The Raymond 1886 is always elegant and welcoming and delicious! We got reservations this weekend with friends to celebrate a retirement and two anniversaries. We decided to spring for valet parking for $8 but then realized there's 2 hour street parking for free just beyond the hedges in front of the restaurant afterwards. Oh well, it was a special occasion. We were seated right at 6 (the time of our reservation). The hostess also made sure we knew our server's name and brought us ice water. (You can choose bottled or tap). Our server's name Jennifer was friendly and attentive throughout the evening. We ordered the horseradish crusted salmon and the steak frites and our friends ordered the truffle mushroom tagliatelle and the filet mignon. We were all extremely happy and satisfied with our entrees. The portions are perfect. No doggy bags needed and no room for dessert. I really enjoyed the broccolini that accompanied my salmon--it was cooked just enough to retain a little crunch. The savory sauce on the salmon was subtle and complimentary to the flaky fish. We sat in the bar room of this restaurant that used to be a house. The patio looked lovely too, especially on a summer evening so maybe we'll choose that next time. The pesto pasta was over sauced served with dry chicken I couldn't even force down. The brick chicken was better but not enough to get me to come back. The Raymond 1886 was such a pleasant experience. Not just by the food, but by our wonderful waitress, Jeanette. She was extremely kind and entertaining throughout the entire night. She took care of my family so well and checked in with us often. And she's extremely funny! You'll be lucky to have her as your waitress when coming here, she did a phenomenal job and would honestly request her when I come back here.   Tuna Crispy Rice (4/5) Great starter! Loved how the tuna had a small kick of spice from the jalapeno and sriracha. Generous amounts of fresh tuna, which is great! I just would have wished the rice was a bit crispier. Rice was a bit soft, but overall didn't take away from the dish and presentation   Bread & Butter (5/5) One thing that fascinated me about the bread and butter was the fact that there was pineapple in the butter. I know it sounds a bit off, but the sweetness of the butter really elevated the dish! It stands out so much and couldn't help but notice how unique it is compared to other standard butters. Would recommend trying it!   Steak Frites (5/5) Steak was medium rare and perfectly cooked. Fries were crispy and freshly topped with herbs. Solid dish.   Dynamite Tots (5/5) Just like it's name, the flavor was absolutely dynamite. I never had tater tots with ebi mayo or eel sauce, but that's how I want my tots from now on. Each tot was crisp to perfection and passed the crunch test for sure. Love the Asian flavor and touch that was brought to the dish, highly recommend.   Dulce de Leche Creme Brûlée (5/5)  The perfect way to end your meal here. Creamy, delicious and not too sweet! I've been to The Raymond twice now, and really enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back again soon. First and foremost - 5/5 for the service and ambiance. The hostess and our server (both occasions we dined here) were extremely friendly and really made our dining experience very enjoyable. Very lovely ambience. First time we came here was for my wife's birthday. We came for brunch and it happened to be Mother's Day Weekend. We were a bit bummed because the only reason I made reservations to have brunch here was specifically because they had Crab Cake Benedicts on the menu (my wife's favorite). However, when we arrived I noticed it was not on the menu. I asked our server and he mentioned it was removed literally only for that day, and replaced with a "special" Smoked Salmon Benedict. I really wish they had just added the Smoked Salmon Benedict as a special, rather than replace the popular Crab Cake offering all together. Anyhow - frustrations aside, we ordered the Smoked Salmon Benedict, and honestly it was still very very good. My wife was happy with it and that's all that mattered lol. The smoked salmon was tasty, and the eggs were cooked perfectly, nice and runny for both of us. The potatoes were amazing. Very crispy! For dessert, we got the chocolate cookie skillet with the ice cream. I can't remember the exact name of it, but it was really good. Tip: ask for extra ice cream. The scoop it comes with is a little small compared to the size of the cookie. We still felt unfulfilled though, and so we came back 2 weeks later for brunch a 2nd time, and this time we called ahead to make sure they had the crab cake Benedicts back on the menu. Couldn't risk it! LOL. The crab cake Benedict was good. Maybe I set my expectations too high haha, but it was still good. My wife and I both ordered it. This time, my eggs were unfortunately way over cooked. I didn't want to complain or anything, so I just ate it. Luckily my wife's eggs were runny and cooked perfectly. Also the potatoes were not as crispy this time. Conclusion - The food is good. First time we came here it was better than the 2nd time, and this was only 2 weeks apart, and ordering basically the same thing, eggs