This is such a quaint little place. Great for a date night. When it's hotter I may pick sitting out back in the patio maybe. The decor is fantastic being a French Italian bistro with American rock n roll memory on the wall. I think we enjoyed everything and while the fish dish was unique for sure, we thought the actual fish in the dish was lacking flavor. But fear not this place apparently rotates its menu so always something new to try.

Joséphine are the names of two Grandmères of Marco Gagliardi, the chef and Anthony Dragotto in charge of the front. Two different grandmother's whose mastery of the family kitchens affected and influenced the lives of their grandchildren. Such is the power of food to change the course of history. Tight interior with nice back patio. Previously home to venerable Sompun Thai and Bowery Bungalow Middle Eastern. Some of the interior pays homage to their grandmother's, but don't expect music from the 50's, Chanson nor Tarantella. Also, some of the decor elements may hark more to a man cave. Menu is very abbreviated with about 14 items but curated in a way that follows a more Italian style: Antipasti, Primi which can include Paste plural for Pasta, Secondi, Dolci. The menu wisely changes monthly due to obtaining food products at their peak and easy availability as well as making customers come back for more. Nothing is as much of a killer than a menu that never changes. Some intriguing dishes are Tagliatelle pasta tossed in piquant chili crab ragù. Seared tuna belly on Piperade which is a vibrant, savory Basque stew or sauce made of bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and garlic, gently simmered in olive oil and seasoned with red piment d'Espelette. The ingredients intentionally match the red, green, and white colors of the Basque flag. Rabbit Roulade is a rolled piece of meat with Puttanesca composed of tomatoes, salted anchovies, black olives, capers, garlic, and red pepper brought together in an olive oil base Cherry Clafouti is in prime cherry picking season accompanied by high fat Crème Fraîche. The consistency of Clafouti is a cross between a custard and pancake and served warm. The last time I had French Italian was at charming Joséphine et Napoléon on Melrose Avenue many moons ago based on Corsican cuisine. It was a natural French Italian collaboration since Corsica was part of the Genova Republic which sold its claim to France in 1768, one year before Napoléon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio, Corsica. Anyway, Joséphine is a rising star, and wish it Buona Fortuna/Bon Chance! 4+ stars

Food is fantastic, service is not bad, restaurant is very nice inside, pricing is just a little crazy. The steak is priced decently but all the appetizers are very expensive. They looked great but portions were super small. I would go for the bread service, side salad, and steak. Side salad seems simple but has a great dressing on it. Overall great meal!

Good service, good food and overall good vibes. We enjoyed our first time at Josephine.

Came in for my bday last night. The food was outstanding--everything was cooked to perfection. We ordered the tartare, gnocchi, lamb, and fries, and every single dish was absolutely delicious. The whole experience felt special, and Anastasia made it even better with how friendly and helpful she was throughout the night. Highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a great meal and a great vibe.

best food ive had in a long time blackberry duck agnolotti, blackberry clafoutis insane, place is special great hospitality as well

    Nothing

Waited for my meal for 40 minutes while everyone else I came with got their food and already finished eating, they weren't apologetic or anything just straight up rude, the waiter came and told me it takes longer to cook the steak, we all know medium rare doesn't take long. Steak and fries take wouldn't recommend this ever. I didn't serve the us army to have this treatment. Any veterans don't come to this scam

We waited nearly 20 minutes to be seated and another 20-30 minutes before anyone took our order. I understand that restaurants get busy, and we were trying to be patient because we could see the staff was overwhelmed. When we finally got our beer, I told our server, Noah, that I could pour it myself if that would help. Instead of explaining the situation politely, he responded with attitude and said, "You know I can't serve you guys, right?" I apologized, but then he told us, "Nah, you guys have to leave." This was frustrating after waiting so long just to place an order. We were never rude or disrespectful to the staff, so the interaction felt unprofessional and unnecessary. The most we have seen so far, it was more a "business plan" let's do what Americans may think a German beer garden looks like. Our friend, the LA promoter Vahe, took us yesterday. We found a little gem, grown over the years, with an actual German owner and a service that had more than basic knowledge of German food. Nice! The ambiance was what you would expect from a place like this, less stylish-designer but more owner look-what-we-brought-from-Germany over the many years. The food was actually good, reasonably priced and generously portioned - the sauce platter really deserved its name "platter"- Came with great German curry ketchup. It would be too much to brag about the food, it was decent better than just OK version of classic beer garden dishes. But one has to be fair: where in German beer gardens you find food really worth bragging about? So while I was really tempted to stop at 4 out of five stars, I give 5. After all, it matches my most key how-to-get-5 element: would I do a 30+ min detour just to go here. If someone asked me to show them decent German cuisine in a somewhat authentic ambiance, I would take them here. The Kiez may be closer to our home, the Wirtshaus more stylish, but here we found the hearty welcome we missed elsewhere.

The people here were nice and had a corky humour to them. Our table got two sausage platters, frickles, lemon pepper wings, and a pretzel. There is usually an expectation for American bar food before you enter the establishment, and they all lived up to the hype. The textures were amazing, fried food was crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside. Sausages had a bite to them and tender in the middle. Flavour profiles here were smoky, punchy, sweet, and vinegary. The lettuce mix under the sausages was a nice touch too. This fed four perfectly. Great variety of beer too! Hungary didn't make it to the World Cup this year so that was a bit of a bummer, considering my fam is from the old country. However, my second all-time fave, France, was still in the semi-finals. You see, I grew up watching Zinedine Zidane and to me, the World Cup brings back childhood memories and family bonding time. The menu items took me back in time. Much to my surprise, I noticed that there was a Hungarian kielbasa & a Debreziner sausage listed on their $10 lunch deal. I was shocked that I had the opportunity to debate over which one to pick. DEBREZINER sausage (in German) or for us Hungarians, is better known as "Debreceni Virsli" and made in the region where my dad's side of the fam grew up. It's often served cut up on the sides and has a richer color. For me, it's a bit juicier and there's more paprika in there. It's more along the lines of chorizo, if that's what your flavorbuds prefer. It's made with sweet and hot paprika, garlic, pepper, and marjoram. If my dad had been with me that day, he'd opt for the Debreziner. After deliberating for a bit, I decided to go with the HUNGARIAN KIELBASA and decked it out with grilled onions, sauerkraut, and jalapeños (very hot, stated the menu). The jalapeños rivaled the outside 100+ degree temperature. Thankfully, the cool AC made me forget it was one sweltering summer's day. Also, the Hibiscus Cider was crisp and made my experience and the lackluster game worth my time out. I loved how easy the ordering went-just tap the menu on the iPad and voila, you got the whole spiel. Service was quick and felt welcoming like I was at home in someone's living room with tons of TVs all around. Sadly, France didn't show up to play in the game until the last 5 mins or so. Spain obvi deserved the win and yes, this year's cup for their fancy footwork. The vibe was great and the crowd around me were locals on a first name basis with the staff. With awesome cider and food as tasty as I had growing up at home, I think I'll make it a goal to be on a first name basis around here during the NHL & NFL season.
