I've always seen Tal's Cafe around but after seeing a few videos and reviews on it, I decided to give it a try. I thought this was a pretty good neighborhood restaurant with super affordable prices and the food was decent as well. It was refreshing knowing there are still original and black owned restaurants in our neighborhood.

The foods good but the waits horrendous I don't think they have a good system I ordered 1 2x2 which is just bacon, eggs, and pancakes and it took them over an hour to do it

My first time coming here was with my walk/run club. On the days we came there was music videos or tiny desk concerts on the television and we world be in there laughing and singing. Love the friendly neighborhood atmosphere. It's small but kinda cozy. You feel welcomed here and I love that. The food is decent.... I'm not gonna lie, it isn't always the same and I think it may depend on the cook that day. I recently had a pick up order for breakfast and it was delicious. I don't usually eat pancakes but I love them at Tal's.

Tal's Cafe is now under new management, and they are working hard to ensure the quality of the food reflects a return to the restaurant's glory days in the 1980s when I first discovered it. Unfortunately, the food is a hit and miss. A few weeks ago the food was good. However, today the burger patty was burnt, and the wings were fried in old grease that caused my relative to have diarrhea. Parking can be a challenge, especially on street-sweeping days. I would also suggest that they encourage customers not to linger outside the restaurant to smoke weed.

Entered to smiles and a welcome! We sat ourselves at a clean booth! I loved the life quotes on the black painted walls and, always love, seeing my President Obama and family portrait on the wall! Ok, in all honesty, Definitely go there hungry! Not starving! Hungry. Good food takes time, lol! Kudos to our server, Unique! She was thorough in explaining and answering all our questions. My veggie omelette was hot and perfectly prepared (well done) and I had a side order of the grits. My only complaint, they were not hot grits! Come on! . My husband had five pieces of chicken, wings, no wing tips, with his perfect eggs and well done waffle (which arrived late but I digress), he enjoyed everything, even the late to the table waffles! We will be back! Ty! P.S. was not a problem.

My first time visiting this place and it was such a vibe! The staff were courteous and down-to-earth, the service was excellent and the food was sooo good! I'm very picky when it comes to my grits, no everyone can make them right. These however were PERFECT. I felt like I was back home in my aunties kitchen. The parking isn't good, it's on a Main Street and the side residential street next to it is very strict with parking. When I arrived the owner made an announcement to everyone that we must move our cars to avoid a ticket (I didn't notice the sign that said no parking from like noon to 4pm or something). I was super grateful that she warned us in advance and gave us time to move our vehicles while waiting for our orders!

We were looking for a brunch spot and wanted to support a local business so we chose Tal's. Off first glance, it's a traditional small breakfast/ brunch spot that I grown up frequenting. The service was good. They greeted us and allowed us some time to view the menu. I ordered chicken wings, egg whites, home fries and sour dough bread. The wings were not bad but I wouldn't get them again; however, they taste like they were fried in the same grease the fish is fried in. The egg whites portion was hella small. I know it's only two eggs, but I would recommend getting more eggs if you are an egg lover. The home fries were very good. My son had a waffle that he loved. I taste it and it was very good and light. My wife had the same view as I about the chicken. She also had a waffle that she really enjoyed. The grits she stated were just ok. All in all the restaurant is a cool spot to go to if you are in the mood for simple eats. I gave it a decent 3 stars with nothing truly bad to say.

First and last time. Came on a Tuesday at 11:50AM and didn't get out food until 1:10PM. Restaurant wasn't busy at all, there was a normal amount of people, someone got their food in a fraction of the time we did and they got here 20 minutes after us. The actual restaurant was nice, it felt like a diner. The rating is this low because of how god damn long they had us waiting. I also ordered bacon with my food and even when everything else was out it STILL wasn't here. :( Very sad knowing the food is good but the wait time ruined it for us.

Porkchops, grits, scrambled eggs with cheese and an English muffin.
    Derek B.

Damn that was good! My first time here and I had : porkchops, grits, scrambled eggs with cheese and English muffins . Big sized servings for a man with a big appetite. The porkchops were so good that you could eat them straight out the pan without adding any additional condiments..... but I did dribble a little Red Rooster hot sauce( a tradition with me) . The eggs with cheese were perfectly scrambled. Fanfriggintastic' breakfast. Next time I'll try either the fried catfish or snapper. One more thing: patrons rave about the hotcakes here...and by the looks of them I see why.

Our waiter was personable and took our order quickly as well as consistently replenished our drinking water. Everything was delicious and had its own unique flavor, from the chickpea fritters which had softness and crunchiness, the goat mousse with sweet and savory sauces and the crumpets and crackers; then the goat belly with a deliciously crisp skin and soft inside and intense flavor (but not gamey) with a rich sauce, the steak was yummy and precut, and the pork shank which was epic! I loved all the greens and pita to wrap the pork and goodies into! We ended with a bday scoop of mango sticky ice cream which was completely different than I've had before and yummy.

The standouts were the green beans, the Brussels sprouts that came with the chicken, the pork shank and the tuna and crunchy quinoa salad. I'm still thinking of that crunchy quinoa. We had no room for dessert. So maybe next time we try the goat curry, get the quinoa salad again and get dessert! The service was great too. Attentive but not overbearing. I ended up ordering the Santo's Turkey Melt which is smoked turkey, grilled onions, Swiss cheese, and chipotle aioli served on sourdough with a side of french fries. Manuela's commitment to ingredient-driven cuisine is immediately evident. Each dish is composed with intention, showcasing a depth of flavor that reflects both technique and sourcing. We began with the honey cornbread skillet--warm, rustic, and satisfying, though I found myself wishing for a more generous glaze to fully deliver on its promise. To drink, we ordered the "Vesper," a James Bond-inspired martini. It was assertive and spirit-forward, yet balanced enough to remain refreshing--a confident execution of a classic profile. Keeping things simple, we opted for the chicken sandwich and the venison burger. Both were expertly prepared, highlighting the kitchen's ability to elevate familiar formats through quality ingredients and precise execution. It's worth noting that the menu is entirely à la carte, and while the sides come at a premium, the farm-to-table ethos helps justify the price point. Service was another standout. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and refreshingly candid--guiding us through the menu with thoughtful recommendations and transparency. While not without minor critiques, it remains a compelling choice for those seeking a refined yet grounded dining experience in Downtown Los Angeles.
