The ambiance

Came to Shiro for my birthday celebration and was instantly reminded of what true white‑tablecloth service feels like. We were greeted by a wonderful host whose smile set the tone for the evening. Our server, Christy, was amazing, and having the owner, Cheryl, stop by our table to personally wish me a happy birthday made the night even more special.

The food was absolutely fantastic! We got the sea bass and the lamb chops. Some of the best lamb chops I think we've ever had anywhere ever. Our server Tara was very friendly and attentive. Actually all the service was outstanding from the hostess at the front door to our server to the guys bringing out dishes & refilling water to the manager coming around to say hello to every table. We ended with the chocolate souffle tart. We plan on coming back!

Met up with an old business partner for dinner at Shiro in South Pasadena. Shiro according to my partner gave me the history of Shiro how the ownership has changed. He recommended the whole fried Catfish which has been a staple of the menu. The cuisine is Fusion French Japanese. The restaurant was not busy on the Sunday night. Service was excellent. We ordered the following items Fried Catfish 4 stars large fish served whole. Yellowtail Carpaccio 5 stars Clams in sake and butter 5 stars Asparagus wrapped in salmon 4 stars Tomahawk pork chop. 4.5 stars perfectly cooked. Service was excellent. Long conversations we basically closed the restaurant. Convenient Public parking lot right next door.

My family has been coming here since the 90s and we try to come for every special occasion. It is such a great restaurant with exceptional staff and amazing food! The catfish is the best I've ever had, hands down! And the location is perfect for walking around. Shiro is the best, highly recommend!

I went to Shiro for my birthday dinner with my date and the service and ambiance was very nice! There wasn't too much people at this restaurant and nice to be able to converse! Calamari: The frying and taste was thin, crispy and light! I also really loved the tomato sauce that came with it! The taste was super fresh and fragrant! Mushroom Ravioli: The sauce was very umami and the shrimp ravioli cuts through and adds a good amount of flavor! My date and I loved the sauce and tried some with the bread! Duck with Orange Reduction: For the duck, the flavor cuts through and there's no taste of gamey flavor! The duck was tender and great to eat! The reduction adds a light clean umami taste. John Dory: In my opinion, I believe the John Dory was the highlight of the meal! The fish was light and crispy while I believe the mashed potatoes on the bottom added a well rounded touch of carbs to fully complement each other! Beets, Zucchini and Potatoes: These sides were such a nice touch to eat and a palate cleanser when the duck was a bit heavy or a need to take a break from the entrees! Apple Tart with Ice Cream: This small dessert was such a nice and light treat to eat and celebrate at Shiro! In addition, the vanilla and caramel coating was a great balance against the tart! I would love to come again at a later time to celebrate at Shiro once again! They have a cute little postcard that I've kept as a memorabilia for this great meal! Thank you Shiro staff for making my birthday special! TIP: They do have restrooms! In addition, I recommend coming at a later time so street parking is more ample and less of a hassle!

Dine LA dinner menu

My first time here and came to try the DineLA menu. A small, cozy, and intimate restaurant. It was perfect for catching up with my girlfriend. We were never rushed to leave. We ate, sat, and talked for over two hours. The food was delicious. Everything was well flavored. We really liked the grilled oysters (can't remember the exact name of the dish) Their menu is always changing, we were so glad we got to try it. It was not part of the DineLA menu. I will definitely have to come back with my husband.

Amazing food with amazing service. I took my partner here for her birthday and we both loved it. The menu is constantly changing so I'm glad I was able to try the duck. While it didn't seem too busy we got reservations just in case. Cozy and intimate, the restaurant was a the perfect place for our occasion. The Duck and Fish were delicious but the Wonton was amazing. The only downside was there wasn't enough!! Ps. Street parking only which wasn't too hard to get :)

Atmosphere is quiet and rich. Service is superb and conversational. Food is outstanding. The Filet Mignon was prepared perfectly, medium rare and the sauce was exquisite. The scalloped potatoes were cooked too perfection and seasoned very well.

Yummy chocolate soufflé tart, although it tastes more like a chocolate cake than a tart

Another hidden gem in South Pasadena. Old school intimate California fine dining service. That catfish has been the bests in LA (IMO) for decades! Duck breast was perfectly executed. Yum!

