Wine bar.
Nikki B.

After paying a visit to sister establishment ID-Éclair, I noticed La Cave on my way back to the car. I returned a few weeks later with a friend to check it out. La Cave is a vegan friendly wine bar that opened in February of this year. The menu features a curated selection of biodynamic wines from Europe & California in addition to vegan bites created by Chef Romy. The place is cozy & quaint and there is even a private table in the wine room where you can enjoy the special Chef's Tasting Menu. Our darling server's name was Emily. Very fitting for a Parisian style wine bar. My friend and I started with a glass of sparkling Llopart Brut Reserve rosé from Spain. It was lovely - light, crisp, & refreshing. We decided to share the Cheese Board, which came with a variety of artisan cheeses, fruit, nuts, crostini, and house made jam. We also got an additional side of Crostini that came with house made "butter" and Monini Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The cheeses were fantastic! All made in house from cashews. I appreciate that all dishes are prepared from scratch with plant-based ingredients, so you don't have to worry about chemicals or unhealthy hydrogenated oils. My friend is not vegan, and she loved the cheese! My favorite was the tomato herb. Hers was the Brie. The house made "butter" and jam were also exceptionally good. My friend and I really enjoyed our visit here and agreed that we would come back, even solo to sit at the bar and enjoy a glass of bubbly & nibbles. La Cave truly is a hidden gem that can be enjoyed by Vegans & non-Vegans. Don't forget to stop by ID-Éclair afterwards for some amazing Vegan desserts. *Metered street parking or nearby lots.

Ham and Brie on a baguette.

This place is a standout in the Pasadena area. Do not walk, run. It is a fully plant based wine bar and small bites spot, and it absolutely delivers. I ordered the ham and cheese on a baguette along with the pâté, and both were phenomenal. The food was thoughtful, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. Service was warm and attentive without feeling overbearing, and the ambience was spot on. Cozy, inviting, and perfect for a relaxed night out. I will absolutely be bac

After 7 visits and counting, I can wholeheartedly say that this wine bar is one of Old Town best spots! I was completely in love on my 1st visit, and since then, it's become a place I look forward to every single week! The service is one of the many reasons this place stands out: Emily, Alfredo, and Christian bring the true spirit of hospitality every time. They are warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. Emily, in particular, has become a highlight of my week. She's down to earth, intuitive, and attentive to every detail, balancing calm care with a great sense of timing and flow, even during the busiest moments. Alfredo is just as thoughtful and clearly keeps things running smoothly. His cocktails are fantastic, and his energy adds to the experience in such a great way. The menu is a thoughtful blend of California and French influences, and everything is a home run. From the quality to the creative presentations, it's clear Chef puts care into every dish. Whether you are sharing a few appetizers, enjoying something sweet from their pastry case, or pairing it all with a glass of wine, you will be happy! The space itself is intimate and beautiful, with rich wood, soft lighting, and a design that feels both elegant and cozy. There's also a private room near the wine section that hosts special chef's dinners. Have not had the chance to try one yet, but hopefully one day! Everything is spotless, well cared for, and clearly run with pride and attention. I love supporting small businesses, especially when they offer something truly special. This place makes it easy to do just that. It's more than a wine bar, it's a community place that hosts good food, great people, and genuine hospitality.

The food was fabulous. Such care is taken with the dishes and the flavors were great. It's good to know it's all good for you while you indulge in such yummy food! Beautiful space. Great for dates. You can impressive them by taking them to a plant-based restaurant to show them that you care about the environment and the animals. Service was good, too. Would definitely come back again. La Cave is a magical experience for your taste buds and the ambience is warm and inviting. The staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable! Can't recommend this special gem highly enough if you're ever in Old Pasadena. Or better yet, it's worth a trip!!

If it weren't for the flies in the wine, it could be a cute happy hour place. Hopefully more exposure will get this place on their feet. The food menu at the wine bar is pretty lackluster.

Love it here! Excellent service and cozy vibes. The menu is curated to complement the selection of wine offered. I adored the orange wine. You would never know that it is entirely vegan (this is a compliment!) The cheese board tastes as wonderful as it is photo worthy! I'll be back soon!

This bar is tucked inside Vroman's Bookstore (already one of the most charming and iconic bookstores in the area) so the entire experience feels like stepping into a warm, literary universe. You can browse for a new book, take in the bookstore's atmosphere, and then walk straight into the bar. Honestly, it's the perfect outing. What makes 1894 truly special is how intentionally it celebrates literature. Everything in the bar pays homage to the bookstore. The drink menu is full of clever, book-inspired names. You'll find cocktails like Pride and PearJudice Pride, Fifty Shades of Earl Grey, and other fun literary twists. Every drink feels like a little wink to readers, writers, and book lovers, and it adds such a unique charm to the experience. The vibe is super quaint and warm, dim lighting, and a creative atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. The wine is on the pricier side ($19-$21 per glass), but the quality delivers. Customer service was excellent. One of the bartenders spent time chatting with us. He pointed out a chalk artwork behind the bar a dramatic portrait he drew himself featuring expressive, literary-style faces, like Edgar Allan Poe, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, etc. It fits perfectly with the creative, bookish aesthetic of the bar. If you're into books, wine, and unique experiences, 1894 is a spot you absolutely can't miss. Perfect for a date, a solo unwind-with-a-book moment, or a fun night with friends who appreciate a good story and a great drink.

Being in a party of 4 girls coming from high tea, we were dressed in elegant dresses, first comment was asking if we were coming from church, followed by eye flutters, short "okay" with an upward inflation to a joke about the day, an impatient comment about hurrying up and trying the wine while we were talking, asked for water when we were out, were left to pour the rest of our wine, didn't ask how the food was all the while was attentive to the table behind us, the cherry on top comment was when we were discussing the bill at the end, he was hovering at the table behind ours, then when we were ready, we asked to split the bill into 2, my portion on mine and the rest on another card, he then said "this isn't like a drive through, we can't do it that way" so I asked him to explain his comment, cause it was passive agressive and rude. After he wasnt able to becuase he wasnt expecting me to call out his rude comment, I had to then break it down and specify what I had ordered, he then sold "okayyyy....so how much, cause we don't itemize?" I had to again express for him to specify how they do it cause he has still yet to explain where his attitude is coming from and explain how they do their check splits, from my understanding it just felt like he wanted to play dumb and make me to the math, one I did he was like "ohh, okay" should have asked for the manager but we paid and left, I hasnt had this experience before being a returning customer, but he needs an attitude adjustment as his attitude was completely out of pocket. Do better Manuel, you alone got your place of work a 1 star. The rest of the staff was kind, facility beautiful and food and wine was good. This restaurant is not reflected in the 1 star.

But this past weekend I sort of had a bit of a bummer of an experience. I ordered a small cheese platter for my wife and I to pick up for an at-home date night. I added some cheeses we loved when we were there in December - I dropped them in the notes of the order AND sent an email to confirm. When I didn't hear back I tried calling, which went straight to a recording. So, of course when I picked up the platter it wasn't what we wanted. I was told emails aren't answered on the weekend, they don't pick up the phone and they're still working out the system. Thwarted by three modes of communication. Pretty disappointing. And for the $120 price tag, I was a little underwhelmed. I probably would have been better off just buying the cheeses from them, and getting the crackers and the accoutrements somewhere else and assemble it myself at home. I'll probably still eat here because there are some solid dishes, and the back patio is a beautiful spot to bring the family (pup included), but I just won't be ordering a cheese platter again, unfortunately.
