Farro Salad and Filet w/Bok Choy
    Sandra G.

What a great neighborhood gem! Decided to try this restaurant out for weeknight dinner and so glad we did. Started with the Butternut Squash Soup topped with chipotle chocolate foam ... and words cannot describe the delightful flavors that you taste We then shared the farro salad served with chipotle honey dressing. Serving was enough to share and ingredients were fresh and flavorful. Also shared the filet with bok choy and meat dish which was tender cooked to perfection. Service was spot on, Chris (hope got name right) very personable and enhanced dining experience. Highly recommend Deluxe 1717 and plan on returning soon.

I live in Pasadena and often drive across Washington Blvd, passing Deluxe 1717 many times without really noticing it--until one evening I saw a good crowd inside. That caught my attention. The restaurant has both outdoor patio seating and indoor dining that overlooks the patio, with an open-air feel since there's no barrier between the two spaces. I decided to check out the menu, and it looked great--not cheap, but definitely reasonable for the quality they offer. I brought my daughter for our first visit after noticing they offer happy hour, which I like to try before diving into the full menu. My thinking is: if they can nail the small plates, the full menu is worth exploring. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with friendly faces and made to feel completely welcome. I appreciated that no one made us feel awkward for just ordering from the happy hour menu--though we ended up ordering quite a bit anyway! We had the Chipotle Chicken Taquitos, Carne Asada Nachos, Brussels Sprouts, and a couple of glasses of wine. One detail that really stood out: the sommelier came over to check on us and chat briefly about the wine. That personal touch made me feel seen and valued. I love when a place treats you like more than just a table number. As for the food: * The Brussels sprouts were flavorful and cooked well, though a bit heavy on sauce and a touch too crispy for my preference--I'd ask for less sauce next time, but I'd still reorder them. * The taquitos had great toppings, but something about the chipotle flavor didn't land for us. We're taquito lovers and usually finish every bite, so this was a rare miss. That said, I'd give them another try if someone I'm with wants to order them. * The nachos were delicious--fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. I'd absolutely order them again. My daughter enjoyed the steak on them, though I personally wasn't a big fan--but I'm picky with meat. I'd probably try it with chicken next time or go full vegetarian. The freshness and flavor throughout the meal stood out, and there are several other menu items I'm looking forward to trying--especially the pulled pork sandwich, which I think my parents would love. I'm already planning to bring them here for a visit. All in all, I'm so happy to have discovered such a beautiful, welcoming, and quality-driven restaurant right on Washington Blvd in Pasadena. Thank you to the owners and staff--we appreciate you and will definitely be back!

Service was impeccable. FOOD was excellent! Brussel sprouts were perfectly cooked and the chips for the nachos were amazingly crispy since I believe they fry the tortillas in-house. Fiet had a nice chard flavor and very tender and the pork belly was cooked to perfection and not overyly sweer. For someone who cooks at home I was impressed.

The food was yum. We got the deluxe breakfast which comes with diced sweet potatoes with bell peppers and eggs your way with crispy bacon. The drinks were awesome. I had a hibiscus mimosa with natural tea, you can taste the the cinnamon in the hibiscus, excellent pairing with champagne. The environment was super clean, I felt like I was in Italy. Red Booth seats are brand new, so comfy. It was December in LA so a chilly morning but they kept it warm with the lamp heaters. Option to eat al fresco or on the booths and tables inside. Service was prompt and friendly. Will be coming back again!

Had a friend who lived in Altadena area recommend I try Deluxe 1717, and we were meeting a friend for brunch, who happens to live around there, so the stars aligned and I made a reservation and we headed over to meet her there for brunch on Saturday. We walked up to the restaurant and it was not very crowded, as it does feel more like a quaint local area that people from all over are not necessarily clamoring to drive to. So we were able to get seated right away (didn't seem to care there was a reservation as there wasn't any electronic check in system I noticed). So we were seated and brought water while we looked at the menu. There was only one server for the whole area, and she was definitely earning her money. We asked for recommendations, which she provided when we were ready to order, and we ended up going with the breakfast burrito with carnitas and the arepa benedict, also with carnitas. The burrito was a nice size, had a good amount of carnitas meat in it, and plenty of potatoes. BY itself, it was ok, not memorable, definitely needed the salsa to give it a little more flavor. But the burrito did not stand out, especially at its price point. The arepas benedict was more or less the same, albeit with a poached egg on top. The arepa, itself, was decent, but the overall benedict left much to be desired. Overall, Deluxe 1717 is a local restaurant serving cuban ish food with an indoor and patio area. The food really did not stand out, and it did take a while to get everything done with only one server working (again, she was working hard). Our server was very nice and that always goes a long way, but really cannot recommend the restaurant for brunch. Maybe dinner is better but brunch was not it, unfortunately