I stumbled across Shiro by sheer chance when the other restaurant we were planning to go to that evening only had outdoor seating left - and that wasn't gonna fly for this 60°-LA-Winter-Wimp. Truth is, I had never heard of Shiro and I wondered how good it could actually be considering I'm a professional eater and Shiro had never come across my radar. Well, needless to say, I went in a bit skeptical and came out very much wrong. I am SO happy to have ended up here. I must've been living under a rock as it is apparently a very well-loved, top-rated restaurant for more than 35 years now. Who knew? Anyway, I arrived dressed like a bag lady as I wasn't planning on having dinner out after my nail appointment but they still welcomed me with open arms. The place was so charming, cute and cozy - an amazing vibe that feels like an upscale meal out while also casual enough that you can show up like a bag lady. And one of the co-owners, Sheryl, came by our table and was the kindest, sweetest soul ever - so incredibly welcoming and hospitable and even sent, not one, but TWO desserts our way even though we were completely stuffed from the literal best A5 Wagyu Filet, Scottish Salmon, and Prosciutto Salad we'd had thus far. I'm sooooo excited I uncovered this spot and pretty much plan on being a regular -- and will drag all my friends to Shiro. New biggest fan. :)

This is our second time visiting this local jewel. Both of our experiences have been stellar from the service to the food. The staff is so friendly and personable that you feel so welcomed. We had the grilled octopus, cooked to perfection with a rocket salad on the side and the whole fried catfish, the house specialty. The wine list is excellently curated and the prices are amazing: most restaurants mark up their wines 3 to 4 times but I don't think Shiro marks theirs up more than 1 time. Every dish we saw come out of the kitchen looked fantastic and we can't wait to return! Please check out this wonderful restaurant! Thank you Sean, Cheryl and Irene! We will be back soon.

I had dinner here tonight. I had one guest. We both ordered the DineLA menu. Our server was Tara. She was friendly and efficiently handled multiple tables with great service. We had a nice conversation with the owner about the menu. Next visit, I will order the famous Catfish. Do get: Spanish Octopus as an appetizer, Yellow Tail Carpaccio, Lamb Chops and the Apple Tart. Rating: 5 Stars

Crispy Salmon Tartare Tacos

First time visiting, came for dineLA & we loved it! Beautiful restaurant, friendly, attentive service & fantastic food! We loved everything we ordered: The Crispy Salmon Tartare Tacos & Yellowtail Carpaccio were both delicious. My husband enjoyed the Lope de Mer (French Seabass) & I devoured my Charbroiled New Zealand Lamb Chops, it was so tender & tasty! The chocolate soufflé was good but the apple tart was superb! We were celebrating a birthday so they added a tiramisu which was huge & super delicious. It seemed like everyone was ordering the catfish, we will definitely return to try more items on their menu!

Fabulous appetizers.

I'm a second-generation Irish-American from New York, and St. Patrick's Day has always meant something in my family. Growing up it was about heritage, family, and a little joy. Now that I have two daughters of my own -- very Irish-looking girls who are proud of their roots -- I wanted them to experience some of that same Irish pub spirit. So on St. Patrick's Day 2025, I took them to Griffin's of Kinsale in South Pasadena. They were so excited to be there -- the decorations, the music, the feeling of a real Irish pub. For a moment I thought, this is going to be a great memory for them. We came early because it was a school night. The restaurant was busy -- which is understandable on St. Patrick's Day. I ordered three salmon dinners for my daughters and myself. The bill came to about $150. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. Over an hour and a half. During that entire time: * No one warned us the kitchen was backed up when we ordered. * No one checked on our table. * No updates. * No communication at all. Had someone simply said "Just so you know, food may take an hour or more tonight," I could have made a different decision -- especially with two kids who had school the next morning. Instead we sat downstairs watching the clock while the evening disappeared. By the end of the night my daughters -- who had been so excited walking in -- were tired, hungry, and miserable. When I asked to speak with a manager, no one came. No explanation. No apology. Restaurants get slammed on holidays. Kitchens fall behind. That happens. But ignoring a table for 90 minutes -- especially a family with children -- isn't a busy night. It's bad management. What should have been a fun St. Patrick's Day memory for my daughters turned into a long, uncomfortable evening where we felt completely invisible. For a place that trades so heavily on Irish identity and hospitality, this was about as far from hospitality as you can get. Save your $150 and celebrate St. Patrick's Day somewhere that actually wants you there. And if management would like to explain how a family ends up waiting 90 minutes with no communication, I'd genuinely be interested to hear it.

