After trying three popular places for matcha this spot took number 1. The matcha here is hand-whisked and perfectly balanced not overly sweet like the others. The hojicha with cream top was a standout too: thick, smooth, lightly sweet, with a delicious roasted, nutty flavor. And the pastries are amazing, I've already gone back twice for the black sesame Oreo madeleine and still thinking about them. Only down side is the parking lot is packed. Most good quality matchas start tasting about the same to me in latte form, but the real standout at Damo is what you get for $7-8. Many other cafes will give you a fraction of the matcha here, and if you want a double or triple shot, enjoy that $14 matcha! Damo is one of my favorite cafes in LA, and definitely has a special place in my heart because it's where I discovered hojicha! Their hojicha is so nutty, creamy, and balanced. It's not too sweet but just enough that it brings out the hojicha's flavor. I've also tried their matcha, which I think is equally as delicious. You can tell Damo uses good quality hojicha and matcha, which is why I keep coming back. The cafe is also super aesthetic and if it weren't so busy, I imagine it would be a decent place to study. It's is located in a small plaza so parking can be difficult during more busy hours, but I've never struggled too much and normally find parking within 10 minutes. I visited Damo in Koreatown this afternoon and tried the Strawberry Einspänner. It was a bit on the sweet side, but overall delicious. However, I was quite disappointed by the lack of decaf options. I am very sensitive to caffeine, so while I enjoy regular coffee in the morning, I always have to stick to decaf in the afternoon. When I asked which menu items could be made decaf, I was told that none of their coffee or matcha drinks have a decaf option. The only decaf-friendly choices available were the Strawberry Einspänner and the Strawberry Tonic. Because of this, I'll only be able to visit this spot in the morning if I want coffee. I went with my cousin this past Friday morning before convincing my friend to go earlier today after church. The line at DAMO isn't too long, and they're pretty fast at making the drinks. Both times I've gone, the drinks have been consistent and the perfect "not too sweet" level for me. HOJICHA EINSPENER - 7 I didn't realize until after I ordered that it's not hojicha latte with hojicha cream -- it's just hojicha tea, which was a much more refreshing and lighter option. And I really enjoyed it! The hojicha tea was pretty roasty and the strength was perfect. The cream was smooth and also had a good hojicha flavor. The hojicha tea was delicious on its own but also great when mixed with the hojicha cream. MATCHA LATTE - 7 My cousin got the Matcha Einspener, and I really enjoyed the earthiness of matcha, but didn't find the white cream necessary. So I tried the matcha latte instead, and it was perfect. This is seriously some high quality matcha drink. The flavor was deep with a nice frothy texture. I would highly recommend. If you're already in this plaza, definitely grab a matcha or hojicha (can't say which one I like more) from DAMO and swing over to Out of Ordi for some salt bread. That combination hits, and I did it twice while I was visiting. I would highly recommend this pipeline -- my cousin/friend waited in line at OOO while I grabbed the drinks from DAMO. I always dread going into ktown since its so hard to find parking. But to my surprise, there was lots of parking on a Monday where Damo is located at the plaza. Probably because Out of Ori is closed on Mondays? There are 5 tables and individual seating too towards the entrance. They have free wifi and the password is located on the menu in the front. The AC is a bit cold so be sure to bring a jacket if youre planning on staying at the cafe. This cafe is definitely a good place to study at. If you're in L.A go to Koreatown, you have to stop by Damo Coffee. I tried three different drinks, and I'm not exaggerating when I say they were all so good but the strawberry matcha? The chocolate cream top on the Chocolate Forest was excellent paired with the strong earthy matcha ~ the cream tasted like chocolate pudding. The drink was perfectly sweetened and definitely had a decent amount of matcha (very energizing that's for sure). The Chestnut Einspaner was unique (first time seeing this flavor einspanner anywhere). It was a sweet latte with a fun lil surprise at the bottom [a softened chestnut]. This drink was also very tasty if you enjoy sweeter lattes! The presentation was cute and the service was efficient. I'd come back in the future when I'm around the area again. We decided to try DAMO because many people online were praising their great matcha flavor and thick einspanner foam. We don't usually go to many matcha places anymore because many have either fishy matcha, too bitter, or gritty texture. For those reasons, we are on the hunt for good matcha. We ordered the matcha einspanner and the strawberry matcha einspanner to test validity of the online claims. I believe the only adjustment that can be made to the drinks is the milk type. No adjustment to sweetness or ice level was made. I'm happy to report that everything said online is true. The matcha itself was had nice grassy notes, a smooth texture, and perfectly sweet. They use Monin syrups as their sweetener of choice. The einspanner layer was thick and similarly perfectly sweet. For the strawberry syrup, it had nice texture of mashed macerated strawberries. The drink itself was also decorated beautifully with a small dusting of matcha towards the opening of the lid. I would come back for just the matcha but the ambiance just added to the charm. Very simple and elegant with many charger locations. I loved the ambiance with the incense and tiny tea pots/ tools to make tea. 5/5, would recommend. read more
