My husband and I were in the area, so we decided to stop in for lunch. I ordered the fried chicken, breast and wing, which comes with two sides. I chose the collard greens and mac and cheese. The meal also came with two complimentary cornbread muffins. The chicken was really good. It was fried perfectly, crispy, and seasoned well. The sides, however, were just okay. I wasn't a fan of the greens or the mac and cheese because both were pretty bland. It tasted like no salt was added at all. I had to add pepper vinegar to the greens just to give them some flavor. Came here for lunch, after previously attempting, and found to be closed as it appeared to be getting remodeled. To my surprise, the place had been spruced up! I came during lunch and the place was packed as there was a couple of large groups dining. I ordered 1/4 white meat fried chicken, with black eyed peas w/rice, along with mashed potatoes with gravy. Unfortunately, they did not have my first choice side (corn with okra). The owner (Mr. Dulan) happened to be sitting at a table nearby and I made him aware that I was disappointed there was no corn with okra, he apologized and stated there would be some next time I come and he would give it to me without charge. I am not sure about parking on a crowded day. We came at the right time: 2PM on a Saturday. Parking right on the side. Two of us ordered chicken (one smothered and one baked) and the other orders the porch chop (he said it was OK) but our chicken was delicious and needed a dash of Louisiana for spice and "pouf" it was gone! We all ordered mac and cheese and mixed greens with cabbage: delicious (one dash of Louisiana and...you know...). They each ordered another plate to go. I hadn't been in this area in quite some time. I was amazed by the quality of the food, the excellent service, quickness of the serving staff, and the overall chill of the ambience. I wanted some meatloaf, but I can't get past that tomato sauce. I thought I saw some photos with brown gravy, but when I looked at the menu, there is no meatloaf with brown gravy. I went with Smothered Pork Chops, Mac and Cheese, extra 4 oz . gravy. I also ordered cabbage and greens mix, but received greens only. It's on my receipt. Reading is fundamental. So much for customer service. I took off a star for not honoring my request for Greens and Cabbage mix. That wasn't a "Special Request," it's on the menu. Wow is this place amazing! Fried chicken and all the sides were so delicious! I came here with my family of 9, and we ordered 3 family meals because the fried chicken was so good we needed at least 3 pieces each! The staff were so friendly, always checking in to see if we needed anything, and also the owner even checked in. You really felt welcomed and cared for! It was busy on a Sunday and yet every person that I approached or came to help always smiled genuinely. Music and the place was so lovely. No idea who I hadn't reviewed Dulan's before. Whatever the case, here goes ... Stopped in with friends to support the business and also because I gotta eat. Not to mention, totally love southern home cooking. Something about soul food almost makes me want to say "southern home cooking" is my comfort food, when asked the question. Anyway, No dedicated parking lot here. It's street parking but I've never had an issue here. I've always just turned onto the cross street and found spots in the residential areas. I don't know if there are restrictions but check for yourself. This most recent visit, was there for definitely more than an hour, and no ticket. Service was, and has always been excellent. So friendly and helpful. To the point that it was like I was a guest in someone's home and I was being told to just sit and relax, while they took care of everything. Even down to getting condiments, refills or other things that I could have easily went to the counter to get or ask for. As for the food - started with the corn bread muffins. I could eat those all day long. I had to stop before I filled up and couldn't enjoy the sides and my entree; meatloaf and basically just about the entire side menu. See pics. Ordered takeout from this location for the first time, and overall it was pretty decent--though I promise my grandma still cooks better! The macaroni was a bit on the bland side, but the fried catfish was excellent--crispy, flavorful, and definitely the highlight of my meal. I am so shocked to see that Dulan's has such a low rating on Yelp because my experience was nothing less than incredible! My boyfriend and I decided to check out Dulan's before a show nearby at CineVita. We got there around 7 pm on Saturday and managed to find street parking close by. We received a very warm welcome from their staff and manager, and were told how to proceed with our order. We decided on two fried chicken plates, which come with 2 cornbread muffins, and 2 sides. I chose Mac and cheese and dressing and my boyfriend got Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. You also have the option to pick between a two piece and four piece. We ended up going with the 2 piece which was more than enough, and portions are big, and you will be stuffed by the end of your meal. Once you order and pay for your meal upfront, you have the option to sit indoors in their beautifully decorated and spacious restaurant or in their heated outdoors section. The weather was lovely out, so we sat outside. Within a few minutes one of their staff brought us warm corn bread muffins with butter, which were amazing and the perfect start to the meal. A couple minutes later we received our fried chicken plates, which were so flavorful and delicious. The chicken was so perfectly fried, not greasy, and so juicy, and the sides were also seasoned well, and went so well with the chicken. My boyfriend and I have ever since been dreaming of going back. Very crispy and seasoned well, not too salty. Favorite sides: candied yams!!!, mac and cheese, cabbage, dressing with or without the gravy - it's good both ways. The cornbread comes with all the meals, but honorable mention for that as well. The service here is good, too. Even during busy times. I like dining in