Wow! This place was on my list for a minute and I'm glad I got to finally come! Great customer service! The food was absolutely divine! Up to this day, I still can't get over the shrimp! Full of delicious flavor! Nice layout, can be pretty romantic upstairs.
I was bummed when the restaurant that WAS in this space closed. I am VERY happy this spot took the space and has brought a fantastic menu and flavor back to the space. I was pleasantly surprised at the welcoming staff and warm ambiance. Going to slide one complaint in here, the noise level in the upstairs portion of the restaurant is LOUD. We sat upstairs and it was pretty difficult to hear my friends talk from just across the table. We powered through, and by the second half of our meal, most diners had finished and left us upstairs with only a couple of lingering parties. THEN this place became GREAT! Here's all that we stuffed ourselves with during the cacophony of chatter: flaky buttermilk biscuits, honey butter (3pc; please allow 20 minutes) - totally worth the 20 mins!! Super buttery and flaky, I might go back JUST FOR THIS! crispy calamari, horseradish cocktail sauce - great little kick in the sauce. Perfectly lightly battered. fideos, clams, chorizo, saffron, sweet sherry aïoli - mmmm, this was delicious. The Spanish chorizo enhanced the broth with a good saltiness. white shrimp from the griddle, aïoli - this was my favorite. The shrimp was not overcooked and peeled easily. The flavor was good enough to slurp the juices out. single burger, prime chuck, tillamook cheddar, dijonaise, egg brioche bun & crispy french fries - good meaty burger, love the dijonaise, GREAT shoestring fries. Parking is a little challenging during the day, not so bad in the evening. It's South Pas, a little neighborhood walk after dinner never hurts.
Such a cute little restaurant in South Pasadena. My friends and I went to Cannonball to celebrate my birthday and it was the best decision ever. We sat inside the restaurant but you can also reserve outdoor seating. The staff was very welcoming and too the time to explain the menu to us. Their dishes are shareable and I suggest about 4-5 dishes for a party of three. Off their menu we ordered the fried calamari, the buttermilk biscuits, yellow fin tuna tartare, the fideos clams and the barbecue chicken. Everything was delicious but our favorite was the buttermilk biscuits! Please keep in mind that the biscuits take about 20 minutes to make so please order in advance. Overall the food and ambiance were delightful and I can't wait to go back! For parking, there is street parking around the area but may be difficult since there are quite a few restaurants around sharing rhe space. There is a public parking structure down Meridian street, near heirloom bakery. We went on the weekend and the parking structure was free to park.
First and foremost, I would like to thank and applaud the entire staff here at Cannonball. My wife and I came here for the first time and we didn't have any reservations but figured we would just see if they had any space at the bar. The way we were greeted and shown to our seats, you would have thought we were VIPs. Everyone was so friendly to us, and made us feel extremely welcomed. I truly think that every staff member we walked by from the door to our bar seats said hello and welcomed us to the restaurant. I don't know how to describe the level of service other than it was Masterclass. Special thank you to Wolf, our bartender/server a the upstairs bar. Yes his name is Wolf, and he's just as awesome as his name. So friendly and attentive. As for food, Wolf recommended we try the biscuits and I'm so glad he did because it was not something that I would have ordered had it not been for him. Literally the best biscuits I've ever had in my entire life. There is no other biscuit that comes close. It's exactly as it is described on the menu... flaky and buttery. It's an experience, truly. Even if biscuits were not what you thought you were going to order, just get them anyways. You have to try them. Just do it. GET THE BISCUITS! Other than the biscuits, we got the following: Calamari - some of the best I've had in awhile. Crunchy and crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Cooked perfectly. Hanger Steak - I didn't specify the doneness but it came rare which was perfect for me. The steak was great, I enjoyed every bite, but the mashed potatoes were EPIC lol. Burger & Fries - The fries in particular were amazing. HUGE portion, very crispy, and well seasoned. As for the burger, I liked the simplicity of it. However, I think it was way over cooked. I personally like my burgers to be a bit more juicy and medium doneness. The Bill - beware of the 4% surcharge. I don't really understand these things. Just price the food how you want to price it rather than adding a 4% surcharge to the final bill. Also, their suggested tip is calculated using the Total including tax rather than the subtotal. So basically you're tipping the tax lol. So aside from the bill and a little underwhelming burger everything else was absolutely incredible.
