The vibe is restless hustle and bustle; the streets are narrow and full of potholes (a gentrification work-in-progress); the people are predominantly young Gen Z's who take this all in a stride while queuing up for trendy instagram cuisines such as ice cream tacos and Michelin-recommended Taiwanese pan-fried bao. The food may not be the cheapest or most authentic, but it's trending in social media. Pine & Crane strives to be authentic Taiwanese comfort food. It falls way short in that regard, but the social media buzz and Michelin star keep the crowd coming nonstop. Line is long but moves swiftly, thanks to an efficient staff. We ordered 4 items, my favorite being the minced pork rice (flavor spot-on). Where should I start? If you're looking for slightly elevated Taiwanese cuisine that is medium authentic, has decent flavors then pine and crane is the place for you. Don't get me wrong. The food here is good, but I do feel that the flavors are a little Americanized. The beef roll portion was huge. While the pancake itself was nice and crispy, the cucumber to meet racial was a little off. In my opinion. I wish it had a little bit more meat. The pancake overall had good flavor, but I do feel it was a little on the sweet side as well. I really enjoyed the smashed cucumber appetizer and the seasonal vegetable, which in this case was Taiwanese cabbage. Both were well done. As for the limited pan fried dumpling, I felt that it was too doughy. For the beef noodle soup, it was just okay in my opinion. The beef was tender, but the broth was lacking depth in flavor. My friend and I had a chance to visit the Silver Lake location on a Sunday around 4pm. We were pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too busy, there were only 2 parties in front of us. We grabbed a menu and ordered at the register. They ask if you prefer a private table or a seat at a communal table. We chose a private table and waited a little bit for one to open up. Just ok Taiwanese food. Could get yummier food at a mom & pop shop, BUT the service was excellent and it was a cheap Michelin Guided restaurant. Dishes (ranked by best): 1) Beef Roll: best dish I had there but it was just standard in terms of flavor 2) Dan Dan Noodles: it was creamy, but it needed more flavor (ie chili oily). Lately I've been trying more places serving Asian dishes in town than I used to be, and my most recent one being Pine and Crane. As expected, tough parking in Silver Lake, but fortunately ordering process wasn't as bad. As the venue was busy, guests were required to place order at the counter before being seated. The staffs were super accommodating in trying to assure shorter wait time. Coming in a group of four, we're trying multiple dishes by having family-style meals. We got their Pork Belly and Beef Roll for small plates, Wood Ear Mushrooms and Lotus for sides, and their iconic Dandan noodles from the noodle selection along with Twiced Cook Pork from the rice dishes. Price to portion was decent and sharing was certainly great idea to enable you trying multiple items. The pork belly had strong garlic flavor, so tender, and perfectly thin-sliced that it felt like melted in my mouth. The beef roll was one of my highlights, seemed simple combining beef slices and leek yet I was always a fan of this kind of Chinese pancakes. Then my number one was doubtlessly the most peanut-based Dandan noodles. This iconic dish was such comfort food especially for me a peanut lover. The noodles certainly elevated it, getting the whole group impressed by how cheesy it was and how flavorful the sauce was. The crushed nuts toppings enriched overall texture play on the plate. We came on an early Saturday evening, right around 5:30 pm. Finding parking was a challenge, but if you're willing to do a bit of walking, then it's no problem. The scallion pancake was a bit too thick and doughy. The shrimp wontons was good, but just missing a little something. The sausage was a bit on the dry side. The pot sticker skin was a little thick too, and could be a little crispier. And the Dan Dan noodles was a little too heavy, and lacked a kick. They have a mix of community and private tables and you're typically asked which you'd prefer. We got a private table and ordered their vegan Dan Dan noodles, vegetarian mapo tofu and three cup chicken. The dishes were deceptively large and we were barely able yo finish this food between the two of us. All the food was mild but extremely flavorful. I've rarely had Asian food taste so delicate and balanced. They have a punchy chilli oil on the tables too if you like a little bit of kick. The restaurant doesn't have any parking, but I was able to find free parking eight minutes away by foot on a random side street. This may be a tougher exercise at peak hours. Food (4/5): I went with the cup Jidori chicken which my sis said is the best thing on the menu. This was a first for me when it comes to this dish. I came on a Saturday after a hike at Griffith Park and had no idea there was a farmers market happening. I parked on the street about an 8 minute walk from the restaurant, but the food was worth it. It was a hot day and the restaurant was packed, so I took my order to-go. They have a small, shaded patio in front, but it's much cooler to sit indoors. Also loved the vegan mapo tofu which was so smooth. The trumpet mushrooms were a great substitute for the usual pork. The basil eggplant was served sizzling hot, clearly fresh from the wok.
