I'm a big tequila fan & my crew that night with me is in the same boat or they will do some mezcal. The outside patio near the food truck is great when the weather permits. Main level/Upstairs vibe is well-lit with a true cantina bar feel. High-top tables, seats at the bar & happy hour from 4-7 pm make it ideal for some $7 drinks!!. The collection of Tequilas is GREAT. Many of which do not contain additives. I won't lie, I thought I was a big fan until I realized I didn't recognize a lot of the tequilas they had on hand. Downstairs is a whole different vibe. Custom craft cocktails, dim lighting with artwork, and more make it feel like an upscale NYC spot in your basement. I did 2 of my favorites, Paloma De Guayaba with the custom block name etched and the Baya Nueva. While in the Cantina, I had to order my friend the Basura (trash), but that wasn't the case... then again, it is served in a plastic bag, and is definitely a throwback to my early 20's of gettin' lit!!!! Barcoa Agaveria is clearly a popular spot in downtown Phoenix, and I can see the appeal--but my latest visit didn't quite match the hype. I stopped in late on a Saturday. It was busy, but not packed, which made the service stand out more than it should have. I had to ask for water twice, never got a refill, and overall felt largely ignored--minimal eye contact, no real warmth, just an impersonal feel that didn't match the space. It felt like a place that may be a bit of a victim of its own success--popularity has grown, but delivery hasn't fully kept pace. Part of the appeal here is the permanent taco truck outside, which I know from past visits is excellent, and I love the truck's outspoken, unapologetic support for immigrants. That said, the cocktail itself was excellent. I was specifically looking for a coffee-based drink before heading to another event, and the Cambures al Estilo Foster delivered on flavor. It was tiny, though--served in a small stemmed glass, gone in a few sips. It did the job, but some may find the portion underwhelming for the price. No major complaints, but nothing pulling me back either. I'm adding a fourth star on a bit of a hunch--I'd like to think they can dial it back in if I return. read more

What a great accidental find! Love when that happens. We were looking to have a couple cocktails before going dancing at Walter Where?house and we had planned to meet at another bar, but my friends weren't feeling it, so I took a look on the map for what we could walk to. Barcoa Agaveria was perfect for us. When you see "agave" in the name it's clear we would be enjoying some nice tequila, sotol, or mezcal based cocktails. I prefer tequila personally. I love that this place is essentially 2 distinct bars. On top floor is a bright and vibrant space with a decent sized menu with classic cocktails. I had the Vampiro cocktail while I waited for my friends to walk over. The bar staff are friendly and quick. After I finished my drink we headed downstairs to the basement bar for craft cocktails, it's a dark and vibey area with cool lighting, I really enjoyed the scene. One thing to know is that if you have a drink upstairs they won't allow you to bring it downstairs. I assumed it would be okay to do, but I had to finish my drink upstairs first. Once seated at the bar, we talked with our bartender about various cocktails and asked our questions. She was great. We each tried a different cocktail and liked what we had-- 1) El Chuki is a soy milk clarified cocktail with repo tequila, falernum, guava, strawberry, pineapple, lime and orange foam. I love clarified cocktails and this was my first one with an alternative milk. 2) Espiritu de Cafe is essentially an espresso martini with repo tequila, espresso liqueur, bitter orange and coconut liqueurs, and a white cacao dairy free cream. 3) Aloe y Fresa Refresher-- mezcal, gin, aloe, jasmine, lemon, strawberry, honey, cardamom, carbonation. This was good, but my least favorite simply due to not being a mezcal drinker. I try cocktails with mezcal in them as sometimes I do like the drink, usually if mezcal is the lesser ingredient. Let's paint and sip!! Tequilllllla Tequillllla... where have you been all of my life!! Service: We started the adventure with a greeting from David one of the owners. He is super friendly guy with a great attitude and a bright smile. Reminds me of southern hospitality! Our group was super large so some of us did the tasting first and others painted. We painted first. And we didn't paint dry... nope nope. Margaritas for all! And it was a good one at that. Painting: It was a super cute set up and we had free reign to paint whatever we wanted. Additionally the story behind the small Calabash and how they are used in the Tequila making process. Once we finished painting, we had a few lite bites and proceeded to the Tequila tasting. In the tasting, we tasted Blanco Tequila, Reposado Tequila, Anejo, Mezcal, Sotol