This is a cute neighborhood restaurant and I came here tonight with a friend. Pros: 1. Plenty of parking nearby 2. Friendly service overall 3. Cute ambiance 4. I liked my salad and gin martini was good and my friend liked her dish and wine. Cons: 1. I made a reservation for 6:30 pm and my friend and I were busy in our conversation and were told by the server they need the table back at 8 pm. This was after he had come to see if we had paid the bill twice already. I felt rushed and even Bavel in downtown has a 2.5 hour time at their prime dinner time on weekends. It's embarrassing especially when you are dining with friends from Europe! Arhhh. Note that they do add a 6 percent surcharge on the bill which is not included in the tip. I'm glad I came here but I won't be back as it's only if you are in a rush and love having dinner in under 1.5 hours with friends. If you are like me and enjoy having food in a social setting and take your time, this isn't the place for you.
did a girls dinner here at cannonball and it was such a cute little restaurant and the waiter was phenomenal. We started off with the biscuits and I am a change woman the layers the flakes butter. I felt like I was at Thanksgiving and the best way possible I could eat 10 of these biscuits. We also got the clams and fido and this was delicious. We love the flavoring and it was such a creative way on clams. We also got the celery salad, which was super refreshing. I've never had a salad like this and the dates with Parmesan cheese, and the vinaigrette was a really good combination. We also split a burger and fries. The burger was OK. It needed a pickled element to it. It felt like a little plain, but the fries are really good and crispy. We did not have room for dessert. We were stuffed, but would definitely come back again.
Cannonball was such a great experience. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was fun, and the whole area has a charming old-town feel that made the evening even better. We sat outside, which was perfect for a quieter, more intimate dinner. A train passes by every so often, which gave it a cool New York vibe, but next time I'd probably sit inside. The interior looked much more lively and energetic, and they even have an upstairs seating area. We ordered the biscuits, tuna tartare, shrimp, a burger, and fries, and everything was fantastic. The biscuits were easily the highlight. Warm, buttery, crisp on the outside, and incredibly comforting. They reminded us of an elevated version of the classic Pillsbury biscuits, in the best way possible. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely come back. Great food, great atmosphere and service, and a really charming location. Highly recommend!
Went here for Valentine's Day dinner! Came for the biscuits, those were absolutely amazing! So flakey and crunchy on the outside. The shrimp was also amazing, easily peelable & super flavorful. The buger was good, but not amazing, glad it came with fries though! Only con for the food was that it came out one at a time, so we ate everything one at a time and waiting inbetween. (I prefer to get food altogether). (Also, note: I am not sure if that is normal or because it was a busy night) The service was pretty good, but again it was a busy night so it may be better on other nights. But, overall the place was super cute and was a great spot for a date night! Would definitely go again for the biscuits & shrimp
We had such a great delicious meal here, we ended up ordering a little bit of everything. I am usually not a fan of celery, but the shaved celery salad was way better than it sounds, it was crispy, refreshing and light. The roasted carrot salad is a must order now, the carrots were perfectly caramelized and slightly sweet. The grilled white prawns were perfectly seasoned and cooked, and can tell it was fresh. The tuna tarter was flavorful, and had great texture, not overly seasoned. We shared the grilled chicken as our entree, it was juicy on the inside and nice char on the outside. Highland recommend. We finished with olive oil cake, not too sweet and sublet richness and light. Everything felt fresh, balanced, and well executed. Definitely would love to come back to try other dishes.
