Unfortunately, I didn't stay long enough to order food, although I was hungry. The coffee was fine. I'd love to try this place in the evening for wine and tapas, when laptops aren't typically used. We love their restaurant, which both are pricey but this place is crazy expensive and service needs work! Three people breakfast over $100 Like seriously? 2 poached eggs & Sourdough bread was good Lox bagel, which my husband didn't like, there was too many extra stuff. We had a lovely server named Sydney!! It's a very tight and small space. But three of us managed to fit at our table. I think out of all the things we ordered, the lemon pie was my favorite. This is Betsy's younger sister, opened just a few weeks ago. It's in the same building as Betsy, a print/copy shop separate them. Bar Betsy is an all-day place; it's a coffee/breakfast/lunch cafe 8am-3pm, then segues into an evening wine bar with snacks, cheeses and charcuterie. The space is beautifully done and decorated with custom woodwork done by a good friend of proprietor Tyler Wells; it's overall a bit brighter and airier than Betsy. It's also not live fire. They were not too crowded when I came shortly after opening on a weekday; I'm sure weekends are another story. In the morning the low front counter displays the day's baked goods, and then becomes another seating area later on. There are tables inside and out, plus a long counter with seating. I ordered many things; here's the low-down. Note I'm not a coffee drinker. 1) orange juice squeezed right before my eyes from a bowl of Schauer Farms oranges. What else can be said? 2) strawberry muffin. Soft with crispy edges, still warm! Was that cornmeal in the mix? 3) almond cookie. A ball covered in confectioner's sugar with a cherry in the middle! 4) Marsh Hen grits. This dish had a tomato confit before, now it has a tomatillo salsa, plus bacon, cilantro (the menu says scallions) and an optional poached egg. Delish. 5) Grain bowl with rouge de Bordeaux, English peas, avocado, Japanese sweet potatoes (not listed on the menu), onion, greens, feta, sumac (egg optional). Another winner. 6) Roasted carrot sandwich on house-made stecca bread with romesco, tahini, sprouts. Unique and tangy! I want to try pretty much every other dish on the daytime menu, and most on the evening menu as well, although I'm not a wine person. I was told about, had read about, and took a peek at the produce garden they have planted in the former nursery space of former neighbour Altadena Hardware, lost in the Eaton fire. The building's charred skeleton was still seen for months after Betsy's opening, but is now gone. The garden also has a long communal table for private events. I read Mr. Wells has big plans for another restaurant space in mid-city (Melrose Hill). Let's hope he needs the Betsy's and Altadena as much as Altadena needs them. read more

I am so impressed with this cool new spot! Trendy ambiance, service was great - it was a full house but we were seated quickly at the bar. Food was a 10/10. We got the roasted carrot sandwich, breakfast sandwich, and orange juice. Our server squeezed the orange juice right in front of us and it was pulpy and delicious. The breakfast sandwich was super hearty; the biscuit was perfect and the fluffy eggs and cheddar really tied it together. The roasted carrot sandwich was my favorite thing - loaded with veg and the tahini really tied it together. So unique, I'm already craving it again!!! read more

I've been here twice since they opened. Oh my goodness gracious. So good. The breakfast was divine. I had the kefir and my friend and I split the cinnamon roll which tasted like it had just come out of the oven. When I went for dinner, we ordered some charcuterie which our server/barkeep helped us to choose. She also was amazingly knowledgeable about the wine which always helps this wine dunce!! What a charming wine bar! This place can get packed around dinner hour but it's worth it. I love the variety of seating they have. I love the outdoor seating especially around sunset hour. The indoor seating is cozy and casual, offering both bar and booth seating. The staff are fantastic! Usually it's hard to understand which wine I'd really enjoy and their team brought out the best light red for my friend and I to share. I also tried a glass of white wine and it was perfect. Little Betsy is open all day and serves up breakfast lunch and dinner as a bar. We came for a bar dinner and really enjoyed the tapas sized side dishes which were just right for light dining. Wine is the main drink of choice and I found that women met at this bar in groups or by themselves; I think I was the only guy that was not a cook or waiter. read more

What a wonderful addition to our neighborhood! We had dinner reservations at Betsy (separate review) but our seats weren't ready so we went to BarBetsy for a glass of wine. They have very recently opened, and it's absolutely lovely! The room itself is beautiful, and I especially loved the big lantern in the ceiling. We were welcomed to sit anywhere, even though we said we just wanted a drink while waiting for our table, which I loved. They pour very interesting wines by the glass, and we got to have a taste before we committed to a glass. They were delicious, the service was so friendly, and the bites menu looked super interesting, but we didn't order anything because of our upcoming dinner reservation. Love the concept of a breakfast & coffee spot in the morning (a friend said their grits dish was incredible) and a wine bar at night. I hope they are very successful! read more

