bit long considering how early we arrived and that there is a 90 minute reservation. The atmosphere could use some fine-tuning--despite the lobby being nicely air conditioned, the main space was noticeably warm. Our water glasses were sweating so much that condensation ran off the table onto my dress. We also noticed some stray trash and extra menus stashed behind the set props near our table, which gave things a slightly cluttered feel. We ended up placing our own menus back there because no one came to collect them, because the vibe seemed to be encouraging guests to keep ordering. Our server was friendly, but was also managing the bar, which meant service was a bit stretched. The trail mix, while a fun touch, felt overpriced for what it was and would be better as a complimentary snack. The drink menu itself was fun and creative--definitely a highlight--but the required deposit felt a little steep given the overall execution. For an immersive, themed experience, a more engaging host or a "ship captain" on the mic could really tie it all together. Lastly, we were excited to try the rum barrel, but it arrived in a standard glass and they didn't have signature glassware they want to up charge you with. Undertow is part of this three-themed-bar complex called Century Grand, which has two other themed bars - Grey Hen and Platform 18. Platform 18 is a train car, and Grey Hen is a New Orleans themed one. Undertow, of course, is a tiki bar. And it's very well done. They have these portholes that have images on the outside like you are actually on a ship. My favorite part was probably the novella of a menu they have, is sort of like a ship manifest or captain's log, which includes menu items, spirits, glossary of ingredients and spirits (at least some of which is copy pasta from Wikipedia, like the entry on Dragon's Blood), and a random chapter of a novel with beautiful pictures and a heart wrenching story involving a giant dodo. Overall, really cool experience. Parking is easy - lot parking. I was hoping for a themed bathroom as well, but no such luck. A lovely start to 2024, we loved this belly of a sailing ship themed tiki bar. I was first introduced to them years ago, just across the parking lot in another building before they moved into century grand building, and as much as I don't like making reservations, it's about the only way you're going to get a spot here at a desirable time, so do yourself a favor and get on their list, don't try to do a walk up and expect a seat to be available, even on a Wednesday and especially a weekend. Their specialty menu is chock full of passion fruit, pineapple, lime and rum among other things, everything is garnished to look amazing, smell amazing and taste amazing. Only 4 people at the bar and our party of 3 asked if we could sit in one of the empty booths. While we had reservations and were placed at the bar nobody reserved the booth and when we asked to move the host said he'd "see about it" and never returned. The barstools were slippery and uncomfortable so had we moved and been cozy the drinks were likely to be more enjoyable and we would have stayed. Bartender didn't engage with us at all, although he was nice when he eventually gave us our drinks and they were pretty. We had our one drink and left. I'd recommend Platform 18 for the ambiance, drinks, and energy. read more

My family was in town and my little cousin was looking for an adventure He absolutely loves tiki and this was right up his alley. Keep in mind this is a venue designed to entertain. They have a strict 90 min rule so come prepared to have an experience but there's no staying over 90 min. They also no longer have food as an option so you'll need to hit up another restaurant to grab a bite. The drink menu is vast but your servers are there to guide you through and help you choose the best option.
