I love Strongwater in Anaheim and they did a swap with Undertow. I had to stop in on my 1 day stay in Phoenix. So I'm not giving it 5 stars. It's not because there's no food. They told us upfront go eat elsewhere. No it's not the drinks. They're great! Beautiful presentation! It's me reviewing the entire package, from reservations to final bill. Here's a few things to consider here: - you prepay your drinks up front with a service fee that you won't see when you finalize payment. That right we prepaid a $18 service fee that's not applied to the final bill - The service is rushed. It's packed. They actually tell you when you have 30 minutes left and they do tell you to wrap things up. It's only a Thursday night too! - it's loud. If you're a party of 4 sitting at the bar, persons 1 and 4 will never hear each other. - When you get the final bill, only some part of the prepaid bill is applied, plus the bill gets another staff fee and tip is not included. It's not a big deal but I'm annoyed about being nickel and dimed on almost $50 on fees - which is about 2 1/2 drinks right there. (See photos I posted). How is it the $18 service fee is not part of the tip? If so, we paid $50 in tip then!! This is a midweek visit-- I can't imagine weekends! I met up with my friend on a Thursday night at 8:30. Originally we had a party for 6, but it became 4 and we adjusted it. Had I known that the seats were going to be at the bar, maybe I wouldn't have modified it and played dumb at check in. It's a beautiful place but IMHO it's a fire hazard. Wall to wall people and there's literally no walking space. I only saw the room to the right of the hostess so I can't tell you what the other 2 rooms looked like. From a quick glance it looked cramped as well. I get it that it's the hippest place right now, tons of IG posts and the drinks are damn good. But maybe, just maybe, don't make the customers feel grateful they get 90 minutes at your place and actually let them enjoy the brilliance of your bar? Being told I have 30 minutes left isn't that welcoming. I truly wanted to be a 4+star but taking into account the rushed service, and the extent of being "fee" to death (and those reading this, it's not my first tiki bar I've been to! I understand why I'm paying the fees) I cannot rave about this like an adolescence 21 year old yelper. read more

Love this bar! Century grand hosts three speakeasy type bars and right next door is Sip which also hosts the 36 below bar. We love the extensive menu of drinks at this bar and they are about to change parts of it in May. The drinks are always strong and delicious and a good mix! Bar tenders are always super friend and helpful and strike up good conversation. The theme of the ship is so awesome and the decor is too! Upon entering there are two sides. One is Undertow and the other side on the left is HenRx with a unique waiting area. You definitely feel like you get transported to below deck and you're at sea. Tiki bars are always great. Their menu was like a whole book for their cocktails. Cool idea but definitely too dark to read through it. I forgot the name of the drink I got but it was a blended fruity concoction - 4/5. Great spot for drinks before dinner or date night! It's our first time there and other than the seats being a little uncomfortable for a guy my size, it was good. The drink menu was terrific. Having been to Platform 18 several times in the same building my partner, friends, cousin and I couldn't wait to try Undertow and WOW! Same deal they take your credit card and have a charge that gets deducted from your bill and your reservation is about 1.5 hours. When I say it's like drinking behind the scenes of pirates of the Caribbean is an understatement....the decor the sounds the smell the murky almost fog machine atmosphere were impeccable, we had so many different drinks between the group I can barely remember their names and the intricate ingredients (always use a ride share!) from the basic Mai Tai to the blue Hawaii and everything in between A+ they have ingredients that you are like "do they work well together" and they do ! Some drinks are smoking some are adorned with tropical fruit and flowers some have a chili sauce around the rim....some we liked more than others but what an experience!! And our server was amazing, be prepared it takes a little time to get your drinks and we were watching the bartender create all these different concoctions with so many ingredients you'll understand why! read more

