Cannonball was such a great experience. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was fun, and the whole area has a charming old-town feel that made the evening even better. We sat outside, which was perfect for a quieter, more intimate dinner. A train passes by every so often, which gave it a cool New York vibe, but next time I'd probably sit inside. The interior looked much more lively and energetic, and they even have an upstairs seating area. We ordered the biscuits, tuna tartare, shrimp, a burger, and fries, and everything was fantastic. The biscuits were easily the highlight. Warm, buttery, crisp on the outside, and incredibly comforting. They reminded us of an elevated version of the classic Pillsbury biscuits, in the best way possible. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely come back. We sat upstairs and it was pretty difficult to hear my friends talk from just across the table. We powered through, and by the second half of our meal, most diners had finished and left us upstairs with only a couple of lingering parties. THEN this place became GREAT! Here's all that we stuffed ourselves with during the cacophony of chatter: flaky buttermilk biscuits, honey butter (3pc; please allow 20 minutes) - totally worth the 20 mins!! Super buttery and flaky, I might go back JUST FOR THIS! crispy calamari, horseradish cocktail sauce - great little kick in the sauce. Perfectly lightly battered. fideos, clams, chorizo, saffron, sweet sherry aïoli - mmmm, this was delicious. Such a cute little restaurant in South Pasadena. My friends and I went to Cannonball to celebrate my birthday and it was the best decision ever. We sat inside the restaurant but you can also reserve outdoor seating. The staff was very welcoming and too the time to explain the menu to us. Their dishes are shareable and I suggest about 4-5 dishes for a party of three. Off their menu we ordered the fried calamari, the buttermilk biscuits, yellow fin tuna tartare, the fideos clams and the barbecue chicken. Everything was delicious but our favorite was the buttermilk biscuits! Please keep in mind that the biscuits take about 20 minutes to make so please order in advance. Overall the food and ambiance were delightful and I can't wait to go back! For parking, there is street parking around the area but may be difficult since there are quite a few restaurants around sharing rhe space. First and foremost, I would like to thank and applaud the entire staff here at Cannonball. My wife and I came here for the first time and we didn't have any reservations but figured we would just see if they had any space at the bar. As for food, Wolf recommended we try the biscuits and I'm so glad he did because it was not something that I would have ordered had it not been for him. Literally the best biscuits I've ever had in my entire life. There is no other biscuit that comes close. It's exactly as it is described on the menu... flaky and buttery. It's an experience, truly. Even if biscuits were not what you thought you were going to order, just get them anyways. You have to try them. Just do it. GET THE BISCUITS! Other than the biscuits, we got the following: Calamari - some of the best I've had in awhile. Crunchy and crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Cooked perfectly. Hanger Steak - I didn't specify the doneness but it came rare which was perfect for me. The steak was great, I enjoyed every bite, but the mashed potatoes were EPIC lol. Burger & Fries - The fries in particular were amazing. HUGE portion, very crispy, and well seasoned. As for the burger, I liked the simplicity of it. However, I think it was way over cooked. I personally like my burgers to be a bit more juicy and medium doneness. The Bill - beware of the 4% surcharge. I don't really understand these things. Just price the food how you want to price it rather than adding a 4% surcharge to the final bill. Also, their suggested tip is calculated using the Total including tax rather than the subtotal. This is a cute neighborhood restaurant and I came here tonight with a friend. Pros: 1. Plenty of parking nearby 2. Friendly service overall 3. Cute ambiance 4. I liked my salad and gin martini was good and my friend liked her dish and wine. Cons: 1. I made a reservation for 6:30 pm and my friend and I were busy in our conversation and were told by the server they need the table back at 8 pm. This was after he had come to see if we had paid the bill twice already. I felt rushed and even Bavel in downtown has a 2.5 hour time at their prime dinner time on weekends. It's embarrassing especially when you are dining with friends from Europe! Arhhh. Note that they do add a 6 percent surcharge on the bill which is not included in the tip. I'm glad I came here but I won't be back as it's only if you are in a rush and love having dinner in under 1.5 hours with friends. We went and had three small plates at the bar (biscuits, celery salad and shrimp) and a couple of glasses of wine for me and cocktail for my husband. Very enjoyable -- top quality food. Parking is pretty easy