My cousin and I were having a girls night out in Pasadena because we wanted to visit Olive Young. After an intense shopping session, it was time to eat. I had sent my cousin a few restaurant options in the area that looked good, and Pez Coastal Kitchen was one that we both liked the most. Best decision ever! Pez Coastal Kitchen has a lively ambiance made for large groups with their large booths and large tables. Somehow it is lively while still being very intimate as their lush décor gives it an intimate vibe. Since we have light appetites, we decided to share the Cioppino ($49) which has shrimp, clams, mussels, chicken, fish, tomatoes, parmesan gnocchi and cheesy garlic bread. Yum!! Wow everything about this dish was magnificent. Every single ingredient was cooked perfectly. The gnocchi had the fluffiest texture. The broth was so delicious we can drink it. We asked for 2 more pieces of bread, which I was happy to pay for, but I checked the receipt and they didn't charge us for it. How nice!! And even though I can't even any more savory foods, we had room for their Panna Cotta ($15). The panna cotta was topped with crumbles of their shortbread cookie. Both the panna cotta and the short bread cookie layers were good. There was also berries with chocolate drizzles that were good. There was a layer of over gelatinous raspberry that was thick and rubbery, which I could do without, but the overall dessert was good. While we were here, we even ran into a celebrity... like a globally known celebrity that would be recognized by multiple generations. I don't want to ruin their privacy but I just want to comment on how this restaurant is so amazing, even celebrities come here. Definitely the highlight of our night! We were so happy we came here for an incredible meal, and then even a celebrity sighting. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. I know they have a fancy whole fried fish dish but we'll need more of the family with us to eat such a large item, and of course try more of chefs dishes. I hear the menu here is seasonal for the freshest ingredients so you can expect to see different dishes when you visit.

Tonight's dining experience was, unfortunately, a disappointment. The Seared Jumbo Scallops were anything but "jumbo." They looked nothing like the photos other diners had posted on Yelp. More concerning, they didn't appear to be cooked properly, a little bit on the raw side --or perhaps they simply weren't fresh. The appearance alone was enough to make me lose my appetite. Overall, the food was overpriced for what was served, and several dishes were excessively salty. The Charred Octopus, for example, the salad on this dish was overwhelmingly salty and lacked the balance I expected. Service also seemed to suffer. It appeared the restaurant might have been understaffed, as there was only one server greeting guests, seating customers, and taking orders. While the server worked hard, the lack of staffing was noticeable and affected the overall dining experience. My friends also ordered the fish, but the skin was far from crispy, which was disappointing for a dish at this price point. To make matters worse, we were looking forward to ending the meal with dessert, but the dessert called: Tropical Fruit Panna Cotta, Tea Cookie, and Passion Fruit Sorbet was unavailable. With most entrées averaging around $50, we expected a much higher level of quality and execution. The Seabass with Sauerkraut was priced at around $50, but in my opinion, it simply didn't offer the value to justify the cost. The only thing I truly appreciated was that the restaurant offered a complimentary birthday dessert, which was a thoughtful gesture. Unfortunately, they had run out of birthday candles, so even that special touch was missing. Sadly, this meal did not meet our expectations in terms of food quality, value, or overall experience. Based on this visit, I would not recommend this restaurant to my friends. Perhaps this was just an off night, but we left disappointed and have no plans to return.

Came here for dinner. Food was delicious. Great service and ambiance. Friend and I shared some dishes including dessert. A must try!

What a gem of a place. The food is fresh and delicious, seasoned to perfection. We had the lobster Mac n cheese, poke chips, scallop ceviche, and fried calamari. Every dish slapped you in the taste buds. Everything was house made and nothing disappointed. The cocktails were also a hit. In the words of the Terminator: I'll be back!

Ok so the inside is beautiful and service was really good. We ordered drinks and all of them were good but our reservation was at 6pm (early) and they did run out of the star anise for one of the drinks by the time we had our second drink. A little early to be running out of stuff. They were good though. The oysters were good. The brussel sprouts were great and a huge serving! The carpaccio was decent and had good flavor. The crabcakes were yummy! A must order. The seabass itself was good but the sauerkraut in the dish was terrible and does not have a place on the dish. Kind of ruined that fish for us which was a bummer. We did tell our server that and they did bring us a free dessert which was pretty good. Overall I would have rated it a 3 but since the customer service was so good when we spoke up about the fish dish I am giving it a 4.

