Bar Betsy is a lovely, charming, and quaint spot with very friendly service! We dropped in for a bottle of wine and a few snacks, and we really loved the vibe overall. We enjoyed a nice, crisp bottle of white Greek wine, though the markup is steep--it ran around $80 for a bottle that retails for $18, and most of their list is well over $100. As for the food, the fried olives ($13) were very tasty, even if $13 feels a bit high for six olives, and the cheese board ($24) felt a little sparse for the price. It's definitely not a budget-friendly place to drink, but the atmosphere and service are wonderful. The price tag is really the only drawback! read more

Loved this place! The food was amazing and the staff were super sweet! The turkish eggs were delicious! We also enjoyed the caprese and parisian ham sandwiches. The almond cherry cookie and double chocolate cookie were also highlights of our brunch. Stop into the cute little gift shop on the corner, Sidecca, while you wait! One of the servers was sweet enough to come get us when our table was ready. Can't wait to be back! read more

This time we went for brunch on a Sunday. It was very busy but the wait wasn't long at all. There is a lot of turn over. Have heard so much about the grits, but unfortunately they weren't on the menu. Apparently it changes a lot, which is cool. Started with a delicious Americana, and a mimosa. The mimosa is charged as a glass of champagne, and a glass of orange juice, btw. My huevos rancheros were delicious. Loved the Rancho Gordo beans, and the eggs were perfectly runny. My husband really enjoyed his breakfast sandwich, and could barely finish it! We sat inside, which was very pleasant. There are also tables outside, and several people had dogs. Definitely looking forward to returning and trying some other items. read more

This is Betsy's younger sister, opened just a few weeks ago. It's in the same building as Betsy, a print/copy shop separate them. Bar Betsy is an all-day place; it's a coffee/breakfast/lunch cafe 8am-3pm, then segues into an evening wine bar with snacks, cheeses and charcuterie. The space is beautifully done and decorated with custom woodwork done by a good friend of proprietor Tyler Wells; it's overall a bit brighter and airier than Betsy. It's also not live fire. They were not too crowded when I came shortly after opening on a weekday; I'm sure weekends are another story. In the morning the low front counter displays the day's baked goods, and then becomes another seating area later on. There are tables inside and out, plus a long counter with seating. I ordered many things; here's the low-down. Note I'm not a coffee drinker. 1) orange juice squeezed right before my eyes from a bowl of Schauer Farms oranges. What else can be said? 2) strawberry muffin. Soft with crispy edges, still warm! Was that cornmeal in the mix? 3) almond cookie. A ball covered in confectioner's sugar with a cherry in the middle! 4) Marsh Hen grits. This dish had a tomato confit before, now it has a tomatillo salsa, plus bacon, cilantro (the menu says scallions) and an optional poached egg. Delish. 5) Grain bowl with rouge de Bordeaux, English peas, avocado, Japanese sweet potatoes (not listed on the menu), onion, greens, feta, sumac (egg optional). Another winner. 6) Roasted carrot sandwich on house-made stecca bread with romesco, tahini, sprouts. Unique and tangy! I want to try pretty much every other dish on the daytime menu, and most on the evening menu as well, although I'm not a wine person. I was told about, had read about, and took a peek at the produce garden they have planted in the former nursery space of former neighbour Altadena Hardware, lost in the Eaton fire. The building's charred skeleton was still seen for months after Betsy's opening, but is now gone. The garden also has a long communal table for private events. I read Mr. Wells has big plans for another restaurant space in mid-city (Melrose Hill). Let's hope he needs the Betsy's and Altadena as much as Altadena needs them. read more

