Went for Dine LA lunch and really enjoyed the experience and getting to try all these dishes. Service was very friendly and food came out pretty fast. The restaurant has a nice, natural light filled space, and though it was busy, it wasn't too loud. It worked out well to go with two people so we could try almost all the options... - Scallop aguachile, avocado, salsa macha verde: Came with two shells, each with a little scallop, avocado, zucchini, radish, cilantro. Nice and refreshing to start. - Strawberry and vanilla French toast fingers, pistachio marzipan: A very generous portion of French toast with strawberry jam and pistachio sauce. Nice and crunchy crust. It was an interesting contrast to the aguachile first course! - Crab cake eggs benny: Two poached eggs on crab cakes. This was good, nothing unexpected, though I was getting pretty full at this point. - Summer berries, Scottish shortbread, white chocolate mousseline: This was the only dish we were disappointed by. The shortbread was pretty bland and the texture was lacking crispness. - Profiteroles, vanilla ice cream, strawberry ice cream, hot fudge sauce: Simple dessert but put together well. The decor was nice and the presentation was good as well. The food was good, not great, good. Brussels sprouts were super sweet, like would you like a dash of brussels with your caramel sauce. (Perhaps if it has to be that sweet balance it with spice) The mussels were bland, I hope they add salt and pepper next time. The fish was excellent though, perfect, no notes, we all loved that. So good. We asked to start with the oysters and focaccia, then the mussels and for our main course the fish and brussel sprouts. Mind you there are 3 other tables in the entire place at 8:30 on a Saturday.. The first thing to come out of the kitchen was the main course side, the brussel sprouts. We reminded the waiter this was for the main course. He just stood there genz staring. I asked nicely if it would be OK to keep those on the warmer until the main course is served, he silently took them away. Then not 3 minutes later all of the food was delivered except the oysters, our appetizer. It kinda ruined the experience for us forcing us to eat every at once, quickly before it was cold. Killed conversation, Killed the vibe. And if was coursed properly we probably would have ordered another bottle of wine. So it Killed the bill and the tip too. It wasn't busy at all on a Saturday night, so it's not like the kitchen was slammed and accidentally pushed everything quickly. The oysters came out last, and we never got the focaccia, nuff said. We didn't bother complaining. We didn't want to be difficult and we aren't looking for a freebee. But at that price point they should know how to course a meal. Stopped by Pez on a Friday for their last day of the dineLA series and was pleasantly surprised by the whole meal! I got the shrimp starter, fish main, and berries and shortbread dessert. I was pretty hesitant about the starter so I'm not a big fan of shrimp head but it was very very good - not at all shrimpy and perfectly balanced. For the trout, I was obsessed with the tomatoes, sauce, and the SQUASH BLOSSOM - literally dreaming of that squash blossom. Trout was great as well and the skin was indeed very crispy just as described. The only downer was the dessert and kingfish ceviche that we added on as extra. For the dessert, the shortbread was too dry and flaky and the ceviche was too fishy for my taste. Overall though, very beautiful vibes and great dinner as a whole! Went to PEZ for Dine LA and honestly, such a beautiful restaurant! The vibes and atmosphere were so nice, and the presentation of every dish was definitely a highlight. My cousin and I were having a girls night out in Pasadena because we wanted to visit Olive Young. After an intense shopping session, it was time to eat. I had sent my cousin a few restaurant options in the area that looked good, and Pez Coastal Kitchen was one that we both liked the most. Best decision ever! Pez Coastal Kitchen has a lively ambiance made for large groups with their large booths and large tables. Somehow it is lively while still being very intimate as their lush décor gives it an intimate vibe. Since we have light appetites, we decided to share the Cioppino ($49) which has shrimp, clams, mussels, chicken, fish, tomatoes, parmesan gnocchi and cheesy garlic bread. Yum!! Wow everything about this dish was magnificent. Every single ingredient was cooked perfectly. The gnocchi had the fluffiest texture. The broth was so delicious we can drink it. We asked