Had such a great experience at Pez Coastal Kirchen! We ordered the oysters, ceviche, scallops, sea bass and ribs, and every dish was absolutely fresh, the flavors were balanced, and everything was beautifully presented. The sea bass was definitely the highlight of the meal. The service was warm and attenti, and the atmosphere was stylish yet relaxed. We will be back. Highly recommended.

Lovely location, great menu selection, and friendly service! This place is a must when around Pasadena. Everything was so enjoyable, especially the beet salad. It was so delicious! You'll love this place, too! Breakfast options and others are so fun to try!

Our first time here was for an intimate birthday dinner. The food was delicious, fresh, and we loved the variety in the menu. We also loved that they featured other local business like Jones coffee and Bub & Grandma's (the focaccia bread is to die for). Our server Grace was helpful and very pleasant and attentive. We will definitely be returning!

Stumbled upon this restaurant as a last minute dinner with some friends and was highly impressed. They were having a private party in the bar area where you can order happy hour. Since we couldn't find seating in the bar area, our server was so sweet and still allowed us to order off of the happy hour menu in the main dining area. For appetizers we had the Bub & Grandma's focaccia (freshly baked and comforting), a dozen fresh oysters (sadly not cleaned properly and had a lot of sand and shell pieces in each bite), the Black mussels (very delicious and the broth was amazing), the Pez Caesar salad (not sure if the dressing is made in house but it was delicious) and of course the Pez fries (well seasoned and crispy with their house chili/lime powder, which they sell). For our meals we ordered the Seared Jumbo Scallops, Smoked Baby Back Ribs, and the Leg of Lamb. We were all very pleased with our meals and found each of the meats cooked to perfection. I personally had the scallops and they were well prepared and not over cooked! My only critique would be that it felt misplaced to have regular charred broccoli plated with such nice jumbo scallops that sat on top of delicate truffle risotto. Such a classy meal that probably should've had a more classy vegetable paired, like asparagus spears or broccolini, but that's just my opinion. Great food, and great time with friends :)

    Shrimp tostada

I didn't enjoy my experience here at all and I was surprised since the restaurant has a very nice and fancy atmosphere. We ate here during happy hour on a Thursday night and the restaurant had maybe 3-4 other parties in the bar area at the same time. We ordered drinks and waited for a while and the waitress told us they accidentally gave our drinks to the wrong table. We put in our food order and when the server put it on the table the tostada slid right off the plate and onto the table and she used one of our forks to put it back on - which surprised me given the vibe of the place is more upscale? Then when cutting into the tostada we realized that there was a very long hair wrapped into the food and thankfully they remade it and didn't charge us for that. The tacos were $8 each and mine also had a short hair on top so I just removed it since I was excited for the meal to be over at that point. Food was salty, prices were high, and my time here was very confusing. I probably wouldn't come back but drinks were good!

Sad Caesar salad with one anchovy
    Scott S.

Expensive and mediocre food. I am giving it two stars for the nice ambience and adequate service. But charging $50 for three scallops that tasted like they were cooked with a blow torch is near criminal. Our Caesar salad had one anchovy! And the muscles were in a broth that was saltier than the sea. There is no hope for this restaurant. Time to pack things up and be on your way.

    Seabass

From reading all the great reviews here, I was really excited to try Pez. The menu looked amazing and I was looking forward to trying some great seafood. The ambiance was nice and relaxed, and I was pleasantly surprised by how different the space looked compared to the last time I was here, back when it used to be Slater's 50/50. We tried the seabass, scallops, lamb meatballs, and blue crab cakes. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. The seabass and lamb meatballs both tasted dry, while the blue crab cakes had a fishy, off flavor. The scallops were the best dish of the night, but even then, it was only three scallops served over risotto for $50, which felt overpriced for what it was. Overall, this was an overpriced, lackluster seafood experience. Pez has a nice atmosphere, but the food did not live up to the hype for us. For a seafood-focused restaurant, I expected the dishes to taste much fresher and more memorable.

    Jumbo shrimp - yummy!

