Gnocchi

I was so excited to try this place! The wine selection wasn't my favorite. We tried the Nebbiolo and the Carricante which tasted really sour. The tapas plate so much lacked flavor. The gnocchi was oily and sparse. The shrimp and grits had an impressive flavor profile but it was too salty so we ordered bread on the side. (There were only three pieces of shrimp by the way). Bread was soft and fresh. Overall the quality of food was inconsistent but I added a star because our server was sweet. The interior was also industrial and romantic. You can tell their was thought into the layout and atmosphere.

really wanted to like this place, but honestly, it just wasn't good. The service was slow and inattentive -- we waited way too long for everything, and our server barely checked on us. The duck taquitos were bad -- dry, flavorless, and almost cold. The steak came out lukewarm, the potato gratin was dry and tough, and the gnocchi was heavy and mushy. Everything looked fancy, but the taste just didn't match the presentation.Chesse platter was below average. The Cabernet Sauvignon was actually great -- smooth and full-bodied -- but sadly, that was the best part of the night. Beautiful patio, nice atmosphere... but with bad service and disappointing food, I just can't give more than 2 1/2 stars.

We drove around Pasadena on a Thursday night and randomly found ourselves at Bacchus. It's converted from a HIIT studio that I used to go to, high ceilings, plenty of seating, and also has an outdoor patio! The wine selection is broad and inexpensive, the pour is generous. We also learned that they have live music on Friday nights which we would love to check out one of these days.

I've been here a few times. The wine selection is small but has good options in every section. The food is delicious. The service is hit or miss, they are always friendly but don't come by often.

Bacchus Kitchen in Pasadena is a charming and inviting establishment that offers an exceptional dining experience. Upon entering, one immediately feels this restaurant's warmth and hospitality, creating an atmosphere conducive to a delightful culinary journey. The staff at Bacchus Kitchen are not only friendly but also highly professional. They are well-versed with the menu and are keen to suggest weekly specials alongside their regular offerings, demonstrating their commitment to keeping the dining experience fresh and exciting for their patrons. While Bacchus Kitchen does not serve cocktails, they do offer a nice selection of wines. The range is thoughtfully curated and reasonably priced, ensuring that there's something to complement every dish and cater to varied palate preferences. We tried the Salmon special and the Burrata cheese with rock fruit. Both dishes were impeccably prepared, with the Salmon standing out for its rich flavor and perfect texture. The Burrata cheese with rock fruit was equally impressive, offering a delightful contrast of creamy cheese and the sweet-tart flavor of the fruit. Although satisfactory, the Butter lettuce and radish salad did not quite reach the high bar set by the other dishes. The brick walls reflect an old-world charm, and the accompanying 40-50's music adds to the ambiance. Even the restroom is decorated, adding to the ambiance. A noteworthy mention must be made of Brandon, the manager. His friendliness and accommodating nature significantly enhance the dining experience. He exhibits a level of professionalism and customer service that is truly commendable. Likewise, Emerson, our waiter, was excellent. His responsiveness and attention to detail ensured that our dining experience was smooth and enjoyable. Parking is a little bit of a bear because the restaurant shares its lot with Domino's pizza. However, ample parking is directly across the street if you can't find any.

Hail Bacchus ! The god of wine did not disappoint! I recently attended a birthday dinner party on the patio of Bacchus and I must say, this appropriate named establishment lived up to the Roman deity's reputation of wine, festivities and banquets! And what a banquet that Chef Claud put together. Before I had a chance to set down my coat, a glass of wine was offered, poured and extended my way. I chose a seat in front of one of the many arrangements of fragrant peony's that adorned a table set for 34. passed hors d'oeuvres weaved through the guests while we waited for everyone to arrive and live music was played by a jazz guitarist. Two plated starters and more wine followed by main dishes , more wine, sides , more wine and pasta with ....more wine served "family style" then finished off with dessert....and more wine. such an amazing first time experience and I can't wait to return. Thank you chef Claud for such a magnificent feast and to our hosts that evening for introducing our group to your local gem of a restaurant.