I recently did some research around Pasadena to find an excellent place for brunch, where my friends from Diamond Bar/Walnut could meet us coming from Redondo Beach. We are vegan and my friends are not, so Deluxe 1717 seemed to be a great place to try, so I made a reservation for us all to go last Saturday. All of our expectations were not only met, but exceeded. The location is ideal, very easy to find parking nearby. Upon entering, we were seated on their beautiful shaded patio area, where we were able to sit with our dogs, watch the people walking by and enjoy a wonderful brunch. I ordered the vegan breakfast burrito and plantains. Both were outstanding, as were the dishes for each of the rest of my party. We were fortunate to have Joanna as our server. She is amazing and went above and beyond providing excellent service. I highly recommend this outstanding establishment. We will be returning again soon and are customers for life.

We've wanted to come here for a while and we wish we had sooner, it's great! First off, our server, Logan, was EVERYTHING! Fun and knowledgeable and helpful with suggestions and did I say fun? Made our experience nice from the start. Casey (floor manager, maybe?) was cool too. Very welcoming to first timers. Now the food....holy cow! The menu has starters and mains, but we opted for a few shared plates from the starters. Grilled shrimp and potato skewers came with two sauces, and yeah, they were separately sauced so you can taste both! One peanut and one cilantro jalapeño...both delicious! Wednesday is taco special night so we had three snapper tacos for $17.17 (get it?) and they were yummy. Love that the corn tortillas are a little soft so they don't break all over the place. Still hungry so we got the nachos-skirt steak and lots of stuff piled on. The leftovers ended up being my husband's lunch today so I can't speak to how they held up but I almost ate them for breakfast, as good as they smelled! Wish we had room for dessert, but next time, as there definitely will be a next time! Wednesday is also wine night 17% off bottles! We left just as the jazz guy started but he was good even tho he has to fight the street noise. Fabulous spot, try it out!

Grilled shrimp on an Asian Ceasar salad. Untraditional and Amazing!

We loved the food and the atmosphere at Deluxe 1717. This place feels special and intimate. You can tell that they care about every guest that walks through the door and the service was excellent! My husband and I started with the free flatbread that is brought to the table. We cleared that basket before they even brought us water. I then had the seared ahi tuna salad and it was complex, the sauces were different, heavy on the anchovy but Delicious! We also had a shrimp Caesar salad that was not at all traditional. We mopped those off quickly as well. I got the pork chop in this gorgeous sauce over creamy blue cheese polenta and my husband got the Cuban bowl with carnitas and perfectly pickled red onions. There is so much we haven't tried yet, but we will be back. Now Go!!! It's good!

Been aiming to come here and finally we came by on Saturday night. It was not full so we didn't have to wait at all. We got seated right away. The waiter who served us was very friendly but he was disappearing a lot whenever we need to refill our water. Their free bread and bread chips are so good! I might check out the meat market next door where they got the chip bread. Parking is in the back or street parking, there's plenty of them. Asian fish and chips has a nice crispiness but the batter seasoning is too spicy for me. Peruvian chicken is so good and I finish it all! Yuca chips are bland tho.. Cuban sandwich is just mediocre..nothing really special. Will come back when they update their menu because it seems like they alternate once in a while!

