I get the Tev's hype. This food is SMACKIN'. 5/5 stars for the Jamaican food they serve on the weekends, but I'm sure they crush it any day of the week. I love jerk chicken, and Tev's has what might be the best jerk chicken I've ever had. It's not your typical fall-off-the-bone style. It's more like grilled chicken thighs, but they're incredibly tender and packed with smoky, sweet flavor. So good. And everything Tev's puts on your plate is top-notch. High-quality ingredients, great portions, and absolutely worth the price. The patio out back is great too. It has that big family backyard gathering kind of feel. Will I be back? Absolutely. Beloved Jamaican soul food spot located in Vermont Square (area of Los Angeles close to Inglewood/ Baldwin Hills). It was my first and only visit (so far) and someone in line told me that they change their menu depending on the day. When I was there, they had oxtail and that's what I wanted! It's not necessarily cheap but it was definitely worth it. It came with Mac and cheese, rice and peas, cabbage, and a drink. And there was so much food it lasted me at least 2 meals and of I could remember correctly, maybe 3? The food was flavorful - well seasoned and prepared well. In order to order food you stand in a line - possibly starting outside - and you eventually come up to a window where you order and you pay. You then wait. Today I went to Tev's kitchen. All I ordered was sides. The cabbage was good as usual, but the Mac n cheese was so dry it tasted like it was days old...inedible. I also asked for gravy on my rice and peas, but drove all the way back home over 20 miles & it had none. If I could have taken it back I would have. Sorry Tev's, but do better. We pay too much for mediocre quality & as I said some of us drive far. Maybe put more into the quality of one location before opening another. I don't like to give low ratings but the system here for ordering should be addressed for a better experience for the customer. When you walk up there are two lines outside. One is for walk in and the other is for people who have already ordered. The security guard tells you when it's your time to go inside to stand in another line to order or pick up. Mind you the lines inside are semi crossed and confusing, so if the guard does not walk you in and point you to the correct spot you might be in the wrong line or unknowingly cut someone. There's a large menu board but it does not have the full menu stating the cost for additional sides, drinks or combos. And if they run out of items you don't know until you're at the window. When you get to the window they have a paper menu, I'm not sure why it is not available before reaching the window which would be convenient and save time. After I stood in line I ordered and received my number. They do not call names or numbers, I was told to get in the other line after 30 minutes, bruh! Itis!! Food coma!! This will be your result after eating from Tev's Kitchen. You're looking at Oxtail, Rice, Mac 'n cheese and Cabbage. I also purchased Wings, something I don't normally order. I saw the glistening sauce on a wing someone was eating, and I was curious. Don't skip on the cabbage. It's so tasty and perfecrly spicy which made it hard to stop eating. I purchased this order to go, arriving home over an hour later. I did not warm the food, and dove into the oxtail. They were small but plentiful, perfectly seasoned and the meat fell off the bone becoming addicting. I ate a couple of the tender wings and used the sauce as lipstick. Finger licking good. You'll love the wings . The Mac 'n Cheese will be your demise. It was tepid by the time I got home, but with every bite it was richer and more indulgent. I had been seeing this Tev's kitchen on IG for quite a while, so when my friends and I were in LA, we decided it was finally time to check it out. The day we went, they were featuring a pasta menu, so that's what was available. I ordered the jerk chicken and jerk shrimp pasta, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were on point, and everything was cooked just right. The service was great from start to finish. The only minor downside was that it was a little warm inside, but it wasn't enough to take away from the experience. My only wish is that there had been more menu options available that day because I was hoping to try some of their other dishes. That just gives me another reason to come back. Next time, I'll either catch a different menu at this location or check out their Gardena location. If you're in the area, definitely give this place a try. I love supporting local businesses and black/brown owned businesses, but the customer service is poor and crazy check in process for pick up/takeout. Yes... you read that right, check in process. We live up the street and it was our first time trying this spot to finally see what the buzz was about. I paid for the food using Apple Pay and had my husband pick it up. I did read that when picking up, you need to have a matching ID and the CC used to pay. So I sent my husband with both. The security who checks you in gave him such a hard time about it and denied his entrance because it needs to be the same name as the person on the receipt! So I had to go. I arrived, parking is difficult to find although it's in a residential area. So after I showed him my ID, CC, and Email confirmation, he then has to write down all this info from your email?? He said the last 4 digits didn't match my CC, so I let him know I paid with Apple Pay. He then asked me to open my Apple Pay App to then look at the history?! The food is good and flavorful , but in LA, you can find that elsewhere without all the hassle. We will not be going back, that's for sure. I COMPLIED!!! I was sent to the window to collect my now cold dinner. The cashier behind the window, had me sign and handed me our plate. THIS IS THE PART WHERE IT GETS CRAZY!!! Food paid and signed for, security (6 ft plus man) runs down a 5ft black woman to her car, bangs on her window , blocks car and accuse us of stealing, even though the food that their cash cashier handed her has already been paid for I know I'm repeating this but it's imperative that you get it, because if there was a mistake made with the refund process, it wasn't made on my part. It was made on their cashier. He didn't follow through, but yet the security guard blocked me and said he was following me. Wow, support black businesses. When I arrived, it took a few minutes to be acknowledged, and I was redirected a couple of times without clear communication. I expected an ID check, but the process felt excessive: having to show my email, ID, credit card, and then Apple Pay. Their sides of macaroni and cheese and cabbage are really good, I eat the rice as well but with the other food choices it's not what I waste my stomach space on. The kool aid is suppper sweet, like the kind you used to make when left home alone as a child. The ordering process is a little different. I order online then when you go to pick up security verifies your credit card and ID. They direct you to the order window to get your food. You can order inside but the line is often long and then you will wait for the food next. On weekends they have a vendor selling delicious desserts. One thing no one talks about is the butter cake that you can order when you get to the register to pay--I don't know if you can order butter cake online as I've only been in person. That butter cake is delicious! Butter cake is a cousin to pound cake, but butter cake isn't as dense and it's more moist than other cakes. Also, this butter cake comes with a glaze that you pour on top. It is absolutely delicious. Highly recommend. If you decide to eat there, Tev's has a patio in the back. Now keep in mind these are their wings, but they assured me they dab it up with their famous jerk sauce. The jerk sauce had zero, and I mean zero flavor. If this is indeed the same sauce they use for their regular jerk chicken , I'm definitely not gonna be a fan . It is neither sweet , nor spicy. And that's the sina qua non of a good jerk chicken au jus. In fact, the sauce was so mild and bland, that if this was a blind taste test, and i didn't know it was a Jamaican restaurant , the last thing I would know is they're jerk wings. I don't want to be mean to the owners, but I'm just being honest. Their jerk sauce needs a fine-tune up if Im ever going to consider it among the pantheon of the greats. Not the greatest experience .