Being in a party of 4 girls coming from high tea, we were dressed in elegant dresses, first comment was asking if we were coming from church, followed by eye flutters, short "okay" with an upward inflation to a joke about the day, an impatient comment about hurrying up and trying the wine while we were talking, asked for water when we were out, were left to pour the rest of our wine, didn't ask how the food was all the while was attentive to the table behind us, the cherry on top comment was when we were discussing the bill at the end, he was hovering at the table behind ours, then when we were ready, we asked to split the bill into 2, my portion on mine and the rest on another card, he then said "this isn't like a drive through, we can't do it that way" so I asked him to explain his comment, cause it was passive agressive and rude. After he wasnt able to becuase he wasnt expecting me to call out his rude comment, I had to then break it down and specify what I had ordered, he then sold "okayyyy....so how much, cause we don't itemize?" I had to again express for him to specify how they do it cause he has still yet to explain where his attitude is coming from and explain how they do their check splits, from my understanding it just felt like he wanted to play dumb and make me to the math, one I did he was like "ohh, okay" should have asked for the manager but we paid and left, I hasnt had this experience before being a returning customer, but he needs an attitude adjustment as his attitude was completely out of pocket. Do better Manuel, you alone got your place of work a 1 star. The rest of the staff was kind, facility beautiful and food and wine was good. This restaurant is not reflected in the 1 star.

This bar is tucked inside Vroman's Bookstore (already one of the most charming and iconic bookstores in the area) so the entire experience feels like stepping into a warm, literary universe. You can browse for a new book, take in the bookstore's atmosphere, and then walk straight into the bar. Honestly, it's the perfect outing. What makes 1894 truly special is how intentionally it celebrates literature. Everything in the bar pays homage to the bookstore. The drink menu is full of clever, book-inspired names. You'll find cocktails like Pride and PearJudice Pride, Fifty Shades of Earl Grey, and other fun literary twists. Every drink feels like a little wink to readers, writers, and book lovers, and it adds such a unique charm to the experience. The vibe is super quaint and warm, dim lighting, and a creative atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. The wine is on the pricier side ($19-$21 per glass), but the quality delivers. Customer service was excellent. One of the bartenders spent time chatting with us. He pointed out a chalk artwork behind the bar a dramatic portrait he drew himself featuring expressive, literary-style faces, like Edgar Allan Poe, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, etc. It fits perfectly with the creative, bookish aesthetic of the bar. If you're into books, wine, and unique experiences, 1894 is a spot you absolutely can't miss. Perfect for a date, a solo unwind-with-a-book moment, or a fun night with friends who appreciate a good story and a great drink.

I know nothing about wine, but if you're a wine snob, I'm sure you'll find great joy in choosing the right wine for you. The highlight of the experience was the staff working there. Emily and Alfredo are so very welcoming and kind. It's probably the best service I've received at a restaurant and I truly cannot overstate just how phenomenal they are. They went the extra mile to make us feel at home. On top of that, even though we've only been there a handful of times over the course of a year, they remembered us and even where we were visiting from. Thank you Emily and Alfredo!

We ended up choosing a red wine to bring to dinner and it was perfect. We would love to come back again the next time we are in Pasadena.

But this past weekend I sort of had a bit of a bummer of an experience. I ordered a small cheese platter for my wife and I to pick up for an at-home date night. I added some cheeses we loved when we were there in December - I dropped them in the notes of the order AND sent an email to confirm. When I didn't hear back I tried calling, which went straight to a recording. So, of course when I picked up the platter it wasn't what we wanted. I was told emails aren't answered on the weekend, they don't pick up the phone and they're still working out the system. Thwarted by three modes of communication. Pretty disappointing. And for the $120 price tag, I was a little underwhelmed. I probably would have been better off just buying the cheeses from them, and getting the crackers and the accoutrements somewhere else and assemble it myself at home. I'll probably still eat here because there are some solid dishes, and the back patio is a beautiful spot to bring the family (pup included), but I just won't be ordering a cheese platter again, unfortunately.
