    Ankimo sushi - so good
    Lucy Y.

We walked over from the Ice House to get a quick bite before our show started, and were SUPER impressed. Great menu, cute place, gracious service. My not so adventurous friend loved her miso soup & shrimp tempura cut roll. I LOVED: Double Hamachi roll Ankimo sushi ...so much so, I would drive from West LA just for these, and then try many more things. What a fantastic surprise! It wasn't until I came here to review our delicious dinner that I realized this secret is OUT. I will definitely be back for more super fresh sushi here!

    Albacore garlic spicy roll

Amazing. So great to have a high quality mom and pop sushi spot in walking distance. The nigiri is super fresh, generously portioned and has a light wasabi dressing on top that makes the tuna perfect. Albacore spicy crunch was so perfect. Almost too perfect. I'm usually not a fan of spice but the garlic and sesame flavors balanced out the spice perfectly. Service was amazing and ambiance was traditional Japanese and adorable, with walking travel shots of Japan on TVs in the room. Will be back for more.

Consistently the best flavor, service and value. When the need for sushi hits, we will drive from Silverlake. We almost always order the Agedashi Tofu and Chirashi. It's too much food, and we should try other menu items, but it's so good. I've developed a taste for uni now, and this restaurant is solely responsible.

    Lunch: three sushi roll combo

They have great lunch combo deals. We frequently visit for their 2-3 item bento boxes during lunch. Their hamachi collar bento is amazing. They also have a two or three sushi roll combo as well. My only complaint is that the rice for the sushi is a bit hard for my liking.

AMAZING sushi experience. Service was so attentive! The meal was amazing!! So flavorful and thick cuts of sashimi. We got the chirashi special mixed sashimi, salmon sashimi, and 3 rolls for the lunch special. Great deal for lunch pricing.

I stopped in because of just left as business down the street and the weather was so hot. Inside is very homey and traditional. The sushi chef is right there facing the customers tables. I rarely frequent Japanese restaurants because I'm not a sushi fan but I love tempura! I ordered green tea to start with a cucumber salad which was so fresh and hit the spot. My main dish was the tempura which was crispy and light and almost melted in my mouth! The service was great as all the servers checked in on me even with a full house in a Friday evening. Overall a solid 10/10 on everything that I ordered and I'll definitely be back!

Wow! What an amazing small mom and pop sushi restaurant! After a recommendation from a friend, I had to try it out! While the reviews all boast about the bento box, I wanted to try their sushi! We ordered their rising yellowtail roll, lemon salmon roll and spicy edamame! They were all so fresh and delicious! The service was excellent as well with the servers coming by frequently. Will be back again to try out more items from their menu!

What a totally underrated spot! So unassuming and away from the hub that is Old Town, Kyushu is tucked on the corner on Colorado. There's free parking in the rear, but looks like street parking isn't much of a problem. Upon walking in, it didn't seem like your average sushi bar. It really felt like an old school Japanese spot - so charming but chill. Service was fantastic! Our server (whose name escapes me) gave us his two cents and he did not steer us wrong! Got the Uni Chawanmushi, Pink Lady, the Lemon Salmon Roll and the Rising Yellow Roll. We also got a handroll each as well as an order of the red snapper sushi. Everything was phenomenal! Prices were super reasonable and I cannot wait to come back here!

I already ate the crab roll
    Rex C.

We fiinally tried Kyushu Sushi and I was honestly surprised in the best way. The portions here are BIG. Not like the usual tiny little bites some sushi places give you--this place actually fills you up. The Blue Crab hand roll was legit delicious. Fresh, creamy, and overflowing with crab, not just rice filler. The tempura was also really good--not oily, perfectly crispy, and still light enough where you don't feel weighed down after eating it. Another plus... there's actually parking on the side which is a lifesaver ..but make sure your turn left right away cause its a one way street. No circling around forever looking for street parking. Overall, Kyushu Sushi was definitely worth it. The portions were surprisingly generous, the flavors were solid, and the quality was there in every dish. On top of that, the service was on point--everyone was super friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance inside was also really nice... casual but still clean, comfortable, and welcoming. We will absolutely come back again if we are in the area.

