My wife and I stopped by Pine & Crane on a Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. for a late lunch and there were plenty of seats available when we arrived. Ordering is done at the counter and the restaurant is self-seating. Between the two of us, we shared their beef pancake roll, their three cup chicken, pork potstickers and a side of their lotus roots. This ended up being too much food for the two of us to finish and we ended up having to take home leftovers. I really enjoyed the beef pancake roll here. The inside has generous amounts of thinly sliced, marinated beef shank, and the scallion pancake wrap is rolled out very thin, crispy, and not oily at all. There's a bunch of julienned cucumbers inside for that crunch and just the right amount of hoisin sauce for that added sweetness. I wouldn't change a thing about this dish. With the three cup chicken, I enjoyed how spicy the dish was; definitely a dish you'll want to enjoy over rice. If I had to nitpick, one improvement that could have been made to the dish is if the chicken pieces were cut to be smaller. The potstickers here are well-made. If you're looking for Japanese-style gyoza, you will not find that here. The ones here are very in-line with what you'd find at food stalls on the streets of Taiwan in terms of texture, taste, and flavor. The potsticker wrappers have a wonderful crispiness to them and the pork filling is well-seasoned: I didn't actually need to use the included sauce to enjoy the dumplings. I'm grateful for a Taiwanese spot in Silverlake. It's a nice change of pace and adds some diversity to all the beers, burgers and tacos in the neighborhood. The way it's set up is pretty cultural. It reminds me of some hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant the way they have metal utensils at each table. It's almost like a self-serve system to certain tools which is pretty common. I haven't drank water out of metal cup in a long time, so that was nostalgic too. We tried a variety of dishes to get a fuller understanding of their menu of what this place has to offer. I was really looking forward to the beef roll because it's usually one of my favorite dishes, but this one was disappointing. I define a good beef roll as one that's a good mix of sweet, savory and refreshing. The meat makes it savory and the veggies are supposed to counter it make the whole dish feel light. If someone disagrees with me, please share your thoughts on what a beef roll should taste like. The one from Pine & Crane was drenched in sauce. We've been here at least 30 times and we are never disappointed no matter what we order. I need to commend the owners for running such a tight ship. Even when it's busy, they pace out the seating and the food without acting stressed. I especially like the wonton soup. I always ask them to hold the noodles and add more bok choy, and they kindly comply. The broth is savory and comforting, and the wontons are plump and tender. Where should I start? If you're looking for slightly elevated Taiwanese cuisine that is medium authentic, has decent flavors then pine and crane is the place for you. Don't get me wrong. The food here is good, but I do feel that the flavors are a little Americanized. The beef roll portion was huge. The pancake overall had good flavor, but I do feel it was a little on the sweet side as well. My friend and I had a chance to visit the Silver Lake location on a Sunday around 4pm. We were pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too busy, there were only 2 parties in front of us. We got their Pork Belly and Beef Roll for small plates, Wood Ear Mushrooms and Lotus for sides, and their iconic Dandan noodles from the noodle selection along with Twiced Cook Pork from the rice dishes. Price to portion was decent and sharing was certainly great idea to enable you trying multiple items. The pork belly had strong garlic flavor, so tender, and perfectly thin-sliced that it felt like melted in my mouth. The beef roll was one of my highlights, seemed simple combining beef slices and leek yet I was always a fan of this kind of Chinese pancakes. Then my number one was doubtlessly the most peanut-based Dandan noodles. This iconic dish was such comfort food especially for me a peanut lover. The noodles certainly elevated it, getting the whole group impressed by how cheesy it was and how flavorful the sauce was. The crushed nuts toppings enriched overall texture play on the plate. He was a blast from the past, back when people in the service industry were actually happy to see you and treated guests like they mattered. Honestly, a huge disappointment. I had high expectations because it was in the Michelin guide, but it let me down SO much. First off, this restaurant was extremely loud. The soup was one-dimensional and bland. The noodles were pretty chewy and texture was great. Three Cup Jidori Chicken - As inauthentic as it gets. The sauce was so gelatinous one one-dimensional again. However, on the positive side, there was a lot of chicken. Overall, I would never come here again.
