    Roasted Japanese Sweet Potato
    Kathy X.

Dunsmoor is one of the best restaurants I have been to this year, and I will absolutely be counting down the days till the next time I am back! The interior is really cool, it has kind of a rustic elevated feel, and it makes for the perfect date night spot. The service is wonderful, everyone is so friendly, and food comes out fairly quickly. I love that they have an open kitchen so you can watch the meat's getting grilled along with the fresh dishes, being prepared as well. We tried the cornbread, baby albacore, anchovies that come with a warm oven, roasted bread, pork chops, Japanese sweet potato, and the addressed lettuce. Everything we ate was so good, it is so hard for me to pick which were my favorites. The pork chops are super tender, it basically taste like a steak. The Japanese sweet potatoes are also so jammy, and you obviously have to get the cornbread. The multi pie is also a really great dessert, it has a thick Oreo crust and is perfectly sweetened.

Dunsmoor absolutely lived up to the hype!! * Cornbread (10/10) - This was insanely indulgent, crispy edges with a soft, fluffy crumb. Easily one of the best cornbreads I've had. * Pork Chop (9/10) - I'm usually picky with pork chops because they're so easy to overcook, but this one was PERFECT. Juicy, tender, and the lemon squeeze on top made it pop * Pork & Chile Stew (7/10) - Not super memorable, but I do remember appreciating the homemade tortillas * Chopped Chicken Liver (8/10) - Rich, thick, super flavorful. And the sourdough was not overly dense * Baby Albacore (9.5/10) - This one surprised me!! The crispy shallots on top were unreal and added the perfect crunch Overall: incredible food, cozy vibe, and kind service!!!

I feel like this restaurant is on everyone's hit list right now. I am fortunate enough to be able to mark it off mine. Reservations are hard to get but I had little trouble. There were none available so I put my name on a waitlist and got a text two days later for a mid week 7:15 time. Perfect. There's plenty of street parking within a block or two but they also have valet. However it's a dirt lot so if your car is clean just park on the street. The restaurant was jumping. I'm sure it's always busy. The music is good but it could be considered a loud space. The majority of of the tables from what I could tell are Communal so you will likely be seated right next to someone you don't know. Not a bad thing but it takes some getting used to. The service is spot on. They come fast and often preferring to take the entire order at the start. The pacing of the food was pretty good from there. Okay now the food. We started with the cornbread because you just have to. It was delicious. It's sweet with the glaze and rich from the butter. But delicious. We got the Carolina Gold Rice and every bite of that dish was to die for. If I'm being honest and I am, that's where the amazing meal ended. Everything from there was so rich and buttery which isn't the worst thing but it's just the reality. Our main dish was the trout. Buttery with a couple of stray bones. The Japanese sweet potatoes. So sweet that you only need a bite or two. And we got the buttered cabbage. Well butter is in the dish name so you can imagine. We opted to not get dessert because for two people that was enough food and it was a heavy rich meal. Some places just aren't for me and I think Dunsmoor falls into that category. There were four main dishes. The trout, which I got. The ribeye which was too big for a party of two and really couldn't be cooked to the temp I like. The lamb which they wouldn't cook the temp I like. The pork rubbed with mushroom and my friend wasn't into it. Plus I hate mushrooms. Now you can see why we ended up with the fish. I would recommend it for a try for anyone. But I may be a one and Dun here.

Took months to get a reservation here, so expectations were HIGH. Warm, intimate space with an open-fire kitchen, but it does get loud and a bit cramped. Food is rich & flavorful. Service was great and knowledgeable. Downsides: reservations are hard to get (plan way ahead) and parking is all street parking, which can be a hassle. Also a bit pricey for what you get. Overall: 8/10 -- worth trying at least once.