for 2 more pieces of bread, which I was happy to pay for, but I checked the receipt and they didn't charge us for it. How nice!! And even though I can't even any more savory foods, we had room for their Panna Cotta ($15). The panna cotta was topped with crumbles of their shortbread cookie. Both the panna cotta and the short bread cookie layers were good. There was also berries with chocolate drizzles that were good. There was a layer of over gelatinous raspberry that was thick and rubbery, which I could do without, but the overall dessert was good. While we were here, we even ran into a celebrity... like a globally known celebrity that would be recognized by multiple generations. I don't want to ruin their privacy but I just want to comment on how this restaurant is so amazing, even celebrities come here. Definitely the highlight of our night! We were so happy we came here for an incredible meal, and then even a celebrity sighting. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. I know they have a fancy whole fried fish dish but we'll need more of the family with us to eat such a large item, and of course try more of chefs dishes. What I cherish most about Dine LA, is that it reveals restaurants that I have never heard of before. After researching and making the trip to Pasadena numerous times, I never discovered the Pez Coastal Kitchen. I was here for lunch and walked into a small but impressive space, elegantly decorated, with both a dining and bar area. My seating was in the latter, not on bar stools, but at a table for two, because I was dinning solo. For appetizers, I chose the scallop aguachile. There were two small portions, each in a plastic shell, sitting on a bed of ice. While I am not fond of aguachiles because of the general overdose of citrus in them, this one really surprised me. While there were only small pieces of scallop, it had an abundance of small cubed cucumber pieces that provided the nicest contrast of crunch, juice and texture. The citrus was mild and well balanced. A wonderful start. I selected the fried fish burger for my entree. The fish was mildly battered, yet lightly crisp, to highlight the big pieces of fresh, flaky and moist fish that were literally, falling off the burger. It was a good stack, with minimum lettuce, tomato and sauce, so as to not take it away from the star, the succulent, perfectly prepared, flavorful fish. The bun was also well crafted, nice and fluffy on the inside, not dry, with a buttery brown on the outside. Easily one of the best fish burgers I have had. For dessert (the third course), I had to have the profiteroles with ice cream. One was with vanilla, the other with strawberry. Both came topped with dark chocolate sauce, that had hardened by the time of eating. A superbly assembled concoction, that provided the crackle and exhilarating mouth feel. I cannot remember the last time where at a Dine LA restaurant, all three lunch courses were so well presented and satisfying. One was better than the other. They tried to fixed it, but it was stop a flop. I didn't even drink,it. It was a waste. The restaurant it's;ed is nice;y decorated. Casual but nice. Now for customer service - our server was nice. Our reservation was at 8pm on Saturday night. The restaurant kicked us out literally at 10:15. They turned off the lights at 10pm. We asked for waters and the server said - we have to give a bottled water and you need to leave because we are close. Seriously, it was at 10:15 on a Saturday night when we stepped out of the restaurant as they literally shut the doors. It's bad for business. Tonight's dining experience was, unfortunately, a disappointment. The Seared Jumbo Scallops were anything but "jumbo." They looked nothing like the photos other diners had posted on Yelp. More concerning, they didn't appear to be cooked properly, a little bit on the raw side --or perhaps they simply weren't fresh. The appearance alone was enough to make me lose my appetite. Overall, the food was overpriced for what was served, and several dishes were excessively salty. The Charred Octopus, for example, the salad on this dish was overwhelmingly salty and lacked the balance I expected. Service also seemed to suffer. It appeared the restaurant might have been understaffed, as there was only one server greeting guests, seating customers, and taking orders. While the server worked hard, the lack of staffing was noticeable and affected the overall dining experience. My friends also ordered the fish, but the skin was far from crispy, which was disappointing for a dish at this price