This place offered me a moment of rest that I was looking for with intention. Basically, imagine a bride wanting a certain pair of lace gloves that would complete her big day ensemble. And she goes to this out-of-the-way bridal shop because she knows that is where she will find her finger-pockets, the ones she wanted and knew that place could deliver. That is basically why I went here. I had an hour to myself and I needed some restorative rest that would translate my fuel for the day. Whether or not I would accomplish my day's task with glee, was in question, but the rest in this morning, was kind of not. Thus, the question becomes why did I know tht this place would give me the rest I kind-of needed? Well, dear Yelp reader, this place has a speakeasy that feels like the opposite of a dungeon of pain: Cleopotra's, Queen of The Nile, favorite comfort space for her and her cats. The room had throw pillows, an Agrabarian motif, and inviting sitting places whose comfort spoke of lounge level craddiling. To be clear it had no cats. Before entering the speakeasy, I ordered a drink, a specialty of the house- Harun's Coco Vanilla Cappucino. The barista, I forgot his name, gave excellent service. He also reminded me that my coffee had coconut milk. I have never really try it to determine if I am a fan or not but today, on speakeasy time, cocunut milk would be allowed. I entered the Speakeasy and there was another person there on the phone. I imagined that I would have the place to myself. It was soon after 7:00 a.m. But I would go ahead as planned, I mean it was another person, not a mosh level crowd. I scanned the room. Where could I sit just perfect? The chairs that looked like love seats perch in the center? No. There was no audiance for me to view from those chairs. There was a place that had sunken seats, and looked circular. This is the most Agraba looking thing in the joint. I wish I knew what it was called. But imagine Princess Jasmine's bedroom right, and in the center she has a collection of pillows, and blankets, that together make the sitting place for tigers and humans and I guess monkeys too. I did not want to sit in the ground, despite the blankets. And then I found it: one of those sofas that has a section where the last chair extends so you can lay your body. I am realizing how much I do not know about furniture names. Like a sectional with a bed sit? So this is where I sat and stretched my legs. I had to get up, not too much though, to enjoy my cofee. I did enjoy my coffee. I did not love it. I enjoyed the different taste that I had not known before. it tasted earthy. And I have had coconut milk from like a cocunut but here, the milk felt, undistinguised amidst the other ingredients. Like would I go out of my way to have cocunut milk again? No. It did not offer something unique enough for me to describe as good enough for me to wanted again. But hey if cocunot milks makes your wave flow, I can see how this drink is your Mai Tai of day. This place is a diamond in the rough. Go seek pleasure and sip and rest here. This is the space for it. Harun Coffee is 5 stars all around! The service, decor, ambiance, and coffee were all 10/10. I stopped by with my two boys and tried the Coco Vanilla Cappuccino and the Sticky Situation Matcha. When you first walk in, you're greeted by a small yellow coffee shop with minimal decor and a huge mirror. But the real surprise is the hidden door that leads to a speakeasy-style lounge. The atmosphere is moody, sexy, and full of character. It has a historic feel that makes the entire space an absolute vibe! I absolutely loved my Coco Vanilla Cappuccino. The coffee was bold, with the vanilla and mocha adding the perfect touch without overpowering it. My boys enjoyed a regular cup of milk and chocolate milk, which they loved. They also loved the atmosphere! The space felt relaxing and welcoming, making it a great spot for all of us to enjoy. I love going here - at least every other week. The pastries are amazing, and so are the drinks. I would say that this is a great addition to the businesses in Leimert Park. Parking isn't too bad, and the K Line (metro train) is not far from here either. The service is fast, and I enjoy the vibe of the place overall. The back portion, or rather the portion to the side (behind the door), is a nice place to chill and write. I love the seating. The music selection is always on point. I don't buy merch from places often, but I definitely would get their merch. No lie, you could sit in that restroom for an hour, just reading the wallpaper. So cool! P.S. Such a cute hidden spot to chill, study, or just hang out for a bit. The whole vibe is very record store/music inspired and feels super cozy without trying too hard. The menu is pretty simple and they don't have a ton of pastry options, but honestly the quality of the coffee makes up for it. Everything tasted well made and balanced. The staff was also really welcoming and friendly, which always makes a difference. Plus they have wifi, so it's actually a great little place to get work done or relax for a while. I want to thank the owner, the butter-cream complexioned miss, and the younger copper