Came to Pez Coastal Kitchen with my in-laws for an early dinner. We were greeted by warm smiles and genuine elation that we were there. Our server was kind and very knowledgable, sharing the specials for the day as well answering any questions we had about the menu. While waiting for drinks, we took in the ambience. The decor is modern coastal, the bar having ambient lighting and a very welcoming air. We ordered the below and everything was delicious. We were 4 people in the group, and we left with leftovers. Parking was easy to find as it's Oldtown Pasadena and there are structures everywhere. I'm very excited to go back and try more fish dishes and maybe sit at the bar. Bread and Butter Service - delicious Charred Octopus - if you like Thai papaya salads, this is up your alley - sweet, sour and peanutty Oysters - our server was very helpful in helping us decide on oysters. we settled for half dozen east coast oysters. 2 from the US and 1 from Canada. Bluefin Tuna Tartare - I didn't want to share this with anyone! (but I did) Smoked baby Back Ribs - soft, tender and the perfect amount of citrusy kick. Can be enjoyed alone or shared with another person. Cioppino - my order. I really enjoyed the Cioppino, one of the better ones I've had in the LA dining scene. Seared Jumbo Scallops - Scallops cooked to perfection, the truffle risotto was so delicious, I couldn't stop nibbling even after I was full. Pez has taken the old Slaters 50/50 spot and turned it into a beautiful seafood restaurant. They even dry age some of their fish and display them for you to see the freshness you are going to experience. This is easily the nicest restaurant in Old Town now. We had the fried whole fish. The presentation and quality of the fish were outstanding. Service was wonderful, not rushed making sure they went at the pace that allowed us to enjoy dinner with our previous neighbors. read more

For DineLA, some friends and I finally checked out Pez since it's been on all our lists for a while. The coastal, beachy vibes were perfect, and the $35/person DineLA deal was such a steal for how good everything was. I went with the West Coast seafood chowder to start--super comforting and full of flavor. The beer-battered fish sandwich was crispy, tender, and just hit the spot. And that chocolate crème brûlée tart? Absolute perfection. The owner even came by to check on us after our meal, which was such a nice touch. After my amazing first time here, I decided to take my cousin out for her bday at this restaurant. The restaurant is still as beautiful and the service was wonderful. Our server was amazing. The food was still good. We ordered: (1) Brussel Sprouts - the way I like it. It was roasted to the point of carmelization and crispy! (2) Scallops with Risotto - my cousin's favorite dish. The scallops were cooked perfectly and tender, while the risotto grains were barely cooked through (not overcooked and mushy) (3) Seared Ahi Tuna - This one tasted pretty average, but at least the tuna wasn't fishy. (4) Grilled Octopus - the octopus was seasoned/marinated well. It was full of flavor, had the smokiness, but wasn't bland and overcooked. The reason why I'm giving it 4 stars is the that the cocktails became more basic than my last visit. We had 2-3 rounds of drinks and the cocktails weren't bad per say, but they seemed generic. ALL of the servers were polite and attentive. Overall, I would return and maybe order just 1 round of cocktails and then head somewhere else for more after a meal here. read more

It is heart warming to see restaurant provide good quality hand soap and lotion. Service is friendly and attentive. We had a birthday celebration here. When we arrive, we were surprised to see a birthday card from the restaurant and we also get complimentary dessert with a candle. Food is Big portions and with right temperature. We have four people in our party and had different taste in food so ranging from pasta to seafood/steak. We also had both stewed and panfried seafood. They all came out right! I highly recommend the olive cake. So moist so yummy with limoncello and blackberries etc. different flavors but all go so well together. I really enjoyed this restaurant. It's beautifully designed and decorated. It's clean and relaxing. I sat at the bar and ordered one and a half dozen oysters. They were beautifully prepared - I encountered zero broken shell or dirt. The sauces for the oysters were all very tasty and made in house. I have tried the vinegars and cocktail sauces at other places and I haven't ever really liked them with my oysters. I love my oysters with ketchup and lemon and rarely stray from that combination. Here, I looked at their sauces and thought, "I probably won't like these either." I gave them a fair try and to my surprise I liked all of them. I actually had about half my oysters with the provided sauces, to my own shock. To me, ketchup and lemon is still king but I did enjoy the other variations. So, big star from me for that alone. The oysters are expensive. For the dozen and a half I paid nearly $100 (I can't believe I signed up for that but man I love oysters and I was really craving them.) I can't lie, I was so blissfully happy preparing and eating each and every one, so I'll tell myself it was worth it. I didn't try anything else because I had my intentions to taste different little plates in different restaurants in the area (so many yummy looking places!) I definitely am returning to try other dishes and probably fomo myself into getting more oysters :P read more