point. To make matters worse, we were looking forward to ending the meal with dessert, but the dessert called: Tropical Fruit Panna Cotta, Tea Cookie, and Passion Fruit Sorbet was unavailable. With most entrées averaging around $50, we expected a much higher level of quality and execution. The Seabass with Sauerkraut was priced at around $50, but in my opinion, it simply didn't offer the value to justify the cost. The only thing I truly appreciated was that the restaurant offered a complimentary birthday dessert, which was a thoughtful gesture. Unfortunately, they had run out of birthday candles, so even that special touch was missing. Sadly, this meal did not meet our expectations in terms of food quality, value, or overall experience. We ordered drinks and all of them were good but our reservation was at 6pm (early) and they did run out of the star anise for one of the drinks by the time we had our second drink. A little early to be running out of stuff. They were good though. The oysters were good. The brussel sprouts were great and a huge serving! The carpaccio was decent and had good flavor. The crabcakes were yummy! A must order. The seabass itself was good but the sauerkraut in the dish was terrible and does not have a place on the dish. Tried this spot for the first time and was so impressed! I got the 3-course Dine LA dinner menu ($55), and every single dish was absolutely delicious. The standout item was definitely the crispy trout and the squash blossom--it was my first time having squash blossom served whole like that, and it was such a unique, tasty bite--and the crispy trout, which was well cooked with a super crispy skin. Stumbled upon this restaurant as a last minute dinner with some friends and was highly impressed. They were having a private party in the bar area where you can order happy hour. Since we couldn't find seating in the bar area, our server was so sweet and still allowed us to order off of the happy hour menu in the main dining area. For appetizers we had the Bub & Grandma's focaccia (freshly baked and comforting), a dozen fresh oysters (sadly not cleaned properly and had a lot of sand and shell pieces in each bite), the Black mussels (very delicious and the broth was amazing), the Pez Caesar salad (not sure if the dressing is made in house but it was delicious) and of course the Pez fries (well seasoned and crispy with their house chili/lime powder, which they sell). For our meals we ordered the Seared Jumbo Scallops, Smoked Baby Back Ribs, and the Leg of Lamb. We were all very pleased with our meals and found each of the meats cooked to perfection. I personally had the scallops and they were well prepared and not over cooked! My only critique would be that it felt misplaced to have regular charred broccoli plated with such nice jumbo scallops that sat on top of delicate truffle risotto. Such a classy meal that probably should've had a more classy vegetable paired, like asparagus spears or broccolini, but that's just my opinion. Great food, and great time with friends :) read more

I didn't enjoy my experience here at all and I was surprised since the restaurant has a very nice and fancy atmosphere. We ate here during happy hour on a Thursday night and the restaurant had maybe 3-4 other parties in the bar area at the same time. We ordered drinks and waited for a while and the waitress told us they accidentally gave our drinks to the wrong table. We put in our food order and when the server put it on the table the tostada slid right off the plate and onto the table and she used one of our forks to put it back on - which surprised me given the vibe of the place is more upscale? Then when cutting into the tostada we realized that there was a very long hair wrapped into the food and thankfully they remade it and didn't charge us for that. The tacos were $8 each and mine also had a short hair on top so I just removed it since I was excited for the meal to be over at that point. Finally got to cross this one off of my list! I've passed this location so many times and it always looked very inviting and warm from the outside looking in. I've always enjoyed the Mediterranean decor and wanted to give the food a try, especially their seafood items. Overall, the food was good but felt a bit overpriced for what it was, but again, this is the cost to eat out these days in Pasadena. Here's what my family of 3 ordered: - Focaccia bread with salted butter - nice way to get our appetite going, and good to get some carbs as we the rest of our meal was seafood. - half dozen oysters - these smaller-sized