    Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang
    Oscar B.

This is an excellent spot for Malaysian cuisine, a cuisine that isn't the easiest to find in LA. However, this spot doesn't provide the best value as dishes are pretty expensive. -Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang: My favorite dish here. Sauce has excellent flavor and a pleasant sweetness, and paired well with the roti. Beef was very tender. This dish is expensive though. -Fried Hainan Chicken: Excellent. Chicken was very good and tender with perfect crispy exterior. Decent garlic scallion sauce. -Char Kway Teow: There's a slight spicy kick to the noodles otherwise the flavor of this was okay. Portions are small and can honestly be finished in a few bites. -Pork Jowl Skewer: Decent smoky flavor. -Chicken Meatball Skewer: I liked the pineapple peanut sauce that came with it.

Rasarumah is one of my most frequented restaurants in LA even though that means driving 40 min one way, because it's 100% worth it. Wagyu beef curry is a must-order. It's slow cooked for hours in sweet creamy coconut yellow curry. The soft, succulent Wagyu meets the sweet, aromatic curry in a beautifully balanced harmony. Roti bread takes things to the next level. Wrap the curry wagyu in the roti, and add in the herbs and pickles, and then the food bites became increasingly sophisticated. The rich curry is balanced by fresh herbs, while the creamy coconut base is perfectly offset by the sharp, tangy pickles. Pork jowl skewer is my second favorite. Intensely rich and satisfying. The chewy texture makes me feel like I'm eating a savory jello. Try to come during their happy hours, so you get the Wagyu beef roll which is just the Wagyu beef curry but the kitchen wrap everything up for you. The portion is smaller but this allows for more variety. Also when the afternoon light softly lights up the interior, the plants really start to come to life, making the life full of tropical exotica but still homey and inviting.

I went for a birthday meal and from the moment we walked in ( we were the very first people there at 5pm lol) we felt like family. Kind, welcoming, knowledgeable, and full of personality. Absolutely every single person here made my night so so special. Each bite of every dish felt like I was being transported outside of this tiny Westlake restaurant and into someplace exciting. The skewers were my favorite (not pictured) and I can see myself going back for a skewer and pie- a girl dinner :)

Overall: 4 stars Authentic Southeast Asian restaurant with unapologetic flavors and traditional ingredients. I appreciated the proactive service and how the birthday celebration was on a grand billboard for an exciting night. I thought the pricing was similar to tapas style, so I think the presentation could be improved to match that standard as well. (Sambal Trio: C) - The featured three include a shrimp paste, bell pepper tamarind, and jalapeno-forward. I like the authenticity of the flavors, particular since the umami shrimp paste is such an acquired taste. I think it would be preferable if one of the sambal was sugar-forward since all of them have unapologetic spice. (Chicken Satay: A) - The meatball is tender and well binded, pairing well with the fruity pineapple salsa, as well as the nutty peanut sauce. (Pork Jowl: A+) - The pork is tender and the richness is well contrasted by the sharp dijon. (Mushroom Skewer: C) - King oysters are cleanly trimmed and nicely roasted. However, the price is premium compared to the protein options. (Rojak Salad: B) - Herbaceous and fruity salad that provides a refreshing palette to contrast the authenticity of the reset of the comfort menu. (Char Kway Teow: B) - Comforting and tasteful noodles powered by that wok hay. Both the fish cake and chinese sausage add heartiness while the cilantro adds a mild balance. (Pandan Sundae: A) - Eventful sundae with lots going on from the red bean to the pandan jelly to the vegan coconut ice cream that is impressively creamy. The puffed rice and caramel add even more textural and flavoral variety. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: E Atmosphere: E Service: +1 Menu: +1 Insta/Yelp/Beli/TikTok: @amei_eats

    Perfect dirty martini

Situated on a quiet part of east Beverly Blvd, this sparkly, quaint little joint provided me 2 dirty martinis with 6 perfectly frozen olives followed by truly some of of the lightest, loveliest Malaysian fare possible. The salads were epic. The sprouted cauliflower was unexpected, healthy tasting and also super delish. The wagyu curry plate with rice stole the show, though. Do get the sambal as well because the sauces were an unexpected joy alongside all the dishes. Wonderful + fast service and a table for 4 on a last minute reservation? Yes please!