We wanted to try the Peruvian restaurant up the street, due to outdoor seating, we decided to explore nearby restaurants. We quickly got attracted by the nice decor of Pez coastal kitchen from the outside with nice and cozy Christmas lighting. We had no reservation but the hostess happily helped us to the high tables near the bar. We absolutely didn't mind and thought that it was a nice spot. I enjoyed the vibe, the oscillating fans above the bar area to accentuate the coastal feel. The menu has a great variety of seafood. The server was attentive and gave good recommendation of the menu. I ordered the cioppino. It was loaded with lots of seafood with a bold and rich flavor. The crispy garlic cheese toasts were perfect compliments. My partner ordered some roasted Brussels sprouts and the scallop with wild mushroom risotto. The flavor was rich and the overall taste was very harmonious. Browsing at the dessert menu, we decided to have the mint chocolate chip ice cream over the brownie. We were so satisfied with the dinner. Pez is definitely on the pricier side and ambiance was very upscale. We came for Mother's Day with family and ordered a variety of dishes to share. It took a bit of time to decide, as the menu was somewhat limited. That said, the oysters were excellent, and the dry-aged kingfish ceviche was a standout. The linguine alla vongole was also well-executed. Interestingly, we also tried the fried chicken and waffles--which felt a bit unexpected at a seafood-focused spot, but it worked surprisingly well. My wife and I have been to Pez twice now over the past few months, and have had two largely positive experiences with a few caveats. Pros: - The cocktails are delicious. Highly recommend the lady bug and Thai dye. - Scallops with the truffle and mushroom risotto is our favorite dish on the menu. Scallops are succulent and the risotto is packed with flavor. - Homemade focaccia is a perfect appetizer. - Ambiance: A fun cali-coastal vibe. Inconsistencies: - Service: Servers have always been polite, but the first time we came, our meal took two and a half hours (one app, two entrees, dessert). At one point the waitress brought by the dessert menu and went to talk with another server by the bar for 15-20 minutes before coming back to take our order. That particular night was our anniversary, and we wanted to celebrate, but were ready to just head home at that point. - The mussels appetizer, while delicious, has had two wildly different serving sizes. After living in Pasadena for about a year, my boyfriend and I have walked past Pez several times telling ourselves we'd make our way in for a date night. The ambiance of the restaurant is relaxing and romantic. Although you don't have to dress to the nines, it makes it all the more fun! We arrived a little early to our reservation for drinks and appetizers but were immediately seated at a table for 2 with cozy couches and were accommodated with a mini coat/bag rack. Our incredible server, Daniel M., provided an excellent recommendation on how to divvy up the 1/2 oysters. We opted for 3 small and 3 medium; I loved the garlic and chili oil combo. A special for the November 2024 menu is the seared ahi, which the chef brought out to us himself! He delighted us with background on the restaurant as well as their rotating menu items. The ahi itself was seasoned to perfection and the green beans coated with avocado crème complimented it wonderfully. We will definitely be back to see what else will be brought to the menu! Came here for the first time during DineLA and was really impressed with all the dishes we tried - even the bread and butter we got in the beginning was good! My favorite thing that I had was the charred octopus papaya salad. I literally think about it all the time and have recommended Pez to multiple people who have also enjoyed their experience! All of the food options were wonderfully selected although since my family and I went for Easter the menu was very limited. When we were leaving we saw the regular menu and were wishing we could have had a chance to order some items on that menu. Third time visiting Pez on a Wednesday evening, quieter than I remembered. Ended up ordering their Caesar salad (highly recommend) grilled octopus (cooked well), special pesto stuffed pasta (pass), pork chop schnitzel (a must every time), whole branzino (fantastic presentation), and their Steak (meh). Service was on point, the team was great about switching out our plates and refreshing our utensils and water. We made a minor comment about one of the dishes and their team went way above and beyond - a fine gesture that wow my parents and their friend. I must admit that I have been avoiding this restaurant because the food just looked too complicated. Every