My friend and I dined at Voodoo Vin last night after wanting to visit for weeks. We came by right after work so we were the first diners of the night. They have a small menu of a few set appetizers and then entrees and desserts rotate daily. Ambiance was very cute and cozy. The gentleman who take care of us was super friendly - I'm sad I didn't get his name. I am not a wine connoisseur by any means, I know a few things I like and that's about it. Our waiter was kind enough to let us sample the three whites they had rotating that night so we could pick what we wanted. I ended up going with a nice Georgian white. And now for the food! Cucumber and pomegranate salad (5/5) - it was fresh, crisp, and very well flavored with the fresh herbs. Ghormeh sabzi with rice (3.5/5) - flavor wise it was delicious, it reminded me of my grandma's ghormeh sabzi. Kidney beans were a bit undercooked. Rice was fluffy and well cooked. Tahchin with chicken (3.5/5) - flavor was good, I think it could have used a bit more seasoning and the rice was more "custardy" than I am used to. Blood orange tart (3/5) - the tart itself was yummy but the blood oranges were quite bitter. Our meal was quite expensive which I completely understand given the quality of the ingredients they use and the fact that they are small business. With that being said, I'd probably only come back here for wine and small bites, not a full meal. But I think Voodoo Vin is worth trying at least once. read more

So glad I discovered this cute little gem! I visited with 2 gfs for a casual GNO with small bites and wine, but this cozy, candle-lit spot would be perfect for a date night too. This place specializes in Persian country cooking and natural wines. I think this was my first time trying Persian cuisine.. and I was pleasantly surprised :). While everything we tried was delicious, the portions were on the smaller side, so it felt more like an appetizer-focused experience. - Nazkhatoun (eggplant pomegranate dip): the perfect balance of savory and sweet, paired with crispy flatbread that complemented every bite. - Shirazi salad: a refreshing mix of cucumber, tomato, and fresh herbs with a citrusy dressing. Voodoo Vin is like taking a seat in someone's Persian kitchen. Lovely, unfusy ambience, great jazz records on vinyl, and delightful homey cooking. Sitting at the bar affords you a view of all the steaming pots of stew bubbling for hours and lets you chit-chat with the wonderful owners. Honestly, I'm only leaving this review because we had such a great time with Natalie and Michael, and I want everyone else to have that same experience. This was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've ever had. The service is incredibly poor, there's only one server for the entire restaurant, and the wait times are ridiculous. Expect to wait a long time just to place your order, and even longer to find out they don't actually have what you wanted. They were out of multiple menu items, and to make things worse, they didn't even let us know until nearly an hour after we ordered. The food that did arrive was underwhelming and definitely not worth the steep prices they charge. The wine selection is nothing special, yet they charge nearly double what you'd pay elsewhere for the same bottle. Overall, the quality does not match the price or the hype. Save your time and money--there are far better places to eat. read more

So disappointed with this dining experience for my friend's birthday celebration. I understand the concept of a wine bar/small space, however it is not ok to have 3 items on your menu and one of them isn't available, so we tried to order the other two items, but the other item had just ran out-because the waitress took forever to come take our order (over 25 minutes). Service is extremely slow, food portions are so extremely small that we left hungry and annoyed. In addition, this is not what Iranian hospitality is about at all. Wine was not even that impressive. We left with a large bill which I have no idea how a small appetizer, one entree, and a bottle of wine can be that much. Yes, prices have gone up everywhere but this isn't even worth it. Such a waste-should have gone somewhere else. The owner's rent is probably so cheap too that's probably how they are surviving and charging so much for such small portions. Sad that the owner didn't even care when we reached out via ig -their reasoning for their poor service was "organically sourced" and explaining what a wine bar is, rather than owning and recognizing their mistakes. Voodoo Vin has to be one of my favorite spots to eat in LA. The menu always changes based on what's fresh and in season. You'll most likely see farmers market produce in almost every dish. I always admire the music in the background and the impeccable lighting. It feels like you're transported to a bistro in Europe. I always order the chicken liver mousse tartine. This time it was topped with fresh blueberry compote but the compote usually changes based on what's in season (the apricot is always my favorite!) The ricotta gnocchi is UNREAL. They're like little cheese pillows swimming in a pool of fresh nduja sauce. It was topped with fresh chicories so you got a little bit of a crunch too. My favorite place to sit is at the bar so you can watch your food being made right in front of you. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about wine. Very nice wine bar with delicious food options to hang out with friends or go on a date. After hearing about it for months, we finally decided to trek out here from West LA and ordered the beef stew and the eggplant dip with feta. The dip is phenomenal and comes with a side of bread to eat it with. Definitely get the feta as the creaminess goes super well with the eggplant. The stew was also really goos and it came with unlimited rice and (limited) tahdig. The flavor is rich, savory, and tart, which pairs perfectly with the wide variety of wine that is available. We ended up getting a glass of the natural wine and white wine. The staff was very nice and I am looking forward to trying different menu items when I return! read more