oysters were from Japan, and quite tasty! Again, nice start to get our appetite going. - jumbo shrimp - probably my favorite from the meal. You get 5 big pieces of shrimp and worth the price, I really enjoyed this. The cocktail sauce for the shrimp was quite tasty too. - daily catch branzino - this was a bit surprising and sadly our least favorite. We thought it would be served on a regular plate and filet with sides, but it actually came in a bowl filled with dashi stock and the fish was inside it like soup. The natural taste of the branzino was covered up by the broth, and it honestly could've been just any other fish. If it didn't come in a broth, it would've been a much more appealing my meal. - whole fish sea bream - this was quite the presentation! The deep fried fish came upright, and we used our utensils to cut into it on our own. It came with a garlic sauce which complimented the fish well. Definitely worth sharing! - warm chocolate peanut butter cake - I'm allergic to peanuts but my dad seemed to have enjoyed this. - pear & vanilla ice cream with hazelnut crunch - this was a nice complimenting meal. I enjoyed the bite of warm pear with ice cream, with a bit of hazelnut and pomegranate. A nice dessert to share Service was friendly but I wish she was a bit more attentive. The vibe is coastal/Mediterranean. And the culinary focus is seafood. The service was excellent! However, the food and the price points are what makes this restaurant 3 stars for me. Crab Cake: 5/10. It was so fried that I could hardly taste the crab. And it was placed on a bed of an artichoke medley that kind of gave wannabe crab vibes. It did not complement the dish, but it would've made a really good vegan crab salad. Lamb Meatballs: 10/10 tasty, lots of flavor! Delicious sauces. An excellent appetizer. Sea Bass: 5/10 Nothing special. Paired with sauerkraut.. if you're going to pair it with sauerkraut, it better be totally worth it. It was not. Lamb Entree: 8/10 If you don't specify, they automatically prepare it medium. Most high-end restaurants prepare lamb chops medium rare, which would have been much better. Lemon cake: 8/10 A very busy dish but tasty! I'm surprised the restaurant has stayed open as long as it has. I think most of the visitors are people curious like myself, and then no one ever comes back again. I'd be really surprised if they were pulling in regulars. The ambiance was nice and relaxed, and I was pleasantly surprised by how different the space looked compared to the last time I was here, back when it used to be Slater's 50/50. We tried the seabass, scallops, lamb meatballs, and blue crab cakes. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. The seabass and lamb meatballs both tasted dry, while the blue crab cakes had a fishy, off flavor. The scallops were the best dish of the night, but even then, it was only three scallops served over risotto for $50, which felt overpriced for what it was. Overall, this was an overpriced, lackluster seafood experience. Pez has a nice atmosphere, but the food did not live up to the hype for us. My favorite dishes here are - WHOLE FRIED FISH - it's so tender and not oily at all, definitely recommend CHILLED BEETS - comes with hazelnuts, burrata, red sorrel and hibiscus vinaigrette, so delicious BLACK MUSSELS A LA BOUILLABAISSE - really good, just make sure to order extra bread I also really like their caesar salad, grilled octopus, and pretty much everything else. This restaurant has been on my radar awhile. A few times their DineLA menu almost lured me in; it was their 2nd Anniversary Dinner menu that finally did it. The last time I was in this space was when it was a branch of Slater's 50/50 quite a few years ago. Pez has redone the space beautifully, with a beachy yet elegant vibe suitable for its "Coastal Cuisine", which of course is seafood-forward. There is a dining room and an equally large (and popular) bar area. They serve dinner 6 nights/week and brunch on weekends. They have a sister restaurant downtown, Pez Cantina. The Anniversary dinner menu was prix-fixe, 4 courses for $75. There was an special margarita offered as well. The savory courses were riffs off their regular menu. 1) Dry-aged Kingfish ceviche. Presented as a tostada with cucumber, tomato, avocado and lime. Very tasty and fresh, but a bit salty. 2) Seared bluefin tuna with green beans, mushrooms, avocado labneh and a truffle-lime vinaigrette. Also tasty, fresh and vibrant, but the vinaigrette was aggressively acidic to my taste. 