photo seems to show way too many ingredients on a plate. I finally made my way in. First off, the interior is gorgeous. I feel like I'm in the south of France. They definitely did a fabulous job of capturing a coastal vibe in this restaurant. We sat at the bar and I enjoyed a refreshing rosé paired wonderfully with their Caesar salad . We also tried their meatballs. Very well, balanced with the pickle vegetables and the side of freshly cooked bread to eat up all of the whipped feta. The one thing we didn't try, but will definitely try when we go back is the whole fried fish. We saw two of these come out and they look spectacular. The interiors of Pez brilliantly align with the restaurant's offerings. The blue and green tile on one wall reminds one of seafoam and the literal fans on the ceiling suggest a beachy, tropical vibe. The whole place looked so cool, I couldn't stop taking photos for my Insta. We practically ordered the entire happy hour menu - pork sliders, trout rillette, nori crisps with tuna (please order these - they are unforgettable bites), lamb and pistachio meatballs with pita (so so so good!), the oysters and bubbles and the perfect pair (2 huge shrimp, 2 small oysters and 2 small ceviches). For 3 people it was the perfect amount of food. And the bill was reasonable, especially given the quality of the seafood - super fresh. After every bite, we kept on oohing and ahhing and asking each other "can you believe how good that was?" The food was creative and unbelievable. As for the service during the meal, the waitstaff was efficient and friendly. No complaints there. Although I will say that due to us coming in at happy hour, we were seated in the bar section where they only have high chairs with low backs. I asked the hostess if we could have a regular table as my husband has a bad back due to having been in competitive football in his youth. Before I could even complete my question, she irritatedly said "this is the only place where we seat people for happy hour." I realized she got fatigued from probably being asked the same question over and over daily and as much as I feel bad for her, perhaps she could adjust her mindset and acknowledge that people just want to be comfortable and need to ask for chairs with better back support. I still gave 5 stars because the service, food and cleanliness (yes, the bathrooms are pristine! We checked) are unparalleled. Her obvious irritation with us was the only hiccup we experienced. Minor. All in all, Pez Coastal is wonderful and we intend to return as often as our schedule and wallets will allow. We've been there for drinks and happy hour but next time we'll try lunch and dinner. So excited that this gem of a restaurant is in Pasadena! read more

My friend and I went out for a cocktails and yap night. She lives in the area and Pez has been on her list. ITS BEAUTIFUL in here. Very trendy. We had these swivel couches as seats which were so comfy. The service here is outstanding. I wish I got our waiters name. He was truly so helpful and funny. Everything was so delicious. We went the cocktail route vs wine. I got the salt shaker and lime, I want to batch this up and bring it home to New Jersey with me. We started off with the bread service. Focaccia - pre-sliced as the woman at the table next to us so kindly pointed out - with herbed butter. Beet salad with burrata. I love burrata everything but the beers had peanuts on top which added a nice texture to the salad. We also ordered the jumbo scallops with a mushroom truffle risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly ! With a side of potato gratin I would come back solely for the potatoes. And of course every yap session needs a dessert it was this peanut butter chocolate cake with ice cream. SO GOOD. You usually need a rezzy to get in, we lucked out by snagging one day of. My husband and I came in for DineLA lunch, easy to make a reservation online through opentable. Since it's not easy to find a babysitter on a Friday night, we had a leisurely lunch in the beautiful beachy Pez Coastal Kitchen. Cannot believe this used to be Slaters 50/50! With the mention of the burger, J decided he didn't need to try the prefixe meal and got a kobe burger instead. Then he said... but we should get oysters too, it's a seafood spot! haha we started with a half dozen and tried two varieties of oysters and they were both super fresh and light. Loved the apple chive mignonette and house made cocktail sauce. I had the prefixe lunch option and I will definitely go again for the seafood chowder. Large portion, lots of fresh shrimp, clams, and mussels potato chunks, and the creamy soup was not too thick. I was glad I had the lemon from the oyster tray though, I love a bit of citrus zing. The grilled slices of garlicky bread were nice, but a bit burnt. For our mains, the beer battered fish sandwich was HUGE and it's not cod! I like that it had both light and dark meat and was tender. I kind of just wish it was a fish plate lunch haha I actually didn't even need the brioche bun. The burger also came on a brioche and was a bit of a mess with all the special sauce. Hard to eat. We