I visited this café today with high hopes, and I left feeling deeply disappointed. I'll start with the positive: the seasonal drink I ordered was genuinely exceptional. It was creative, unique, and unlike anything I've had at a typical coffee shop. Unfortunately, the quality of the drink was overshadowed by the way I was treated, and because of that, I won't be returning. From the moment I walked in, I felt invisible. I entered the café and was not greeted by either employee. While I initially brushed it off, I couldn't help but notice that a white customer who entered shortly after me was immediately welcomed by both staff members. As I waited for my drink, I observed a man who appeared to be the owner or manager interacting with customers. He offered a white customer a sample to try, engaged him in conversation, and also spoke with another white customer who had entered separately. Throughout my entire visit, despite standing only a few feet away, he never acknowledged my presence; not with a greeting, a question, or even simple eye contact. The moment that solidified my discomfort came after I received my drink. Wanting to compliment it, I spoke loudly enough for both the employee who made it and the man assisting customers to hear. I said, "Wow, this drink is unbelievable, unlike anything I've had." Both of them looked directly at me and said nothing. There was no "thank you," no smile, no acknowledgment whatsoever. They simply looked at me and returned to what they were doing. I've replayed that interaction in my mind all day because it was blatant racism from the owner/manager who is an Asian man. As a black person, I left feeling unwelcome and excluded after watching other customers receive warmth and engagement that I did not. For that reason, I cannot recommend this business based on my experience. read more

My go to local coffee shop! You can tell everyone who works here genuinely loves and cares about coffee. Smaller menu than some big chain shops, but it's because the drinks they do have are well thought out and intentional. The Yuenyeung latte is my favorite both hot and iced (I believe it's coffee with hong kong milk tea), but I also love getting the Apple Americano on hot days where I want something refreshing :) I don't get pastries often but the few times I did they were goooodddd. The meat in the little meat pies was so so good, and I believe there was a really good tomato egg danish (?) I got those for last minute breakfast at some point and don't remember the names, but I remember them being delicious and fueling me well for what I had to do that day! read more

Coffee shop with Asian twist! Certainly triggering my excitement to the ceiling, especially spotting Yuanyang Latte on their menu, carrying out a blend of Oolong syrup and espresso shot. What I loved about their version was it's not overly bold like original one typically served in any kopitiam which I loved but not my tummy (yep deep frowned); so Halfday thanks for inventing this version for me! First sip and it got me sold; pretty surprised that the oolong was just syrup yet the flavor stood out pretty bold. The coffee also suited my liking, solid in flavor yet not acidic. One improvement I wish would be to have the online pre-order to be kept open until the outlet's closing time. We were heading there an our pre-closing time and intended to pre-order yet the online order seemed to close earlier. The menu is simple yet thoughtfully curated, featuring unique coffees and teas sourced from Ethiopia, Asia, and South America. They also offer specialty-crafted coffee and tea made in-house. The barista took the time to explain the menu and persuaded me to try the Ethiopian pour-over, the Alo Village -- a great recommendation. Prices are in line with what you'd expect from a boutique coffee shop, but the quality made it well worth it. The shop itself is small and not ideal for lingering inside, though they do offer a few outdoor tables and seating. A welcome addition to the neighborhood and definitely worth a visit. read more