and Wild Card. My favorites of the 6 are the Sotol and Wild Card. After the tasting, we collected our artwork and headed out. Parking: Because we were in a large group I didn't pay attention specifically to the parking. But we did pass through an empty lot that had a pay QR Code on it. I assume that that place would be ideal. Ambiance: This place is cool. From the outdoor to the lounge downstairs. If you are hip and happening in AZ, you should be here. Its giving, first and next date vibes. Downstairs is cozy and upstairs has a hall that would be perfect for a reception. The drinks downstairs were supper yummy if a little pricey. It can be a hard to commit to a try something different when a single drink is going to run you $17, but the servers were super helpful and accommodating! Then upstairs was fun (though the music was a bit loud) and tacos from the truck were a great way to wrap up the night! The parking situation was really the only draw back of this place. Any of the nearby lots are going to run you at least $30 for only 2 hours. You might get lucky finding street parking in the neighborhood to the west but if you are not with a group of people it can be a sketchy walk by yourself at night. read more

I've been to Barcoa Agaveria twice. The first time was on a Saturday afternoon for Urban Wine Walk. The second was on a Friday evening. I Ubered both times. This Mexican bar is located downtown close to Roosevelt Row. Ambiance (4/5): Upstairs, you'll find a bar with some seating as well as an outdoor patio. However, the best spot to be is downstairs. The vibes there are amazing with the dim lights and decor. I didn't even know there was a downstairs bar until my second visit. Don't miss it! Service (4/5): Solid service on both visits. Not exceptional but efficient. Food (N/A): They have a Mexican food truck outside. During Urban Wine Walk, I had some fish ceviche from the truck. However, since the sample size is so small, I feel like I need a full meal to properly comment on the food. Drinks (3.5/5): One of the cool things about Barcoa is that the drink menu is different upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs, some of the highlights include a giant margarita and basura (Spanish for trash---a cocktail served in a plastic bag lol). As you would expect, a lot of the cocktails focus on margarita and mezcal. They also have a selection of Mexican beers. Downstairs, you'll find an emphasis on craft cocktails. It's an interesting menu and I enjoyed trying a couple of their offerings. The unfortunate part? Some portions of each cocktail are pre-made. Some friends brought me here for a birthday celebration. Barcoa Agaveria is located near the Roosevelt Row Arts District. Just look for the neon BAR sign or the bike on the outdoor patio roof if you can't find it. Being a Mezcal lover, I have been wanting to check this place out for some time. Barcoa Agaveria has a nice selection of Mexican spirits like tequila, raicilla, sotol, mezcal and bacanora. The cocktails on the menu are very creative and unique. The ambiance here is just as fun as the drinks. Barcoa Agaveria is a two-level cocktail bar. The top level is pretty cool, but the lower level is where it is at. We booked a space down below and had a nice server wait on us. The basement is dark, artsy and pays homage to Mexican culture. I really dig the vibe here. I had a hard time deciding on what drink to order because the menu had such a large selection of margarita and mezcal drinks. After getting a round of bday shots, I ordered the Elote Moda cocktail. My buddy got the Leche de Pistachio. The drinks were smooth and delicious. I recommend taking some time to explore Barcoa Agaveria. There is some fun decor and beautiful artwork on the walls. The top level is designed to be like a classic cantina. The front outside patio is pretty chill and has some colorful tables and chairs. For food, they occasionally partner with local food trucks. What a treat to hangout here. I went with my sister to checkout a Mezcal tasting and fell in love with this place. What makes this a super cool place? There is a bar on the first floor and in the basement. First floor bar is brightly lit with a pretty chill and casual vibe.The basement bar is more cozy and intimate with dim lighting. The bartenders and hostess were super cool and friendly. There is a huge patio for outdoor seating and a delicious taco truck - Provecho, to satisfy your hunger. The food pairs well with the various tequila cocktails. Happy Hour menu at the bar upstairs is full of fun drinks with the best prices. The staff is super friendly downstairs, and the drinks are well-made. Towards the middle of the night. We made our way upstairs They had different drinks upstairs, and I absolutely love the Mexican sangria. They have live music and food vendors out in the front of the bar. The only issue I had was that. I ordered a cantarito and we were never told that we had to bring it back up to the bar at the end of the night so we wouldn't get charged for it, so we were scrambling around trying to find it. read more