because there is a parking lot that is free right around the corner. I believe it's Mentor -- or if you just drive a block or two away there's free residential parking. It's hit or miss if you find parking on Mission. But the Mission District of South Pasadena is historic and fun to walk around. The staff was incredibly attentive and you could tell very committed to their food and wine program. The patio outside really nice. We were able to walk in at 5:30 and eat at the bar-- and they could not have been more accommodating, even though we did not have reservations. Sitting at the bar given that it's an open kitchen we could see the commitment to made to order food and it's the type of place that if anyone did have an issue with their meal, I am sure they would rectify it. I am usually not a fan of celery, but the shaved celery salad was way better than it sounds, it was crispy, refreshing and light. I absolutely love Hippo in Highland Park and when I heard this sister restaurant opened up, I was thrilled! Made a reservation for my friend and I for 6:30 on a Saturday night. I arrived a few minutes beforehand and was greeted warmly and seated promptly. Once my friend arrived we ordered cocktails and then opted for the flaky buttermilk biscuits, tuna tartare, steak, and fries. We asked if this would be enough and our waiter said it would probably be a light dinner, but that we can certainly see how we feel and decide if we'd want more. The tuna tartare came out first and very quickly, and it was fresh and delicious. The biscuits came next and they were perfect. Warm, flaky, buttery, with the perfect butter to spread on. The butter is a cinnamon butter that I believe is the same one they use for the Hippo rolls, and it's incredible. Then came the steak, which we ordered medium rare, and delicious French fries. The food was all excellent. Zero complaints and all crave-able. We had some space leftover so picked out the olive oil cake for dessert and that effectively filled our tummies! We tried to make a same day reservation but there were no openings until 8:30pm so we took a chance as a walk-in at 6:30 and were seated at the upstairs bar. Of course we had to partake and the cocktails were lovely. The buttermilk biscuits with honey butter were immaculate. No notes and these need to be part of your order. The yellowfin tuna crudo was light and refreshing and the vinaigrette added a pop of brightness. We finished it out with the bbq 8oz prime NY steak which was tasty but nothing to write home about. It's more of a tapas place. Buttermilk biscuits ($14)- these are so so good. The apple cinnamon butter is so good. You have to get this! They take 30 min to prepare. Shaved celery salad ($15)- people recommend, it doesn't seem good but it was really really good. The dates were good and feta cheese was a great compliment. It's great for drinks and cocktails. They have a rotating list so the list is always changing. Stolen moments $15- gin high ball was super super good. Sour and tart Milk and honey martini- gin and vermouth was interesting and pretty good. They have a super exclusive access to this Japanese whisky called Ichiro Malt Chichibo. I thought the food was great. I chose the yellowfin tuna tartare as my main and the burrata salad as my app. Honestly the salad was better than the tartare. I got to try the steak, chicken, and polenta as well as the celery salad. I loved all of those dishes and probably liked the tartare the least. It was mainly the texture and that it was heavily processed and like a pate rather than a tartare. We got one of each dessert, a peanut butter mousse and olive oil cake. I liked the flavor of the cake but the texture of the mousse. Neither of the desserts did it for me. Wow...what a gem in the small city of South Pas. Came here without reservations one night and we waited 30-45 mins in the upstairs lounge area before being taken to our seats at the bar. Cannonball is easy to miss as you walk by as there's no huge sign, but upon coming into the space, it feels intimate and cozy, and the ambiance is both friendly for a date night or for a family dinner (saw multiple families dining with their kids, not surprised in the city of South Pasadena). Having read up a little about this place and it being part of the Everson Royce Bar family, the biscuits were a must. Heard Greta things about the burger too but we often for something else so here's the line up for our dinner: -celery salad (bartender recommended it and even he said, "yeah, I know what you're thinking but it works." And you know what, he was right. It not only works but I thought it was incredible - so much so that I started looking for recipes online for something similar and recreated this salad at home.) -biscuits (small but boy are these mighty towers of flaky, buttery goodness...biscuits of all biscuits) -prawns (read mixed reviews about this but I actually really liked them) -steak (forgot the specific name of the dish but the steak was cooked perfectly. Went here the other night. Had it on my list of places to try. There weren't