I might be an outlier here, since everyone seems to love this place, but I'm disappointed to report it might be overrated. This spot has popped up on my social media feed countless times, so it was at the top of my wishlist. A friend and I finally snagged a reservation to see what the fuss was about, but honestly, we left feeling a bit let down. What I did like: The restaurant itself is super cozy, and the quality of the ingredients was great. You could tell the care and attention that went into each dish. The staff is great and attentive. What I did not like: The menu felt a bit limited, and it seemed like everything was COVERED in butter. Perhaps it's the dishes that we ordered. Let me take a step back and say that the butter itself was amazing, and I'd take it with some bread any day. What I did not like was that in a number of our dishes, it felt like there was a heap of butter on them. The empty cavity where my gallbladder used to be is crying. Here's what we tried (And yes, we're not THAT adventurous and don't eat anything raw). * Edna's Sour Milk Cornbread (3/5): This was the star of the show on every single video we saw and the main reason we came. First off, I loved the texture. It was baked to perfection with a slight crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. I normally love savory cornbread but something about the amount of hatch chile, butter, and sweetness made this a bit odd to me. * Warm Khadrawy Dates with bread (5/5): This was delicious! I never thought about dates roasted in brown butter slathered on bread, but I'm a fan now. The bread was fantastic. * Aunt Emmy's Pork & Green Chili Stew (5/5): We both loved this dish. The pork was so tender with melty cheese. It came with the softest flour tortillas that we actually ended up ordering more for the table because they were that good. * Grilled Mt. Lassen Trout (3/5): I was hoping for more tender fish. It was sitting on a bed of garlic aioli that I could've done without, or at least a little less of. Between that and the oil it was cooked in, it just felt way too heavy. * Roasted Japanese Sweet Potatoes (3/5): I love Japanese sweet potatoes, but I didn't expect a literal mound of cane syrup butter on top of each one. I ended up scraping most of it off just to enjoy the potato. Overall, I'm glad I checked this off my trending list, but I could really do without the extreme heaviness of everything. We left feeling very underwhelmed.

I'm so sad to say this place is overhype! I have been seeing Dunsmoor all over my social media. I was super excited to try Dunsmoor, slowly counting the weeks until my reservations. One thing, I agree this place is super pretty inside and out. They do offer valet or you can find street parking all around. Food we ate: Dates and bread- bread super yummy, together gave a taste of peanut butter. Which I thought was neat. Cornbread- I had high exception on this and I did not care for it at all. Texture was good and I did enjoy the sweet and then the salty notes but the crushed salt was just too much. I'm not sure if mine was just over salted! I kept on eating on pieces of salt after each bite. I usually loved corn bread but not this one. Green chili pork dish- my favorite of the night, I love the tortilla! The dish was solid! Fish- okay! It didn't have too much flavors. Tasted like oil. I needed to squeeze the lemon all over the fish just to give it some extra seasonings and taste to it. Japanese potatoes- I'm a fan of Japanese potatoes but they put so much butter that it just missed the whole greatness of this potatoes. We didn't even want to eat much of it. The service was good. Overall, glad I try it!

Hmmmm. 3.5/5 stars, rounded down because I can't justify a 4. This was a tough one. Overall, it's pretty good but I don't quite understand how this place is so challenging to get reservations (booked a month out). The cornbread is the hype of this place and, while it's good, I found that it didn't taste that great without the delicious crispy crust. The inside of the cornbread itself was quite bland to me, so I had to eat it with a piece of the crust every time. We also ordered the beef ribeye, chili stew and grilled carrots. The most memorable dish out of these three was definitely the chili stew! It comes with tortilla wraps and you make a little stew burrito with it - whoever came up with that idea is genius! It is a bit salty without the tortilla but still amazing. The beef ribeye had an odd taste to it and I feel like it was the lemon added into the steak that made it taste weird to me. Like the flavors didn't mix well together. So I'd try it without squeezing the lemon first. It also tasted very meaty to me and I wasn't too impressed with the flavor itself. I would forego the grilled carrots. It wasn't good at all and I regret ordering that as a side. The taste of the sauce did not mesh well with the carrots. Overall, it's a decent place for a pretty pricey celebratory meal (beef ribeye alone was $150). I do think it's overhyped though by social media, and probably would not go out of my way to specifically reserve here again unless for a special occasion. We also saw a giant fat roach or waterbug (?) crawling on the floor near us and I made eye contact with another customer as I also watched him accidentally kick it under the hostess's counter as he exited the restaurant. It was entertaining but does speak to the cleanliness of the place (though not surprising given LA).