Super Deluxe! A wonderful chef, a sommelier and a front of house manager walk into a room - they deliver super deluxe 1717! Chef Onil is killing it! with his causal neighborhood hidden gem located in north east Pasadena. Nice interior and exterior patio dining full of neighborhood regulars open for brunch and dinner. Tandoori salmon to Cuban bowls to roasted chicken to even nachos on the menu and watermelon salad. Wonderful mix of casual menu staple items like their deluxe burger and Cubano to some wonderful rotating chef driven creations from fresh seafood to some of the best selections of meat for the money. All in this wonderful casual family and doggy friendly cafe. Their FOH manager is so friendly and accommodating! She should be the benchmark for hospitality. Warm, sweet yet knowledgeable and attentive. Great service staff too. Their sommelier Jeff is also super friendly and definitely a pro at wine! He has a wonderful friendly approach to wine which makes you feel so comfortable! You can even purchase bottles to take home of a wine that you might fall in love with! Super casual atmosphere - you can dress up and stop for a quick bite to eat before a show or come in shorts and tshirt and still feel welcomed here. Great for brunch too and dog friendly patio!. They have a wonderful dessert menu - their pastry chef makes the best orange flan hands down! Everyone was ordering the chocolate cake too which I am going to try next! Live music Wednesday nights and they have wine pairing dinners on some Sundays (check their website). Plus a killer brunch! Plenty of street parking in this cozy neighborhood. Cool thing is they support their neighboring famous meat butcher as well as Bloomfield ice cream by featuring some of their items on their menu. The trio of chefs from nearby Altaeats, Bacchus and deluxe 1717 are reinventing the food scene in north east Pasadena/altadena with great food, service, drink and prices that don't break the pocket book.

Deluxe 1717 is our restaurant of choice anytime my I and/or my husband are in the area (we live 70 miles away, or else we'd be there all the time)! We even went there for brunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary after attending service in the church where we got married in LA - sure, there are tons of great LA options we could have gone with, but there is something extra special about Deluxe. The food is beyond excellent, with a varied and creative menu. The wine list is unique and offers great pairing options. The service is always friendly and attentive. All this, in a charming ambiance. Well worth the trip every time! I've mostly been there for brunch, savoring dishes like smoked salmon arepa benedict, roasted cauliflower and leek quiche, mushroom quiche, seasonal waffles, Bolivian empanada, Cuban sandwich, burrata, tuna carpaccio, and my favorite, olive oil poached wild mushrooms with forbidden rice. Their quiche of the day comes with locally sourced greens that melt in your mouth. Their dinner menu is also fabulous, such as the Deluxe nachos, grilled hanger steak carne asada, Peruvian grilled chicken, Cuban bowl, miso carbonara. Favorite desserts include their Thai tea crème brulé and strawberry rhubarb galette. Drinks I or friends/family have enjoyed: rosé by the glass, exotic fruit mimosas, hibiscus (with or without champagne!), and reds like Miroballi Pinot Noir, La Bastide Cote Du Rhone and Brick Mason Red Blend. Aside from brunch and dinner, they frequently do special events ranging from "Thursty" Thursdays with fun appetizers, multi-course dinners with pairings, themed menus and drink, and holiday parties. The space is classy and cozy, with comfy indoor seating and walls filled with a fun blend of artwork, as well as a cute patio. The location is convenient to access while also not congested. Above all, Deluxe is run by wonderful people. Onil, the owner, is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet, with infectiously positive energy. He is an absolute delight to be around! The staff are all so lovely and warm, in addition to providing top-notch meals, service and wine pairing suggestions that are on point! They also care for their community. Notably, in the aftermath of the Eaton Fire earlier this year, Deluxe hosted free neighborhood meals for their community and first responders, collected donations to help affected home and business owners, supported fundraising efforts, and more.