too, because I feel you get a little more (extra cornbread, bigger drinks). Sometimes the wait times are longer for to go orders but when I dine in the food comes out hot and quick. I've been coming to Dulan's for years, and even before that I was a regular at Aunt Kizzie's Back Porch in the marina, run by Greg Dulan's father, Adolf , back when I was in college. The legacy runs deep, and it shows. The food is always fresh. The service has never wavered. I've been here for community meetings and for meals with family, and every time the atmosphere feels welcoming. Now, for those who have read any of my reviews, you know people can make or break an experience. The staff was incredible. Patient with us while we worked out what we wanted, even explaining the best options and combinations. And after the food came out, the owner came around, checked, and chatted for a while. Come on, people!!! Now that is care, connection, and community. The food was grade-A delicious; everything came out freshly cooked, seasoning was tempered and balanced, you could taste it without it overpowering the food. I walk up and immediately start drooling the smell of soul food in the air is very intoxicating. my go to meal is almost always oxtails or fried chicken with a side of dressing greens macaroni and cheese potato salad and candied sweet potatoes. Here's what I ordered. Oxtails Tender and delicious smothered in gravy seasoned to perfection. 10/10 Dressing Thick fluffy and delicious just like my mom made. And drizzled with gravy it's the bomb. I0/10 Macaroni And Cheese It's good but needs a little more seasoning but it's still delicious. 8/10 Greens Tender perfection and seasoned very well. 8/10 Potato Salad Delicious it's a must have part of my meal I love it. 8/10 Candied Yams Tender buttery and sweet. 10/10 Last visit I had Yellow cake and chocolate frosting it's soo yummy. 10/10 I didn't get any this time and regretted it when I got home. lol It's always super crowded at Dylan's so be prepared to wait and believe you me it's definitely worth waiting for. We walked into Dulan's and immediately noticed the beautiful décor. Unfortunately, our experience with the service didn't match the welcoming atmosphere. When we arrived, the staff was taking individual orders from a party of about 35 people. We were asked to move to a separate line, which we did, but after that we were never acknowledged while the staff continued serving only the large group. After waiting about 20 minutes without anyone checking in with us or letting us know when we'd be helped, we decided to leave. Because we never had the opportunity to order, I can't comment on the food. If I could give half a star for service, I would. A simple acknowledgment--letting us know there would be a wait, offering a glass of water, or even just making us feel like our business mattered--would have made a big difference. You know a place is well loved when the people waiting in line with you start making recommendations on what to get. We came here because my cousins love to go here. The place was packed and there was still a line when we left. Service is not always the best. They have to go orders, but I would still consider waiting a bit for your food. it does get SUPER busy here, service staff is always running around doing something. However, when they realized that they forgot my order they were incredible apologetic. It was honestly very sweet. I got the deep fried lamb chops and the sour green bunt cake. Bundt cake was alright, better than other places, but it didn't impress me. However the deep fried pork chops were phenomenal! Pairing them with their hot sauce and collard greens, so freaking good. Also the price wasn't bad. For the price, I was able to eat for at least two meals, which is always gold! Overall, I plan to go back here and take new friends with me. I had lunch at Dulan's recently. Oh, and it's located on Crenshaw Blvd :) It has free street parking and also offers valet! That's what the sign said. Inside it's a counter service restaurant that offers indoor dining with outside covered patio seating too. Inside it has a nice interior with background music. A lot of people also come to get it to go. I ordered the smothered pork chops (2) that comes with rice and gravy and two sides for $24. I chose red beans and dressing for my sides. I wanted black eyed peas but they were out at the time so I went with the dressing. Either a soft drink and tax my meal came to $29.51. The food took about 15 minutes to arrive. I started with the 2 cornbread muffins that came with the meal. They were perfect! (5). Delicious, moist and flavorful. I have never had any better. The red beans were barely warm. Flavor wise they were good but needed more temperature. The dressing and brown gravy were very good tasting and hot along with the two chops which were tender and flavorful too. Ditto on the white rice and gravy under the chops. Also they serve their soft drinks and tea in large mason jars. Altogether this was a good tasting meal. The only negatives were the red beans temperature and the fact that this soul food lunch cost me almost $30 but then this is La La Land, right? I give a 4 score overall. Took my University intern here to celebrate their graduation from their Social Work Master's Program from UCLA and they insisted on having soul food. I told them I knew the perfect spot! I had a 2-piece fried chicken with sides (collard greens w/turkey and mac and cheese) and my wife had a 2-piece smothered chicken with sides. Soda machines weren't working so we had a lemonade and a sweet mint tea. The food was excellent and the portions were generous. My friend took me to Dulan's for a late lunch a few weeks ago. There was a private event in the patio, so the staff were very occupied. As a result, the wait was longer than anticipated, but I just knew my food would be worth the wait. I chose the meatloaf with collard greens and macaroni & cheese as sides, plus sweet tea. Staff gave us fresh cornbread muffins, which were diviiiine. And my meal was SO delicious. I cleaned that plate! Staff were so nice and kind, and apologetic for the delay in service.
