Had another wonderful birthday dinner at Bistro de la Gare. Everything there is incredible. Finally tried their "death in the afternoon" champagne cocktail, highly recommend. Next time we have to remember to order the filet mignon tartare ahead of time, it's one of our favorites. Such a lovely evening.

I gave my wife a series of restaurant suggestions to go to for celebrating Father's Day. After going through several options, my wife decided she wanted to try a new French restaurant, so we went to Bistro de la Gare in South Pasadena. There was abundant street parking on a Sunday evening. I just came with my wife for date night as I already had a family Father's Day lunch earlier that day. The seating is somewhere between casual and upscale, and was a bit warm for a summer day. The staff were mostly nice, but definitely felt slow to respond to our requests at times. The food felt particularly slow to come out. We ended up sharing an appetizer and an entree. We shared a Gratin D'Aubergine (similar to an eggplant parmesan) and also a braised lamb shank. I was surprised the eggplant dish took 15 minutes and then the lamb shank took 45 minutes. The eggplant was quite nice, with marinara sauce and cheese. The braised lamb shank was solid. The lamb was super tender, and the mashed potatoes and sauce were quite flavorful. The bill was quite pricey for the level of food and service. The service was decent, the food was solid, but I was definitely hoping for higher quality food and service for that type of price. Nonetheless, the food is good.

An amazing meal from start to finish. The food was exceptional, and Chef Bruno was warm, gracious, and so knowledgeable about wine. His recommendations elevated the entire experience. It felt like a culinary dream, and we cannot wait to come back.

Food was amazing! I had the beets capaccio, liver, escargot. Main entree, steak was cooked perfectly, the sauce was delicious. Clam linguini definition the spot! I ordered fillet fish as well, was going to get it to go for my daughter and end up eating it!

De la Gare often refers to establishments near a train station and this one is just steps away from the Metro Gold Line stop. A friend of mine raves about this place, and it's been on my list. This charming little French-Italian restaurant offers fine dining in a casual setting. The décor gives off Parisian vibes with its European inspired artwork, French windows, and potted plants in the windowsills. Chef/owner Bruno Morin prepares dishes using organic ingredients selected from the local Farmer's market, which is held weekly outside the front door. My friend and I sat at the bar and ordered drinks while we contemplated what to eat. I decided to try the Une Nuit A St Germain - a Lychee Martini that was light & refreshing. Lorena, the darling bartender, recommended the Horse Soldier Bourbon, so my friend had that on the rocks. While sipping our cocktails, a regular sat next to us at the bar. We started an pleasant conversation with her. The food smelled wonderful, and I noticed how artfully presented each item was as it went by. Unfortunately it was a bit busy, so we opted to skip dinner and had another drink instead. This time I requested a French 75, which was very good. Even though I didn't get to try the food, I made a new friend. Everything in life happens for a reason. My original plans changed, so I ended up at the Bistro. She just got back in town and was going to go somewhere else but decided to come here instead. We both agreed that we'd come back at an earlier time and enjoy a delightful feast. *Street parking Corkage Fee: $35 1st bottle, $45 2nd bottle, 3 or more $100

I had the BEST birthday dinner here! The staff is so incredible, super kind and accommodating. The ambiance was exactly what I was looking for. Drinks were very well worth it and the food portions surprised me. I already miss the linguine, 100% coming back.

I miss eating French food so much and luckily I remember that I have a legit restaurant about 10 mins away from where I live. Not only the staff is super friendly and descriptive about the menu, their food is legit good , although I can't compare with the one in France, but this is good enough ! Their vibe is so chill and friendly like in Parisian cafe , but we didn't sit outside because California heat in summer is no joke . Parking is plenty on the street.

Everything at this cozy bistro is an experience to be had. Chef Bruno makes the best food. Everything is cooked to perfection. I can always taste each ingredient that goes into preparation. I personally enjoy the burrata salad and mushroom cream soup as starters. I also like the escargot. Last time I was there, I got the wagyu steak with fries and asparagus. I requested the steak medium well due to my pregnancy and it came out just at the perfect temperature, juicy with the most delicious crisp in the outside. The place itself is quaint and attractive with a nice and relaxing atmosphere and the service is always top notch with Lorena suggesting the best wine pairings. Their desserts are also to die for. Overall, I'd recommend this Bistro to anybody that likes authentic French fare.

I'd describe this place as California-French with rustic touches. The shaded outdoor patio is lovely and always inspires me to stay a bit longer. The soups remind me of my mother's, and the quiche is always packed with whatever vegetables are in season. Even the simple side salad with crisp greens dressed in a house-made lemon vinaigrette is bright and punchy. Beyond the café, there's a good size marketplace that feels like a European pantry. Shelves are lined with prepared foods and casseroles, wines, pastries, baked goods, artisanal pantry staples, seasonal gifts, and home goods. And a huge bonus for Cali, there's plenty of free parking all around. This area is quieter, making it an ideal spot to enjoy your meal al fresco.