I was really looking forward to this cocktail bar experience after doing Platform18 last year. While the drinks were delicious and the ambience was cool, to label this as a "90 minute immersive experience" is not accurate. The bar is extremely small and unless you are one of the lucky pairs near one of the windows you really don't get the effect of being on a ship. To be quite honest, it's underwhelming. They really should call this what it is.. a cool cocktail bar. The ONLY experience we had was at one point the lights went out, there was thunder and what appeared to be lightening but that was it. An entire 90 mins and that was the extent of he experience. Don't get me wrong, I think everyone should at least check this spot out but do not have high expectations on the "experience" part. This is the second time I have visited this location. My husband had the Bourbon Special and The Book of Hâo. I had the Henderson's Last Journey and the Silhouette of Man. One of my favorite places in Arizona. The perfect blend of tiki bar and escapism. Take 90 minutes and get lost in the ambiance. You don't feel like you're in a bar. Undertow is inside of the century grand building which also hosts 2 other themed craft cocktail bars. Don't let the outside fool you as it looks like a plain building. My husband and I came here on a Sunday evening. It wasn't overly busy. We did have a reservation but looked like there was a few open spots for those who didn't. Upon entrance we ended up having to wait a few minutes past our time to enter. The hostess was generous and tacked on a good amount of time for us to stay past the 90 minutes. She was very friendly and accommodating. Initially we sat by the portal window, but the seats are very close to the side and there wasn't enough space for my husbands shoulders. We ended up moving to the bar area to sit and that was more comfortable. The drinks are largely gin/rum based. They are strong and very well done! We had fun drinking out the volcano. Have gone here so many times and have tried a lot of different drink menus. Obviously the pirate vibes are a must try. This is the perfect place to take your adult friends for a fun night. The drinks are always on point and they have a variety of flavors. A friend of mine didn't like a drink she got because it was spicy(which the menu mentions and she didn't read) and they refunded her the drink. That is a great service. Centry Grand is cool place. We have tried Platform 18 and now Undertow. Both were great! I liked them equally and would go back in a second. So, let me start by saying I had an issue with the place - way too small of a space, like uncomfortably small, but the reason for the full stars is the staff and ambiance. I'm not into tiki bars, I went with my mother who is a tiki freak. If you sit at any of the tall tables, you get a porthole with moving images - sure the graphics are like that of a PS3, but that's kinda charming? But the bartender we got that night was superb. Not only was he fun and kind, he went out of his way to find the last tiki mug where only 100 were made when Tiki Oasis had just ended in Arizona, and gave her the last one despite it not having box. Maybe selling box less mugs is typical at tiki bars ‍ but places I frequent wouldn't sell something with no box. He also gave her a ton of swag - coasters and stuff like that. They seemed to have no issue with people walking around and snapping photos (a patron did, but this isn't about him). A very fun experience. The drinks were very very good and creative but I am a lightweight and after 2 cocktails I wasn't even buzzed. Seems like the drinks have a lot of ice and not so much alcohol. Disappointed as drinks range from $12-$22. The ambiance was fun but not as expected vs all the social media posts that make it seem pretty over the top. Still - it was worth taking out of town guests for a treat. I don't think I'd go to just have some craft cocktails. I didn't mind paying the $12 per person ( 4 of us went) upfront fee (taken off first order) to hold the reservation - but the $3 per person non-refundable reservation fee when booking online was confusing. Is that for tip? And there was an additional tax on the bill for the servers. I tip generously so not sure what the service charge was for. So in total I paid $15 for the experience on top of the drinks plus a hefty tip for the server. Wow what an experience. This building has no signs and no outward indication of the experience that lies within. We had a reservation for 13. That deal was a bit of a pain because f the size of our party but they did accomadte us by having to sign a contract and pay in advance. Other than that everything else was smooth sailing. Ambiance felt like you were in the belly of a tiki ship which aligns with the speakeasy feel of the place. The place is small and intimate and the place was at capacity so the first drink we had to wait a bit but the crafmanship that went into making it made it worth the wait. Their drink menu is EXTENSIVE. I'm not kidding. I couldn't begin to tell you how many cocktails they had. Maybe 100. And the staff is well versed on seems to be all of them. We ran the plethora of the menu. Each person had 3 totally different drinks. My favorite was called Treachorous Seas, It has coconut Chai Tea unfused Ketel One vodka, pineapple juice, Heirloom