Finally got to cross this one off of my list! I've passed this location so many times and it always looked very inviting and warm from the outside looking in. I've always enjoyed the Mediterranean decor and wanted to give the food a try, especially their seafood items. Overall, the food was good but felt a bit overpriced for what it was, but again, this is the cost to eat out these days in Pasadena. Here's what my family of 3 ordered: - Focaccia bread with salted butter - nice way to get our appetite going, and good to get some carbs as we the rest of our meal was seafood. - half dozen oysters - these smaller-sized oysters were from Japan, and quite tasty! Again, nice start to get our appetite going. - jumbo shrimp - probably my favorite from the meal. You get 5 big pieces of shrimp and worth the price, I really enjoyed this. The cocktail sauce for the shrimp was quite tasty too. - daily catch branzino - this was a bit surprising and sadly our least favorite. We thought it would be served on a regular plate and filet with sides, but it actually came in a bowl filled with dashi stock and the fish was inside it like soup. The natural taste of the branzino was covered up by the broth, and it honestly could've been just any other fish. If it didn't come in a broth, it would've been a much more appealing my meal. - whole fish sea bream - this was quite the presentation! The deep fried fish came upright, and we used our utensils to cut into it on our own. It came with a garlic sauce which complimented the fish well. Definitely worth sharing! - warm chocolate peanut butter cake - I'm allergic to peanuts but my dad seemed to have enjoyed this. - pear & vanilla ice cream with hazelnut crunch - this was a nice complimenting meal. I enjoyed the bite of warm pear with ice cream, with a bit of hazelnut and pomegranate. A nice dessert to share Service was friendly but I wish she was a bit more attentive. We had to pour ourselves our own glasses of wine, which personally feels a bit uncomfortable. Overall we had a nice time, and I'm glad I got to share this restaurant with my family.

Coastal/Mediterranean vibes. Very friendly staff with an excellent kids menu and small coloring books w/crayons.

After giving him the password, he opened the doors and we walked in. We were surprised in several ways. The place is way bigger than I would expect for a place named "The Speakeasy". And at 6:30pm on a Sunday, we were the only guests inside. Only one other couple came in during the 30 minutes we were there. I would assume they are a lot busier on Friday and Saturday night. It is dimly lit, and very red inside. The bar is large with many bottles of liquor on display and many seats. The rest of the space is one large area that must have at least 20 tables, and the ceiling is high. It gives off more of a nightclub vibe than a speakeasy vibe. I tried the Naked & Famous cocktail which has two of my favorite spirits (Vida mezcal, aperol, yellow Chartreuse, lime, $18). It was nicely balanced with a good mix of smoke and herbal flavor. She had the Pablo's Poison (Altos reposado tequila, strawberry, lime, jalapeno, elderflower, $17). The jalapeno flavor really stood out with strawberry and elderflower in the background. The next starter was the Zucchini and Feta Fritters, which was good but not the best out of everything else we ordered. The zucchini was a bit mushy but the batter it was fried in was crispy. Another starter we shared were the Moroccan Spiced Chicken Wings. These wings are gigantic and very flavorful. They definitely pack some heat, so be careful. I don't think the A/C was NOT working to begin with, so the place was already hot. The wings made us sweat even more. For entrées, we got the burger and the pork belly. Brian said they are known for their burger and after taking the first bite, it's clear as to why. It was absolutely PERFRCTION. So delicious! The bun, the meat, the cheese, the onions, and the crispy bacon...all of it mixed together into the perfect burger. I had wanted to add some mushrooms and avocado to it, but Kiana said they were unable to do it. I also asked for lettuce and she said that would be an extra charge. What extra charge for lettuce? We still got charged for avocado when the bill came, but they took it off once we mentioned it. The pork belly was also very tender, flavorful, and crispy. It's just hard to compete with the burger! We also got an order of the Belgian Fries to share and we were both pleasantly surprised at how good they were. The fries are salty and cut pretty thick. The sauce that came on the side was so yummy. We asked for a small extra cup to-go. All in all, the food was great and we liked everything. The vibe of the restaurant wasn't really all that for me. Brian genuinely made up for anything that was lacking in the atmosphere. He is such a wonderful asset to the restaurant and their company. The restaurant itself has been here for about 15 years now and it used to be a very old house. You can tell when you look around. They did a good job with the renovations, but you can see the different areas/rooms. I think they tried to keep the casual comfort of a home, while making it a slightly elevated experience. It was very clean everywhere, especially the bathrooms. They have one gender neutral bathroom, one for men, and one for women. No private parking, so you'll have to park on the street and put money in the kiosk. They also had an outdoor seating. Pretty BIG, only took picture of one side. They also have 2 small TVs. In the bar area and inside their cute lounge. I normally like to try new places, especially when I'm in Pasadena, so I'm not sure if I'll come back here. Maybe if Brian is working, it would definitely be worth stopping by again! Thank you all..