complexioned gentleman, for being kind and humoring me. Me, being very nerdy and awkward, asked them a lot of questions, and they kindly obliged. I am grateful for the chit chat and great drinks. My initial order was the hojicha latte, some of the best I have tasted outside of Little Tokyo and K-town. Then, because I didn't want to just sit there waiting without an order, I purchased a lychee oolong tea and much later, the summer tonic, one for me and one for the person I was meeting with. Both tasted wonderful, but the summer tonic felt special. Never knew that tropical fruit and matcha could pair so well together! Definitely worth the trip. Quick story. Like the Steve Urkel that I am, I spilled my hojicha latte on the table. The owner without hesitation, offered to make me another one for free. She even quickly wiped the table without any hint of malice or attitude. I declined the offer, but I will never forget her kindness, because let's be real, that hojicha ain't cheap. And I know because I buy mine from Sugimoto Tea Co. for $18.00, about 0.33 cents a gram. When it comes to costs, remember that inputs and labor requires more money than the past, and that inflation impacts everything and everywhere. Their prices are comparatively slightly cheaper than similiar shops in South LA and outside of it. This ain't the hood (even the hood is hella expensive), rent ain't cheap. I treat this place like the weekly luxury that it is. Well worth it! *Leimert Park isn't the hood, it's where the African American/Black middle and upper middle class used to live (some still do, but the demographics have considerably changed, much more diverse). Not all African American/Black neighborhoods can be considered hood. Not that it's bad to be hood though. read more

Harun Coffee is definitely a community staple. Their Earl Grey latte was smooth, not too sweet. I paired it with a homemade biscuit and strawberry jam, egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich, which was delicious. The Harun staff always shows genuine love, too, and makes you feel welcome, no rush at all. Then that speakeasy annexed to the main cafe was a totally different mood, with low lights and a time-capsule, retro, music/art space with vintage furnishings. Harun Coffee is a staple in Leimert Park, and I knew I had to come back and officially try their drinks! So right off the bat, I do want to say it's not my first time here, as I've come for different events such as album listening sessions and even seeing Terrance Martin live, which was a nice experience. But after seeing the summer guava lemon tonic with matcha with a little extra sweetener on their signature drink menu, I needed to make the stop, and I'm so glad I did. Not only were the drinks visually pleasing, but they also tasted even better, and I now have another place added to my list for quality matcha tonics! From the time we walked in until we left, the employees were so welcoming, and you could really see the love that they had for bridging community and coffee together, and I walked away learning so much about our culture! I'm such a major proponent of community spaces in our neighborhood, and I love what this space is increasingly becoming for so many because it's so necessary for us. Leimert Park is a place that needs to be protected because of what it means to us and the community that has come from it for decades and I hope others treat our neighborhood with respect and consideration! I came here on my break and ordered a latte with an egg and cheese biscuit with jelly and it was divine. The servings are small but good. It's expensive for a coffee and small egg biscuit I paid $21! But was it worth? Hell yes it was! I'm not sure if I ever tasted a coffee this good before. Not sure if it was the coffee itself was good or if it was the way the girl behind the counter made it. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that the wall was a door and the portal to one of the most comfortable cafes I've been in. Ordering was a breeze and the helpful staff got me a vanilla latte and the chicken biscuit in what felt like moments. Both were good and enjoyed in the side room that was an inviting warm/brown. The seating was plush and comfortable and folks could be found in every corner. Conversations, reading, and work were getting done everywhere I could see. Drinks are a little expensive, but the quality is good, so I'll keep coming back. One thing I'll say- parking here sucks. This isn't Harun's fault. It's the whole street. The parking area is poorly designed. It's a waste of space. The parking spaces are TOO long. They could have diagonal parking on both sides, but then shorten them a little, AND have a 5 min temporary parking strip right in the middle so that cars can still pass through no prob. I used to frequent this area a lot on Sundays back when Sika Shop was around and hosted the African Market Festival (usually in August or September), so when I noticed this coffee shop had opened, I was curious. I'm more into matcha, while my daughter leans toward coffee, so we decided to give it a try. When we walked in, it wasn't very busy, two women ahead of us and two women working