One of the small town delights in LA has got to be Mission Street in South Pasadena -- lots of small independent shops stretching a couple blocks before and after the train tracks. When shopping tires you out, Mike & Anne's is a great lunch spot. Though I usually don't like eating outside, I'll make an exception here; there's an awesome patio with lots of sun and shade (and the indoor seating is a bit gloomy for lunchtime). You cannot beat the breakfast plates here, but I am partial to the cheeseburger/fries combo. Meat, cheese and bun are just right. My buddy had the breakfast burrito and insisted that I include it in this review. The elephant in the room? Parking. It's impossible. Food here is very safe, trite, hackneyed California cuisine beaten to death like a worn out horse. It's not ready bad and not very good offending no one, but food that is boring and not particularly drop dead flavourful. I wasn't super hungry and decided to order more of the sides. 1) French Fries with some skin on, looking rustic, had a touch of that ineffable earthy potato flavour. Asked for extra crispy, but just got a bit crispy so their default fries must be rather limp. Standard ketchup in a steel ramekin. 2) Roasted Golden Beet & Arrugula Salad had sweet, softer, smooth texture, Arrugula had a fibrous, good green herbal, peanut oil scented flavour. Not too funky, creamy goat cheese. Roasted walnut halves. All napped with a subtle Champagne Vinaigrette. Portion was about half of what would be expected in other comparable restaurants. 3) Bread Pudding: The bread was spongy, moist, eggy almost like a flan but lacked a deeper dairy, milkiness as well as lack of hints of warm spices such as cinnamon, allspice, ginger, cloves. Bland would describe the general overall flavour. Topped with cream rich ice cream. Scattering of blueberry, blackberry, strawberry. At home, I drizzled on Grand Marnier for more citrus cognac aromatics. 1-3a) Iced Tea The food here seems to be the Midwest version of what California cuisine should be. Middle of the road, steady as she goes, don't rock the boat. Our waitress was efficient, helpful, thoughtful in a business-like manner which facilitated our group of 8. The male helper with a moustache and the inked hand was great at keeping our glasses topped off. 3 stars for a safe, not overly effusive food that does not offend. I've been to Mike & Anne's Restaurant many times, so this visit was a little disappointing. I ordered the huevos rancheros, which I've had before and loved, but this time it lacked flavor. Considering it's a more expensive spot, I expected better. I still ate it, but I wasn't happy with it. My friend ordered something different and her dish looked much better she really enjoyed it! The customer service was good, even though we had to change tables twice because of a meeting happening. Went to have brunch with our neighbors and they brought us here to this cute little cafe. There's indoor/outdoor seating and dog friendly. Just came for brunch. I am amazed of how nice this little restaurant was. They got a huge outdoor patio for dining. So if you are a fans of outdoor dining. This is a good place for you. Parking is definitely one of the drawbacks of this restaurants. Only street parking were available for this restaurant. I came during a weekday morning, it's already not an easy job to find a parking spot. Can't imagine coming here on a weekend Food is alright. Typical brunch menu and food. The choices is pretty limited for a breakfast place. It's lacking flexibility in their menu. Customizable menu like omelette or scramble would be a big plus. I highly recommend the Brick Chicken. I know it may sound a bit unusual, but it's a generous and delicious plate. You get a large portion of chicken -- a breast and a thigh -- served with lentils and mushrooms. The seasoning is excellent, and it feels both satisfying and wholesome. For starters, don't miss the Mediterranean salad with hummus. It's a plate of creamy hummus topped with a bright Mediterranean salad, served with pita on the side. Absolutely delicious and easily a standout -- truly to die for. The restaurant has a full bar with great drinks and a solid wine selection. I ordered a mojito and asked to substitute vodka for rum, and they didn't hesitate for a second. It was perfectly made and refreshing. The service is exceptional. While dining, I noticed two guests come in, and at least three servers greeted them by name, asked how they were doing, and wished them a Happy New Year. That kind of genuine recognition speaks volumes about the staff and the relationships they build with their guests. The bar area has warm, cozy lighting and also offers dinner seating, which is a really nice touch. The rest of the dining area is spacious and comfortable. There's also a large outdoor patio with heat lamps -- perfect for brunch or cooler evenings. Just bring a jacket if you plan to sit outside. The restaurant has two fairly large, all-gender bathrooms, which is convenient and appreciated. Parking is the only challenge -- it's street parking only, and it can be tough. Upon arriving, the hostess welcomed my friend and I, and we were able to be seated