Catfish nuggets. And one chicken nugget.
    Dayna C.

I finally tried this spot...on Easter. But still waited about twenty minutes. It's a no for me. There were several red flags for me. But the number one problem was spending 55 dollars( before tip) for breakfast for two and it being below average. My daughter got a waffle and bacon. I've never seen her leave bacon on the plate. She is a bacon fiend. She left bacon on the plate. They give you big vats of fake syrup warmed in a plastic bottle. I thought we had moved on from diabetes high fructose poison syrup. It's a disservice to the Black community to still offer this. Know better do better. They could save lives by using real maple syrup. I'd rather pay more for syrup with nutrients. Now the real kicker.... I ordered two sides, catfish nuggets and grits. The catfish nuggets were 15.95. I ate a few. Took most of them to go. On the way home, I snack on the catfish. I get to the last nugget..bite in....its chicken. Firstly...I do not eat chicken. Secondly....how the hell? The whole experience made me sad. My pockets and my belly.

My breakfast today was so good! I'm glad to give The Serving Spoon an updated review. There are so many people who love this place, I figured the first time, I must have gotten the wrong thing. Ordered takeout. I had the Little Spoon and opted for French toast (4 pieces), friend chicken (6 party wings), and eggs scrambled medium with cheddar cheese. I like how customizable their plates are. Eggs were cooked perfectly. French toast was fluffy, flavorful, and not dry. And that fried chicken was crispy, the batter on it had a nice crunch. I would have liked a bit more salt for my own liking, maybe hot sauce, but it's still good fried chicken.

What a gem. I came on a busy Saturday with a few yoga friends. I had the shrimp and grits for the first time, and it was delicious. The fried shrimp was full flavor. There was a gravy sauce that gave the grits amazing flavor. I was super happy. It's a small spot and the wait can be long, so get here early. Always excited to support black owned businesses.

    SHRIMP & GRITS (Fri-Sun)

Overall the food and place was amazing. The shrimp and grits really heals the soul, the first bite was packed with flavor. Went here on a Sunday so it was packed and had to wait one hour to get seated, but still worth it. Nice classic diner vibes as well.

Catfish filet, MAC & CHEESE (12 OZ) YAMS and COLLARD GREENS

Good afternoon hope all is well, came here on Saturday of last week with my best friend Omar, yes it was about an hour wait but it was worth it. The service was amazing server was nice and polite gave great recommendations. I had the catfish filet dinner special it was the truth cooked to perfection, wasn't hard, dry or over cooked. Them sides tho was the truth, collard greens was fire not dry at all. The yams was the truth mixed with that Mac cheese. Had the sunrise drink it was fire. Definitely will be coming back to try the breakfast. Other people say this place is trash but it's not. I enjoyed everything 10 out of 10.

I'm pretty confident I've reviewed this American gem before but I feel the need to run it back. Listen, these mofos don't miss. The wait may be long and the parking lot may be a zoo wafting of marijuana (isn't that decor) but the food will be soul on a damn plate. I swear they got like ten grannies from Mississippi back there cooking them grits because good God! We returned on a random Saturday to get my daughter a lil taste of good food after dance class at Debbie Allen. As usual I had the fish and grits. Just delightful. The food keeps tradition intact and everything is prepared perfectly. This is our go to when family goes to town. They always love it.

I have been dining here for years, but I haven't been here since the COVID-19 pandemic. Decided to take my uncle to lunch here and he enjoyed it. The food was still good as I remembered. I ordered the Polish sausage, eggs, grits, and toast. He had the turkey chops with red beans and rice and black eyed peas which were delicious. The food was made fresh to order and was full of flavor. The meat was tender and moist. Our waitress Ericka was outstanding. She was very professional, patient, and kind. The restaurant has a nice cool vibe with good music. Note: Parking is a little difficult when it's crowded. Great place to dine with family for breakfast or lunch.

Great food Eggs were cooked spot on The potato's were nice and hot and tasted really good The service was also amazing. She kept checking up on me and had a great attitude. Would definitely recommend stopping by

As a Inglewood/Los Angeles native, I've of course visited the Serving Spoon in the past but didn't have that good of an experience so I wasn't too amped to go back. But after hearing the changes made to the restaurant, I want to give it another try. After the back and forth with the menu, I chose the fried fish and waffle with the side of cornbread that I heard heavily bragged on and it was decent. Unfortunately the fried fish was overly salty so that was a disappointment as I was excited to try it but it was alright and glad I at least got to try it again recently.