Dunsmoor in Silver Lake is a great spot for date night or with friends. The space is a perfect balance between cozy and upscale, and the open-fire kitchen gives the whole restaurant a warm, inviting vibe. The cornbread is unforgettable-perfectly golden, rich, and just the right touch of sweetness with an outside crisp. We also ordered the Bluefin Tuna Toast, Dressed Lettuces, Pork Chop, Raw Oysters, Ribeye Steak, Baby Albacore, Dates Spread, and Sweet Potatoes. Desserts were also yummy in which we ordered the Grapefruit Custard and Chocolate pie. Each plate we tried was so delicious with bold, comforting flavors. Service was excellent--attentive, welcoming, and with a knowledgeable staff there to make your experience memorable. Overall, Dunsmoor is a standout spot that's absolutely worth a visit, especially if you appreciate thoughtful, fire-driven cooking and a memorable dining experience.

Well...this place did not live up to the hype for me. I'd say it's a good restaurant, but I wouldn't come again. The good: The cornbread was amazing. I have to give them credit, this is probably the best cornbread I've had in my life. The texture is amazing and the flavor is immaculate. If this is all I had, I'd probably give Dunsmoor 6 out of 5 stars. The baby albacore was also great. Imagine elevated American sushi flavors. The ok: the liver was good, I like how they balance the richness of liver with a sour base in the pate. Not enough bread though. The bad: first, their soup was way too salty. Like drinking from the ocean. Even my friend didn't want to take it home, and he's a guy who likes taking leftovers wherever we go. the biggest disappoint was the steak. This was the reason I came here. The steak was slightly overcooked and it was way too chewy and dry. A big let down and it actually ruined the dinner for my friend and I. We were already disappointed by the soup, but we're like "hey maybe the steak will redeem this meal"...unfortunately it was a complete miss. Mastro's, Vaca, Alexanders, and Capital Grille all make better steaks imo. Service was ok, nothing bad to say. The ambience was nice though, it's a nice date spot.

We celebrated our anniversary at Dunsmoor, and it was exactly what we were hoping for. I'd been wanting to try an upscale, American-forward spot, and its heritage style really delivered. We had a reservation early in the evening and were greeted with smiles and seated quickly, server with water in hand. He offered the full first-timer spiel, but we had already spent the day deciding. His approval of our order sealed the deal, and we waited patiently, side-eyeing our neighbours' orders as they arrived to get a sneak peak of the dishes. The baby albacore (4/5 ) was a wonderful starter, extremely tender without going full melt in your mouth. The combined textures from the lemon zest and flakey fried onion gave it a woody (?) bite, but in a really good way. Weird, I know, but it really felt natural and intentional. The lemon balanced things nicely, though we both felt it could've been dialed back slightly to let the rest of the dish shine. The cornbread... no notes. I'd come back just for this, honestly, next time I might order a few and call it a meal. It completely lives up to the hype, and the inspiration for the recipe? Adorable and truly "American heritage." To our surprise, the ribeye (3/5) was the letdown. At $150, it leaned too heavily on the accompanying seasoning and felt a bit flat on its own. I understand the intended pairing with bone marrow, but even then it didn't quite land. There were also some tendons left on the cut that could've easily been trimmed. I am glad that salt was included on the plate, as we would have felt too awkward to ask for any. Maybe expectations were too high, but at that price point, it left us wanting more. That said, I look forward to trying the duck breast/pork chop on our next visit. The dressed lettuce (5/5) was a sleeper hit and surprisingly outshined the steak. Lightly dressed and well balanced, with a mix of herbs that made each bite feel a little different. It also cut through the richness of the meal perfectly, definitely a show stopper, literally. The grapefruit custard pie (4/5) was a solid finish. Light, not overly sweet, with a nice contrast between the soft custard and crisp crust. A refreshing way to end the meal. Overall, an amazing restaurant. The only thing I will say is that I picked this place because I read somewhere that it was a great date spot, but we found it rather loud. It was loud in a nice communal way, but nonetheless not ideal for a quiet evening. Though, maybe the article meant date, the fruit, a prominent ingredient in their arsenal. P.S. Get the cornbread. Seriously your appetite resets with every bite.