I absolutely love Hippo in Highland Park and when I heard this sister restaurant opened up, I was thrilled! Made a reservation for my friend and I for 6:30 on a Saturday night. I arrived a few minutes beforehand and was greeted warmly and seated promptly. Once my friend arrived we ordered cocktails and then opted for the flaky buttermilk biscuits, tuna tartare, steak, and fries. We asked if this would be enough and our waiter said it would probably be a light dinner, but that we can certainly see how we feel and decide if we'd want more. The tuna tartare came out first and very quickly, and it was fresh and delicious. The biscuits came next and they were perfect. Warm, flaky, buttery, with the perfect butter to spread on. The butter is a cinnamon butter that I believe is the same one they use for the Hippo rolls, and it's incredible. Then came the steak, which we ordered medium rare, and delicious French fries. The food was all excellent. Zero complaints and all crave-able. We had some space leftover so picked out the olive oil cake for dessert and that effectively filled our tummies! Overall, this place has fantastic food, service, and incredible vibes without the insane LA crowds or annoying parking, so I'll definitely be returning!
Cannonball is a chic, two-story restaurant in South Pasadena. We tried to make a same day reservation but there were no openings until 8:30pm so we took a chance as a walk-in at 6:30 and were seated at the upstairs bar. Of course we had to partake and the cocktails were lovely. The buttermilk biscuits with honey butter were immaculate. No notes and these need to be part of your order. The yellowfin tuna crudo was light and refreshing and the vinaigrette added a pop of brightness. We finished it out with the bbq 8oz prime NY steak which was tasty but nothing to write home about. Keep in mind that because it's bbq'd, it's very charred on the outside but still perfectly tender inside.
We came to celebrate a birthday and they made us feel so special. From taking our last minute reservation and greeting us in person to bringing our girl a birthday dessert, they really took care of us. Food was a hit or miss, but everything that hit was worth coming back for. The buttermilk biscuits and honey butter are absolutely incredible. Order this the second you arrive because it does take 18 minutes to make, but comes fresh out of the oven for you. It's super soft and flaky, and the best biscuits I've ever had. Roasted carrots were great as well. So flavorful and we kept wanting more. Dessert was insane as well, we got some chocolate crème. Fideo and calamari were a miss, but they weren't bad. We will be skipping these when we come back to try the rest of the menu. It's a great time of the year to visit too because of the holiday decor. This place was so warm and welcoming. We cannot wait to come back.

The food here was outstanding, and I'm surprised it isn't rated higher! We came on a whim, 10 min before the kitchen closed, and were still treated so wonderfully by all of the staff here. The food came out quickly and tasted amazing! The trout was a huge hit for me! The purple potatoes and greens cooked in the most perfect savory sauce was the perfect complement to the perfectly made fish. I'd order this dish every time I come!! Also extremely delicious were their biscuits. Hot, flaky, and buttery, if I could have these daily, I'd be so happy! Especially after slathering on the special butter, this is like the perfect pastry for me! Another really yummy item was their fries! Perfectly fried and crispy, this place has some of the best fries I've had in a while! This is a great restaurant for a date night, hanging out with a group of friends, or just hanging out solo at the bar! I recommend checking this place out when you're in the area! read more

The shining stars were the honey biscuits, prawns and the cocktails. The hanger steak and burger had great flavor but found the meat a bit tough and both could be juicier. And fries could use more pizazz. But the aioli and sauces were amazing. The salad and calamari were good and standard. All in all probably one of the best fine dining places in south pas. That biscuit is truly other worldly. read more

Came on a Thursday night and walked in. They had a table for 2 for us. There's street parking. We sat on the 2nd floor. It's a nice dark ambiance. Great for date nights and small groups. It's more of a tapas place. Buttermilk biscuits ($14)- these are so so good. The apple cinnamon butter is so good. You have to get this! They take 30 min to prepare. Shaved celery salad ($15)- people recommend, it doesn't seem good but it was really really good. The dates were good and feta cheese was a great compliment. It's great for drinks and cocktails. They have a rotating list so the list is always changing. Stolen moments $15- gin high ball was super super good. Sour and tart Milk and honey martini- gin and vermouth was interesting and pretty good. They have a super exclusive access to this Japanese whisky called Ichiro Malt Chichibo. Apparently the owner knows a guy that imports this whisky. My friend tried a shot and he loved it. It was pretty caramelized and the alcohol didn't burn. read more