As a I grew up in Highland Park I took my wife to visit The Arroyo Club bar to celebrate her recent promotion after the bar was recommended to us by a close friend. We were looking forward to a fun evening and decided to participate in the trivia game being hosted that night. After receiving an answer sheet from the host, Matt, my wife and I began playing. The trivia topic was based on an older television show that we were unfamiliar with, and we initially used our phones to look up answers. A male individual approached us and informed us that using our phones was considered cheating. We accepted that explanation, stopped using our phones, and continued playing. Later in the evening, I observed bartender Justin speaking with the same individual and appearing to provide him with answers. When I questioned how that was different from what we had been told not to do, Justin stated that it was not cheating because they were part of a group. I responded that it was only a game and not a serious issue, especially considering my wife and I had only accumulated a few points. At that point, the interaction became uncomfortable. Justin informed the host that my wife and I should be disqualified for cheating, despite the fact that we had stopped using our phones when instructed. The employee who had originally confronted us also became increasingly confrontational, which my wife and I found intimidating. I later asked another bartender, Zach, what the concern was, and he explained that the winning prize was $50. While I understand the importance of maintaining fair rules, the way the situation was handled felt unnecessarily hostile and embarrassing. What made the experience even more disappointing was that we appeared to be the only minority guests present at the time, and we observed other patrons using their phones without being confronted. This left us feeling singled out and unwelcome. My wife attempted to discuss how the situation made us feel with a female bartender who had blue hair. Unfortunately, her reaction appeared dismissive, and our concerns did not seem to be taken seriously. As we prepared to leave, the employee who had initially confronted us remained nearby staring in our direction, which further contributed to our discomfort. For reference, we were seated at the right corner of the bar if you were facing the bar from the front. I am not seeking compensation. Rather, I hope management will review the events of that evening, including any available security footage and discussions with staff members present. No guest should leave feeling targeted, embarrassed, or unwelcome while simply trying to enjoy a night out celebrating a special occasion.

The restaurant itself isn't too big but it does a pack a nice punch. Cute patio out front that takes some of the sidewalks and streets. Plenty of heat lamps which helped with the chilly nights. We got seated at one of the tables on the patios which was nice. Didn't really utilize inside area except for the restroom which it's quite cute in there. The rooms were pretty well decorated and executed. Nice bar area too. Like mentioned, we got seated on the patio and the heat lamps were great. Down to the menus, it's quite limited on dishes. Seemed like there were more shared plates versus the entrees. Drinks, it was fairly decent with their cocktails and wine. Service at the beginning was great. The staff were amazing and very friendly. We didn't order right away as we were still waiting for the last one to show. But did start off with some drinks. It didn't take that long for the first round which was nice. Food wise, the shared plate was a mixture of everything. Some of the olives, which is exactly what it is. The Belgian fries, nice thick cut fries with shredded pecorino cheese and a nice aioli sauce. We ended up getting a second order of it. The albacore tuna crudo was a hit which was really tasty. Chili ginger relish, mint and shallot, can't go wrong with that. Lastly the meatballs, tasty and very great for sharing. Entrees, the pan seared sea bass which I loved. Portion is pretty tiny which also seemed like they were a shared plate. Almost tapas styled. Nice chimichurri sauce and a side salad. The chicken Milanese also with a side salad of arugula. Simple dish but quite tasty. One of the salads that was somewhat hyped up by the waitress but it was just a salad. Decent but nothing major to rave about...lol... also the confit oyster mushrooms was major hit. Something that simple but quite tasty. And lastly the pan con tomate, rustic sourdough with tomatoes and burrata. Tasty as well. Overall the meal was good. From there, the second round of drinks did take a long time to arrive and with then plates that we shared, trying to get someone to clear the plates was another thing. Took a long for someone to clear the table before more items came. Even when the entrees came, all the empty starter plates were still there. And if someone did clear the plates, some was still left on the table. Finishing off the night, we did have the dessert which we tried all three. As it was two of our girlfriends birthday, they brought out a little bubbly for us to celebrate with the dessert. That was quite sweet and nice. Honestly opinion with the dessert, they were just ok. Nothing major to rave about. We tried all three on the menu and they were just ok. Overall, the food was great. Service was nice and the staffs were all very friendly. It did take a while for plates to get cleared from the table and second round did take a while, but it was manageable. It was a sweet gesture with the bubbly with the dessert which was greatly appreciated. The place is nice and great for catching up. Menu is limited and portions are quite small. You would have to get a good amount for sharing. Entrees, depending on what you order is small as well. But we enjoyed ourself.

Another friend ordered Negroni, which is a potent cocktail with a bitter sharp, dry aftertaste. I could hardly taste any hint of sweetness in the drink. My friend thought it was too bitter, too. Honestly, for me it tastes just as bitter as a Manhattan, probably because both cocktails incorporate sweet vermouth. 3 stars for the poor customer service and wait time for standing in line to order drinks. There were 2 or 3 bartenders and they were rushing but also seemed like they weren't efficiently helping customers with drinks in a timely manner. There is a public parking structure down Meridian street, near heirloom bakery. We went on the weekend and the parking structure was free to park.
