Paid $67 on Uber Eats for horrible food. The beignets were garbage, tasted like old oil, no sugar. The powdered sugar tasted like flour. Grits weird and salty and breakfast bowl over salted and low quality ingredients. I tried one of the seasonal lattes today, the sweet potato pie latte, and it was really good. It truly tasted like real sweet potatoes. It was $8+, but these are the typical prices nowadays at most coffee shops. I don't come here anymore to work because most of the seating is uncomfortable at this location. But it's still a good spot to stop by for a special latte to go. They play great music if you do stay around longer & there's still plenty of free parking in the lot. read more

This cafe was absolutely adorable, and I have heard so much about it from friends who frequent there. I came after a morning run to get a coffee with a friend, and was pleasantly surprised at their extensive menu! They have much more the just beverages and pastries like I assumed. They have hot food options, and I think I even saw shrimp and grits on the menu or something with shrimp! Nice! I got the sweet potato latte, hot. It was pretty delicious, but my only gripe is that I got the smallest possible size and it was over $8. Not going to lie, that felt a bit steep. Not sure if that's the norm with coffee spots now, as I usually make mine at home, but for the tiny size of my cup, over $8 felt excessive. Major kudos for good service because my friend didn't enjoy her latte cold, and they swapped it out for a hot one (even though she was ok paying for another item). This place is as great as Issa Rae's career. It's amazing that she's fused it into this spot amongst others. Had the grits and shrimp with collard greens and an egg over easy. This place is located in my old neighborhood in Los Angeles a block away from where I used to live. Been here a handful of times and every time I come it never disappoints. They have great coffee and great breakfast items along with side items to choose from. The ambience is great, all type of people frequent this spot. I had ran into two mothers with sons when I went with my son this time and we all sat together and chatted and let the boys play which was adorable. Food is always good and hearty portions. My son had that turkey sausages as a side, it comes with three sausage links and that was just enough for him for breakfast. I had the banging breakfast sandwich ($15), which was amazing and I couldn't even finish it all. Every time I come to LA I'll make sure to visit this spot!! read more

I loveeeeee going to local coffee shops. Hilltop coffee shops has several locations in LA. I had gone to one of their locations and I was not impressed with their coffee. I thought I should give their other location another chance. This time my experience was not any better than my first. My Pistachio chai hazelnut latte tasted watery and gross. I ordered half sweet and it was still way too sweet. So why the 4 star review?!! Well because of their reward app. When I downloaded it, as the new customer, you get $10 off your next purchase which basically paid for my watered down coffee! Went on a Saturday around noon. The people were pleasant and gave tips on what to order. I tried the breakfast burrito and had a sweet potato latte. The latte was soooo delicious. I stopped here for coffee and a quick breakfast today. It's in a super cute location on a quieter side of Slauson ave, and I was there around 9am when it was quiet. It's a nice open building and the natural lighting is gorgeous. Service was not super fast, but I'm patient so that wasn't an issue. My food came out before my latte, and both were pretty good. Super cute vibes and I have had their mini chocolate banana bread catered at the office which unfortunately isn't on their normal menu. Stopped in for brunch on Saturday and it was quite busy. Decided to try the strawberry matcha with almond milk, would have skipped the almond milk if the counter person had flagged it was an up charge to an already $8 drink that wound up being not quite what I expected (the foam was more like whipped cream). When I was visiting family in L.A from the city and found out they were right around the corner from Miss Isa Rae's coffee shop! This was the second best part of my trip! The coffee shop was executed beautifully in a prime location, enriched with class & culture. The mural of the black cowboys was my favorite. My experience at Hilltop was solid, but I kind of wish I opted for the Ethiopian slow drip as opposed to the Slauson slow drip. The Slauson, a dark blend, was rather too dark for me (and I drink dark coffee!!). It was a bit too much on the acidic side and while it was good, it just wasn't as good as I was hoping or expecting. My wife ordered the Pistachio Latte. For some reason, the flavors pop after you let the drink sit for a while. The flavor notes at the front is a little weird, it after you let the drink sit, the pistachio flavors pop at the end. The coffee store is nice. Free parking available right adjacent to the store. Restroom is shared (and often times locked and in use). The people are nice and very helpful in explaining what you're ordering. The vibes are nice. I would want to try other options here. read more

