Let me preface with I visited Lacuna on First Friday and that was probably my first mistake. There were a lot of people standing around, chatting, and for the most part, patrons were friendly and in a great mood. Seems like it could be a great community space and I so wish this first experience was positive. I have had kava on my own, but never in this sort of setting. Upon entrance, the music was VERY loud with the DJ being on top of the bathroom/in the middle of the space. I ordered my drink (as above mango with Fijian kava). I was asked if I wanted to double up the kava in which I said no. I paid with a card and had a feeling that I was being overcharged. The person taking my order did not share my total to me, nor did she offer me a receipt. I did not ask for this information, so yeah, that was on me for not speaking up in the moment. After receiving my drink, I tried to check my bank account for the charge but service was not allowing me to do so. When I got home, I was able to check and saw that I was overcharged by $5-6. I acknowledge that it was loud and there was a lot going on, so this could have been an honest mistake, but my cup also did not have a double serving indicated so I know that I was not misheard. The drink was fine (very sweet/juicy) but I don't think this is my sort of kava space. I reached out to Lacuna (called twice and emailed) and did not get a response. $5-6 is not a big deal in the grand scheme, but to me, it was offputting and poor integrity. Even worst that I couldn't even get a response in the generous opportunities that I provided them to do so. read more

This spot is my happy place. I love this kava bar and the kavatenders that work there. Kenzie and Jamie rock!!! They always know how to make my day. long time fan of Lacuna! found this place several years ago when looking for alternatives to alcohol. also went to their grand opening in Sedona, beautiful location and store. it had been awhile since i've last visited and was in the area. decided to walk over and stop in and was not disappointed. the new downtown Lacuna location is absolutely beautiful and very vibey. similar to the old one but more space, love! the bartender was very friendly and made me a delicious Prickly Pear Limeade with red kratom and i paired it with a side of raw Vanuatu kava. was very relaxed while i hung out there and will definitely be returning for happy hour! my only concern/wish is to have a nutritional menu available for those who are conscious about calories, sugar etc. consumed. would be nice to have that information. overall i've met some really cool open minded people through Lacuna and am looking forward to returning more often! read more

My best friend took me here, and I fell in love with this place! Naturally when you like something you want to share it with others, so I decided to tell my little brother about it while he was here visiting from out of town. We were so excited to go in. We were smiling and all giddy, but when we walked in it was all dark inside and I had never seen it so empty inside. This night a mixer with dreadlocks was behind the counter [he did not greet us], so we decided to greet him [he never responded to us] we sit at the counter as we proceeded to look discussing our perspective orders [he still hasn't spoken to us] must've over heard us & continues to tell us "well, you better look at that menu again, we're out of CBD WINE& out of taro." You'd think he would have suggested a different item that was similar, but it was as if this guy just didn't want to be bothered to work, with us, or extremely angry at the world. My brother and I instantaneously both got up from our chairs. The tension/awkwardness in the air was so thick we totally just left. When we got outside my little brother says "did you feel that, did that just happen?" Totally embarrassing to take someone some where you talk up for them to be treated like this for their first experience. It seems ever since this night "taro root" is never there or they NEVER have it anymore! After trying 3-4x showing up from north Phoenix [30-40 mins away] I now call every time before I go all that way. That's ridiculous! I just don't get how you can continuously run out of something [especially if it's so popular with your customer base]? Just order more of that if you serve this more than anything?! They use to garnish the drinks with pineapple, I haven't seen that in a minute. I loved this place when it was more on point, but now it's just hit or miss if they even have what you want. The low key chill vibe was just what I was looking for on a Sunday evening. I had a couple hours to waste waiting to pick up my daughter nearby. I found Lacuna! A great spot for a solo person or a group. I was solo and thankful for a safe later night place to hang out. I took a chance and ordered a relaxing tea. I'm so happy I discovered this place. I came to check it out a few weeks ago and I've probably gone at least five times since then. Everyone that works here is really nice. They always play good music and a couple times I've been (on weekend nights) they have really good DJs which make it extra fun. I've tried the Kratom and Kava samplers. Both are awesome. I've also tried the Arizona sunset shots which are a crowd favorite apparently. And I have tried a few of the random fruity drinks they offer. I have yet to dislike anything I've tried. I came here with a couple of friends and it was our first time here and the first time trying Kava and Kratom. Our kavatender was awesome. She was very personable, friendly, and helped us all figure out what types of drinks we would like, with samples. There were so many educational items on the screen along with a peaceful painting video to watch. It was nice to watch the painting video while relaxing with the kava drink effects. I think I need more kava to see if I can get more calm. I felt some calm though I felt the kratom sample made me feel more jittery. I recommend this all natural bar to anyone who needs to calm down and release tension and stress. I've been here twice. Because it's in a great location, this would be THE place for Kava if the music were more ambient. It's cozy--and that means it's too small for a live band with amplifiers. Since it's so small, it's always crowded, so maybe they don't need the rest of our business anyway. It's crazy loud (but it's not a dance venue). We have to go outside to really talk and even then we have to pay really close attention or read lips. In a place where one goes for a soothing experience to re-center, why do we need loud music vibrating through our bones? There are already so many other places for that. Such a high volume isn't very relaxing, and it actually keeps you on edge! It's such a pity, really. Everyone is friendly there, the drinks are top-notch, and the atmosphere is otherwise amazing. Maybe somebody there will read this and give ambient music a try-- at least one night per week, come on, give us a break. Call it Smooth Brew Sunday with smooth jazz or something. I'll say it: There's a lot of pressure these days to "be fine" with loud music and just accept it as a given. That needs to change. Not only is it bad for those tiny fibers in our ears that we can't get back once their destroyed (There's no lasik surgery for the ears!) but noise pollution is also bad for our brains and skeletons. But Kava solves everything else, so at least there's that! :) read more

I had the Love Bug and would definitely get it again! It was a delicious, cool, non-alcoholic drink. I didn't notice any effect, but definitely enjoyed it. Lacuna is a very inclusive establishment, but not everyone who came inside has the same hygiene standards, and one such gentleman had his poor filthy dog with him on a makeshift leash. I stopped in for the first time ever. I knew nothing about the place or what they sold I just knew they carried good vegan pastries. The staff member explained the different types of drinks in detail and gave my friend and I samples. I found the sample drinks to be gross. Definitely not my style. I bought a pack of 2 kava gingerbread sandwich cookies. My friend and I each ate one on the walk back to work and they were delicious. I would recommend for the pastries. First off, I hail from what I consider the kava capital of the States, Tampa Bay so this review may feel skewed to some. Upon arrival in town an acquaintance told me about this place. Of course, I decided to stop in and see what the hype was about. Accessing the establishment is easy , as it's on a street corner. Upon walking up you will notice a nice outdoor seating area. Perfect for those with dogs. Inside, is small, yet a semi cozy vibe. I was here twice. Both times I order a yellow Kratom and the second time I also order kava "shells". The Kratom is weak. I'm not sure why this is. The portion is small (for a double) therefore making it the most expensive Kratom I have ever purchased from a kava bar anywhere in the country. The kava, which is not my go to, was excellent. I caught a special so the price was extremely reasonable. 3 stars for the lackluster Kratom. 4 stars for the vibe and kava.