We got last minute reservations for Friday evening for 6.15. It got very busy later. We sat upstairs. The space is lovely. It is a tad bit loud. We started off with cocktails. All were good. I got the love walked in. Fabulous cocktail with ginger syrup. The rest of my party got the gg. That was good. Strong. The gg and gg was also good. For food we got the 18 min biscuits. Lovely layers on the biscuits. The shrimp was simple but very tasty. The calamari was good but just okay. The tuna tartare was fresh and lemony. The Fideo was different. I really liked it. The standout to me was the celery salad. Loved the dates. There's only one dessert - The olive oil cake. The server did tell us there was a little cornbread. But I think it was a little too cornbready for me. Definitely not your classic olive oil cake. read more
Wow...what a gem in the small city of South Pas. Came here without reservations one night and we waited 30-45 mins in the upstairs lounge area before being taken to our seats at the bar. The place is located on Mission before or after the train tracks depending on which direction you're traveling. Close by is the Michael Myers house so if you wanna stop by, this is your time. Cannonball is easy to miss as you walk by as there's no huge sign, but upon coming into the space, it feels intimate and cozy, and the ambiance is both friendly for a date night or for a family dinner (saw multiple families dining with their kids, not surprised in the city of South Pasadena). Having read up a little about this place and it being part of the Everson Royce Bar family, the biscuits were a must. Heard Greta things about the burger too but we often for something else so here's the line up for our dinner: -celery salad (bartender recommended it and even he said, "yeah, I know what you're thinking but it works." And you know what, he was right. It not only works but I thought it was incredible - so much so that I started looking for recipes online for something similar and recreated this salad at home.) -biscuits (small but boy are these mighty towers of flaky, buttery goodness...biscuits of all biscuits) -prawns (read mixed reviews about this but I actually really liked them) -steak (forgot the specific name of the dish but the steak was cooked perfectly. Tender and flavorful...delish! And served on top of creamy mashed potatoes. Yum!) Drinks were delicious also and reasonably priced. Overall, solid 5 stars and I would definitely come back Again. Service is also very attentive. Truly have nothing but to rave about this place. However, make sure to plan ahead and get reservations to minimize the wait time. read more
The service is incredibly friendly and attentive. The dishes are all reasonably priced. We went and had three small plates at the bar (biscuits, celery salad and shrimp) and a couple of glasses of wine for me and cocktail for my husband. Very enjoyable -- top quality food. Parking is pretty easy because there is a parking lot that is free right around the corner. I believe it's Mentor -- or if you just drive a block or two away there's free residential parking. It's hit or miss if you find parking on Mission. But the Mission District of South Pasadena is historic and fun to walk around. The staff was incredibly attentive and you could tell very committed to their food and wine program. The patio outside really nice. We were able to walk in at 5:30 and eat at the bar-- and they could not have been more accommodating, even though we did not have reservations. Sitting at the bar given that it's an open kitchen we could see the commitment to made to order food and it's the type of place that if anyone did have an issue with their meal, I am sure they would rectify it. They let me try sips of the wine before I bought a glass. And the front of the house was very warm. We live in the Garvanza area of NE Los Angeles and we will definitely be back. read more

Excellent! I really only came for a drink and light appetizers. We got biscuits and split a salad. My friend got a spirit and I got an IPA. We sat at the bar. The bartender was very accommodating and the vibes were very chill. Will be back to try their proteins and reorder that celery salad becase omg it was the best! read more

Our first time here and thankfully had reservations. We were seated after waiting for 10 minutes. This place is small and quaint with a charming atmosphere. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. Our food was presented nicely. All the dishes are "small plates", meant to be shared. We enjoyed the Tuna Tartare and the 8oz NY Prime. They were flavorful and enough for the two of us. The fried calamari, however, was too crispy and kind of dried. We have had better. Overall, we had a pleasant experience, but we do feel it's a bit overhyped. read more
