Yet their sashimi and sushi dishes truly stand out, not just from their beautiful presentation, but from their good quality fish. Their raw fish definitely stand out more than sushi rolls. My favorite was their four piece salmon sushi combo, which includes truffle salmon with actual truffle pieces on top. Their sashimi is generous in size, and so fresh so good. I enjoyed their sushi, hubbie thought it was a bit too big. Can't go wrong with big. We got our appetizer fried squid at the end, but I was sure to take a taste. It was so good! By far, the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. Their portions are generous and is reasonably priced! I had the small sashimi plate which had a wide assortment of fresh fish, including scallop topped with uni and 24 karat gold flakes. It was amazing! The pieces of sashimi are thick. What a totally underrated spot! So unassuming and away from the hub that is Old Town, Kyushu is tucked on the corner on Colorado. There's free parking in the rear, but looks like street parking isn't much of a problem. Upon walking in, it didn't seem like your average sushi bar. Fresh, creamy, and overflowing with crab, not just rice filler. The tempura was also really good--not oily, perfectly crispy, and still light enough where you don't feel weighed down after eating it. Another plus... there's actually parking on the side which is a lifesaver ..but make sure your turn left right away cause its a one way street. No circling around forever looking for street parking. The pros of this place would be price, portion size and silverware. The cons however highly outweigh the cons. Food took over 40mins to arrive. My miso soup had piece of sponge or something. I didn't want to mention it, but my wife insisted. The staff gave no apology or any concern. Felt like she thought we were lying about it or something. The tempura batter was more than what I like. Bento Box: Lunch Special #13 Tonkatsu + Tempura + Sashimi 9/10 - The tonkatsu was crunchy and tender, goes really well with the Katsu Sauce. Sashimi was fresh and melts in your mouth. Tempura was lightly battered and crunchy. Sushi: Spider Roll 10/10 - Huge fan of soft shell crab. The crab was perfectly battered, and had a nice crunch. Spicy Tuna 8/10 - The tuna was fresh. I've driven by the place many times and finally made the visit. Very small place so if you have a large party you'd want to call in. There was one other customer when I arrived. They had a yellowtail bowl and salmon bowl. Since they were the same price I asked if I can do half and half which they were nice enough to do. They do bring complimentary edamame to start. Then got miso soup and salad. The soup was not in a traditional bowl but it was pretty good as was the salad. Then my bowl arrived. As you see from my picture the fish was very fresh. This was my first experience ever at this location. I arrived around 8:00 PM do table of one. It was busy, so I expected some sort of wait for one person. There was 2 reserve signs on (2) sushi bar seats, but two other sushi bar seats were empty. I was told 10 to 15 minute wait. I waited 40 minutes finally. I waited over 30min to be presented a table for four.. I said as a table for four necessary I'd rather not take up all that space.. there was a table for two right by the window that they didn't give it to me.. instead they moved all the junk out of the way from the last sushi bar seat which was right in front of where they do all of their table service tasks.. fill pitchers, exchange food, silverware, napkins, payments, etc. It was very annoying and not where you want to sit when you're spending good money. Wanted to try out this new addition to the Pasadena scene so my friend and I stopped by during the lunch hour. It was somewhat busy but thankfully there was an empty table, and we were seated right away. Edamame was complementary during our visit, which was appreciated since it is $4.95 on the regular menu. We ordered the Chicken Katsu + Tempura + California Roll bento box (lunch special, $17.50), a Tonkatsu + Tempura + Sashimi bento box (lunch special, $18.50), with and an Uni chawanmushi. The chawanmushi was simply delightful, silky, soft with just enough firmness, and the uni on top was perfect to add the extra texture and flavor. The bento boxes were sizable, with each including a salad, fruit, rice and depending on which bento, the tempura, protein and sushi/sashimi. The tempura included two shrimps and various vegetables. This can satisfy your hunger with the amount of food you get. The chicken katsu and tonkatsu had the perfect crispiness while making sure that the protein wasn't dry. The interior was a bit classy, with table clothes and elegant settings. Service was on point and attentive.