Magnolia House was the place to go 10-12 years ago. But the last 3 times I've been here recently,…read moreit just really doesn't have the charm or class it used to have. Service is really really slow. You may see 5 or 6 waiters on staff...but they aren't stopping at tables to check up on guests. Alot of them are just hanging around the bar or front desk chitchatting with friends. The food quality dropped tremendously. It tastes like bland bar food now. $19 for 2 meatballs laying in tomato paste....and they were not even room temperature. Felt like they had these already prepared and sitting somewhere, just waiting for the next guest to order them. Got a mojito that may have been mistaken for a "virgin" drink....cause no one at our table could taste any alcohol in it. They all said it was watered down mint with ice. I wish this place would go back 10 years and make it like "the spot you want to go to"....versus the spot you now avoid.

My group arrived after the grace period, which I completely understand is our responsibility. The issue wasn't that our reservation couldn't be honored--it was how the situation was handled. We had difficulty finding parking, which caused the delay, and I tried reaching the restaurant by both phone and message to let them know. Unfortunately, I was only able to reach an AI system, so there was no way to speak with someone directly. When we arrived, I politely explained what had happened to the hostess, but instead of showing any understanding, she was dismissive and hostile. She repeatedly said she was busy and told us our only options were a high-top table or seats at the bar. One of the people in our party was pregnant, yet no effort was made to accommodate her or consider that a bar seat or high chair wasn't appropriate. Thankfully, our server was incredibly kind and immediately found my pregnant friend a more comfortable chair, which we truly appreciated. However, what made the situation even more frustrating was that an empty standard table sat directly in front of us for over an hour. It remained available the entire time, yet no one ever offered to move us or even checked whether we would like to switch. The service from our server was excellent and the food was great, but the lack of empathy and hospitality from the hostess really overshadowed what was supposed to be a special birthday celebration. I understand restaurants have policies, but kindness, communication, and basic customer service go a long way. A little compassion and willingness to accommodate would have made all the difference.

We knew we wanted to keep it local to South Pasadena, so what better place than the historic The Raymond 1886. We contacted the restaurant in hopes that we could rent out one of their spaces for our celebration. Kevin, the Special Event Manager, reached out to us and we scheduled a walkthrough of spaces. They have two spaces that can be used for bigger groups. There's the Sunroom, which holds about 15 people, and then there's the outside patio in the back which is able to accommodate 25+. Since we had a smaller guest list, 14 people, we decided to go with the Sunroom. Fun fact it was recently renovated and you can definitely tell as the space was perfect! Kevin was a great partner the entire way through and was extremely helpful at answering all of our questions. We were allowed to customize the food menu and drinks for our guests, plus someone from our group was able to get there a bit before our reservation to decorate the tables. Kevin and our server Chris made us feel like VIPs on this special day! I don't think at any point my wife and I were without a drink so cheers to that Chris! Booking the Sunroom came with a 3 course meal with multiple options, we were allowed to pick these, and we had the entire room for 3 hours (12pm-3pm). Honestly, we could not have asked for a better experience with an intimate brunch with our close loved ones. If you're looking for a space for a special celebration I highly recommend checking out The Raymond 1886. Thank you for all of your help Kevin! Looking forward to my next visit!

This bar is tucked inside Vroman's Bookstore (already one of the most charming and iconic bookstores in the area) so the entire experience feels like stepping into a warm, literary universe. You can browse for a new book, take in the bookstore's atmosphere, and then walk straight into the bar. Honestly, it's the perfect outing. What makes 1894 truly special is how intentionally it celebrates literature. Everything in the bar pays homage to the bookstore. The drink menu is full of clever, book-inspired names. You'll find cocktails like Pride and PearJudice Pride, Fifty Shades of Earl Grey, and other fun literary twists. Every drink feels like a little wink to readers, writers, and book lovers, and it adds such a unique charm to the experience. The vibe is super quaint and warm, dim lighting, and a creative atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. The wine is on the pricier side ($19-$21 per glass), but the quality delivers. Customer service was excellent. One of the bartenders spent time chatting with us. He pointed out a chalk artwork behind the bar a dramatic portrait he drew himself featuring expressive, literary-style faces, like Edgar Allan Poe, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, etc. It fits perfectly with the creative, bookish aesthetic of the bar. If you're into books, wine, and unique experiences, 1894 is a spot you absolutely can't miss. Perfect for a date, a solo unwind-with-a-book moment, or a fun night with friends who appreciate a good story and a great drink.