3) Whole fried Daurade, served with garlic and poblano piccata sauce and some greens. The fish (a smaller one versus their regular menu) was beautifully fried, not at all greasy. It's a bit of a task to eat a whole fish. You must behead it, remove the tail and fins, fillet and remove the main skeleton and then the pin bones. Ultimately the fish was fab, with bits of crispy skin and a mildly sweet taste. The sauce was more piccata than poblano, with lots of capers. 4) Birthday cake. A vanilla sponge tres leches cake with butter cream cheese frosting and sprinkles, topped with berries. The cake was delish and moist, looked very much like a store-bought cake if not for the berries. It was a piece cut from a much larger cake. It's not on the regular menu. Overall a fine meal and a nice introduction to the restaurant, which I surely will visit again. read more

We had a girlfriend's birthday brunch, and it was a lovely time. I've walked past this place often, but never realized how big and beautiful it is inside. I loved the seating, lots of booths of different sizes & orientations, so it didn't feel like we were right on top of another table. Our server Kai (I think) was so friendly and helpful. The brunch menu wasn't huge but had a great assortment of items. Between the 4 of us we had the crab eggs Benedict, the endive salad, the Caesar salad, the kingfish ceviche and the nook & cranny potatoes. Everything was excellent! First off, pay attention to the parking garage address if you're having an early dinner so you can save some cash on parking. This garage is central to many good eateries close to this establishment. Moving on to the food...if you're looking for seafood, I'd definitely say to check this place out. Is it worthy of a second visit? Eh, not to me. The food wasn't horrible, but it wasn't memorable either. I started off with some oysters. These definitely fall on the end of scale in comparison to other oysters. If you're an oyster person, you know how some just pop with flavor. These were not fishy or lacking in freshness, they just lacked flavor. Next up was my entree, which was the daily catch. I don't recall what type of fish I picked but that's irrelevant for purposes of this review as the available fish rotates. I had never had Provençal‌ sauce and it did not disappoint. I can best describe it as a "green salsa". I made sure to scoop up every drop I could with the fish and veggies. The entire dish paired very well with this sauce. Please note that someone else in my party had the same dish but picked the other option for fish and she felt it was overcooked. For me, everything was cooked perfectly in my entree. If it's your birthday you get a free dessert. As you can see, I got two desserts because I'm not passing up a free dessert but I also wanted the other chocolate option on the menu because it sounded better. Both desserts were just ok, nothing to rave over. This restaurant has a cute aesthetic to it and provides many seafood options. It's a you have to try restaurant if you're from the Pasadena area but in my opinion, not one that will leave you craving a future visit. We came here on a Friday night for a date night with my boyfriend and two friends. Parking options included nearby street parking or a parking structure, which was convenient. Making a reservation was simple--I booked easily through OpenTable. Upon arrival, the restaurant vibes were giving coastal Mexico/Tulum vibes. So beautiful & esthetically pleasing. We chose the DineLA special, which featured a three-course prix fixe menu: appetizer, entrée, and dessert. While I appreciated the variety offered, I was a bit underwhelmed by the portion sizes, which felt more like tapas than full courses. Given the price point, I expected more substantial servings, so I didn't feel the prix fixe menu offered the best value. Will probably come here again for their regular dinner menu. read more

I think this is my second review for this place. Came on a Saturday night and the restaurant wasn't too packed. Sat at the bar and ordered two drinks, we were so excited to see our go to mezcal negroni on the menu! Made reservations via the website and were able to be seated right on time. Everything here is pretty good. I ordered the market fish which came with pinto beans which I loved. Only negative was that the menu we had was completely different than what's online. My husband ordered the lamb shank, but ended up getting lamb rack since they gave us an old menu and ended up having way too much fat to finish. I love the vibes here and that it's not so loud you can have a conversation. Would definitely come back! read more