Once you're seated and eating, if you want a beverage refill, you leave your hot meal to go stand in line (cashier is slow too, if they're even present), and WAIT in line to order another refill. All while your meal is getting cold and your conversation is disrupted. If you would rather drink water - oh yes, get that yourself too. The fig jam added a sweet and tangy twist that cut through the creaminess. The duck prosciutto was good but sadly only one small slice was provided. - French Onion Soup (4/5): Very hearty and warm dish to start the course. My gf preferred a stronger onion flavor but I found it fine. - Branzino et Ratatouille (4.5/5): Perfectly cooked fish, with distinct aromas from the vegetables and spices. The skin was crispy, but it would have been nicer if it was evenly crispy. Overall very flavorful and a good lighter dish option than the steak frites - Steak Frites (5/5): Ordered this medium rare and was not disappointed. Perfectly cooked and super juicy. The outside of the steak was nicely seared giving it a nicely crisp texture with richer flavors too. Paired super well with the sauce which had a distinct mushroomy flavor to it in addition to the peppercorn. Fries were very generous and crispy. - Creme Brulee (4/5): The Creme Brulee was a bit more runny than we were used to but the flavor was perfect. Breaking through the caramelized sugar was super satisfying. - Cheese Board (3.5/5): Pretty simple cheese board with bread, a fig jam, some nuts, and 2 cheeses. We were seated in the corner by the entrance making it feel more private than the other seats in the room, which was nice. It wasn't too loud either. Service was friendly and prompt. My friend had the pink crane which is bourbon based. Both cocktails were well balanced and tasty. Appetizers: Their famous ravioli: had very creamy sauce over 4 wobton skin ravioli with plump shrimp inside topped with shiitake mushrooms on top. It's a mini meal in itself! Also tried their grilled octopus, cooked perfectly with a nice crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. I ordered the bread plate and the BBQ butter was unique and really good. Friends ordered the griddle cakes and potato appetizers, both very good and decent portion sizes. For dinner my husband got the lamb (because they were out of the catch of the day which he was looking forward to), I got the pasta without prosciutto, friends got the shrimp and grits (head on shrimp hard to manage when they are covered in sauce but it was very tasty) and he got the same pasta dish as me with the prosciutto. We all agreed the food overall was better than good. The service felt strange. We were greeted with a friendly smile but once we started ordering dinner and made a joke about wanting to make a substitution (which we knew ahead they don't do) it felt like things changed. Maybe it was earlier when one of us asked if they could close the front door because it was drafty and cold (no they can't close the front door). Can't quite put a finger on it. Our reservation was at 7:15. By 8:30 the place was empty except for us. We were finishing up but weren't done. We weren't offered a dessert menu but instead they started putting up the chairs and by 8:45 they turned some of the lights off. They close at 9 but it was obvious they all wanted to get things closed up so we got our check and left. Overall, $250 for 4 people produced a tasty meal for each of us but in Pasadena where we have a LOT of choices we probably won't be back. Especially when a place states "no substitutions" and they also won't accept any requests for meat to be cooked to a certain temp. To me that seems to indicate the kitchen staff is either handcuffed, or they are unable to act on the fly if someone needs to make a change or wants their meet cooked medium well. I want to 100% enjoy my meal and experience when I go out and spend good money and Holy Saints wasn't that for me.

Location 5 stars: In Pasadena, on the West side of S. arroyo Parkway, just North of E. California…read moreBlvd. They have their own free parking lot! Almost unheard of in busy Pasadena. Very convenient. Venue 4 stars: Rustic indoor and outdoor seating with Southwestern motif. They are only open on certain Friday and Saturday evenings, so be sure to call in to make sure they are open before you go. Service 3.5 stars: Friendly and polite. Our specific server was super nice, but not very efficient or attentive. Food 4 stars: Sophisticated comfort food with a Southern flare, using fresh local ingredients. Small menu of 6 main plates and about 10 appetizers and sides. Concepts and plating are unique and creative. We had the Jambalaya Arancini (good), the Brussels Sprouts (great), the Brie Eggrolls (good) as appetizers. We also had the Beef Bourgogne (great), the Chicken Katsu Benedict (great), the grits (good), the Blackened Catfish (good), and the Baby Back Ribs (just OK) as our main plates. Drinks 3 stars: Beer and wine and a few Low ABV (Low Alcohol By Volume Content) cocktails (made with wine and prosecco, no hard liquor), soft drinks and tea/coffee. They do recommend wine pairing for each of their main plates. The Bottom Line 4 stars: Pleasant and unique experience, given the reservations that I have noted above. High potential concept that could benefit from further development and scaling. Recommended!
