Good brunch spot with great service! We were meeting up with Kiddo for a quick brunch and decided to try Poppy + Rose because of the good reviews. Since we had quite a bit of stuff in the car, we didn't want to risk street parking. We found a $10 paid lot for 8 hours on the same block, with a security guard, so that worked out perfectly. Only a 2-minute walk to the restaurant. We went Friday around 11am. It was pretty busy, but we were seated right away. The servers were super nice. Hubby and Kiddo got the Forge coffee, which was fine but nothing special. I got the latte. It took a while to come out, but the latte art was TOP NOTCH and the cup was huge! It tasted really good, although I wish it had been hotter. Kiddo and I both got the chicken and waffles, which we really enjoyed. I'd give them about a 3.8/5. Good, but not the best we've had. We've had some amazing chicken and waffles in the Bay Area, so the competition is tough! Hubby got the Market Scramble and gave it about a 2/5. Overall, we enjoyed our visit. Service was meh. It wasn't really welcoming up front, but they were pretty busy, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. They do give you a pitcher of water when you sit down, but I prefer ice-cold water, so definitely ask for ice because the water was barely cold--almost room temperature. We got the mimosa kit, which was perfect to share between two people. Now onto the food! The steak BBQ breakfast burrito was AMAZING, especially with the BBQ sauce on the side. That is definitely not regular BBQ sauce, so I'm assuming it's made in-house because it was GOOD! We also ordered the wings, but they were pretty regular and honestly not my favorite. I've been interested in trying this place for quite some time and was finally able to get the chance. First off, my server was next to none, he was outstanding, great personality, very welcoming. They do get quite busy since the food is excellent plus that exact area does not have much in the way of actual sitdown restaurants with full table service. It's located in the heart of the flower District, which is extra nice. The service can be a bit slow, it did take a few minutes to get drinks; but I think it's due to the fact that they are pushed to max capacity, not only with people dining in, but also a lot of delivery orders. I had the shrimp and grits with the rose Mojito and a blackberry sparkling refresher, which are mocktail drinks. Everything was absolutely mind blowing! The cheesy grits, with that delicious sauce, with the fluffy eggs and the juicy perfectly cooked shrimp. We're out of this world. My only gripe is that I wish the portion was larger, maybe, Phil the bowl really up with the cheesy grits to make it really filling. I also had some Perrier to sip on, which came with some cucumber in the glass, which is always nice. It is so often the little things like that they can really be so touching. Given my visual impairment, the staff were very accommodating and helpful. They were happy to guide me to the restroom, which was clean and assist me with anything that I asked for. (I used a women's restroom that had stalls, but I am not entirely sure if there is a single/gender neutral option available.) I enjoyed my experience very much. This is a great casual brunch spot. It is especially good if you want to come down to shop for flowers or perfume or any of the many things that are available around. (The crab Benedict is no longer available.) I really wanted to love Poppy + Rose, but unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. We waited 30+ minutes to be seated, and the staff was not welcoming or friendly. We ordered the famous chicken and waffles, and they were some of the worst I've had. The waffles were dry and flavorless, while the chicken was a very small, extremely greasy piece that was mostly bone. It looked nothing like what is advertised online. When I politely mentioned my concerns to the waitress, she told me that if I didn't like it, I shouldn't eat it, and then rolled her eyes at me. Unfortunately, I always seem to have this experience with Instagram-famous and TikTok-viral locations. They focus way too much on what the food or reels look like and forget that they still need to serve the customer. The service was slow. Our server, Brea, treated us like a large group (which meant an automatic 20% gratuity), but she didn't take all of our orders at the same time. Instead, she made us wait as if we were separate tables. She took the orders from two sections of our group and then just left. We thought she was simply putting menus away and would come right back. Nope. She cleaned other tables, cashed out another table, and we eventually had to wave her down just to place the rest of our order. The food was good, but not good enough to overlook the service. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits. The first few bites were delicious, but after a while the grits became a little too salty for my liking. Overall, I'm glad I tried it at least once. My husband ordered the Waffle Chicken Sandwich, which was really good. The sauce tasted similar to buffalo sauce, and it paired well with the sweetness of the waffle. Unfortunately, the wait for our checks was just as bad. Our server would make eye contact with us and then continue doing other things. It was ridiculous how little she checked on us after taking our order. The tables and chairs were already uncomfortable, so having to sit there even longer waiting to pay was frustrating. The only reason this is a 3-star review and not lower is because the food was really good and well seasoned. I would not come back again. We found Poppy + Rose on Yelp, added ourselves to the waitlist, and were seated quickly when we arrived. If nothing else these pancakes are so far the best in downtown. The block of hash brown is interesting as it's crispy and crunchy on the outside soft like a hot potato in the inside. Good thing we had a reservation because the place was very busy. It was EXTREMELY hot inside the restaurant that day. We weren't sure if it's normally like that or if their air conditioning went out. They had a large fan inside but it wasn't really helping keep the restaurant cool...unless you were sitting in front of it. Service was VERY slow. We were seated about 10:35 (with a 10:30 am reservation) and we received our food about 11:15 am. We ordered the Biscuits & Gravy, the Crab Benedict, and the Waffle Sandwich. It seemed like they were short staffed. Our server brought us water, took our order, and brought out two of our three meals. The third meal came out a bit later by another server. We never saw him after that. We had to get our bill from another server. The food was delicious. Portions were just right. We came hungry and we inhaled it all. I first went to Poppy + Rose back in March 2018 and remember loving their chicken and waffles. Fast forward 8 years and I finally came back! One major improvement: reservations! It was super easy to make one through Yelp, and surprisingly there was no wait when we arrived. Very different from 8 years ago when you could easily be standing in line for an hour. We both ordered a breakfast plate that came with pancakes, bacon, potato hash, and eggs. The food was great! The pancakes especially were SO good, almost as good as Jack N Joe, which is a high bar for me. I ordered the limeade, but unfortunately it was extremely bitter and needed a lot of water to dilute it. He got the cold brew. Unfortunately, the service was the biggest disappointment. When our drinks came out, I asked for water. After about 10 minutes, I finally walked up to the counter to get it myself, but the server told me he would bring it to the table. Somehow, it still took about 20 minutes just to get water. Our food took around 30 minutes to come out as well. It also didn't seem like we were the only table having issues. The table next to us finished eating and waited around 15 minutes just to get their check, and you could tell they were getting frustrated. Overall, the food is still great 8 years later, but the service really needs some work. Visited on a Sunday from Chicago. We got in fairly quickly with our reservation. It was a buzzing place that resembled a cafeteria. The service was on the slower side but not bad. However our table near the door to the bathroom wobbled and the server was unable to fix it. My French vanilla latte was yummy, but a $2 add-on charge for oat milk is ridiculous. It became an $8 or $9 drink, which I really should have passed on in hindsight. The limeade is also overpriced at $7.50. As for the food, my chicken and waffle was quite good. Went to Poppy+Rose once, and it has been my desire breakfast spot everytime I'm in LA now, so fricken delicious! I've tried a couple different things on each visit from whoever I go withs plate, but I order the fried chicken waffle sandwich each time, cause it's just THAT good. Crispy, tender, tasty, small sweetness with a tiny punch of spice, just an amazing breakfast item that you can't help but just want more of. I got a lavender matcha with it as well which is one of the best matchas I've ever had. Servers are really nice, and each time I've went it's a bit on the busier side, so it's normal to have lots of convo and a bit of noise, but respectful and wonderful, not too much.
