Went in asked for crispy pancakes. Had planned to order to go but decided to eat in. I took a seat ordered a cup of coffee, didn't get a full cup. Ordered The Crenshaw and subbed for 1 pancake for a $2 up charge. I was asked if I wanted powered sugar on my pancakes after they were already made. I told her, the owner, no. By the tone of her voice she wasn't happy with my answer. Perhaps she should've asked if I was okay with "powder sugar" when taking my order. She asked the cook to make another pancake. When the pancake was delivered to the table it was tap hard all over. I told her the pancake was hard not crispy. She said I asked for them crispy but didn't specify the edges only. Many people and chefs know what you mean when you ask for crispy pancakes. And if you don't know ask. She got such an ugly attitude saying we made them for you once already I' m going to make them for you again but no more. As she was walking away she was still talking with bad grace. All I could do was shake my head. I didn't cause the problem, you did! I was going to get up and leave but decided to finish the meal and pay, and never to return. The pancake she brought back to the table was crispy around edges but turned it over and it was not good looking to me, smh. Nevertheless I finished up with my breakfast. I noticed I wasn't asked if I wanted a refill of water or coffee like the couple sitting next to me was asked nor was I asked if everything was okay. Went to pay they added on an extra charge for using my card totaling $24.47. She asked if I wanted a receipt I said yes and when handing it over she says "here you go." Lol wow! Is this how you represent your own business! No business courtesy! Overall the meal was just okay but you can for sure get more for your money elsewhere along with much better service. Yes, this is a follow-up to my review of their Breakfast Burrito with Catfish (no bacon or sausage), but this takes on more of what Breakfast with Milli has to offer. It is a place where you walk in and feel welcome like home. Decorated with care, cozy seating, and a clean and open kitchen where you can see your meal come to life! I Googled "Soul Breakfast in the Crenshaw District" and it led us to a listing that said "Chef Marilyn's Breakfast Spot" right across Marlton from the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza (the Crenshaw Mall). After parking and walking up, we saw the cute little place now called "Breakfast at Milli's." We entered and were immediately greeted with warm, "Good mornings" and "hellos!" and the delicious scents of down home breakfast foods cooking. I asked should we grab a menu and pick a seat, and Milli said, "You sure can!" So we did. The menu looked amazing and we got right to it. We ordered Chicken & Waffles, salmon croquette balls, a breakfast burrito, and The Crenshaw Blvd, which included eggs, bacon or sausage (we chose AND ), home fries (or grits), and choice of toast or biscuit (we chose biscuit). When I say everything was delicious...EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS!!! Even the coffee was perfect and cold or room temperature ketchup was offered and available. I asked for a pat of butter and Milli said, "No problem! Look right next to you along the table. There should be some there, but, if not, I got you!" Sure enough, I looked to my right and, along the table next to the jams, salt, peppermint, and sugar, was a perfect little row of butter pats wrapped in cellophane!​ All I can say is, "Go there! I decided to stop by Marilyn's Breakfast Spot today after noticing it tucked away in a strip mall near Chef Marilyn's other takeout location on Crenshaw. I'm so glad I did! I came with my family, and all four of us were impressed with our meals. My son had the breakfast burrito and loved how well-portioned the ingredients were. My other son and husband enjoyed the French toast and eggs so much that they cleaned their plates! I had the shrimp and grits, and they were flavorful and authentic. The restaurant has a cozy diner vibe, with a few tables and a wrap-around counter. The service was great, and the decor and hospitality reflected the best of the Crenshaw area. Admittedly, I've never been to the original spot further up Crenshaw, so I'm only basing this review off this MLK location. The place looks fairly new (used to be a pizza/Italian spot). I see the vibes the owner is going for, and given the challenge of the area they're in, I wish them well. However, the food needs to be to be considerably better. My wife had the shrimp and grits and said the shrimp tasted old. I had an omelette - nothing was technically wrong with it, but it didn't taste better than anything my wife or I could make at home. The toast was served without butter, and it wasn't until we were well into the meal did the server (nice but inexperienced) ask if we wanted butter. Given that you have restaurants like Post n Beam nearby and M'Dears not terribly far away, people like my wife won't mind paying a bit more for better tasting breakfast dishes, especially places that make better versions of what this menu offers (like shrimp n grits). The salmon croquette balls were pretty good. Also, have at least one high chair for the little ones. Takes away from the experience when folks can't focus on the food or ambiance bc they gotta keep their tykes from roaming. read more