I was in the area on my way to run an errand and stopped by. The drive was simple, and there was free street parking available. Look for the orange plastic stools, and you've found the place! Their menu is a good size and varied. I ordered their Yuzu Matcha Tonic and a regular drip coffee. It cost $14.40 with tip. The matcha tonic was delicious! The sweetness was subtle. I could taste the earthiness of the matcha and the tartness of the tonic. I enjoy tonics this way. The drip was OK. The acidity was mild. The service was cool, the staff were welcoming, and the wait time was less than 5 minutes. Unfortunately, this isn't a spot for studying or remote work. There are no tables, but plenty of seating. Folks were taking their drinks to-go, probably heading to work. It is a good social spot to catch up with friends. They also sell pastries, which I didn't get to try on this visit. I drove 45 min for this, and it was worth it. This coffee shop is for someone with strong opinions on beans, roast, and/or method (me). This place is also for someone who enjoys interesting lattes and fun, seasonal drinks (also me). The Yuanyang latte (coffee x black tea) is a must try. I love that I can walk there and every single time I've gone, whether it was a quiet morning or if it was packed the staff has been so friendly, taking their time with your drink and making sure it's done right. There are a couple of tables outside but on a bright hot day it could be too toasty without umbrellas. I came here mainly as a quick stop because I was doing laundry near by so I can't really speak to the ability to work or study for a prolonged period of time but the iced matcha latte I got was well balanced with just the right amount of sweetness. I always ask for my matcha to be extra sweet bc the baseline is a bit bitter (as matcha should be) I'm just a sweet tooth who enjoys extra sweet. Super cute and quant coffee shop. I was at the pottery class next door and after I saw the shop. The next time I came I decided I wanted to give it a try. They have a small defined menu, coffee match and hot chocolate. I decided to go for the macha. The barista told me they had one mixed with apple juice. Of course I got it. It was so good! You can tell it is not the over processed apple juice they use. If you like the earth tasting matcha this isn't it (it is better). My friend got the matcha with vanilla syrup and she liked it. I have been here twice coming from Inglewood to Downtown. The hidden spot is so exciting, my first time I order the Yuenyeung Coffee which, a seasonal drink. When I tried it, I got in love with it, no too sweet and no bland at all, I don't know what is made of, but it has become one of my favorite hot drinks besides lattes. In addition, the barista (owner possibly) gave me to taste their cold brew coffee and I was impressed on the notes it had. I love hot drinks more than cold, but I would say that I would never forget that cold brew he gave me to taste. The service, they are quite, but I was able to chat to the owner and to tell him that his spot is beautiful. He told me a bit about their art pieces at the wall. The ambience is so different, the outside design and the inside transports you to another place like Amsterdam, some how I felt I was not in Jefferson nor in LA at all. *sigh* another black person with an identical review to the other black people. i'm born and raised in south central. jefferson + crenshaw is my territory. this is my neighborhood. i saw this cafe go up and got excited because Cafe 5 isn't super consistent. so i couldn't wait to try. every time i go in, it seems the white clientele is at home. the asian owner refused to make eye contact with me. the blonde white barista is so rude, it makes me want to combust. there was one girl there, a brunette with curly hair who was always super sweet to me and literally carried the customer service on behalf of the staff because no one else spoke. i went in nearly every day for like a month and every day, the blonde girl asked me my name as if she didn't see me daily for the last month. it was so microaggressive and so infuriating. because every other white customer that stepped in, they knew their names. they were following up on previous conversations they had. the brunette girl remembered my name. she would ask how i was doing. even remembered my order. so i kept coming back due to convenience because i live down the block and it's on my way to work. it seems as if the brunette no longer works there and the shift in service is so jarring; there's no way i can return. not only does LA not need another sterile + lifeless coffee shop; but south central doesn't need another asian / white establishment that goes so far out of their way to make the black locals + residents + natives feel incredibly unwelcome, invisible, disposable, unappreciated, undervalued. the audacity of this owner and his staff to set up shop in a deeply historically black neighborhood and engage with us the way they do. but truly, this is the name of the game. there's no need for them to value a black clientele because they've managed to create such a safe + embracing environment for white customers who they can rely on to support the business. white people flock to this place daily + intensely. this is 100% a business that panders to its white customers and retention is the result. they literally drool over the white people as soon as they step in lmao. it's kind of funny to watch because it's so predictable and unoriginal. i know these places exist all over the city. i just wish they'd take they're deeply racist disdain for black people OUT OF THE BLACK NEIGHBORHOODS. what upsets me most is they impeded on my back door, stepped foot on my territory, bought property on my block and decided to make me feel unwanted in my home. imagine that? i will never in a million years return to this place. i've spent so much money here. introduced so many people to this place and yet each time i walk in, i get nothing. i can feel everyone's reluctance to engage with me. it's hurtful. it's pathetic. i hope the owner doesn't reply to this with an AI generated response explaining how my experiences are isolated and not a true reflection of the cafe's ethics or that they take these types of allegations seriously lmao. i've essentially been going there weekly, daily for majority of the year and i kid you not, all of my black friends who have been here, say the same thing. the thing about racism is, it's not always active. it's reflexive. it can be passive. it's engrained. it's not always overt like in the 1950s. but it's so consistent with this owner and particularly the blonde girl. they would never ever strike up conversation with me. they actually speak to everyone BUT me. the most i get is a "thank you" when walking out the door. but that's only if it's crowded and they have an audience. but my final visit last week didn't even include that. i actually heard them laughing at my order specification after i placed my order .... idk what's funny about wanting "very little vanilla" but hey, whatever i guess lol. places like this are a stain on south central. i'm embarrassed by it and i want so much better for the black natives + locals who haven't been displaced or priced out by businesses and clientele like this. there are less and less places for us to go where we feel appreciated. it's heartbreaking. read more