This place definitely lived up to the hype! Reservations were really hard to get but keep checking, because people cancel last minute! We got the warm halaway dates with bread, corn bread, green pork chile, and the pork chop. My favorite dishes were the green pork chile and the dates! The chile definitely had a the perfect amount spice and kick. It was also super cheesy which was a plus! The flour tortillas were super buttery and meshed so well with the green chile. I just wish we had more tortillas! The dates were nicely caramelized and had a good balance of sweet and salty. It went perfectly with the bread and I highly recommended the dates over the corn bread. I was quite disappointed with the corn bread since everyone on Yelp hyped it up. I really didn't like it. It was just way too sweet for me. The pork chop was really good tho. It was cooked to perfection and super juicy! The ambiance is very nice with the low dimmed lighting. It's a great date spot for sure! I think they made the best use of space to table ratio. I would love to come back and try other items for sure!

The interior is gorgeous and cozy, definitely on the smaller side but not too cramped. The food however was hit or miss. The ribeye was probably the best steak I've ever had in LA, and the bluefin tuna toast was ridiculously good, very zesty and not at all fishy or heavy and on the most delicious smoky toasted bread. Some of the other dishes were a miss for me though. A lot of people hyped up the green chili stew, but besides the great flour tortillas, there was nothing remotely special about it. The cornbread was unique and flavorful, but not to my personal preference. Would like to go back and try some of the other dishes we missed, but I did think the hype around this place was extremely and not fulfilled. Service was good though and the pinot we had was nice.

Very good! We tried their bluefin tuna toast (recommend my server), aunt Emmy's pork & green chili stew, mushroom crusted pork choy, roasted baby carrots, and the popular cornbread! Also got the dressed lettuce on the side for balance. The bluefin toast was so good with the crispy bread. The cornbread was good but not crazy! Not sure if I enjoy the hatch chili flavor in there. The pork and green chili stew with the side of fresh tortillas was really good. The tortilla was super soft and the stew was tender and cheesy. It does remind me of a chimichanga! The pork chop was soooo good. I never knew pork could taste that good! The flavor was perfect and it was super tender. I've never had roasted carrots in my life and this was so good. It has honey & pistachio on it. It sweet and paired well with the pork. The lettuce was the cherry on top for a nice tartness to balance everything else. I would definitely come back for the chili stew, pork chop, and carrots!

    Albacore. Another tasty item.

Aside from Gabriel, who is always nice, Customer service was subpar and not the way a local bar should feel. Posting this knowing they will likely not care but hoping you will.