Not close to my first time getting coffee here, I've also come for various events, but its my first time leaving a review, because I couldn't not do so for this. Got their email with the new seasonal drinks including this Orange Blossom latte that I just have to try. Ordered it from home on their app as I head out for work yesterday, get there, head straight to the counter, it's not there. All good, I'm only 5 mins away, I see it's already packed in here this early in the AM, so it's just not ready yet. I sit to wait... tick, tick, tick, time goes past, commute out there's getting worse, time to clock in's getting closer, where's my coffee? One of the baristas calls me up to the counter and she's like: What'd you get? I tell her and she says I don't have a ticket for that. I tell her, No I ordered it on the app. I go to look, and Dang, still unpaid in my cart. Line at the counter's long so I reorder on the app right there on the spot, go sit back down. Tick, tick, tick... tick, tick, tick... Girl calls me back up to the counter: I still don't see your order... No, you saw me order it. Pull it up on my app and Fuuu, I ordered it for Hill St in DTLA, this is Slauson. I look up and she says: Don't worry about it, you don't have to drive all the way over there, I gotchu. I dropped $5 bucks in their glass tip jar on my way out. Ain't no way Starbux up the road would've done that. I was looking for great barista made coffee. (I want to give 3.7 stars) Hilltop Coffee's Slauson branch immediately caught my attention with its lively atmosphere. It's a fantastic space, with music at just the right level for conversation, making it a great place to work or read, despite being quite busy. The vibe is warm and inviting, and you can tell it's a local favorite. I tried the rib sandwich, which was excellent--hearty and filling. It would pair perfectly with a beer. Just note, all food and drinks are served to-go, even if you're seated inside. You'll need to listen closely for your name since there's no table service. Now, for the coffee--unfortunately, that was a letdown. I ordered a flat white, and it was far from what I expected. The espresso was over-extracted (so bitter and burned). Essentially, it was more like a cappuccino in a small cup as the milk had been frothed rather than stretched. Overall, this is a great spot to hang out and enjoy a sandwich, but I'd recommend skipping the classic coffee drinks. This was my second time here. The first time was about a week ago, the coffee was great then, the ambience is really amazing. . The service was not great. It was a little busy so I gave them some grace. Fast forward to today. I come in, busy once again. This time the service was horrific. I get to the counter, the young woman was taking the order. Rude, snappy, rushing me with hand gestures (Hurry up im busy). I pay and go sit down. 25 mins later, for 1 latte and 1 pastry, still not ready. I go up to ask when my order would be ready, the young woman snapped at me "it will be ready when its ready, go sit down" I challenged her, "excuse me" she stared at me, "I CAN GIVE YOU A REFUND". I immediately say "yes please." Horribly rude at the counter, just snappy, "Its on your card" I ask for a receipt. "Its on your card" Turns around and walks away. This woman working the front needs a serious training session, or removed from her position dealing with the public. If you feel like coming to a place and sitting and waiting for an hour for a latte, this is your place. If you value service, not waiting till the place closes for your items you purchase, and just generally treated like a human being AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. I will never return. Full disclosure, we've been going here for a minute but have never actually dined-in or hung out inside. We started with a Hilltop as a weekend morning breakfast pickup spot. A couple of times, we've eaten outside at the tables they have setup in the breezeway. Why a 5? Easy. This place is on point regarding what we want and get. First off, for drinks, the Purple Haze is the one. It's seasonal, so it isn't always available. Food: The Tots, Buenas Aires Bowl, and Açaí Bowl are excellent. Definitely, highly recommend trying these. Black owned and operated in the community -- with phenomenal products. My only ask would to be to add some gluten-free bakery items.
