Great ambiance (love the music)/wait wasn't too long. Food was delicious - fried chicken, collard greens and biscuit. The mac n cheese was okay. But, please find a new recipe for the peach cobbler. It is greasy, watery, and just yucky. I was so disappointed. There's a lot of recipes out there to elevate your peach cobbler. This place was delicious! We tried literally a little bit of everything, it was all delicious. My favorite were the bourbon wings, the fish nuggets, the coleslaw (which was vinaigrette based and not mayo based), and the oxtail. The fried deviled eggs and the fried green tomatoes were also surprisingly good since I've never had either before. The portion size for everything was just right. They do have several gourmet cocktails and I tried the PYT with a butterfly blue and butterfly peas - it was really the color changing effect I was after. It was great, not too terribly sweet and just the right strength. They also have a full wine list from Black wineries - so I'm a huge fan of that. Our server was fantastic and everyone that helped us was also incredibly kind. We went on a Friday early evening and it was relatively busy, but it wasn't insanely loud. The ambiance was perfect for us. It was my mom's birthday and she had a great time. The wall decor was hilarious and fit the restaurant perfect. We love that it's Black owned. I'd been hearing great things about Fixins Soul Kitchen for years so I finally went. The atmosphere was really good, lively and bustling in the way a soul food spot should be. The food though was a whole different story. Got the fried catfish with black eyed peas and mac and cheese. It came out really fast, which I appreciated, until I realized it was cold. Our server was amazing and nothing in this review should reflect back on them. This was our second time returning. It was packed due to a game ending nearby, which was reflected in the service and food quality. We ordered oxtails that had a noticeable size difference from the last time we had ordered. A side of okra came raw which we alerted a staff member and requested that it be remade. A different staff member returned twice to affirm that the okra was not raw and that we should request our okra "well done". The okra was not even tender enough to bite through and the insistence that it was done properly was very odd and didn't help our situation when we simply asked for it to be done - not well done. When the okra was returned, it was black and over salted, which I'm not sure if that was out of spite or general carelessness. A fried chicken piece was delivered with its skin soft. The kitchen staff need to start turning people away if the food quality cannot keep up with demand. Extremely disappointed. The cocktail I ordered was strong, however! Please train staff to not insist that clearly underdone or raw food is edible. I have seen other low star reviews for this restaurant that shows this pattern. The service was excellent. We were seated quickly, and everything felt smooth from the start. Our server was amazing she took our drink orders right away, and the drinks came out fast. The frosty glass jugs made them look extra cold and refreshing. When it was time to order, our food came out hot and ready. The greens had a nice kick, just how I like them. The mac and cheese was well-seasoned and cheesy, the yams were sweet and buttery, and the chicken was hot, juicy, and seasoned perfectly. The presentation of the plates was very well done everything looked just as good as it tasted. And their hot sauce? So good! We took some food to go, and it was packaged nicely. We also ordered red velvet cake to-go, and even after a 3-hour trip home, it was still amazing. He wanted to come here and I'm a fan of soul food so we headed over. Sat on the patio to enjoy some sights as well. We both selected the fried fish which is a catfish and came with corn fritters and two Fixins (sides). I chose the charred okra with bacon and the black eyed peas. The server asked if the corn fritters were ok and we were fine with having them. They were like hush puppies with corn in them. The fried fish was delicious, lightly breaded and not salty. I stopped by Fixins before heading to LAX as I had a bit of time to kill and had a hankering for some soul food. I wasn't sure what to expect since this is a celebrity restaurant, but I'm glad I stopped by! I ordered the two-piece fried chicken plate with two sides--I chose okra and collard greens. It comes with complimentary cornbread and what I believe is a blueberry butter. I also ordered a Diet Coke. The chicken was really good. Crispy on the outside without too heavy of a batter, and super juicy on the inside. They also noticeably season the batter, and with the Fixins in-house hot sauce on it the chicken really