Teriyaki Salmon tempura and sashimi bento
    Josie C.

This is the kind of place that surprises you. Expect a strip mall "Japanese" restaurant - no-frills lunch, not necessarily "authentic Japanese" -- once you level set that expectation, Kyushu Sushi absolutely delivers. I grabbed the bento lunch and was blown away. Every single compartment was packed to the brim. As if the chef kept asking, "What else can I squeeze in here?" As for the sashimi, it was thick-cut. However I will point out, the rice is not Japanese short grain and the tempura is Chinese style. I don't think it's possible one person can finish this bento. At $18.95, it's hands down the best deal in town when you're craving a Japanese fix. I can't wait to come back for their chirashi!

The pros of this place would be price, portion size and silverware. The cons however highly outweigh the cons. Food took over 40mins to arrive. My miso soup had piece of sponge or something. I didn't want to mention it, but my wife insisted. The staff gave no apology or any concern. Felt like she thought we were lying about it or something. The tempura batter was more than what I like. The teriyaki sauce was off too. Ended up full, but definitely quality is not there. I would rather head down to south pasadena and pay a little more for a bento there.

    Lunch Special - #13 Tonkatsu + Tempura + Sashimi
    Jin C.

Great little Japanese spot. Service is friendly and the quality of the food is fantastic. Came here for lunch, lunch special from 11am-3pm. Bento Box: Lunch Special #13 Tonkatsu + Tempura + Sashimi 9/10 - The tonkatsu was crunchy and tender, goes really well with the Katsu Sauce. Sashimi was fresh and melts in your mouth. Tempura was lightly battered and crunchy. Sushi: Spider Roll 10/10 - Huge fan of soft shell crab. The crab was perfectly battered, and had a nice crunch. Spicy Tuna 8/10 - The tuna was fresh. Overall, the roll was solid. Salmon Avocado 9/10 - The salmon was fresh and melts in your mouth. The avocado was creamy and really helped balance the salmon. Side note - The rice for all three rolls was perfectly cooked, soft and really kept everything together. All this great quality food (3 rolls X2 and a Bento Box) came out to $55 w/ tax. Extremely affordable lunch special. If you're in the area, check this place out!

Walking in you get to see a nice display case of various pastries and a cute space with a few tables set up. They also have seating outside on Green if you prefer al fresco dining. It seems they have more substantial food than just pastries but I was just after the pastries. Staff were all kind and friendly, helped me pack up my goodies and I basically gobbled them up as I was walking some more. I got the canele and really enjoyed it. It had a nice, crisp exterior with a very soft, custardy center. Texturally, the canele was great. The paris-brest was also pretty good (doesn't rival ones I've had in Paris but thats likely a high bar). I found the praline cream super decadent and rich with hazelnut flavor but the choux itself wasn't amazing. However, I found out afterwards that this is a fully vegan establishment and was astounded that they got such wonderful textures and flavors without butter. With that knowledge, I was amazed at the renditions of these desserts and think its an amazing option for folks with a vegan diet to have excellent French pastries. I definitely recommend it as a vegan bakery and even as a great bakery for non-vegans.