There's something about the celebration of food whether I'm the one behind the kitchen, the one at the table, or both. Today I returned back to VoodooVin, a wine bar with Persian country cooking, on Virgil Ave in Los Angeles. I once came to this restaurant when Travis Hayden spearheaded the food. A few years later, the invitation of the establishment still swoons the visitor (myself) in. I bring a food. Their first time there. We order non-alcoholic drinks, the cucumber mint sharbat and immediately appreciated the refreshing normalcy of ordering such a drink in a wine bar. The drink fizzed with a right sweetness accompanied by the breath of cucumber. The pomegranate walnut stew and beef stew with red kidney beans were incredibly proportionate in the spices and salt it was hard not to keep digging in. The beef stew lent itself, to my memory, to something of a Persian-styled mole sauce with the subtle sweetness. It was all a beautiful meal. From the hello to the goodbye. Super disappointing. I feel so bad and embarrassed that I chose this place for dinner and drinks with my friends. I really wanted to like it, especially since it's a smaller restaurant. The menu was hand written on a notepad paper, barely legible, the server couldn't pronounce most of the dishes, and there was no explanation of what we was listed without you asking. Ordering our food felt slightly like a skit. The food was slightly above mediocre. I can't imagine people were impressed by the food since so many people left their plates with food on them. Overall, I'd say this place is a no go for dinner. I'd maybe come back for a drink, but it's not that cozy, so maybe only during the warmer months to sit on the patio. Taste: the bread and butter were really good. The radishes were not worth it, neither were the anchovies. The polenta had popped sorghum, but it made the whole dish taste like popcorn. The polenta came last, and for the first few dishes it felt like there was no real culinary value added to the dishes we ordered, they seemed just chopped up or taken out of the jar, so the polenta felt like the first dish where the kitchen made something interesting, but I didn't particularly like it. Experience: the door to the restaurant was open despite it being cold outside. Couldn't take our jackets off because it was cold. The service was good, fast, and the waiters were helpful. The tables and chairs aren't very comfortable. It looks cool though. Mood Before/After: I'd been excited to try this place for a long time because the crowd looked trendy and I like natural wine places. I was in a good mood before. I was still in a relatively good mood having been with good company, and glad that I tried so I know it's not the place for me. Fullness: the plates were really small, we spent about $130 on food ($220 total), and left full enough, but kinda craving a bit more. What else did I eat/do today affecting my experience: I went furniture shopping earlier and was happy with my purchases, which possibly made me feel conscious of prices, but tbh if the food had been better I wouldn't have minded read more

Wonderful new natural wine spot on Virgil! I'd heard about VV from a wine-producing friend and followed them on the 'gram. As luck would have it, my usual wine contact was out of town this weekend and I needed some gifts, so I decided to give Voodoo a try. I rang them and Cass helped me out on the phone. Her knowledge of producers and wines was deep, nuanced and articulate. She was patient and wanted to make sure I knew what she knew about the wines I was selecting. I picked five bottles, including a 2018 Frank Cornelissen Susucaru which I am really excited to try. (ok, I've tried it before, but still...) Picking up the bottles was a perfect experience. Owner Natalie helped me out and we got to chat a bit. I really felt her passion for wine and for how much care went into setting up the shop. One example -- for when things get back to normal: they have a Zach Cowie (In Sheep's Clothing) designed vintage audio system...clearly the choice of someone who knows what's up in audio and cares enough to hire one of the most respected vintage audiophiles and in-demand music supervisors working today to work his magic. Wow. Voodoo Vin has my highest recommendation -- creative, personal, and delicious. Give them a try. read more

A lot of restaurants and bars (in the LA scene particularly) do a lot of lip service to the idea of creating a community space, but I've never felt more comfortable, delighted, and taken care of than tonight's experience at voodoo. A wonderfully cozy space with an" subtly surprising wine menu. I'll definitely be back to try the chefs food menu next time. Such a great place!!!!! You can buy a bottle to go or sit down for a glass. The staff is soooo friendly and helpful. They let you try and bunch of wines before you choose a glass or bottle to sit and enjoy. The prices for a glass range from $15-$18, and a bottle is anywhere from $65-$200.