smacked! The okra and collard greens were both pretty good, too. Not the best of either dish that I've ever had in my life, but definitely above average in terms of flavor, texture, and overall cook. The cornbread and blueberry butter were also pretty solid. The interior and atmosphere kind of reminds me of a Chili's type setup, or a BJ's, but the vibes inside from the staff and patrons are good. I finally made it to Fixins Soul Kitchen, and as someone who takes her soul food seriously, I went in hoping it would hit in the seasoning department -- and I'm happy to say it definitely had flavor. Food I ordered the 3-piece fried chicken with collard greens and mac & cheese. First things first -- everything was seasoned, which was my biggest concern. The fried chicken had great flavor, the collard greens were solid, and the cornbread muffin with brown butter? Absolutely enjoyed that part of the meal. Now, let's talk mac & cheese. It was creamy, cheesy, and well-seasoned -- but I could taste the roux (the flour base). In a perfect execution, you shouldn't detect the flour at all. It felt like it either needed to cook a bit longer or be more thoroughly incorporated into the cheese sauce. The flavor was there, but the texture and finish just weren't fully developed. One downside: my meal came out lukewarm, which was disappointing because temperature matters with comfort food. Soul food should come out hot and hugging you back. We also ordered the shrimp and grits, and that dish was creamy, seasoned, and delicious. Definitely a standout. ‍ Service This place is popular -- reservations are pretty much a must. They host a lot of events and draw people from all over, so it stays busy. Despite that, the staff was exceptional and very attentive to my guest and me. No complaints there. Ambience I sat outside on the patio under the overhead heat lamps. They definitely work -- almost too well because I got a little hot. The only drawback outside is that the tables are pretty close together. I could hear a full first-date conversation next to us (including the awkward moment when the woman ended up paying ). It made things feel a little cramped and less intimate. Inside, there are larger tables for bigger groups and a bar where you can order as well. The lighting is low but still bright enough to see your food -- not romantic, but more of a relaxed dinner vibe. Overall: The flavors are there, and the service is strong. However, the temperature of the food and some execution details held it back for me. I'd come back and give it another try -- especially for the shrimp and grits -- but for now, it's a solid 4/5. Seems like the menu shrunk, but it could just be me. I haven't been back here for almost 3 years after we heard about the violence that happened. But it still gets extremely busy so definitely recommend a reservation. The food is really, really good if you like soul food and you're OK with over sweet and over salty but ultimately you get extremely good. Time to put all the health checks out the door! The portion size is pretty well balanced for the cost. I tried the black and tofu this time and it's actually spicy if you like spice because it is seasoned the southern way for the tofu... almost like sprinkles of red pepper and blackened. very good with the rice pilaf. The service was impeccable and attentive, even though they were so busy. I have a hunch they're used to this type of crowd. I found this place on accident. We were on our way to the Laker game but wanted to grab a bite to eat before entering the Crypto arena. We were in the LA Live business district restaurant area but noticed there were long wait times at the surrounding restaurants. We happen to see this restaurant through the glass windows. She asked us if we wouldn't mind sitting at the outside patio, since there is no wait time to get seated. We took advantage of the situation. Once seated, ordered from the happy hour menu. Happy hour is from 3pm to 6pm. Prices were excellent. Order some wine, cocktails and main entrees. We ordered all at once since we were on a time schedule. Ordered Smothering Fried chicken with Greens, regular fried chicken with Okras and Grits. We selected dark meat for both of the fried chicken entrees. We received everything within a 15 to 20 minute time frame. Took a bite of the fried chicken as well of the sides that we chose. OMG! I walked past this place on my way to a conference being held at the Marriott and boy did it smell good! Fast forward a couple of hours later and I was invited to lunch here. Definitely not a place you're going to leave not feeling full - maybe even too full! They also play gospel music and have a DJ during the early afternoon. The food was pretty good and price point is definitely consistent with the area it's