Every dish we ordered was delicious. The food we ordered were the Pupu Platter, Crab Rangoon, Fried Hainan Chicken, Char Kway Teow, Wagyu Beef Rendang, and the Mushroom Clay Pot Rice each dish was flavorful and satisfying. The restaurant has a warm and cozy atmosphere, and I loved the thoughtful touch of putting birthday guests' names on the board to celebrate them. The staff were friendly, attentive, and professional throughout the meal. Every dish exceeded my expectations and left me very satisfied. The restaurant itself isn't very big, but it's clearly popular and busy. Parking can be a bit challenging, so you may need to look for street parking. Overall, a lovely dining experience definitely recommend.

Really yummy! Inside is very cute, would be a nice date night spot. We had the: - Pu Pu Platter - Gado Gado - Pork Jowl Skewer - Char Koay Kak - Passionfruit Cream Pie This was a nice assortment to share with 3 people. My favorite bites were the Pork Jowl Skewer, Gado Gado, the mushroom skewer from the Pu Pu Platter, and the Passionfruit Cream Pie. Love whenever I got a bite of Shrimp Chips. I want to try the Cendol Sundae next time!

Surprised that this Rojak salad had so much flavor profile. Must order

5th stop of the day and our 3rd food option on our double date extravaganza was another Michelin star restaurant. The area we were in did not feel like a cozy little spot dishing out award winning food would be here, but this hidden gem was outstanding. Service from Sam was great because he ensured we got a variety of the whole menu to ensure we all enjoyed ourselves. From drinks to food, everything was amazing. My only complaint was I wish the portions were a little bigger. The samosas, the quality of the ceviche, the tenderness of the pork belly, the very well balanced flavors of the fruit & veggie salad, and the stir fry noodles which were cooked to perfection all blended well together. Not to mention they paired well with the cocktails we ordered. Another must visit place if you want to try some Malaysian food.

Came here to celebrate my birthday and I loved every minute here! Staff was attentive and so friendly. Loved their little ".. and happy birthday! :)" they'd sneak in while talking to me. We ate family style and ordered sambal trio, pupu platter, gado gado salad, char kway teo, and the cendol sundae. Honestly, everything slapped but if I had to choose my favorites and what I would easily reorder: pupu platter, char kway teo, and cendol sundae. The char kway teo was delicious, so flavorful and I was slurping this down! So good! The sundae was the perfect way to end the night. I love pandan and loved all the pieces of this. I was so close to ordering one to-go so I could enjoy it at home! Cocktails: Loved loved the pandan colada and the calamansi crusher. (as you may have guessed, big fan of pandan.) I will ABSOLUTELY be coming back. Reservations were so easy online and I found street parking in the neighborhood easily on a Friday night (might've been luck?). This is such a fun vibe and so lively. Whether it's one other person or a group, I think all would appreciate this fun restaurant! Loved the billboard too ;)

Chef Johnny Lee and his team are one of the most welcoming in LA. Rasarumah is cozy and warm and fun. They are inspired by Malaysian street stalls. The vegetable work here is great. I love it when produce is treated with the same care as proteins. The gado gado is my favorite salad on the menu. Other highlights are the char kway teo, beef check rendang, and the chicken and pork skewers. If you come on Wednesdays, you'll be treated to Pearl River Deli delights like Hainan or soy sauce chicken and their accouterments. Chef received a lot of notoriety from his last restaurant. Come for a good time.

Rusa Rumah is a cute Malaysian restaurant. The area is a bit sketchy but it was not scary or anything. Anyways, street parking was easy. I had an early reservation on Sunday but it wasn't crowded at all. You know Resy's reservation sometimes makes the dining experience scarier than what it is. It gave me all the rules but the restaurant was still half empty at 7. We ordered drinks and a few things on the menu. Everything was good. I wish they had more Singaporean dishes also. I will add some photos so you can see what the dishes look like here :-)