within a few minutes. Service was fairly quick, and I ordered their Farmer's Scramble. The Farmer's Scramble was ready within 10-15 minutes, and overall, everything was as expected from eggs to roasted potatoes. In the scrambled eggs were mushrooms, which are probably my weakness but also ham, which is one I often dislike. Overall, the ham contributed to the saltiness, and I found the scrambled eggs too salty to enjoy. There was also ketchup, which was slightly necessary to make the eggs tolerable. The buttered toast was a nice side, and towards the end, the servers were quick and prompt with the check. Overall, whether dining inside in the shaded, darker atmosphere or the outside patio by the sunlit fountain, both environments are enjoyable. Despite this, the price versus food quality left a bit more than atmosphere to be desired, though, and I'm sad to have had higher expectations of Mike & Anne's prior to visiting. read more

One thing to note: there's only one espresso machine in the entire restaurant, so if your table orders multiple espresso-based drinks, expect them to come out one at a time. No oat milk available, only almond and whole milk. Their yogurt bowls use Greek yogurt. The Lemon Ricotta Pancakes were just okay; nothing standout. For two people, our total for 2 almond-milk lattes, 1 yogurt bowl, a garden omelette, side of bacon, and one side of a lemon ricotta pancake came to $65 before tip, over $77 with tip. Pretty pricey for what it was. Ambiance is clean and pleasant, service was friendly. Overall, though, nothing felt extraordinary for the price. It simply felt like... Came back here for dinner and decided to update my review. Short rib - 5/5 - this was so amazing! Highly recommend this dish. It was cooked perfectly and everything in the dish had so much flavor - perfectly creamy mashed potatoes, roasted garlic bits, the roasted onion was to die for, and the green beans were just the right amount of cooked. Pancakes were so fluffy and delicious and I really enjoyed the garden omelette filled with goat cheese. As others have noted, however, we did experience some issues with ordering. They lost our order so we had to wait a little longer than normal. But the waiter was very nice once he caught the mistake and comped our drinks for us. Parking; there was plenty of street parking on a Saturday night. Service: our waitress came to our table 3 times, once to get our drink orders, a second time for the food orders, and another time for the bill and to get our dessert orders. The young men cleaning up the tables and plates were awesome. They were the ones who brought out desserts, food, and refilled our drinks. Food: My husband got the macaroni and cheese as an appetizer. We were out riding our bikes and initially had intended to go to a restaurant in San Marino, but decided to stop at Mike & Anne's instead. They didn't have a big bike rack outside, but a small one that was already taken. However, the host let us bring our bikes to the back of the patio along one railing. That worked perfectly because we could also see them from the patio. My husband ordered the fried chicken sandwich and he loved that. That was great because now he will want to go back again. It even has a lovely outdoor patio with umbrellas ,and flowers although as it was in the high 90's so we ate inside, but some other time when it's cooler we'll eat outside.It has a lovely ambiance both inside and outside, my husband and I loved this charming restaurant, and the wait staff were very friendly and fast, and the food was delicious. My husband had a very good turkey sandwich , and excellent greens, and an Arnold Palmer to drink, and I had a very good Seared Ahi Tuna Nicoise Salad, everything was excellent We don't live in Pasadena, we live in in Santa Monica, so it's a bit of a distance, but we'll get back, and perhaps with our daughter when she visits from Arizona next time , she'll love it. It's been a real minute since I've rated a place a 3 star but I have to be honest about my experience here because I feel like this should have been a 4 or even 5 star place. The fact that it's in such a nice area located in South Pasadena, I was very surprised by what took place. I was lucky enough to find parking in the structure below but very limited on parking. When first walking in was not greeted or anything right away, I will say it is a very lovely ambiance but that was as good as it gets. It seemed like a good while before getting greeted and when we did, I ordered water with lemon and a cocktail drink. Received the waters and that was pretty much it. No lemons and waited a while before a waiter came over to us. By the time our server came over to us. I asked for straws, lemons and our cocktail. He took a while and finally dropped those things off to us. After placing our order, we waited probably about 45 minutes to receive our food. The omelet was overcooked and dry underneath, the French toast was okay. The pancakes were probably the only item that tasted good. Server was nice but I think he was just too busy to really get good service. I really wish I could have had a better experience, and I most likely will not be coming back. read more
