We weren't sure what to expect when one of our favorite bars closed for almost a month. Happy to report we went to the reopening Thursday night and the place was full. Captain Alex had things running smoothly with the help of Captain Dave (formally of Coabana) The decor is the same, and the drink menu is a bit smaller - 8 signature cocktails and 9 tiki classics. The back page of the menu was all food items. The three cocktails we had were boozy, yet perfectly balanced. The flavors of the drinks were un mistakable, making them more pronounced, and quite frankly, just plain delicious! Glad The Captains Cabin is back, and you can bet we'll be stopping by to say hi to Captain Alex and Captain Dave and enjoy more great tiki cocktails. read more

This tiki bar is attached to a restaurant (Hula, modern Hawaiian cuisine) but it's worth a standalone visit. Sometimes there's a wait - it seats only about 25 or so, but the cocktails are fabulous, and the bartender / mixologist can make you something to your tastes as well. This place was long time on my list to try for Tiki cocktails in the Valley. I had recently been in West Hollywood and happened upon a tiki bar named Lucky Tiki where I talked to a fellow Tiki lover and he asked if I had been to Captain's Cabin in Phx. I told him it's on the list but I decided to go since it keeps getting pushed back. This bar is located adjacent to Hula's Tiki Restaurant which has yummy food and a standard tiki bar but nothing amazing. If you want legit tiki drinks hop next door under the red light. We met bartender Henry who will be the more present guy behind the bar, he said that Captain Dave is doing other projects. Henry was great, and we hoped to chat with the Captain himself, but maybe at a pop up event at another place. Our drinks were beautiful, delicious, and stiff. Great place for a cool vibe and a fancy cocktail. Interior is decorated with a moody, nautical theme. I got the macadamia chi chi and would recommend. Seating is limited so be aware. The Cabin is like a speakeasy in a tiki bar with a nautical twist. A small intimate place, perfect for kicking back and relaxing. Entwined next to Hulas Modern tiki. A true mixologist behind the bar stirs and shakes the perfect chemical combinations. They feature a vast array of drink concoctions. Some famous, some you've never heard of. If you want fast and cheap, this is not your place. If you want unique drinks, with attention to detail then by all means stop in. I've been here once and it was incredible. Our server was kind, the vibe was cool, and the drinks were DELICIOUS. I tried to go this evening, a Saturday at 8:45pm, the normal time to go to a bar I think. The bartender was a young woman with long black hair, very pretty. I walked in, the place was empty. So I said "hey, are you open!" "Ya" She never said another word. Our group sat down and looked over the menu, she didn't greet us, didn't offer waters, didn't leave her post behind the bar. We left. This is a very welcoming and cozy bar. Went here on a date. We sat at the bar. David is awesome and made my date a special drink using bourbon. He loved it! I had the Cobra's Fang and had to control myself from wanting to sip all at once. Delicious and satisfying tiki drink. My date then ordered an old fashioned cocktail and let me try it. Such a cute little speakeasy/tiki bar! Dim lights and great decor. There is enough seating for maybe 20 people, and they don't take reservations. I imagine it may get a bit crowded on weekends. We went on a Thursday evening and there were just 2 seats left when we arrived. People came and went during the time we were there, so someone looking for seats could have just waited a bit and gotten one. Pretty extensive drink menu. The drinks are tasty, and the presentation is great. Captain Dave even made my mai tai prettier with a flower when I asked! Small bites are also available. Probably an unpopular opinion as people love AC around here, and maybe we were sitting right where the air was blowing, but the AC kept kicking in and I was cold. The drinks were good and not too expensive especially for their size. I love their look and how fun all the drinks were, very good tasting and fun for pictures. The Captain/bartender was super friendly and attentive, he made it a point to connect with each guest and was talking to patrons. I liked the aesthetic of the place, very much a tiki bar with a ship theme which was fun. Similar menu to Hula's if not the exact same. The space was also a bit hot and felt a little stuffy but that can be expected from a small space. When we came in, it was our first time and since there is no hostess, only the captain, we felt a little awkward and unsure of what to do or if we should sit ourselves. That was probably the only bad part. They have seats at the bar and some booth areas as well. Probably no more than 15 people or so could fit in there comfortably so it's kind of nice to have the space that's intimate and unique. Every time I stop in, I think "I should come here more often." This is a tiki lover's paradise in a quiet, intimate setting. The menu includes signature drinks, tiki classics, and a voluminous spirit list. Captain David, the bartender, knows what he's doing and gives great recommendations so the variety isn't overwhelming, even if you're not the biggest tiki aficionado. We wanted Halloween vibes and it totally delivered, there was eerie red lighting, fake spiderwebs and skulls on the bar area plus a seasonal drink menu. The bartender, David, was very cool and kept it classy with his captain's hat. I had the Treacherous Waters, per David's recommendation, while my friend ordered Queen Anne's Revenge. He takes your drink and food orders, makes the drinks, grabs your food from the kitchen, delivers it to you, cashes you out, and cleans the tables - alone. Captain does a great job managing everything, major props. Loved my Ava's Kingdom, has rum, amaro, coconut, strawberry, lime, pineapple, and cardamom. Extremely well-balanced. I would describe it as a much smaller, more quaint version of Hula's, which is next door and shares owners (and probably more). Captain David handles everything - from taking your order to making your drinks to settling up your check. He is awesome, quick, personable, and somehow never seems overwhelmed! I tried the Pi-Yi, which was absolutely incredible! I love passionfruit and the passionfruit flavor shines through in the Pi-Yi, along with all of that wonderful delicious alcohol!