We had a reservation so we were seated right away on the second floor, just above the bar. The music was a little on the loud side so conversation was a little strained. The food was absolutely amazing. Our server was very friendly and informative but was not quite as attentive as we would expect for an establishment like this. This was our first time here, so we had to try the Asparagus Fries. The asparagus was cooked to perfection but the batter did not have much flavor. Members of our party ordered the California Salad, a Veggie Burger, the Meatloaf and a Picante Pizza. The California Salad was smaller than expected but delicious. The Veggie Burger was excellent! The Meatloaf was the hit of the table. It was so good that my wife did not offer a taste to any of us. She was in food Heaven. The pizza was exactly as described and tasted wonderful. For food, we started with the bacon deviled eggs and shrimp taquitos. Those deviled eggs were lightly fried, which was different, then had apple wood smoked bacon on top, just a really tasty bite. The shrimp taquitos were also not what you would expect, nice and light but still very good. Entrees we went with the center cut fillet and the prime rib dip with swiss cheese on a brioche bun. That sandwich just melts if your mouth after dipping it in the jous, and the cheese was the perfect accompiament. The fillet was cooked perfect as well, coming out medium rare. Overall, great restaurant in Pasadena. Definitely get the Mai Tai, Devine eggs and prime rib dip. Taquitos were good and, if you're feeling like another hg er appetizer, definitely a way to go . The fillet, also great but I feel you can get it anywhere.

They had the game and we were seated behind a divider that was away from the TV and the bar area. First and foremost, the waitress was nice. She told us that we couldn't order anything beyond the brunch menu until 2pm and that also applied to the cocktails. Fine, my friend and I ordered what was on the menu and hung out until our 3rd party arrived. We were talking and had to talk a little louder given the atmosphere on the other side of the divider, which wasn't a problem for us. The experience took a nosedive when our initial waitress swapped shifts with another waitress. We had to close out tab with initial waitress and start a new tab with new waitress, which wasn't an issue for us. We ordered a few rounds of drinks and were trying to still talk amongst ourselves. However, we were hushed and told by our new waitress to quiet down a few times. I don't know what Karens were sitting on the other side of the divider, but that side of the restaurant was beaming with loud cheers and noises from the other patrons over the big game. I thought this was sort of ironic given the atmosphere of the restaurant and we couldn't even laugh amongst ourselves, without being warned by the killjoy police (our new waitress). The food was okay and the drinks were pretty good, but I'll pass on this place, since they seem very uniform with their rules. Strangely enough, a former dating prospect suggested this place to me 6 months ago, but it's stuck up like he was. The new waitress definitely wasn't happy to be there, and it showed. We spent more than $250 that day, and we'll gladly take our money to other options west of this place in the future.

LATE REVIEW…read more Finding little neighborhood gems when it comes to food has always been an exciting experience for me. Having family alongside makes the journey more special. We chose Holy Saints to announce our baby's gender with our parents and we had an amazing time during our intimate dinner here. The restaurant's ambiance was the perfect combination of homey and inviting. It is a smaller place and the number of tables are limited so I highly suggest making a reservation when dining here. During our dinner, it was a bit difficult to have a full blown conversation as the place was packed with guests when we came plus the loud background music that was playing the whole night. Service and food were nothing but amazing! Their menu is very limited. Maybe not everyone will appreciate that, but I think it is more intentional on what is being served to the table. Our highlight of the night was the Grandpa's Pan Roasted Duck Magret Au Poivre for sure. It was so tender on the inside and crispy on the outer edges! We never had a meal like that elsewhere and we will for sure be back just because of it.

Dishes tried: - Sourdough bread and bbq butter, solid for a bread dish, butter is definitely unique, reminded me of Lay's BBQ chips in a good way - Grandma's Risotto w/ prosciutto, okay for me? Prosciutto was a supplement here and needs it imo for that oomph, otherwise a fine risotto dish but would pass unless it speaks to you - Barnyard Bolognese - a bit underwhelming to start, just too one-note for me, but it eventually grew on me and would get it again if I wanted a rich pasta - Duck Magret Au Poivre - easily my favorite dish here and what I would come back for and recommend for people, tender duck with the right amount of fat and a great sauce. Fries are a bit thicker than I would like, but still enjoyed it. - Seasonal apple pie - more of a danish if I had to describe it to someone, but nice texture and more importantly, not too sweet!

