I came here with a friend before a concert at Rose Bowl. I really thought we wouldn't be able to get into any places because of the concert, but we literally just walked in and they were ready to take us. I got the fish and chips and it was very well prepared. It was also my first time getting oysters and not that it's their fault but maybe I'm not the biggest fan of oysters. Some were very good and some were not at all. I will say the back definitely could've shucked some of them better. Overall, this place is very good and a nice little spot in downtown. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and I finally got around to trying it. I liked it so much I returned the following week to try other dishes. My favorite are the Pervuian scallops. I could eat them literally all day. The are perfectly dressed and the scallops are so sweet. They also have a variety of oysters to choose from their raw bar. The specials were the miso cod and octopus. Both were delicious! On my most recent visit, I had the dungeness crab roll which I think might be my new favorite. The food was consistent and the service was great. I would definitely make a return visit. Fishwives is a solid option for seafood in the SGV. I was especially impressed with their oysters which are fresh and devoid of any fishy taste; the salsa paired very well with them. Good to know there is a safe and delicious place to get some fresh oysters around here! Otherwise, the rest of the food was okay. The clam chowder was a bit flavorless, although we liked how much vegetables and clams were in it. The fish tacos were also a bit flavorless. The ceviche was decent. The miso black cod was delicious but given that it was a special, I feel like they could have done more with it rather than only serving it with a side of bean sprouts. The french fries were good; I liked the tartar sauce. There weren't many people on a Sunday at 12 pm. Service was super nice and quick. The restaurant is clean and spacious. Came here for dinner with another fish-loving friend, and neither of us had ever been. We had an excellent meal here, and I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu... I'd been sleeping on this place! I really liked the open, airy, diner-like atmosphere here, with comfy, clean booths but still a bit of an upscale feel. We started with the House Pickles and some fresh oysters. Our server was great at recommending some oysters in different flavor profiles, since we liked the milkier, less briny-tasting varieties. His recs were spot on too, and I loved that they provided house-prepared mignontette and horseradish. Then, we shared the Maryland blue crab cake (one cake that was big enough for its own meal) and the U10 Diver Scallops that came in a sauce of cream, spinach and bacon, and a side of buttery, soft bread. I make scallops all the time at home and never would have thought of a sauce like this... it was dreamy! We used the bread to just about clean the plate (since it isn't really socially acceptable to lick a plate in a restaurant), and I'm still thinking about the scallops and that sauce today. The crab cake and pickles were excellent too. We paired everything with some crisp New Zealand sauv blanc. Hidden gem and I'm so glad I found it! The ambiance is good with nice music playing loud enough to catch a vibe and low enough to hold a conversation with your party. It's tiny and cozy inside. They have a bar seating area as well as tables. There's a tv at the bar which is viewable no matter where you sit. Everyone was very welcoming and nice. We ordered the oysters (chefs choice - a dozen), clams and grilled octopus. Everything was delicious. What a find! Really loved the food here. Has the fish and chips dish (but substituted for a delicious fresh salad), special miso cod and paired it all with a couple beers. Service was easy and relaxing. Lots of people but we were able to find a seat at the bar. One snag though. When we ordered the miso cod, we were told that it would come with green beans but the miso cod came by itself on a small dish. Now, don't get me wrong, it was absolutely the best miso cod that I've ever had but it was served more like an appetizer rather than the main entree that it was. We did address it with our server who was surprised and came by with some pickled red onions. Not the greatest side with the cod but oh well. Again, just a little snag and it would have been have been nice to have the cod better presented for $22. Maybe it was an appetizer? Not sure. My fish and salad was $32. Expensive but damn. This is some of the most memorable seafood I've had. The clam chowder, especially, blew my mind. I usually don't get clam chowder because the soup tends to be too thick for my liking or the lack of variety in the chunks makes it boring, but the one that Fishwives make is opposite of that! It's not thick at all, and there's so much variety that keeps it interesting. Everything else was amazing as well. I enjoyed the variety of fish in the ceviche, and the branzino was cooked perfectly crispy. Nothing felt under or overdone. We also got the Fat Bastard and Barachois oysters and Peruvian Scallops, and these were amazingly fresh. The sauces that came with these were also delicious. The Fat Bastard and the scallops already tasted great on their own, but the sauces were a nice way to mix up the flavors. We were in LA for our anniversary and we were craving seafood at a nicer sit down restaurant with nice lighting/modern look and Fishwives came highly recommended. So we decided to give this seafood spot a try! Menu had great choices and we ultimately ended up getting a half dozen Kumamoto oysters, a hand roll flight and some real cod fish and chips. The Kumamoto oysters were amazing. Typically on the smaller size as the oysters off the shores of Japan are much smaller compared to those in the Atlantic Ocean but what they lack in size they make up for in flavor. Amazing. Paired with the typical options for toppings such as horseradish, Tabasco, a pickled onion topping and cocktail sauce. Delish. Next was the maki hand roll flight and it was good! Rice was perfectly seasoned in the mirin and rice wine and for the price and considering we were in SoCal not bad price wise either. Lastly the fish and chips. The fish was perfect. Flakey and tasty along with some perfectly seasoned breading and nice crispy but internally soft French fries. Overall. Delicious! Our server was fantastic and was very nice when we asked to have him take our photo. My only gripe was the parking situation but that comes with the territory. My go-to spot whenever I'm craving a good lobster roll and fresh oysters! I've been here multiple times, and the quality and freshness of their oysters never fail me. The lobster roll is always delicious, and the brioche bun is perfectly browned and crisp every single time. It comes with your choice of fries or potato wedges, and they're always cooked just right. They serve it with ketchup and a delicious tartar sauce that pairs so well with everything. Their sashimi is also consistently fresh. I also love the decor -- it perfectly matches the seafood vibe. Popped in for lunch on a Saturday and was able to get a table right away. I really like the aesthetic of this place decorated with fishes, it has a mix of bar seating with a tv , booths and tables. I think there also may be some outdoor seating, saw waiters using a side door and I spotted some tables outside as well. This was my first time visiting so we wanted to try a few things. Ordered a 1/2 dozen oysters, handroll flight, ceviche, pickles for the table and a lobster roll w/ fries (forgot to take a picture). Oysters were pleasant and well shucked. It comes with a minnoette which has a nice vinegar taste and a horseradish with cocktail sauce. They also offered us Tabasco to top our oyster off. The handrolls were okay, I think with a lot of sushi spots in the area you may be better off holding on this and trying sushi elsewhere. They weren't bad but they weren't memorable either. The ceviche has a nice level of heat to it and pairs well with larger chunks to place on tortilla chips. Definitely good for sharing. If offered ask for chopsticks to easily distribute the marinated fish into your chips. It made eating it much easier. The pickles for the table come with a variety of pickles and a very generous portion. l Kirby cucumber pickles, bean sprouts, golden raisins, onions and yellow beat. If you enjoy pickles you will appreciate the variety of flavors in this dish. Honestly don't think I've had pickled raisins before and they were pleasant. Ironically my favorite dish was the lobster roll with fries. Their fries are perfectly cooked and seasoned. I was actually not in the mood for fried food hence a lot of rare options we ordered but the fries really knocked it out of the park. The lobster roll comes sauced and topped with chives and sits in a buttery sandwich toast. Definitely filling given the generous portion of lobster and not overly rich or drowning in butter. It had great broth, finely chopped veggies (loved that!) and a good amount of clams. My wife got the Lobster Roll and it was delicious.