Benedicts. As mentioned, 2nd time my eggs were over cooked. We still really LOVED dining here and definitely will be back soon to try their dinner since both times we came here was for brunch only. The ambience was really amazing truly. We've only sat on the patio, but it was very peaceful, not too loud, and felt quite romantic. Parking: There is valet, but both times we came for brunch (around 10:30am) and found street parking very close by. We had happy hour Cosmos and it's obvious that the ingredients were fresh. We started with the Alien Pool Party and Charred Sunset, both were delish! Round 2 included the Stomazzi (perfectly refreshing) and 1886 Old Fashioned. You can tell how much thought went into each specialty cocktail, from the syrups to the ice (ask your server why!). The crudo and corn ribs caught our eye and the Brad & butter service was recommended to us; we opted to try all 3 and I'm glad we did. It was a great was to get a taste of the kitchen's range. The bread & butter service was the highlight of the appetizers, warm and fresh bread paired with a sweet and savory butter made fresh daily! Ended up staying through dinner service and I'm glad we did! My birthday dinner this week will be our last visit. My wife's filet, ordered medium-rare, was perfect. My steak frites, however, also ordered medium-rare, had not even a hint of pink and one end was literally a dry, tough hunk of charcoal. I should have known when the server warned me my plate was very hot that my steak had been sitting under a heat lamp, turning to shoe leather, while my wife's filet was being prepared. It's really aggravating to spend $200 for what should be a memorable meal only to be served burnt meat. (I learned long ago that returning a poorly prepared steak is dangerous. It ruins the pace of the meal and you never know what you'll get. I guess the solution is to never order steak anywhere. Should have had the fish.) Outdoor seating was nice. Service was OK but not great. Looong lull after ordering water, another looong lull after ordering drinks. Valet is $8 but apparently you can just self-park. read more

Every corner is cuter than the next, thoughtfully designed and set up like a friendly neighbors home ready to host. The multiple patio spots are so lovely for a nice day (and enjoyable patio fireplace for those brisk sub 70 SoCal days as well). The interior is so warm and inviting it instantly makes you feel comfortable and the bar is so enticing it always begs the question 'one more?' Clifton and Brenda were both so hospitable and attentive, and really make the experience dining at the Raymond everything it should be. I came to celebrate my birthday in January and had a reservation for 6:00 PM. When we arrived, we were seated promptly on the outside patio. It took about five minutes before our waitress came to greet us, and when we ordered drinks, they didn't arrive for nearly 20 minutes. I finally asked what was causing the delay, and she explained that the bar was fully booked. We ordered our food, and strangely, it came out faster than our drinks. I ordered a steak, and it was cooked far too quickly -- and unfortunately, it was overcooked. Overall, the food felt mediocre for the price. I left disappointed, especially because I've been here before and had a great experience with excellent food. The only highlight this time was our waitress, who was doing her best while handling about seven tables on the patio all by herself. I don't think I'll be returning to The Raymond. There are plenty of other great restaurants in Pasadena, and this experience just didn't live up to what I expected on my birthday. read more

Our group of six was in on a busy night to partake in dineLA week. There was some confusion with orders, missed cocktails, and food/wine pairings were not served together, or the wrong wines came out with the food. Glassware was in short supply, and generally the service was below what I was expecting for this price range. Our waiter was new, very nice, but seemed a little lost at times. The manager did come by several times to assist and try to rectify the situation. We even got a visit at the end of the meal from Jesus R., Lead Chef, which was nice. One of our friends is a regular patron at The Raymond and he stated that they're known for their bar and cocktails, which didn't disappoint. The food was good, especially the appetizers, but I wasn't wowed by any of the entrees. The dineLA deal was reasonable, and I would give that another try. The restaurant itself is cozy, with several different indoor dining areas, and outdoor patio seating in the front, rear, and on the side. There's limited on street parking near the restaurant, however they do offer valet parking for $8. read more