Very disappointing experience with how we were treated…read more We went here for lunch last weekend and waited about an hour and a half for a table. When the host at the front, who was managing the waitlist, told us our table was getting cleaned, she pointed to a specific table that was being cleaned by the busboys. Shortly afterward, I saw a customer approached the staff, and they seated him at the same table we had just been told was ours. I immediately asked the manager what was going on. The manager told me that the host had "said it wrong" and that the other customer had a reservation. I understand that reservations need to be honored, but then why were we told that this particular table was ours after we had already waited 90 minutes? We had given our name, followed the waitlist process, and patiently waited. If there was a reservation for that table, the staff should have known and communicated that clearly. The next available table could have been given to the reservation party. What made the experience even more uncomfortable was the manager's attitude toward us compared with his attitude toward the other party. We had done nothing wrong. We were understandably unhappy because someone else was seated at the table we had just been promised. Since the confusion was caused by the restaurant, we would have appreciated at least a meaningful "I'm sorry." Instead, the manager seemed annoyed when speaking with us (think about a cold tone voice and side eyeing). At the same time, he was smiling and friendly toward the other party. The difference in attitude was very noticeable and left us feeling like we were not being treated fairly or equally. This was especially uncomfortable with the difference in our ethnicity and the other party. I cannot say for certain that race was the reason for what happened, but the combination of being passed over for a table we were told was ours, and then seeing the manager treat the other party so differently made it very difficult not to question. I hope the restaurant reviews how its hosts and managers handle situations like this, because customers deserve to be treated consistently and respectfully.

My friend and I shared the following dishes: -Carlos Jewel Box: My favorite dish here. I just loved the variety. Sashimi and fried seafood on a bed of fluffy and seasoned rice. Also a nice umami kick from the ikura. The sashimi was tasty and standard, but I really enjoyed the fried seafood bites. The tempura batter was great and the seafood was nice and plump. -Tendon Combo with Cold Udon: Same notes for the tempura here, the batter was great and the tempura here is on another level. I also liked the half boiled egg and breaking the yolk into the rice, so delicious! The cold udon dipping noodles were also tasty and refreshing. Great for hot weather. Still very delicious though and was no wait for 6 of us for lunch on a Thursday! The cold soba was also a good compliment to the small tempura rice bowl. Overall pretty solid, though not sure if I would come here ONLY for the tempura. I heard the original location is amazing, but having this here in Pasadena and closer by is awesome too! They didn't have enough room for our party inside so we did have to sit outside which wasn't great in the warm weather. I'm glad I got to try it, as I've been waiting for months for the opportunity- as I also consider myself a lover of tempura and deep fried foods- but this didn't wow me as much as hoped a tempura place would. Maybe their batter isn't something I'm 100% into, and maybe hype played into it, but I'm not 100 % on the Carlos train yet. Maybe another visit or two will even those odds! *note: There is validated parking in the back for the first 60 minutes for Carlos Jr.

Everything, and I mean everything, was so delicious. One of the best dim sum places I've been to. The pricing of the items ranged from $8-$10 per item we ordered which is expensive but as a treat every once in a while and for the amount of time and effort that goes into making dim sum, it was worth it. I've tried making dim sum at home and it is so hard! Pricing breakdown: $8 items: - har gow (4 pcs) - siu mai (4 pcs) - black bean spare rib - pan fried turnip cake - egg custard $9 items: - chicken feet $10 items: - shrimp rice noodle roll I think they no longer have the tripe on their menu anymore bc I couldn't find it on their online ordering. Perfect family dim sum experience for us…read more We took out my parents and in-laws for dim sum: my parents' very first time ever. We did wait about an hour, but honestly I didn't mind at all because it gave us a chance to relax, talk, and catch up as a family. Once we were seated, my parents were immediately impressed with the decor: elegant and cultural without feeling overly modern or cold. And can we talk about the tea kettles? They looked like literal pieces of art being poured at the table. Ordering was super easy with the QR code system, so my husband handled the whole spread: shumai dumplings, chicken feet, sesame balls, and more. Everything came out hot, fresh, and beautifully plated. The ENTIRE table agreed on one thing: the chili oil condiment deserves to be sold in bottles to take home. It was that good. Smoky, just the right amount of spicy, and addictive. Now for the real test: my in-laws. They've been to *many* dim sum places and are not easily impressed. They declared this place to have the best chicken feet that they've ever had: meat easily sucked off the bone, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and perfectly seasoned. High praise coming from dim sum veterans. Most importantly, my parents' first dim sum experience couldn't have been better. They loved everything from the ambiance to the food to the overall experience. My husband and I want to come back to explore more of the menu because there's clearly so much more to try