any reservations available, so we decided to show up when it opened in hopes of getting a table. Thankfully we were able to get seated right away. Started with cocktails, which didn't really stand out. Maybe the wine would have been a better choice. For starters, we had to try the biscuits which were highly recommended, along with the tuna crudo and fideos. The biscuits were very good with the honey butter, thick and flaky. Just really good. The tuna crudo was also really good, a little heavy on the citrus but still good. The fideos with clams was heavy, but the chorizo added some needed pop of flavor to the dish. It was heavy though. After eating some of this, along with the biscuits, we weren't necessarily looking forward to the entree due to being full, but we rallied. The entree was the burger which, based on appearance, was not overly appealing. Looked very basic. But biting into it, the egg brioche bun was very good. Thr prime chuck meat and Tillamook cheese also worked well. So, though it does not look amazing, it was a decent burger with good flavor. The prawns were also a good size, seasoned with an aioli. Overall, those biscuits were delicious, without definitely recommend, and the crudo was also tasty. The burger was good while the fideos left sometging to be desired. I originally called to make reservations about 10 days in advance & when I called the lady said I'll get a call back in 24-48 hours which seemed odd and then I never got a call back. I ended up calling back a couple days later and got reservations for the day & time I originally wanted. My wife and I arrived about 20 minutes early and we got seated immediately. The customer service from beginning to the end was amazing. I was extremely impressed with the decor of this place. It's extremely cozy, warm and quaint. I was also loving the playlist they had. The drinks were great and the food was pretty good. The burger was a little small but packed with flavor. My wife said the tuna tartare was bland and was too citrusy. The chocolate dessert was good, but nothing special. The menu is extremely limited. There is inside upstairs, inside main, inside stools by the chefs, and outside Staff was super friendly and helpful. Beautiful space and everything in between! The food is delicious! I mean delicious ~ service is great and worth every penny! I suggest making a reservation or it'll be a good two hour wait even on weekdays but I say it's worth it! The biscuits yummy! Can I just say the simplest hamburger was so good I would again pay for this overpriced finger licking delicious hamburger lol Celery salad is sour but so delicious. 4.5 Stars I was bummed when HIPPO stopped serving brunch and I could no longer get Chef Mat Molina's signature Buttermilk Biscuits. When I heard that newly opened Cannonball had them on the menu, I was ecstatic! And, if you're a fan of Everson Royce Bar's infamous burger you can get it here too. Cannonball took over the former Piccolo location. I was happy to see that the original brick walls are still there. I arrived when they opened and asked if I could sit at the bar. Joe kindly escorted me upstairs where I was greeted by the darling Jessica (bartender). The wine list is extensive and includes a variety of vintage selections. The cocktail program is also top-notch, offering a selection of refined creations that pay homage to the local area in addition to a few classics. The food menu is limited, placing an emphasis on quality and the incorporation of seasonal ingredients. The biscuits are made fresh to order and take about 18 minutes. I requested them along with a cocktail - Take the "A" Train because it sounded intriguing. My drink was a delightful surprise - a nice blend of Cognac, Cynar, house made orgeat, lemon, & nutmeg. It was lovely and reminded me of fall. I savored it while enjoying the background music that had me grooving in my seat. My eyes lit up with excitement when the coveted biscuits were placed in front of me. They were as majestic as I remembered. Three flaky, mile-high biscuits stacked on a plate with a generous amount of honey butter on the side. I took my first bite, and I was in heaven! The biscuit was warm with multiple flaky layers that melted in my mouth. The honey butter was the icing on the cake! I wasn't the only one enjoying these delicious morsels. The ladies sitting next to me ordered them too. Excellent service from hostess, to runners, to waiters. Ambience very pleasant. The one problem: that burger is a JOKE. Think 7-eleven, mini-mart, school cafeteria. The meat is tasteless, processed, and worthless. AND it's small! It's covered and salt to cover the complete absence of flavor. No fresh toppings available (I asked) except garlic mayo to cover the flaws. That burger is a prominent, featured choice in a very small selection of entrees from which to choose, and it should be wayyy better than that. Instead it is a complete failure. I understand the restaurant business is hard, with rising costs, etc., but that is no excuse. WILL NOT RETURN Everything else was very nice. read more