The inconsistency and attitude is frustrating, to say the least. The used to be a favorite spot for some creative, delicious food and craft cocktails, but they just slide into complacency both in the kitchen and with their service. After this visit, we probably won't go back. Reserved an indoor table yet were taken to an outdoor table when we arrived. My wife balked on a chilly night with no heaters near our table and asked if we could be seated indoors, as requested. The host told us to wait and disappeared inside. A few moments later, he waived to us to come in - zero professionalism but at least he moved us - and proceeded to seat us litterally in front of an open door to their back patio. I had to retrieve a jacket from the car for my wife and we were okay there, and I understand space constraints, but it's still annoying. Ordered drinks, a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned. Both were very good. Later with my entree, I got a nice glass of Pinot. For apps, we ordered a Tuna Crispy Rice and a Rainbow Crudo. Tuna was great, Crudo was fresh and the fish was good, but the presentation looked like a mess on the plate. Just a pile of fish. Whatever, not a major issue, rather just lazy and not what I'd expect from a kitchen. For entrees, I had the horseradish crusted salmon which was good, but not nearly as good as past times. My wife had the burger and requested medium rare and got a nearly well-done burger. Since our waiter had disappeared, it took a while for her to get attention. When she did, he said he'd get the manager. Over ten minutes passed before the guy shows up and he apologized, but said it looked like I was done and it was probably too late to do something else. We agreed and just asked for the check. The waiter proudly told me that he'd removed the burger, which I said was the absolute least he could do, and he graciously removed a glass of wine from the bill, too. It was super disappointing and sadly appears to be a trend here. I have mentioned the experience to a few friends who all agreed with one telling me that after a completely terrible brunch experience that her family won't be going back. We recently celebrated my mom's birthday at The Raymond. The patio was nice and toasty ~ perfect for a rainy day brunch. I ordered the most simple thing on the menu: Eggs Your Way ($18). You get 2 eggs, apple wood smoked bacon + crispy potatoes. My waiter asked if I wanted to add a side of bread, however I did a hard pass when I realized it's a cool $7 for the add-on. My entree was good, though bread would have made it better. The potatoes were potato-ing. No complaints here. Everyone else liked their entrees okay - mostly minor nuances that really altered the taste of the dish. For example, the tomatoes were mushy in the chicken ($7) Caesar salad ($19). For $26 bucks, you'd hope the quality control could have been a little better. The chipotle hollandaise on the crab cake benedict ($26) was very, very tangy and intrusive taste wise. Food aside, Saturday morning brunch service was not the biz. There was one single waiter for the entire outside patio. No fault to him of course, but it felt clearly understaffed. Can I just say Wow! We went on Easter for dinner and took our mom and was slightly apprehensive as holidays can be a hit or miss. This was a hit! Service was amazing and our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. The Easter menu was broad enough and the food was delicious. We had the pasta and braised short ribs; both were delicious. I am a picky cocktail connoisseur as I make my own and all of these were fresh and flavorful with fresh ingredients from banana to pomegranate. Dessert was delicious with a lemon semi-freddo and bread pudding that amazingly not too sweet. Oh appetizers were the burrata which was phenomenal and shrimp ceviche; we also had the tots with sauces which the hubs loved because of the crunch and I thought meh they are tots. This restaurant is a hidden gem. Cozy and warm atmosphere inside. There is also outdoor seating - make sure you dress for the weather though. Both indoor and outdoor has this romantic vibes but i especially like the outdoor patio seating with the trees and bushes. There are three outdoor seating options with one have a fireplace. We didn't order appetizers and go right into entrees. Food portion is on the small side so i would recommend doing some appetizers to share. We tried the steak frites, spaghetti pomodoro, branzino and the 12 oz ribeye. The pasta here are fresh and handmade. So delicious! A delightful surprise. Other entrees are tasty too! Dessert choices are alright. Parking can be tricky cause this restaurant is somewhat tucked in. I usually just opt for valet ($8) for convenience sake. Or find parking along the narrow winding road. This review is long overdue, but I still remember our Valentine's breakfast at The Raymond 1886 so vividly that it absolutely deserves a mention. We ordered the Crab Cake Benedict, Chilaquiles with braised short rib, and the Blueberry Pistachio Waffle, and each dish had something special about it. The Chilaquiles were rich and satisfying with braised short rib, a fried egg, salsa verde, fried tortillas, avocado, and sour cream -- a wonderful balance of flavors and textures. The Blueberry Pistachio Waffle was a standout for me. I loved everything about this waffle combination. The pistachios were such a nice touch and added a delicious texture that paired beautifully with the blueberries. One of the highlights of our visit was our seating. We were placed at the end of the outdoor area, and it almost felt like our own little private paradise. Surrounded