liked the french fries (not included) with a chile lime seasoning. The dessert was an olive oil cake, not my favorite due to the texture. The chef owner came and chatted with us, Pasadena restaurants are having a tough time with the impacts from the fires. This place is beautiful! The service was attentive and friendly. The food was pretty great. We ordered family style and shared. We started with the house focaccia and oh my god it was delicious!!! We also ordered the ceviche and it too was delicious! The chips that accompanied the ceviche are seasoned and addicting! We ended with the scallops, which are usually my favorite, but these weren't my favorite. My husband loved them, but I wasn't as moved by this dish as I was the others. I do recommend this place! It's been quite some time since I last posted a review on Yelp, but my most recent experience at Pez has brought me out of retirement, albeit for a brief moment. We've been to this restaurant at least 4 times and they always seem to be 1+ bartenders short of what there should be to have a smooth service. Most of the times they've seemed to hobble along without severe impact, but tonight (Friday night), they appeared to be in rare form. Basically one female bartender making drinks for the entire restaurant (who didn't even look up from what she was doing or acknowledge anyone at the bar outside of the gentleman customer who called her out by name) and one male bartender, seemingly new/constantly needing to pause to do something else (trying to remember what was in a given drink, looking at the food menu to put in someone's order, talking to the other bartender). After 15 mins waiting for our drinks at the bar (where we always sit), we asked to put in an order for some food. The new (?) bartender guy came over with the handheld ordering tablet thing and we had to repeat our order at least 3 times to him... only to have him come back 5 mins later and tell us they were out of one of the items we ordered. No big, we were hungry. We ordered the Caesar salad, ceviche, meatballs, and crab cakes. Everything was just okay, except for the meatballs which were dry AF and didn't seem to fit with the "coastal kitchen" theme (but they also have baby back ribs on the menu, so hey, what the f* do I know lol). Also, the crab cakes were fried nicely but didn't come with a sauce of any sort; instead, they came with an artichoke/snap pea/crab salad type concoction that was super confusing. Portions were larger than we expected, so that was a nice surprise, but we never had a single table touch from our bartender after putting in our orders (runners brought our food out to us, brought us split plates, cleared our plates - mind you they only did this to help us make room for all the plates we ordered, but they definitely left several tables dirty/didn't clear previous guests' plates long after the guests had gone). Our meal was so large we actually wanted to order additional drinks, but were literally never given the opportunity to do so, so we ended up just asking for the check. All in all, we likely will never come back.. unless I'm feeling the itch to write another crappy review. P.S. As I was reading this review back to my husband, he informed me that he saw another couple who came to the bar after us just get upset and walk out after they sat down and no one bothered to take their drink order. This is more of a high end experience here in Old Town Pasadena. Came in on a Saturday at 11 am and it was pretty empty. The time I was here there was seats still so think walk in is fine. Some of the food was truely out of this world outstanding while some were good but nothing too special. Here are my thoughts. Coffees - I got the House Special and the coffee was delicious. They come with free refills as well (they gave me a separate container that I could refill myself). For $5 I thought this was worth especially with the refills. (5/5) Vanilla bean Madeleine - These were so good. Buttery and soft, sharable with the whole table. We had 9 people and all got one. Would recommend trying if you enjoy buttery things. (5/5) Bananas-Walnut French Toast Fingers - Another winner dish to share with the table. Flavors are on point and tasted like an elevated French toast. FIREEE (5/5) Crispy Calamari Steak Schnitzel - Personally it was good but I didn't feel this was too worth it. Its pretty much a small patty and side salad. It's not bad by any means but I think there were better items on the menu. Its a huge calamari steak so you may enjoy it if you like squid. (3.5/5) Machacca Con Huevos - I thought this dish was really good. Flavors were good and the eggs were runny. Meat was tender overall a win. (4.5/5) Pez Fries - Thin fries with their special sauce that tasted a bit sour and spicy, kind of like lemon hot Cheetos. It was good and the table enjoyed it. (4.5/5) Overall this place is a spot that I would come for occasions. The menu is a bit confusing with all the fancy words that I did not understand and overall the food is good, Pricey but... good. You can expect around $30-$50 per person depending on what you order for lunch, probably more for dinner.
