I'm not sure if this is the usual modus operandi because I didn't know much about this place when my friends told me to meet them here, but basically I was told to tell one of the folks what I was looking for and they typically suggest something for you. So I told the very friendly and hospitable lady I was looking for something "full bodied and oaky". She brought back three different bottles and let me try a bit of each before I decided. A unique bar that does not offer a wine menu but rather a conversation with your bartender about what kind of wine you like. I said we like Pinot but we're interested in having natural wine tonight so they brought out 3 bottles. An orange and two chilled reds. All were very funky to be honest so I asked if they had any central coast wine since we like that region. He brought out another bottle and we loved it! So went with a wine called Scottie-Boy. They were busy so service was on the slower side but still a quality experience when we were face to face. It's dim and cozy in there. Lit by candlelight. A great environment for conversation. Since there is no menu, you have no idea what you are paying for and it would be a bit awkward to ask the price for each wine you taste. I would give Covell five stars if their kitchen was a little faster, or fast at all. I get that it's a small space (from what I can see from the bar as the kitchen is in plain sight), but at least give your guests an update on why their food order is taking over thirty minutes to prepare... Kitchen-speed aside, Covell is a quaint spot for a glass of wine with friends or dates. I'm impressed by the vast selection of white and red wines along with the occasional celebrity sighting as an added bonus; met Brett Dier aka Michael from Jane the Virgin, and that elevated my visit as he proved to be an absolute gentleman. The bartenders are nice, knowledgable on the wine list, and make small talk when time allows given that they are running the show most nights. We came here for Valentine's Day! While looking for something romantic but also laid-back, I came across Covell. They have an attached, intimate event space and were hosting a comedy night, as well as a live poet with a typewriter. We couldn't find a posted menu, but the way ordering works here is to describe what you're looking for to the very wine-knowledgeable bartenders, and they make recommendations for samples until you find your perfect glass. I described what I usually like and he nailed it on the first try. There is also draft beer if you aren't a wino. We were just feeling a lil peckish and ordered the Ricotta Toast and Chorizo and Dates and although they don't serve to the event space during a show, one of us saved a table while the other one went back for the food. When Covell employees deliberately choose to abuse their sidewalk seating privilege to block public access by positioning multiple heaters when the current outdoor temperature at noon is 76 Fahrenheit and the temperature at midnight, Covell's closing time, is projected to be 64 Fahrenheit specifically to block egress to my bicycle which was locked to a public guardrail adjacent to the public sidewalk is no less than the juvenile action of jerks. If you this attitude toward an anonymous member of the public excites you, then by all means be a guinea pig and find out for yourself if their service is better than the attitude they have demonstrated. Provided you look like you can afford a generous tip, I'm certain your experience will be different. As for their food: It's for the dogs! read more

If you are in a mood for wine, this is a great spot to go. They don't take reservations- it's first come, first serve. They don't have a wine menu so you basically tell your server what kind and style of wine you prefer, from there they let you sample 2-3 wines and you can pick the one you like. I like dry red wines so I got to try some from South of France, which were good. For food, they have cheese and charcuterie, tapas, sandwiches and desserts. We got the 3 Cheese and Charcuterie plate and got to pick our own cheese choice from the cheese list on the menu. The bread it came with was delicious! We also got the Country Pate as well, which comes with toast. I highly recommend getting it if you like pate. They do have some beer selections as well but no cocktails. Cute, Romantic, and 50's/60's music! Our few hours at Covell were nothing short of magical. So, I was stuck at home; staring at the ceiling all Sunday while my boyfriend had to work (so boring). So when 3pm rolled around and he got done, I quickly jumped to get ready, because he promised to take me out on one of our legendary dates. We had spent Saturday being "on" with friends so I wanted a more chill and intimate vibe where I could be completely selfish and have all of his undivided attention. I had never been to Covell, but he was telling me how much he'd think I'd enjoy. After a few pats of the makeup brush and a nice dress, we were ready for our adventure. We arrived around 6PM and stayed for quite a few hours (an obvious sign that we loved the place). Upon arrival, we sat at the bar and was greeted by the bartender. He was great! I wanted something light and red, so the bartender gave me a few options to try before deciding on a glass. It was exactly what I wanted! He gave my bf a few options too and he was happy with his choice. We started our night off with a cheese and charcuterie board. It was almost too beautiful to eat.....almost. It was super yummy with a few cheeses, pickles, and some other yummies on it. I'm a fan of truffle cheese, so I was a happy clam when a soft goat truffle cheese was featured. It was served with some yummy bread to accompany everything. I was in heaven. Next, we had the croque monsieur, which my bf was eyeing the entire afternoon, and the veggie flatbread. The wine selection was great, the vibe and aesthetic is very quaint and hip, the service was ok, however the food wasn't great at all. Met some girlfriends here last night for wine and ended up staying for dinner. The Chenin Blanc wine was delicious, however the food was forgettable with some items that just weren't good at all. Below is what we tried: Potato Wedges (Tater Tots) - 2 1/2 Stars. Not good at all. This wasn't cooked evenly, lacked flavor, and was very dry. Tasted like something that came out of a freezer after 10 years. 5 Cheese Plate - 3 stars. The best thing about this was the warm bread that's served with it, however the little piece was not big enough to support all the cheeses and we had to order more (Which I believe we were charged for) The presentation was on the basic side, and outside of the Gorgonzola the cheeses weren't memorable. I expected a more elevated experience for this item being that this is a wine bar. Ricotta Toast - 4 1/2 Stars. Favorite food item of the night! Delicious ricotta paired with honey and sea salt. Great flavor and worked well with the baguette (Which again was too small to support the cheese, ask for more when you order) Country Pate - 3 Stars. This was average. Veggie Flatbread - 2 1/2 Stars. Very small portion of a flatbread, and the crust was a little soggy. Again, this dish gave me recently thawed frozen dinner vibes. We sat at the bar and found the service to be consistent throughout. Not overly warm, but a very nice bartender. Attentiveness to refilling water glasses isn't a focus here, however the understanding of wine knowledge was. We went to an engagement party here! It's a cute speakeasy with a cool ambiance. We booked the back room on a Friday night (they require a food and drink minimum). It's a great size for a group of 15-20 standing might get tight if there were many more. It has its own bathroom and bar. Big enough for a long table our host had a large cake and had two large charcuterie platters. The food and drinks were good! Nothing specific stands out but I only stayed an hour.
