I've been coming to this place for a few years now and to be honest, I was in Sacramento when he opened his first location in Oak Park. First I'd like to acknowledge how he helped to clean Oak Park up I believe he really did try to give us the Black Wall Street feel. Back to the food. I've been getting that smothered chicken meal since forever. It's literally my favorite. I have a gumbo. My grandmother was from Louisiana and I ain't had none like hers since she died. So maybe my review on the gumbo isn't as fair but i don't like it. I didn't say it wasn't good. I just don't like it. The oxtails are okay. The shrimp and grits are good. I have been a patron of Fixins Los Angeles since it opened. The servers are incredible, and I love the atmosphere and energy. The restaurant is usually extremely busy, and getting seated can sometimes feel overwhelming, but I have continued to enjoy coming here. Today's experience, however, was disappointing. I usually dine in, but today I ordered online for pickup. After collecting my food and walking a mile and a half home, I opened the container and discovered my order was incorrect. Frustrated, I got dressed again and walked back to the restaurant. Upon returning, I asked the hostess to speak with a manager. She asked me to sit down, and I waited approximately 15 minutes before he arrived. After I explained what happened, he asked questions and requested proof that the order was wrong. I showed him my detailed receipt, and he said he would have it corrected. I appreciate his agreement to correct the order, but the way the situation was handled fell short. He did not introduce himself by name or position, and I received no apology for the mistake or the inconvenience of making another trip. The way he requested proof also left me feeling as though my honesty was being questioned. Verifying an order is understandable. Making a customer feel heard, respected, and valued should be just as important. A professional introduction, a sincere apology, and a courteous explanation would have made a significant difference. I will continue to patronize Fixins because I enjoy the restaurant and its servers. However, management needs to demonstrate the same hospitality I have come to appreciate from the staff. Correcting an order matters. How you treat the customer matters just as much. read more

We ordered a family meal to share between a group of 4. The family meal was filling with two large sides. Multiple options from candied yams to cheese and grits. The fried chicken was very flavorful and crispy, loved it with the hot sauce. Catfish bites and fried green tomato were also additional appetizers we ordered, definitely recommend if you are curious to try some other soul food options at fixins soul kitchen. Corn bread was more bread than corn, not the best in my opinion, was on the dryer side, maybe it was an off day. The butter that goes with it had a spicy kick to it. On Friday evening, October 9th, after work, I went to Fixin Soul Kitchen with my Mom for dinner. LA LIVE in Downtown LA is very close to the condo where I live, within walking distance, so I decided to explore some restaurants in the area that I hadn't tried before. As I was looking at the menus posted outside the restaurant, I spotted Shrimp and Grits and immediately thought, "This is it!" I decided to give this place a try. I used to live in South Carolina a very, very long time ago, and I absolutely love Shrimp and Grits. It's a nostalgic comfort food for me, almost like a soul food that brings back memories. (One of my aunts still lives in South Carolina. I remember visiting her there a few years ago, and she has been living there for more than 60 years.) When we went inside, the hostess seated us at a small table for two. However, my Mom thought the table was too small and asked me to see if we could move somewhere else. I went back to the hostess and asked if we could move to one of the tables I could see nearby, but she told me that it was reserved. So I asked if we could sit at the table right next to it instead, and she said that would be fine. We were then moved to a slightly more spacious table for four. At the original two-person table, my Mom and I were sitting across from each other, but at the new four-person table, we were able to sit side by side, which I liked much better. There were also two people sitting at the four-person table right next to us. We ordered Shrimp and Grits and a three-piece Fried Chicken meal. Since the fried chicken came with a choice of two sides, we ordered coleslaw and French fries. The food came out pretty quickly, and the Shrimp and Grits were really delicious, although it was a little spicy. I don't handle spicy food very well, so I was hoping for a milder version, but it turned out to have a bit of a kick. The fried chicken was crispy and very tasty, too. The portions were quite generous, and the three pieces of chicken were so big that we couldn't finish everything, so we had to get the leftovers packed up to take home. Both the fried chicken and the Shrimp and Grits were delicious, but the coleslaw was really bad. On the other hand, the French fries were nice and crispy, and I really enjoyed them. Oh, my Mom loved the bread and butter. Their butter was really good! The server was also very friendly. When I asked, "Can I have some more water?" She came over and refilled our glasses. When we asked for two extra plates, she brought them to us right away. However, there was one major downside to this restaurant: it was incredibly, unbelievably loud inside. The music was so loud that I thought my eardrums were going to burst! (I am particularly sensitive to sound and noise.) It was so noisy that it was almost impossible to have a conversation with my Mom, even though she was sitting right next to me. The female staff member who took our order also seemed to have trouble understanding what I was saying, so she leaned in very close to my face to hear my order. I had to speak almost as if I were shouting just to make myself heard. This was extremely uncomfortable and made the dining experience much less enjoyable. So, if I ever crave the food here again, I will probably order takeout rather than dine in. read more

Found this place while looking for a waffle place. Parking was tough. Luckily, we found a spot that was 6 minutes away (walking). It was Sunday so meter parking was free. The line was pretty long. We opted to sit at the bar. For the bar, it was whatever open seats available. Once sat, the bartender came to assist. We got the 3 pieces dark chicken with 2 waffles. We also got the fried fish with corn bread and 2 fixins (fried collard greens & candied yams). The chickens were alright. Juicy! Absolutely some of the BEST soul food I've ever had! Now listen... my grandma made some AMAZING greens, so my standards are HIGH and Fixins' greens are damn near the same! That says A LOT! The experience we had at this southern based place was amazing! From the atmosphere to the music to of course, the food it was very satisfying. I ordered their chicken and waffles with a side of collard greens. We also have a side of their deviled eggs. They were a bit pricey (you only get 4 for $14 bucks). Black owned soul food restaurants are the best. Makes me feel at home. I've come here several times and every single time I come it is packed! They have seating inside and outside. This time I came on a Sunday afternoon (right when church lets out) so the line was out the door. Also they had the World Cup finals game on so all of the tvs were on and it was loud and festive. This place was delicious! We tried literally a little bit of everything, it was all delicious. My favorite were the bourbon wings, the fish nuggets, the coleslaw (which was vinaigrette based and not mayo based), and the oxtail. The fried deviled eggs and the fried green tomatoes were also surprisingly good since I've never had either before. The portion size for everything was just right. They do have several gourmet cocktails and I tried the PYT with a butterfly blue and butterfly peas - it was really the color changing effect I was after. It was great, not too terribly sweet and just the right strength. They also have a full wine list from Black wineries - so I'm a huge fan of that. Our server was fantastic and everyone that helped us was also incredibly kind. We went on a Friday early evening and it was relatively busy, but it wasn't insanely loud.