We went to Bar Betsy on a Sunday morning/afternoon and had a great experience. The place was popping so we opted to sit at the bar rather than have what seemed like a short wait for a table. The service rocked, the guy behind the bar who served us and squeezed our orange juice was super friendly, and had some awesome recommendations. Definitely get the orange juice, it is made with locally farmed oranges and squeezed at the bar. The carrot sandwich ruled and the breakfast sandwich was also delectable. 1st time here and enjoyed the dining experience. We got seated right away at 9am on Saturday. Attentive/friendly server. I got the delicious, creamy grits--it came with a perfectly cooked egg, generous chunks of bacon, and salsa that complemented the grits so nicely. My friend got the breakfast sandwich which was equally delicious--especially loved the bread which was more of a biscuit, and loaded with bacon and eggs. The coffee was great and strong too. I just had the worst experience at Bar Betsy, somewhere I have come to treasure as an Altadena resident of over 30 years that lost my home in the fire and was thrilled to see & support a new business in our struggling community. I've been a frequent patron of Bar Betsy from their very first day and have always had a lovely time. Today, after a 13 hour work day, I wanted to unwind with my husband over a glass of wine while we finalized some rebuild details for our contractor. Bar Betsy felt like the perfect place for the job, since it has come to symbolize hope on the horizon for poor Altadena. We walked in, were seated, and pulled out a laptop to get started. The waitress promptly came up and told me that they were a "no laptop establishment" and that I'd have to put it away or leave. I thought she was joking. As I looked around at the mostly empty restaurant, every other group was sitting at their tables, staring at their cell phones. How is that any different? And are you seriously going to kick out a paying customer that's just trying to finalize their rebuild details at a place that felt like the center of the community in which they're trying to rejoin?? L I honestly can't believe this happened. I am beyond disappointed. Here's to hoping for better businesses in our community in the future. read more

Came in today for a business lunch and ended up spending more time and having more enjoyment than planned. I arrived a little early, and the staff was really kind and told me to sit wherever I liked. The menu is limited, but I really enjoyed the salsmi sandwich, and my guests loved the salad and the breakfast sandwich. The space is so warm and inviting, and everything is delicious. We live very close, and so have gone there a few mornings in a row. I have frequented the original Betsy, which has very consistently been 5 five stars imho - blessed to have it in the hood. Bar Betsy was ok - but not, even for its intended purpose, at the same level as Betsy. Food was just ok and both ordering and food took a very long time even though it was empty (apparently chefs were turning over...?) I'm all-in for OG Betsy! I have been to Bar Betsy twice now... (and Betsy once!). The food is great, tastes homemade, super delicious and the coffee was honestly outstanding. So I love all that. Couple of things though: When I asked for some jam for my biscuit (the egg biscuit at breakfast... ) the waitress said, I am not sure if I can get you that, I may have to charge you. For some jam? After I am paying a super premium price for a breakfast sandwich? Seemed a bit petty. She reluctantly brought it out later and made sure to let me know that she was giving it for free this time, but next time I would pay! Then I had to use the restroom and honestly, it is SO DARK I could hardly see anything. It is lit with candles which is nice ambiance, but a teensy lamp so you can see where the toilet paper is and if there is somewhere to put your purse would be really helpful. Then when it came time to pay, I got out 60 bucks to pay and tip...US legal American tender btw... because that is what breakfast for two came to, she wagged her finger at me and told me they don't take cash, only cards. So if you don't have the luxury of a bank account and credit cards, what then? What if we, as customers are tired of being surveilled and recorded for every step we take and spend? The reality is that the merchant pays fees to get paid with cards... which is then passed on to customers with higher prices...and consumers pay for cards with interest and fees.... so it is a vile system that we Americans are buying into... and penalizing each other for. It is a cruel cycle and when businesses demand that customers pay with cards... it just feeds corporate greed. Businesses pay more, customers pay more. Banks win. Why not end that cycle with allowing people to pay cash. Everyone wins. I am bitching because I think it is important to contemplate the social cost of demanding your customers pay with cards. Anyway. The food was really really great. So there is that. I am on the fence. I pay lots of money to eat out these days and when I do.... i'm warning you. the food here is pretentious and sad :( they charge an arm and a leg the tiniest servings of blandness. expect to pay $40 for bare minimum grits & overcooked under-seasoned eggs on burnt toast. the $18 chicken sandwich was cold, kids-size, and underwhelming. and i'm not sure why it took forever for everything to come out. the food lacks love. straight up insulting. the stars i'm giving are purely for the ambiance, wonderful staff, and drinks. it's as if the owner is a designer without tastebuds come here only for the drinks (coffee, wine) & pastries. that's it. avoid the food. i can easily make better eggs and sandwiches at home. note-i've also been to the betsy restaurant next door and the the food there is similarly underwhelming and overpriced. read more

Definitely commend this place for creating a beautiful, chill gathering spot. So much care went into designing the atmosphere and into building a team of professional, friendly staff. All this attention to detail makes me wonder why there are not more non-alcoholic drink options or food choices that cater to dietary restrictions. Yes, I know it's a wine bar and a local business can't please everyone. But in 2026, with so many folks like me in recovery (2 years sober!) and so many establishments signaling support for their clientele's different needs along these lines, it felt odd to have to inquire about this and catch the server so off guard. And while I know a lot of people have a choice in the matter re: gluten, I unfortunately do not. I don't expect anyone to roll out the red carpet for my admittedly annoying restrictions, but I wish I could feel a little bit more welcome at a wonderful new gathering space in my community after so much loss.