Cute brunch spot, came on Sunday morning with no line. The pastry case looked really good- we got the sticky bun with toasty walnuts on top. It was decadent and delicious. Def more of a 2 or more person kinda pastry. Drinks were simple and good. Food wise I think I was comparing with the oomph and flavors of Betsy next door but it's actually much lighter than that. We got the roasted carrot sandwich, breakfast sandwich, and orange juice. Our server squeezed the orange juice right in front of us and it was pulpy and delicious. The menu has changed over the past few months but it feels better than ever now. The ahi tuna salad is one of the best salads on earth. The Turkish eggs, the grits with the salsa and the beans, the breakfast sandwich, the kefir with that lemon curd--all of this is absolutely delicious. The salads are in the same style as Betsy, next door--fresh crisp little gem lettuces, splash of tangy dressing, fresh herbs, absolutely delicious. Bread, charcuterie, and cheeses--and the sandwiches that are made with them--aren't to be missed. For dinner, the burger is amazing, but so is the hangar steak, the pesto bucatini, and the trout! Nice to walk in at dinner time and get a full meal, plus excellent wines by the glass and bottle. Can't go wrong here. Feels like a true Parisian wine bar or cafe. read more

I had the kefir and my friend and I split the cinnamon roll which tasted like it had just come out of the oven. When I went for dinner, we ordered some charcuterie which our server/barkeep helped us to choose. She also was amazingly knowledgeable about the wine which always helps this wine dunce!! Unfortunately, I didn't stay long enough to order food, although I was hungry. The coffee was fine. I'd love to try this place in the evening for wine and tapas, when laptops aren't typically used. We love their restaurant, which both are pricey but this place is crazy expensive and service needs work! Three people breakfast over $100 Like seriously? 2 poached eggs & Sourdough bread was good Lox bagel, which my husband didn't like, there was too many extra stuff. 1st time here and enjoyed the dining experience. We got seated right away at 9am on Saturday. Attentive/friendly server. I got the delicious, creamy grits--it came with a perfectly cooked egg, generous chunks of bacon, and salsa that complemented the grits so nicely. My friend got the breakfast sandwich which was equally delicious--especially loved the bread which was more of a biscuit, and loaded with bacon and eggs. The coffee was great and strong too. I just walked in and ordered. Honestly already by the service I won't be coming back. The waitresses were a bit rude and did not feel warm or inviting. Maybe they don't have enough waiters and feel overwhelmed? (But when her friends walked in she was extra happy) the gentrification is real after the fire. I feel like I just walked into highland park. I ordered the large latte and breakfast sandwich which came out to 23 bucks. Born and raised in Dena so I know good service. Ok update on my food: latte was a bit too bitter so I added agave when I came home. The sandwich fell apart almost immediately from the bottom. Came in today for a business lunch and ended up spending more time and having more enjoyment than planned. I arrived a little early, and the staff was really kind and told me to sit wherever I liked. I just had the worst experience at Bar Betsy, somewhere I have come to treasure as an Altadena resident of over 30 years that lost my home in the fire and was thrilled to see & support a new business in our struggling community. I've been a frequent patron of Bar Betsy from their very first day and have always had a lovely time. Today, after a 13 hour work day, I wanted to unwind with my husband over a glass of wine while we finalized some rebuild details for our contractor. Bar Betsy felt like the perfect place for the job, since it has come to symbolize hope on the horizon for poor Altadena. We walked in, were seated, and pulled out a laptop to get started. The waitress promptly came up and told me that they were a "no laptop establishment" and that I'd have to put it away or leave. I thought she was joking. As I looked around at the mostly empty restaurant, every other group was sitting at their tables, staring at their cell phones. How is that any different? And are you seriously going to kick out a paying customer that's just trying to finalize their rebuild details at a place that felt like the center of the community in which they're trying to rejoin?? L I honestly can't believe this happened. I am beyond disappointed. Here's to hoping for better businesses in our community in the future. read more

But I've also been a couple times and found they serve from different menus at different times and I wasn't there at the right times. Yesterday I was told in a somewhat condescending way about the schedule. You don't have a telephone, you don't have a website that spells it out, you don't publish menus.