I found the best mezcal in Phoenix! It really is 2 places hidden in one randomly on Roosevelt row. Upstairs is a fun Mexican theme, Reggaeton playing. Downstairs is a sultry southwest feel but an authentic Mexican bar. Our drinks were incredible! We watched the servers create a drink with juice they carbonate in house, everybody was ordering it, pinkish red. The servers were really kind and chill. Barcoa is what I would call a 'hole in the wall' literally. When I first pulled up I was a little confused as to where the bar is and it's a little door in the corner. I took uber because downtown driving is a nightmare. Anyways, I entered and it was karaoke night. The downstairs lounge wasn't open, unfortunately so I can't have anything to say about that however, the bar that was open the cantina I believe, was very small. The bar took up half the room and then there were like four tables max and it was cramped for a karaoke event. I don't think it's cantina is the best space wise for that kind of event. I love the decorations though. That was great. The bar tender is very efficient and made my drinks quick. The food is a food truck and I had some delicious tacos. 14$ for 3 tacos isn't bad and it was shrimp tacos. I had two drinks and it was total 24 which was a little pricey but overall not that bad. I had a guava margarita and I asked the bar tender if they used syrup and she said it was 'real fruit' but 'kind of syrupy'. I want to say that it was the simply squeeze bottles I believe which is 'infused' syrup. So it's not 'real fruit'. It's fruit or flavorings that has been mashed and mixed around with heaps of sugar and then removed or mixed in. The bar experience wasn't all that. Maybe it was because it was karaoke but it wasn't a very enjoyable experience. My friends and I sat outside which wasn't too hot due to the misters and had the drinks and food and then we left. That's it. There is parking you have to pay for and it's a whopping 34 dollars for 3 hours. Barcoa doesn't control parking is what they say but be prepared to include 34 dollars in spending for your night out. read more

It always amazes me how many small spaces the creative minds of Roosevelt Row can utilize. I've walked through this block thousands of times without noticing anything here, and one day, some local mixologists decided to bring it to life! You will absolutely feel excited as soon as you walk in--the blaring reggaeton, burning candles, and bright interior design just *begging* you to take lots of videos for your story. As the name would suggest, this bar specializes in agave spirits. Much of the menu is dedicated to education--page after page about definitions, how it's made, different types of tequilas. Someone upstairs really wants you to *learn*. After doing my homework, I started my night with a bacanora margarita. I enjoyed it! That smokiness, one I'd say to be more muted and refined than its sibling mezcal, is the sort of experience you need to come here to have. Most cocktail bars, even the most high-end and award-winning, aren't deliberately featuring lesser-known agave selections like these. I did sort of forget some of what I ordered, as well as what my friends ordered because half the menu was basically the same stuff! It felt like a bunch of spiked aguas frescas, as though bartenders are hoping the novelty of sotol or raicilla alone can carry them to five stars. Not quite. Nevertheless, this is one of *the* cocktail bars you should visit. Even if you're a tourist and just coming here for a few days, you should make this a priority. There is simply no better place to indulge in a selection of fine Mexican spirits, and it's a fun little enclave to let loose with your friends. I have been wanting to visit this place for quite a while now and finally got the chance to the other weekend. There are two levels to the bar, and we chose to sit downstairs. The atmosphere is so fun and if you like tequila and mezcal, I'm sure you will enjoy this place. I ordered the espresso con cordones. I thought this drink was absolutely amazing. This place is amazing!! First time visiting: they allow dogs so I was able to bring my corgi in the outdoor area. Their outdoor area is so beautiful and you can tell they put a lot of work into it. The owner of the Provecho food truck was there making some amazing tacos (Al pastor). I had a mezcal mule and I was impressed and was so glad I randomly came across this place!! Second time visiting: Stopped in before an anniversary date with my boyfriend and he was obsessed with the beer and a shot deal they have. Third time visiting: I was with some friends in the epic-looking basement area. They have different craft cocktails down there than the upstairs area.