Fun vibes, fun foods, great service :) Biscuits? Overly unhealthy but I could inhale this all night long! Roasted carrots - would eat this everyday Fideos - such a unique take to go with clams. Went here the other night. Had it on my list of places to try. There weren't any reservations available, so we decided to show up when it opened in hopes of getting a table. Thankfully we were able to get seated right away. Started with cocktails, which didn't really stand out. Maybe the wine would have been a better choice. For starters, we had to try the biscuits which were highly recommended, along with the tuna crudo and fideos. The biscuits were very good with the honey butter, thick and flaky. Just really good. The tuna crudo was also really good, a little heavy on the citrus but still good. The fideos with clams was heavy, but the chorizo added some needed pop of flavor to the dish. It was heavy though. After eating some of this, along with the biscuits, we weren't necessarily looking forward to the entree due to being full, but we rallied. The entree was the burger which, based on appearance, was not overly appealing. Looked very basic. But biting into it, the egg brioche bun was very good. Thr prime chuck meat and Tillamook cheese also worked well. So, though it does not look amazing, it was a decent burger with good flavor. The prawns were also a good size, seasoned with an aioli. Overall, those biscuits were delicious, without definitely recommend, and the crudo was also tasty. The burger was good while the fideos left sometging to be desired. The prawns and crudo can go either way, if you're feeling like it, get it, if not, you won't miss anything life changing. read more

Came with my coworker to celebrate our birthdays. Wow. In love with every single plate we ordered. The shrimp were huge. The fideo and clams was my first time trying fideo and it was amazing--the clams had a deep wine-y taste. The salad was so unique and everything in it paired so well! The burger was simple and perfect. I made carne asada fries with leftover fries the next day! We were worried about the portions since somehow the food looks small in pics but this was more than enough food for two girls who eat a lot. A great place for special occasions! read more

Recently dined at Cannonball with my hubby to see what the social media hype was all about and based on the dishes we tried, I'd say that the overall dining experience was good but we felt it to be a bit overhyped. But since it just opened, we understand if a few kinks still need to be ironed out so we can see their full potential. Pros: - Service was relatively attentive - We really liked the tuna tartare with the ponzu sauce. It was my favorite dish of the night - The roasted carrots with cumin vinaigrette dish was also quite flavorful - Nice ambience with dim lighting - Very buzzin'. Noise level was high Cons: - We were not in love with the trout dish. - We found the biscuits to be too salty and a bit too dry - The plating for the majority of the dishes were too small for the food served. Felt like it was difficult to grab items off the plate without them falling off the plate. Also, the presentation with a few items could have been improved - Small menu Will likely return in a few months to try other items and see how we like them. read more

Wait time: was seated right away with no reservation but the place is small and quaint so reservation is recommended. Atmosphere: very charming Food: from starters to meals, they came out in perfect timing. Great presentation and great flavors. Overall: staff were all attentive and provide great service. Beautiful new spot in south Pasadena! The restaurant is cozy with several tables and second floor with a few more seatings. We ordered several items, they were all beautiful, but a tad on the salty side. -tuna tartare: light and refreshing! -biscuits: super buttery and flakey, a little too heavy on the salt -clams& fideos: first time having it, super unique and flavorful! -hanger steak: the best bites! This place is an elevated dining spot tucked right in the SGV. It's a small restaurant in South Pas with limited seating so we made reservations in advance to celebrate a friend's birthday. We ordered several dishes to share: Calamari - classic but well-executed, fried perfectly. Celery Salad - light, refreshing, and a nice palate cleanser. White Shrimp - the star of the night! The aioli on the side was so good we ended up dipping other food into it too. Buttermilk Biscuit - an absolute must-order, warm and literally melts in your mouth. Burrata - simple but tasty, served with two pieces of toast. Grilled Chicken - very tender and flavorful. Ocean Trout - tasted more like grilled salmon, but the creamy corn it came with very good. Our server was super friendly and attentive. He even surprised us with a slice of olive oil cake when he noticed my friend opening her birthday gif. Overall, the food was delicious, and I'd recommend ordering multiple plates to share. It's a great spot for date nights or to celebrate a special occasion. read more