Genepy (your guess is as good as mine about what this is), lime jiuce and bitters. It wasn't too sweet or too dry. I loved this cocktail so much I wish I would have had it first and drank it the entire time. The others were great too but this one rocked my world. Fun, creative place. Friendly staff. Cool concept. Well made. Unique drink selection. We really enjoyed our time there. Felt the drinks were a little pricey and wish they allowed walk-ins since we were coming from Tucson and traffic was bad that day. But we made our reservation. U have to pay twenty dollars per person to hold the table, which goes towards your tab. Since the drinks are approximately twenty dollars each it works out. I would go to some of their other themed bars because of the cool concept, but I probably would not visit this place more than the one time. Pictures alone of UnderTow had us making plans to come here while in Phoenix! First off, make a reservation... it gets busy. Plus, it gives you a better chance to sit by one of the 'moving' windows (video generated to make you feel like you are boozing away in the bottom of a ship!) We sat at the bar and the experience was just as cool, though. There are a lot of cool design aspects to this place - things that move on the walls, smoke that'll come from the ceiling every once in a while... I kept saying how I felt like I was waiting for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World! The atmosphere is the main reason to come, no doubt. Wow! UnderTow is a truly immersive and fun escape that I haven't seen anything like in Arizona. From the moment you step in the door of the Century Grand, you know it's going to be something special. Shy of actually getting on a submarine or boat, the experience whisks you away on a seafaring excursion, filled with the lights, sounds, and visual effects of being on a trading vessel in the East Indies. If you're not careful, the cocktails will have you looking for your land legs on the way back to the parking lot! UnderTow is one of three themed bars at Century Grand. The others are Grey Hen Rx (a New-Orleans apothecary theme), and Platform 18, which is a cool immersive experience that emulates a Western railcar. Following the text message instructions, we checked in at the Century Grand and waited in the lobby area. This space is adjacent to the other bars, so you can peak in to see what they're all about. Lots of fun energy in this place as everyone is excited to start their adventures. We made our way to the UnderTow bar, and ordered several tiki-themed cocktails. The most notable being the Icy Mast, a vodka based drink that serves 3-4 people. It comes out in flames, which got a fun reaction from everyone around. We also saw another Manhattan-style cocktail served under a smoky bowl. There's so many drinks on the menu and it's helpful to get the input from your bartender to narrow down a selection. For visual effects, this place has it all! The "weather" shifts throughout the night, which is represented by sounds of thunder and flashes of lighting. The Portholes, which can be seen from the bar, show the effects of the waves on nearby ships and islands. It feels very much like an amusement ride without any actual movement, so you won't spill your drinks. Be sure to make reservations in advance! You can book up to 7 days in advance for a 90 minute "ride." Depending on if you sit at the bar, or a porthole table, there's a pre-paid beverage charge. Supposedly, there is a second UnderTow location coming to Gilbert, and I can't wait! In the meantime, we plan to be back and check out the other two bars, and hope to bring along a few friends next time. read more

The cocktail menu is extensive and has a good variety of options depending on your palate. The drinks run a little pricy, you're looking at $16 - $22 per cocktail; but they are strong! Two drinks is enough to get me where I need to be. The real selling point here is the ambiance though. I've been to a few tiki bars and UnderTow was by far the best! The aesthetic is defiantly there but the drinks were the stars. I usually am not the biggest fan of tiki drinks in general just because they are so overly sweet...plus rum isn't my favorite. There were so many options other than rum! I've order a Chi Chi before but not like theirs, they use a chili vodka which made the whole drink for me. Refreshing and peppery at the same time. I'm a big mezcal drinker also so I ordered the Silhouette of a Man. Again not overly sweet at all and the mezcal flavor was there. You do have to make a reservation from what I understand, ours was from 6pm-7:30pm. They stick to that 90 minutes. I wouldn't suggest this spot for large groups either since its overall small. From the animated portholes all the way to the music you will feel transported to another time and place. You can tell how thoughtful they were in crafting the space, the decor, and the cocktails.