We ended up staying until about 9:30 p.m. and never felt rushed or pressured to order more. The staff was very friendly and made excellent recommendations, especially considering we were a bit picky -- one vegetarian, one pescatarian, and the other only likes dessert wines!! Definitely coming back with less picky people

Waiter Manuel. This…read moreis a review reflected on you, solely. Being kind is the moral of the story, from the beginning you were passive agressive with your comments and tone. Being in a party of 4 girls coming from high tea, we were dressed in elegant dresses, first comment was asking if we were coming from church, followed by eye flutters, short "okay" with an upward inflation to a joke about the day, an impatient comment about hurrying up and trying the wine while we were talking, asked for water when we were out, were left to pour the rest of our wine, didn't ask how the food was all the while was attentive to the table behind us, the cherry on top comment was when we were discussing the bill at the end, he was hovering at the table behind ours, then when we were ready, we asked to split the bill into 2, my portion on mine and the rest on another card, he then said "this isn't like a drive through, we can't do it that way" so I asked him to explain his comment, cause it was passive agressive and rude. After he wasnt able to becuase he wasnt expecting me to call out his rude comment, I had to then break it down and specify what I had ordered, he then sold "okayyyy....so how much, cause we don't itemize?" I had to again express for him to specify how they do it cause he has still yet to explain where his attitude is coming from and explain how they do their check splits, from my understanding it just felt like he wanted to play dumb and make me to the math, one I did he was like "ohh, okay" should have asked for the manager but we paid and left, I hasnt had this experience before being a returning customer, but he needs an attitude adjustment as his attitude was completely out of pocket. Do better Manuel, you alone got your place of work a 1 star. The rest of the staff was kind, facility beautiful and food and wine was good. This restaurant is not reflected in the 1 star.

Glassell Park is a hidden neighborhood in Los Angeles, anyway, and if you don't know what you are looking for, you might zip right past W&S, as we did. Parking is hit and miss, but there are side streets and you will find a space if you give yourself an extra 15 minutes before you come. The neighborhood is mysterious to me, sort of pricey grunge & hipster, iykwim. But! Once you are inside, you are in a completely different world. Bright, clean, genteel, muted, with dappled sunlight dripping through various apertures and alighting in a soft glow here and there on shining metal tables. It's beautiful. Some catchy upbeat contempo-pop music streamed steadily at just the right volume overhead. I found myself resisting the temptation to get up and dance. There are several rooms from which to choose, but I wanted to be seated on the wine-red suede banquette that gave me a view of the whole restaurant and out onto the tree-canopied street. From the time we arrived to the moment we left about an hour later, we were showered with warm smiles and attentive service. And the food? Exquisite. See my pictures. It was hard to choose. One tiny disappointment was they were out of the biscuits that I wanted to start with, but I enjoyed the crusty tender Clark Street bread slices served with warm creamery butter instead. It only got better from there. The two bowls we ordered were filled with fresh vegetables, cooked to perfection, topped with an egg prepared as we requested, i.e., over medium. The portions are modest and it was all so good, we didn't take anything home. We ordered coffee and were brought two tall steaming mugs of Americano, smooth, dark, and delicious. Best of all was the Lemon Lavender cake, a seasonal specialty. Honestly, it might be one of the best, moistest, most flavorful and elegant cakes I have ever had. So fantastic, that I just ordered some lavender buds (if I don't collect them from our garden) to replicate it at home. I don't drink much alcohol but if I did, I would head here for one of their experiences or tastings -- they have a formidable list. Check all this out. And hurry if you want to have Lemon Lavender cake.

Our server was kind and mentioned being a sommelier, but the wine service felt underwhelming at best. The pacing between courses was also very drawn out. That said, most of the food was lovely. The only miss was the scallops, which seemed underprepared and were oddly floating in a citrus broth. We would have been happy to overlook the slow service and enjoy a long, relaxed evening catching up with friends--until the end of the night. After we had already paid our bill and were in the middle of dessert, we were abruptly and quite rudely told we needed to leave because they were closing. I didn't even get to finish my dessert, and one of our guests had to abandon a half-full glass of wine as we rushed out. After waiting nearly an hour just to begin our meal, being pushed out the door like that felt incredibly disrespectful. Such a disappointment, because I was really excited to try this place. The food is good and the atmosphere is charming--but the overall experience, especially how we were treated at the end, left a bad impression.