by trees and flowers, it was peaceful, charming, and perfect for a relaxed Valentine's breakfast. Service was generally pleasant, though our waiter was a little slow checking in on us, and I believe our coffee may have been forgotten. It didn't ruin the experience, but it was noticeable. Another restaurant I tried during Dine LA. It was so worth the drive from my neighborhood to Pasadena . A bit tricky entrance from the main road. However , after you take a sharp turn onto a narrow street the restaurant Valet ($8) is waiting there to help with your car. It is difficult to self park unless you park on other streets and walk up. We were so happy to get a reservation here. This restaurant has history and it actually looks like an old hotel with a variety of seating in different rooms . There are also three separate outdoor dining options as well. There are the Cactus patio, fireplace patio and a larger patio visible from the entrance of restaurant. We got seated in the bar area. It's a bit cozy ( tables a bit close). In fact, we met a nice couple while dining tonight and exchanged restaurant suggestions. My daughter and I really enjoyed everything about this restaurant. Service, food and atmosphere. We chose the Dine LA menu. We got the same appetizer (sashimi crudo) which was lemony and perfect for summertime. Daughter chose the salmon and was very happy with it. She thought the horseradish/panko topping was delicious.( I thought so too. I took a couple bites.) I got the hanger steak and Parmesan fries. It was perfectly cooked. Came here for brunch and the food and service was great as always. I love the valet. They even take venmo in case you dont have cash. The outside patio is so cute and lush. The inside is beautiful. An upscale cozy vibe. Our server was lovely. We got the apple turnover for something sweet. So good! The Chantilly cream was delightful. The crab cake Benedict was soft and good flavor. The potatoes were burnt, dry, and had no flavor so I didn't even up eating those. Next time I will get something else as a substitute. The grilled truffle cheese panini was really good. Added crispy bacon! The potatoes on this dish werent burnt but the flavor was still lacking. Seemed unseasoned. The fried calamari was really exceptional .. it wasn't anything similar to the fried calamari's that we get in other restaurants. It looked different, tasted better .. The reason for 1 star The wagyu tomahawk .. It was a chef's special dish offered for a hefty price tag of $250 .. I have had my fair share of premium cuts including wagyu so was excited.. as usual we preferred it to be cooked medium rare .. when the server brought it before slicing, I noticed and asked why it looked burned on the outside . It was getting dark and we were sitting outside so I thought it could be my eyes .. however, when I got a slice of it, I knew it doesn't look anything close to wagyu at all .. it wasn't pink .. it was well done on the outside and blue on the inside .. the meat had no marbling and was bit chewy .. it didn't taste any better than the store bought steak cooked by a non chef .. A total rip off. We were terribly disappointed and informed about it to the server .. after a while, a manager showed up and asked about our concern... They offered a dessert as consolation (which is nothing compared to the rip off) and since we were there for a celebration, and we didn't want to ruin the spirit, we didn't pursue the concern on the Wagyu any further. Update I have decide to give 1 more star to my rating since the GM of Raymond called me to ask details about my feedback. We hosted a private dinner for 40 guests with a panel presentation at The Raymond 1886's Grand Patio, and it was an absolutely flawless experience from beginning to end. Kevin was an absolute rockstar throughout the entire planning process. He handled every last-minute change with a smile, and when we needed additional audiovisual support for our panel, he made it happen without missing a beat. That level of responsiveness and care is truly hard to come by. The Grand Patio itself is stunning - lush greenery and an atmosphere that is both elegant and inviting. The food was outstanding, the service was impeccable, and the entire team made our guests feel genuinely taken care of all evening. 10 out of 10. Wanted to give the place more, but it left a lot to be desired. All the meats had an overhwleming char flavor; especially the Steak Frittes and the Chicken Ceasar. The potato/steak ratio was something; you can barely see the steak on the plate. The Pepercorn sauce has no flavor and it felt like the steak wasnt seasoned at all. We started off well with the drinks, sitting outdoors and the service but that's about it. It was fairly quiet in the restaurant, which makes sense since it's in a residential area but there were quite a few people there. We ordered the calamari and the tuna on crispy rice. The tuna wasn't flavorful and the crispy rice was pretty bland also. There was a sauce underneath but it didn't do enough for it. The calamari was pretty decent. It was breaded very lightly which I like and had a lot of flavor but not sure it meshed well with the aioli that came with it. read more