behind the counter (one older cashier and a younger woman making drinks). My daughter was looking for something along the lines of a vanilla latte with caramel and cinnamon, but didn't really see anything that matched what she usually likes. She asked a few questions, but the cashier didn't seem very engaged or warm, even sipping on a drink. It just didn't feel welcoming, which immediately set the tone. I went ahead and ordered a matcha with cream top (12 oz) for $13. For context, the most I've ever paid elsewhere for a 16 oz matcha is around $8.50, so this felt steep. I told myself maybe it would be worth it... but unfortunately, it wasn't. It tasted mostly like straight milk, with very little matcha flavor. Nothing memorable. There was a really pretty drink I noticed, purple in color with matcha and what I believe was coconut water. I actually would've preferred to try that, and later a guy who came in and answered my questions about it was quite nice. But first impressions matter, and the initial vibe didn't really rub me the right way. I will say: the décor is nice. My daughter went into the second room/hidden area next door and said it was really cute. I've also seen videos on IG and it does look aesthetically pleasing. I really wanted to love this place. It being Black-owned and located in an area I used to frequent often, especially when I would bring my daughter here when she was younger, made me genuinely excited to support it. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of what I was hoping for. Between the lack of warmth, the underwhelming drink, and the $13 milky matcha... it's a no for me. I won't be returning. read more

I stopped by Harun Coffee and decided to try their hibiscus lemonade, so good. It was sweetened with something (can't quite remember what), but it had the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness, which I really enjoyed. I also ordered a chai tea, which was decent; I personally prefer mine a bit stronger, but it was still enjoyable. The customer service really stood out. The guy taking our order was warm, welcoming, and didn't rush us at all, which made it a great first experience. What really impressed me was how fast and efficient they were. Our drinks were already finished being made before we even completed payment. I didn't have to stand around waiting at all, which was a nice touch. Dear Yelp Community, I visited for the first time this week, and what a pleasant surprise...much more than a coffee shop! Upon entry, I was greeted by a professional and pleasant man who made me a good chai latte and explained about the venue, then another man gave me a personal tour of the shop because there is another section that is divided by a secret door into a cozy room with high ceilings, diverse furniture (with descriptions on the wall in the other area of the shop with the espresso machine), an area as a platform for performers, a wall area for projected films, as well as restroom with information on the walls that portray the history of the neighborhood (Leimert Park) and African-American history (cultural heritage). Also, I was informed that this venue is a dry space (no alcohol), open very late, has a kitchen with food, and offers community events. I highly recommend this venue. Enjoy, and well wishes. I moved to LA shortly before they closed so I was excited to see they were opening back up and an added bonus they would have a hidden speakeasy inside with live performances on certain days. My friend and I went opening weekend and it was a bust. We couldn't get in, Terrace Martin was performing so I wasn't surprised that it was super packed. No problem I knew I'd try them another day. Anyhoo a couple of weeks later I was in Lemiert Park for an art exhibit and decided to give Harun another shot. I don't drink coffee but when I looked at their menu online I saw they had smoothies so I walked over. Immediately when I walked in the vibe was off. There were 2 customers seated already. The woman at the register didn't acknowledge me at all. Shortly after a man came out with items for the 2 customers. He didn't say anything. I start reading the menu but didn't see anything about smoothies so I ask the lady at the front if they had them. She pretty much waved me off and said that's what we have or atleast that's what it sounded like she said. I look back at the menu and again didn't see smoothies so I asked her again. She does the same thing like she can't be bothered with my with questions. Atp it does look like she is making something or maybe handling another order but a simple "give me a sec and I'll be with you" would have sufficed. After that I just walked out. I love my people but black owned or not I don't spend my money where it's doesn't seem to be wanted or appreciated. Went across the street to ORA(which is my normal smoothie spot in Leimert Park). Greeted as soon as I walked in, they switched up their menu some but guy at the front explained it all to me with no problem. Completely different experience. There's a separate room for hosting meetings or events and they sell things there too. I wish they had more food variety and more comfortable seating.