in! Definitely recommend if you're in the area and craving some soul food. Food/drink review: I forgot the names of the cocktails we got, but all delicious!! They didn't miss with the dranks! Fried deviled eggs: (2/5) These were not what I expected. They had good texture but no flavor. Wouldn't order again. Catfish nuggets: (5/5) These were my favorite! While Fixin's location is great, everything else was underwhelming, especially the food. The cornmeal batter used on the fried green tomatoes and the fish was too spicy even for someone who can handle some heat, the chicken tenders were dry (so much for brining for 24 hours), and the corn fritters (aka hush puppies) were equally dry and hard. The highlight of the meal was the tartar sauce, which required a separate request and is not normally included with the fish plate. The two sides we got -- collards and black eye peas -- were just fine and unremarkable. The convenience of the location seems to give some restaurants license to serve mid food and Fixins definitely uses that license. read more

Started out with a local draft and a kool-aid, and ordered the pimento cheese dip. It was served hot, which was not expected, and with tortilla chips. Good, but not traditional. For my entree I opted for the 2 piece and a waffle... perfectly crunchy (thighs) sitting on a thin waffle. The chicken deflated the waffle which sopped up the juices. Served with syrup and a nice scoop of butter. Ambiance is rustic country, service was prompt and friendly, and prices are in line with the touristy area... I enjoyed my meal so much that I ordered a second meal to take home to my son; the catfish filet with hush puppies, yams and mac and cheese. I also took the left over okra for him to try. Fixins had been on my list of places to try for a long time and I was happy that the food was good... until later that night. I woke up around 2am with chills, a horrible headache and a queasy stomach. It didn't immediately hit me that I had food poisoning until around 8am that morning. I ended up taking some activated charcoal to get the offending food out. After throwing up I felt somewhat better, but the horrible headache persisted until Tuesday. I don't know if it was the potato salad (no one else had the potato salad), or if I had a bad piece of fish, or there was some e. Coli contamination on my food, but I was the only one that got sick and it was one of the worst cases of food poisoning that I've had. It was the only food I ate that day. My husband and I have been craving soul food while in Los Angeles, so we decided to try Fixins and it did not disappoint. We made reservations easily through OpenTable for us and some family members. The restaurant is located inside LA Live, which has plenty of underground paid parking, so getting there was super convenient. We were seated outside, which ended up being perfect. They have heated seating and a big screen TV, so we were able to enjoy the football game while we ate. Our server was great...attentive, friendly, and walked us through some of the favorite menu options. For appetizers, we ordered the deviled eggs and fish nuggets. Both were delicious and a great start to the meal. For entrées, we tried a little bit of everything. I had the chicken and waffles, with two chicken breasts and sides--cornbread, greens, candied yams, and mac and cheese. Everything was flavorful!. My husband had the fried fish, another solid choice. Other family members ordered the oxtails, gumbo, and grits, and once again, no bad options at the table. The only downside was the ladies' bathroom. My mother visited a few months ago and mentioned it was filthy, and unfortunately, it was still in the same condition..no toilet paper and trash everywhere. We let the staff know right away. Overall, Fixins is a fantastic spot for soul food in LA. Great food, great service, and a fun atmosphere. We'll definitely be back soon! read more

We just love Fixins' Soul Kitchen. This one is at LA Live in Downtown LA and it can get crowded so I suggest going during off hours. Parking is for a fee in a lot behind LA Live and it is a little bit of a walk to get there. But you will see the line. The service there is so very nice and they are fast. You get your order right the first time and you are just very comfortable there. The seating is nice and the place is cute and it has great decor on the walls. You will love it. All of their food is good and we have pretty much gone though the menu. They have great greens, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and their fried chicken is amazing. They also have great waffles and they even have super salads. They have wonderful ice tea. Everything is good. The prices are fair and if you want you can get it to go. Have a great time. read more