We ended up at Magnolia House for a late lunch/early dinner. They also serve breakfast/brunch only on weekends. Walked in around 4:30pm and we were greeted by Brian, one of the managers. Brian was the standout star of the whole experience! His energy was exceptional and he is such a great conversationalist. He checked on us several times throughout our meal and made sure we were doing well. He on his own was HANDS DOWN a five star human being. At first, he wanted to seat us in the back corner but I told him the table was too small and he accommodated us with a bigger table. Our server Kiana came up to the table with a pleasant smile and greeting to take our drink orders. I got a glass of cranberry juice along with some water. My son got the American Dream cocktail along with some water. We skipped on dessert. From 4-6pm, they have a happy hour menu with some of their cocktails and shareable plates. The portions are just a bit smaller and the prices are a little lower. It's a good way to sample different items. I think we got a good variety of food to enjoy. To start, we got the Little Gem Salad. It was such a unique combination of flavors and SUPER delicate/light. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The next starter was the Zucchini and Feta Fritters, which was good but not the best out of everything else we ordered. The zucchini was a bit mushy but the batter it was fried in was crispy. Another starter we shared were the Moroccan Spiced Chicken Wings. These wings are gigantic and very flavorful. They definitely pack some heat, so be careful. I don't think the A/C was NOT working to begin with, so the place was already hot. The wings made us sweat even more. For entrées, we got the burger and the pork belly. Brian said they are known for their burger and after taking the first bite, it's clear as to why. It was absolutely PERFRCTION. So delicious! The bun, the meat, the cheese, the onions, and the crispy bacon...all of it mixed together into the perfect burger. I had wanted to add some mushrooms and avocado to it, but Kiana said they were unable to do it. I also asked for lettuce and she said that would be an extra charge. What extra charge for lettuce? We still got charged for avocado when the bill came, but they took it off once we mentioned it. The pork belly was also very tender, flavorful, and crispy. It's just hard to compete with the burger! We also got an order of the Belgian Fries to share and we were both pleasantly surprised at how good they were. The fries are salty and cut pretty thick. The sauce that came on the side was so yummy. We asked for a small extra cup to-go. All in all, the food was great and we liked everything. The vibe of the restaurant wasn't really all that for me. Brian genuinely made up for anything that was lacking in the atmosphere. He is such a wonderful asset to the restaurant and their company. The restaurant itself has been here for about 15 years now and it used to be a very old house. You can tell when you look around. They did a good job with the renovations, but you can see the different areas/rooms. I think they tried to keep the casual comfort of a home, while making it a slightly elevated experience. It was very clean everywhere, especially the bathrooms. They have one gender neutral bathroom, one for men, and one for women. No private parking, so you'll have to park on the street and put money in the kiosk. They also had an outdoor seating. Pretty BIG, only took picture of one side. They also have 2 small TVs. In the bar area and inside their cute lounge. I normally like to try new places, especially when I'm in Pasadena, so I'm not sure if I'll come back here. Maybe if Brian is working, it would definitely be worth stopping by again! Thank you all..

There was plenty of parking behind the restaurant and it's located in a cute street with other restaurants and a movie theater. I started off with some wine and ordered the Moscato. If you enjoy sweeter wines, I highly recommend it! The menu is small but everything we ordered was really good! We shared the focaccia, Caesar salad, and pesto pasta. The focaccia was warm and the pesto pasta was delicious. For the dessert, we tried the key lime tart and it was so good too! The photo booth was such a fun way to end the evening. I can't wait to visit again!

Bess is very cute and the restaurant has a lovely ambiance. The service: Our server was friendly but inattentive and busy running about which I found odd as the restaurant seemed to be appropriately staffed. We never got our water jug refilled and we had to flag our waitress down for the check. The table next to us had to do the same. This was in stark contrast with the outdoor tables who were well taken care of, I could see this through the glass window front as we were seated at a bar. The wait time for food: I had read through the reviews before coming so I set my timer to see for myself. Our food was served in 45 minutes, not exactly ideal. I understand food takes time, but for such a busy restaurant the turn around was lengthy. I was not the only person to notice this. Many tables were looking around waiting for their food. Towards the end of our meal I heard a woman complaining to the staff about their wait. The food: I enjoyed my lasagna, the lemon ricotta was flavorful, I wish they had topped it with a bit less cheese as that was a bit overpowering but I personally liked it a lot 4.5/5. The chicken parm was decent but my partner was not so impressed, he said it's a 3/5. Parking can be found in the back lot behind the store fronts.