This is a fun spot to enjoy with friends or a date night! The interior was so much cuter than I was expecting and our waitress was absolutely delightful! We found street parking easily, which was great. The seating was fun, we sat in the corner on a surprisingly comfortable bench. The food was a ton of great flavors. -Shrimp chips and sambal trio: 8/10. The shrimp paste sambal was easily the best, that was like a 9/10. I felt the shrimp chips could be shrimpier (but I just love shrimp chips in general). I usually love a tomatillo, but this tomatillo sambal was probably my least favorite of the 3, probably a 7/10, but still fun to try! -pork jowl skewers: soooooo good. It was perfect with the mustard dipping sauce. 9/10 -char kway teow: this was hands down my favorite dish!!! Great depth of flavor. Perfect stir fry taste. 9.5/10 -wagyu beef cheek rendang: this was super comforting. The roti was a little greasy but it was worth it, I wish we had another serving of it! This is great when you combine the roti, lime sauce, beef cheek, a touch of herb and the lime. You really need it all to get the perfect balance. 8/10 Their alcoholic drinks looked great, but my friend and I tried a tea that said "mango lassi and apricot" instead because we both love mango lassis.... This tea had nothing to do with a mango lassi - it honestly was not good. Neither of us liked it. And it had the most unappetizing smell. This was probably a case that we just ordered the wrong thing, if we had ordered their crusher, I'm sure it would be a different review. But that tea was not good, specifically the smell.

Desserts - Cendol Sundae and Passionfruit Cream Pie

We had early reservations at the Los Angeles location and since it was during Happy Hour so we were able to get the cocktails for $10 each. We had a party of six plus a baby and were seated in a table away from the crowd. The ambiance and vibe was nice, but the lighting was a bit too dark for my liking. We ordered a variety of items which were all very good. Our server was attentive and the dishes arrived quite quickly. We ordered a variety of dishes - the Shrimp Chips, Cod Collar Deep Fried, the skewer sampler which consisted of the pork jowl, mushroom, and chicken skewers, the Sambal Trio, Crudo, and for dessert, we had the Cendol Sundae and the Passion fruit cream pie. Out of the skewer trio, I particularly liked the pork jowl and chicken skewers . Everything was delicious and not too spicy which I am sensitive to. There is only street parking and the restaurant was a bit difficult to see at first from the street.

To end the night before we headed off to dinner, we stopped by The Semi- Tropic bar for drinks. The parking situation was difficult to say the least-- there is no street parking or parking lot. And the neighborhood behind the bar is filled with park cars. We were lucky and parked at a parking lot that was for the surrounding business (so sorry to the pizza/ weed shop!). We arrived at around 6:30 PM so it wasn't too busy. We were greeted by one of the servers and she gave us options to either sit at a lounge table area or hightop tables. We opted for the hightop tables because we knew we weren't staying there for long. The server was friendly and patient as we looked over the menu for drinks. I've been sober for about a year so I only had water, my boyfriend ordered a Naoshima Dream, his cousin ordered a Mango Cart, and his cousin's girlfriend ordered a Lemon Drop Martini. The bar was super cute and hipster! I honestly would have loved going to this bar back when I used to drink. It's dimly lit, had a vintage 20's speakeasy feel to it and the music was a vibe. I'd recommend coming here for a little date with your partner or even coming with a group of friends. My boyfriend had been here once before and he said the food was really good and affordable. He had a panini and said for bar food it was a 10/10. We waited maybe like 10 minutes for our drinks to come, we were having such a fun time chatting and enjoying the environment that it didn't feel long at all. My boyfriend, his cousin, and his cousin's girlfriend really enjoyed their drinks. They said the drinks tasted "light" insinuating that there was barely any alcohol in it. Don't let the taste fool you, after finishing half of their drink there were full of smiles, giggles, and had a great buzz going. The prices here were all pretty fair for the cost and quality of the drinks. Would defintely recommend coming here for drinks and dinner for a date night or a night out with friends!

The Butthole Surfer is their version of a pina colada which, while decent, could have been a little more flavor forward. Feel it is premade in batches as I didn't see it made fresh but was brought getting the back, but still decent. The Lucid Dream had the smokiness from the mezcal posted with the mandarin, but then the rosemary comes in and helps add a little balance to the drink. The Swimsuit Edition was more flavor forward, but the passion fruit didn't necessarily pop in the drink for us. And finally was the Snitches Get Stitches, another mezcal drink with mango and horchats.