The spot is super welcoming and all the staff is very friendly and attentive which i was very impressed with, the food definitely lacked flavor. I even had the pleasure of hearing the staff fight about cooking the eggs correctly which was funny bc my daughter did not like her eggs nor did I, the potato's and fried chicken which were both great. I would honestly still come back again and give them another shot just bc the staff was friendly the atmosphere was great just open and welcoming.

    Liquid eggs and not fresh
    Q J.

I was completely disappointed with them using LIQUID EGGS- the charge is way too much for liquid eggs- my eggs should have been fresh and cracked- I did not care for the almost of butter that was drenched on the toast as well I will not return - I am a Chef - I know FOOD QUALITY- this was NOT IT

A guy at a nearby table mentioned that the chicken was overcooked but we requested a light fry and really enjoyed the chicken. The green beans were seasoned perfectly with sliced carrots and onions. The only two issues were the cabbage wasn't seasoned well and needed to be cooked longer. Also the cornbread was not sweet and was reheated in a microwave. Overall all of us enjoyed our meal! But it wasn't over cooked so it could be saved. Glad I checked my order because it wasn't correct. I ordered the dinner plate with 3 sides. The rice and gravy(barely any gravy), greens were undercooked, cabbage (mistakenly placed in the container) under cooked & Mac n cheese no flavor and kinda of mushy. The peach cobbler is usually better tasting. But yesterday it was missing something. Maybe they changed the cook. I was highly disappointed after paying close to $40.

Salmon bites were NOT dry, just fried perfectly and seasoned well. The greens were so good, even the stems did not bother me because they were tender. Mac and cheese is really good in my opinion and the rice and cornbread just round it out well. Located in a ghost kitchen so very easy to miss if you drive by or do a pickup order, but trust it's worth it. Great food at a great price.

Each plate came w/2 sides and a "hot water" cornbread muffin. We went with mac n cheese, cooked cabbaged, sweet potato, collard greens, string beans and mashed potatoes as our sides. I hadn't mentioned any reviews to my friends because I wanted their unbiased opinions. Food arrived, they dug in and I started taking pics. IYKYK! lol! Before I could set my phone down the first remark was, 'Wow! That's salty!' Wellllll...Thats what Yelpers had mentioned, but I couldn't believe it was THAT salty. Then I took a bite. Yes, indeed, salty. Everything, except the sweet potatoes was salty. Even the corn muffin was topped with a salty butter "wash". I think we all decided the salmon was the best. The sweet potatoes tasted sugary, which I honestly didn't mind cuz I got a sweet tooth. But my friends passed after a taste. The mac n cheese was good, but I just took a taste from the side to see if I wanted to order an extra side for the table. I didn't. My friend wasn't wild about the texture of her meatloaf. It looked like a hunk of dense cake, it was so finely ground. Not hand formed ground meat like we grew up eating. We skipped dessert and left some things behind. I plan on checking the reviews again before the year ends and see if comments are still talking about the salt content. I'll be back if the salt is reduced because the staff was very nice and attentive and this is a lovely space I hope will be successful for years. Cheers! "CC"

I was only in Cali for a short while, and this spot happened to be about 15 min down the street from where I was staying. Perfect location, and I was curious to see how Cali does soul food. From the first bite, it hit me Emotionally triggered as I was transported straight back to my childhood. It felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table in New Orleans, eating my nanny's candied yams, greens, macaroni, and fried chicken. The flavors had that deep, home-cooked love, that is not taken for granted or lost on me, so hats off to the cook! That kind of food doesn't just fill you up; it connects you,and to top it off, the drinks? Man, they serve that real deal kol-aid. The kind I used to drink as a kid. As I was eating, I started thinking about how food ties us to previous & future generations. It's wild how dishes once considered scraps i.e: greens, yams, cornbread, oxtails, are now sought out in restaurants just like this one. These meals are more than just food; they're stories of survival, resilience, and community. But I digress, I know y'all didn't come here for a history lesson in Black culture, so I'll leave it at that. Now, onto the standouts. The mac and cheese and yams? Easily the stars of the plate. I like my yams runny and solid, because I love mixing it with the cornbread. Sweet, savory, soft--that combo hits every time. The macaroni? Seasoned perfectly. Creamy, rich, and not bland like you sometimes get at other spots . That's rare, and I don't take it for granted. Overall, Soul Food Shack gave me more than just a good meal, it gave me a taste of home, miles away from where I grew up.
